Dana and Tom with returning guests, Jesse Sertle (fellow group member of CineMadison; previously on Rounders and Easy Rider; @jsertle on IG) and Keith Techmeier (brother-in-law of Tom, previously on Ghostbusters, Red River, and Saving Private Ryan), discuss the cosmic justice film, Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood (2019): written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie.Plot Summary: Welcome to 1969 Los Angeles, where everything is changing, and the golden age of Hollywood is giving way to something darker. Enter Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), a former TV Western star struggling to find his place in a rapidly evolving industry. Alongside him is Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), Rick's laid-back, enigmatic stunt double and best friend, who's equally adrift but with a mysterious past that suggests he can handle anything thrown his way.As Rick navigates a career in freefall, he's desperate to reclaim the limelight, landing guest roles in TV series and contemplating a move to Italy to star in spaghetti westerns. Cliff, meanwhile, spends his days driving around the sun-drenched city, running errands for Rick and crossing paths with an eclectic mix of Hollywood's fringe characters.Just next door to Rick lives Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), the radiant rising star whose life is brimming with promise and possibility. Unbeknownst to Rick and Cliff, Sharon's fate is on a collision course with the notorious Manson Family, a group of twisted outcasts led by the sinister Charles Manson (Damon Herriman). As the lives of Rick, Cliff, and Sharon intertwine in unexpected ways, they each face their own reckonings with the harsh realities of a changing world. Set against a meticulously crafted backdrop of a bygone era, Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood is a love letter to the city of angels, an exploration of fame, friendship, and the insidious shadows lurking just beneath the glittering surface.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome02:27 Cast and Recognition for Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood05:09 Relationship(s) to the Film09:09 What is Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood About?13:23 Controversy and Wish Fulfillment: Quentin Tarantino's Historical Re-tellings20:39 Plot Summary for Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood22:42 Did You Know?25:07 First Break25:56 Ask Dana Anything29:40 Best Performance(s)46:50 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)55:51 Second Break56:53 In Memoriam58:20 Best/Funniest Lines01:02:40 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:10:13 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:14:59 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:19:44 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:23:14 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:26:57 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:28:21 Remaining Question(s)01:37:48 Thank You to Our Guests01:41:12 CreditsYou can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at
Tinseltown beckons as we delight in two modern classics poised to define for audiences the breadth of America's cinematic history: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Babylon. But before we pontificate on these recent epics, we enjoy a light Blue Plate Special sampling discussing new releases Kinds of Kindness, Horizon: An American Saga- Chapter 1, and MaXXXine, as well as paying tribute to the late screen legend Shelley Duvall. We eventually shuffle in to see the two splashy films located atop our glittering marquee: listen as we situate Quentin Tarantino's look at TV cowboys squaring off against hippies in 1969 Hollywood towards the top of his filmography, puzzle over where Damien Chazelle's boozy Jazz Age saga leaves him at this stage of his still young career, and generally revel in both films' literal and figurative rages against the dying of the light. For episode #600 of Have You Ever Seen, we're completing the Quentin Quest. With this, we have reviewed everything Tarantino has directed (well, discounting Four Rooms). Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is the man's most-emotional film and it's his most-personal too. The outstanding cast is headlined by the hilarious Leonardo Di Caprio, the gruff (and Oscar-winning) Brad Pitt and the sweet-as-honey Margot Robbie. She doesn't get as much to do as the guys do, but her lovely performance always brings one of us to tears. This film is funny, it's heartfelt, it's tense and QT gets back into "revisionist history" territory when Leo & Pitt's fictional characters cross paths with the very-real Manson maniacs. Bring on the ultra-violence...and bring on the laughs! This movie about movie-making (and television-making) isn't Tarantino's #1 film, but it deepens with meaning every time we see it. So enjoy this fairy tale that often feels as real as a donut because we're talking about Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Well, Actually: Jodie Foster appeared in a few TV shows in 1969, so the young actress WAS acting right around the time this movie is set. Also, Bruce Dern worked with QT on The Hateful Eight, of course, but he's also in Django Unchained. Also also, they were shooting the Lancer pilot in February, so Rick not talking about working on that show is probably because a proper season would only start airing after the events of this movie. And Bibi from Kill Bill is played by Perla Haney-Jardine. Check out the goods that Sparkplug Coffee offers. They give our listeners a onetime 20% discount if they use our "HYES" promo code. Well, now, this is an end of an era. The last Tarantino movie to review: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Listen in as Mike, Shaun and I give the director one last send off, and add a bit of a retrospective as well. Then, get ready to return to form: we're heading back to books! First, we're going to read Jordan Peele's collection of new black horror in Out There Screaming, then have a little fun with AI in what I'm calling, ChatGPT Story Hour. Welcome to your monthly worship service, where each month of this season we've been taking a look at 2 movies that influenced one of Tarantino's films. Under the microscope this month is Tarantino's self proclaimed magnum opus, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The movies we will be investigating to see if he simply referenced them in this film or blatantly ripped them off are, Jesse Moss', "The Bandit" (2016) & Phil Karlson's "The Wrecking Crew" (1968). Sitting down with me this month to assist with my final investigation of Season 2 is Thomas Hippler (The Fanacek Podcast). So join us as we get to the bottom of wether or not Quentin Tarantino is in fact a master filmmaker or just a scene stealing, glorified hack. On this special episode of Time on Screen, we're coming to you live from the Editorial Lounge at the Chicago Windup Watch Fair, where Zach Kazan was joined by Worn & Wound's Head of Partnerships, Kyle Snarr, and Neall Brick from Citizen. They're there to discuss Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino's ninth feature film. This is one of the best watch spotting in recent years, primarily for a well documented mistake that has a Citizen chronograph on Brad Pitt's wrist that definitely didn't exist in 1969, when the film takes place. That's the jumping off point for a spirited discussion about the film, the complicated reaction to it, and Tarantino's career. There's also plenty of talk about the watch featured in the film, which was the inspiration for the recently released Citizen 50th Anniversary Tsuno Chronograph, a 1970s inspired gold tone chronograph that looks particularly at home on a bund strap. We're grateful to our friends at Citizen for making this episode possible. Their Promaster collection is built on a century worth of technological research and innovation. The collection represents professional-grade sports watches built for sea, land, and air. Each watch is designed to overcome the elements and empower the wearer to “Go Deeper, Go Further and Go Higher” and the watch casting in Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood is a solid representation of that ethos. To learn more about the Citizen Tsuno Chronograph 50th Anniversary Limited Edition and explore the collection, head to citizenwatch.com.

This week, we are thrilled to talk to an exceptional actor, and true Tinseltown original, Spencer Garrett. As we prepared to speak with Spencer, I found myself inexplicably captivated by his presence. It dawned on me that he evokes a long-forgotten romantic vision of Hollywood that I was searching for 24 years ago. It's akin to the ambiance of Jack Nicholson at Dantanas or Bukowski at the drawing room. During our conversation, we delve into the contrast between this romanticized concept of Hollywood and the realities of our own experiences. Born into Hollywood, in a way, Spencer's mother was none other than Kathleen Nolan, a prominent actress and the first female president of the Screen Actors Guild. His father, Richard Heckencamp, was an esteemed talent agent. Though his upbringing allowed him unique insight into the enchantment of our industry, Spencer still had to prove himself like anyone else. What stands out to me about him is his undeniable passion for the work. It is a special kind of joy that has sustained him for nearly four decades in the business. The list of his credits is far too extensive to cover in its entirety, but he is particularly recognized for his roles in notable films such as Air Force One (1997), 21 (2008), Public Enemies (2009), All the Way (2016), and The Front Runner (2018), among many other remarkable projects. If one were to consider a career in chapters, I would confidently assert that this latest chapter has been one of his most captivating. He stole the spotlight from the likes of DiCaprio and Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and he is now reprising his role as the legendary Chick Hearn in the upcoming second season of HBO's Winning Time. We sincerely hope that you all thoroughly enjoy this episode. In many ways, I believe that this is the episode where we truly grasp the genuine ethos of our show. #spencergarrett #onceuponatimeinhollywood #winningtimehbo #winningtime #hbo #meisner #leonardodicaprio #bradpitt #quentintarantino #oldhollywood #actor #characteractor #chickhearn #lovethatguypodcast #brendanreynolds #ronniegeneblevins #actor #actorinterview #interview #film #filmmaking
Taylor and Brett dive into Quentin Tarantino's ninth film, and label it one of the best hangout movies of all time!
In this bonus episode (which is really an addendum to Season 1 Episode 6, featuring Zachary Lazar's rock novel ‘Sway', a story that brings together the early Rolling Stones, the films of avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger, and members of the Manson Family in a fictional setting) Scott Michaels joins me to talk about Sharon Tate and the Manson Murders and what it was like working with Quentin Tarantino on his film ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'. Scott Michaels is Hollywood's original authority on celebrity deaths, including the Manson Murders, and a former tour guide for LA's now-defunct Dearly Departed Tours. Quentin Tarantino hired Scott to be a consultant on ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood', which reimagines the murders of Sharon Tate, Voytek Frykowski, Jay Sebring, and Abigail Folger at the hands of the Manson Family in early August 1969. This past April, Scott gave me a once-in-a-lifetime, one-on-one, all-day tour of major Manson Family points of interest in Los Angeles and the surrounding area, which we talk about in this bonus episode. We also talk about common misconceptions about the murders, Scott's experience working with Quentin Tarantino on ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood', Scott's favorite nonfiction books about the murders, people related to the case he's known, and little-known tidbits about the murders, like what book Abigail Folger was reading when she was killed. So, cue up The Beatles' ‘White Album', slip into your favorite retro threads, kick back and join Scott Michaels and me as we time travel back to 1969 Southern California to revisit the true crime that brought an end to the free lovin' groovy ‘60s. Afterward, I invite you to check out Season 1 Episode 6 to hear my conversation with Zachary Lazar about his novel ‘Sway' and Tony Sokol's thoughts on the Stones and the occult and Zeena Schreck's memories of her godfather Kenneth Anger. *Listen to the episode, then watch the condensed video version of my interview with Scott Michaels. This version includes photos and videos I shot during my Manson Murders tour with Scott in April 2023. This episode may be the very epitome of why I started this podcast. This week I'm joined by my friend Jeff Melnick to talk about an absolutely batshit film called Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Jeff is the perfect guy to talk about this movie; he wrote a terrific book about the Manson murders called Charles Manson's Creepy Crawl: Inside the Lives of America's Most Infamous Family. But that only hints at what's inside this episode. Using this movie, Jeff and I get into all sorts of dialogue about pop culture, the conflicts in Florida, hip hop, course design, anti-fandom, and yes, Hootie and the Blowfish. I think you're gonna love this episode. About our guest:Jeffrey Melnick has been thinking about the Manson Family since first encountering the book and miniseries Helter Skelter in the 1970s. Melnick is a professor at University of Massachusetts Boston and the author of 9/11 Culture: America Under Construction (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009), Black-Jewish Relations on Trial (University Press of Mississippi, 2000), and A Right to Sing the Blues (Harvard University Press, 1999).
