A nudisco celebration of the music of Philadelphia International Records and the role it played in the development of disco. Founded in 1971 by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, the label's original vision was to rival Berry Gordy's Motown organisation. Gamble and Huff were also responsible for writing many of the label's greatest hits, which often featured their own in-house orchestra MFSB (or Mother Father Sister Brother). Gamble and Huff have also been activists supporting the black community and improving south Philadelphia. They created Universal Companies which in 2003 partnered with others in a $100 million plan to construct and renovate 400 homes. Together they have written over 3,000 songs producing 175 gold and platinum records, making them some of the most prolific songwriters of all time. Radio Funk | Le Podcast de Funky Pearls Radio

Welcome to another episode of Funky Pearls Radio podcast, where we celebrate the musical legends who've shaped our world. Today, we're spotlighting the illustrious journey of Jean Carn, a name  that resonates with soulful melodies and timeless artistry.  Born Sarah Jean Perkins on March 15, 1947, in Columbus, Georgia, Jean Carne was destined for a life steeped in music. Raised in Atlanta, her parents recognized her talent early, encouraging her to sing in the church choir at just four years old.  But Jean's musical prowess didn't stop at vocals; she also mastered piano, clarinet, and bassoon. Her academic journey was as impressive as her musical one. At Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta, Jean not only honed her musical skills but also became fluent in Russian.  Her dedication to music earned her a scholarship to Morris Brown College in 1965, where she expanded her repertoire to include various orchestral instruments. Jean's recording career blossomed in 1969 alongside her husband, Doug Carn. Their musical collaboration bore fruit in the form of three albums for Ovation Records.  Jean's unique voice, first heard on the radio show 'Today In Georgia', captivated listeners, and her rendition of 'Misty' left an indelible mark. A trailblazer in her own right, Jean Carne was praised for being one of the first Afro-American women to take charge of her musical direction, resisting industry pressures.  Her collaborations with legends like Duke Ellington, Norman Connors, George Duke, and Earth, Wind And Fire further solidified her status in the music world. Jean's time with Philadelphia International Records marked a pinnacle in her career, introducing her to R&B and pop audiences.  Her move to Motown Records brought the hit 'If You Don't Know Me By Now', a duet with The Temptations, showcasing her versatility and reach. Beyond her own albums, Jean contributed to various projects, working with artists like Dexter Wansel, Kenny Gamble, and Stanley Turrentine.  Her dedication to her craft never waned, as evidenced by her continuous touring, balancing her professional life with her personal life as a mother of three in Atlanta. In 2002, Jean toured the U.K., a testament to her enduring appeal and global reach.  Her album 'Collaborations', released in 2003, was a celebration of her musical partnerships over the years, a fitting tribute to a career marked by diverse and enriching musical alliances.  Jean Carne's discography, from her early collaborations with Doug Carn to her solo works and later albums, paints a portrait of an artist who not only embraced her musical roots but also evolved with the times.  Albums like 'Jean Carne' (1977), 'Happy To Be With You' (1979), and 'Closer Than Close' (1986) are landmarks in a journey defined by passion, skill, and an undying love for music.  As we celebrate Jean Carne on Funky Pearls Radio, we honor not just her music but her spirit - a spirit that has inspired and will continue to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers alike.  Her story is a melody that speaks of perseverance, talent, and the transformative power of music. Jean Carne, a true musical virtuoso, remains an enduring symbol of soul, jazz, and R&B excellence.Hébergé par Ausha. Visitez ausha.co/politique-de-confidentialite pour plus d'informations.

Today on Funky Pearls Radio, we're exploring the remarkable story of The O'Jays , a group that has left an indelible mark on R and B and soul music with their harmonious sounds and timeless hits.  Originating from Canton, Ohio, The O'Jays were initially formed as a quintet, later evolving into a trio during their most prominent recording years in the mid-1970s at Philadelphia International Records.  The original lineup included Walter Williams, Bill Isles, Bobby Massey, William Powell, and Eddie Levert. The group, initially known as The Triumphs and later The Mascots, changed their name to The O'Jays in 1963 as a tribute to the local Cleveland radio DJ, Eddie O'Jay.  Their early singles as The Mascots, including 'Story Of My Heart' and 'Lonely Rain', gained local traction and set the stage for their future success. The O'Jays' journey took a significant turn when they met producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. This collaboration led to the release of the album 'The O'Jays In Philadelphia' in 1969, showcasing their early work under Gamble and Huff's guidance. Their big break came in 1972 with the single 'Back Stabbers' from the album of the same name, which became a massive hit.  The group's success continued with the release of 'Ship Ahoy' in 1973, featuring the iconic 'For the Love of Money', and their live album 'The O'Jays Live In London' in 1974. Albums like 'Survival' and 'Family Reunion' in 1975 further solidified their status in the R and B world, with hits like 'I Love Music' and 'Living For The Weekend'. Tragedy struck with the passing of William Powell in 1977, but the group continued, with Sammy Strain joining the lineup. Their subsequent albums, including 'Travelin' at the Speed of Thought' (1977) and 'So Full of Love' (1978), which featured 'Use Ta Be My Girl', continued to chart successfully. Throughout the late '70s and '80s, The O'Jays released several albums, including 'Identify Yourself' (1979) and 'My Favorite Person' (1982), showcasing their ability to evolve with the times. Their album 'When Will I See You Again' in 1983 was notable for its modern sound, further demonstrating their versatility. The O'Jays continued to release music into the new millennium, with albums like 'For The Love' (2001) and 'Imagination' (2004).  Their contributions to music were recognized with inductions into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004 and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2003, The O'Jays co-starred in the movie 'The Fighting Temptations', showcasing their talent beyond music.  The group's ongoing influence and popularity were celebrated at the 2009 BET Award Show, where they were honored with the Life Time Achievement Award.  Despite challenges, including Walter Williams' battle with multiple sclerosis, The O'Jays have continued to inspire with their music and performances. Their latest albums, including 'Christmas With The O'Jays' (2010) and 'The Last Word' (2019), reflect their enduring appeal and legacy.  As we honor The O'Jays on Funky Pearls Radio, we celebrate a group that has been the soundtrack to many lives, with songs that speak to love, struggle, and triumph. From their humble beginnings in Canton to the pinnacle of soul and R and B music, The O'Jays' journey is a testament to the enduring power of music to connect, uplift, and endure.Hébergé par Ausha. Welcome to Funky Pearls Radio, where today we're celebrating the musical journey of The Jones Girls, an iconic trio whose soulful harmonies and distinct sound left an indelible mark on the R and B scene. The Jones Girls – Brenda, Shirley, and Valorie – were born into a musical family in Detroit, Michigan.  Their mother, Mary Frazier Jones, was a singer, nurturing their talents from a young age. By the 1960s, the sisters were already making waves in the music industry, performing alongside legends like the Four Tops, Little Richard, The Impressions, and B.B. King. Their first recordings, including 'Learn How To Love' and 'Come Back', showcased their vocal prowess, earning them recognition in the R and B world. By the mid-1970s, they had become sought-after background vocalists, working with artists like Aretha Franklin on 'Almighty Fire' and Linda Clifford on 'Runaway Love'.  The turning point for The Jones Girls came when they joined Diana Ross on a major tour. This exposure led them to Philadelphia and the attention of Kenny Gamble, who signed them to Philadelphia International Records in 1979. This move marked the beginning of a golden era for the sisters.  At Philadelphia International, The Jones Girls released four phenomenal albums: 'The Jones Girls' (1979), 'At Peace With Woman' (1980), 'Get As Much Love As You Can' (1981), and 'Keep It Comin' (1984). These albums included hits like 'Nights Over Egypt', 'You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else', and 'Dance Turned Into A Romance', cementing their place in R and B history.  In addition to their own albums, The Jones Girls provided background vocals for numerous artists, enhancing tracks by Freda Payne, Lamont Dozier, Thelma Houston, and others. Their versatility and harmonies added a unique depth to every song they touched.  The trio's journey took a new turn in 1983 when they moved to RCA Records for the album 'On Target', and then returned to Philadelphia International for 'Keep It Comin'' in 1984. During this period, Shirley Jones embarked on a successful solo career, highlighted by her 1986 album 'Always In The Mood' and the hit single 'Do You Get Enough Love?'.  Tragedy struck the group in the early 2000s with the loss of Valorie in 2001 and Brenda in 2017. These losses were profound, not only to the remaining sister Shirley but also to the countless fans who adored The Jones Girls.  As we remember The Jones Girls on Funky Pearls Radio, we honor a group that brought elegance, soul, and heartfelt emotion to the music world. From their early days in Detroit to their success at Philadelphia International,  The Jones Girls' legacy is one of musical excellence, sisterly love, and enduring influence in the world of R and B. Their music continues to inspire and resonate, reminding us of the power of harmony, passion, and the enduring bond of family.Hébergé par Ausha. These albums, featuring tracks like 'The Sweetest Pain' and 'Solutions', are celebrated for their innovative fusion of R and B with space-age and funk elements. Dexter Wansel's contributions extend beyond the United States. He worked with U.K. soul artists like Junior and Loose Ends, further establishing his international appeal.  His later albums, such as 'Captured' (1986) and 'Universe' (1991), continued to showcase his evolution as an artist, exploring new sounds and themes. Episode 80. Host Troy Saunders has his latest conversation with the legendary Helen Scott, one the founders of The Three Degrees, best known for their 1973 worldwide hit, “When Will I See You Again”. The Three Degrees have been doing it and doing it strong for over 60 years and this special episode will focus on their incredible career.Their manager Richard Barrett brought three young teenagers, Scott, Fayette Pinkney and Janet Harmon, together in Philadelphia. The three didn't know each other before joining the group, which recorded for the Philly-based Swan Records. They scored their first hit in 1965 with the single “Gee Baby (I'm Sorry),” which Troy plays a sample of.Troy says that The Three Degrees helped initiate Philadelphia International Records (“You can say it, I won't” quips Scott). Philly International is the legendary Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff soul label that featured The O'Jays, Patti LaBelle, Teddy Pendergrass, and McFadden & Whitehead. Philadelphia International Records created a musical legacy that culminated in "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)," the 1974 hit recording by MFSB featuring vocals by The Three Degrees that was the theme for “Soul Train,” the first TV theme song (and perhaps the first disco song) to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. When Don Cornelius refused to allow any references to “Soul Train” in the single release, The Three Degrees' singing of the title was removed. But, the group would achieve their own major commercial success when “When Will I See You Again” became a hit later that year.Troy and Helen discuss how The Three Degrees had tremendous success in the U.K., where they performed for Prince Charles' 30th birthday celebration at Buckingham Palace. Not only did they tour the palace before most people were able to do so, but they were invited to attend the wedding reception of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, among the few Americans invited. The press even nicknamed The Three Degrees as “Charlie's Angels”. The group performed for almost every member of the royal family in support of their various trusts and charities.Helen is proud that The Three Degrees have maintained that name since 1963. It's been a joyful ride that not many groups have been able to accomplish. The conversation covers the wide range of styles that the group covered throughout their career and Helen is very open and candid in telling their amazing story. She also shares her suggestions to new artists who are just beginning their musical journey. Raised in Detroit, Michigan and vocally trained by their mom, gospel singer Mary Frazier Jones, Shirley, Brenda, and Valorie Jones were a musical wonder from the very start. Their misty harmonies caught the ears of some of the greatest performers of all time—from Norman Connors to Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross— who hired them as their backing vocalists. They became so damn good that Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff signed them to Philadelphia International Records and gave them all the attention they deserved with beautifully-crafted songs like “You're Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else,” “At Peace With Woman,” and “I Just Love The Man.”Their ride on the ‘love train' reached its ultimate destination with a mysterious jazz-infused track written by Dexter Wensel and Cynthia Biggs El, inspired by a failed college trip to Egypt. It almost never made it to the PIR catalogue, but after the girls laid their vocals, “Nights Over Egypt” grew to become a Quiet Storm standard and source of inspiration for Hip-Hop and Rap artists, musicians, and music lovers everywhere, cementing the singers' place in the industry.More on Shirley JonesWebsiteInstagramShow TracklistingWho Can I Run To (Xscape)Put A Little Love In Your Heart (Mary Frazier Jones)Oh I Feel Good (Mary Frazier Jones and the Jones Sisters)Almighty Fire (Aretha Franklin)Love Hangover (Diana Ross and the Jones Sisters Live at Midnight Special)You're Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else (The Jones Girls)I Just Love The Man (The Jones Girls)At Peace With Woman (The Jones Girls)Nights Over Egypt (The Jones Girls)I Won't Tell (Shirley Jones)Host and Producer: Diego MartinezExecutive Producer: NickFreshAudio Engineer: Adam Fogel Follow us on social media: @choonspod

Ashley Scott is a talented vocalist from Philadelphia, PA. He began singing and discovering music at the tender age of 3 from listening and watching is aunt Helen Scott of The Three Degrees. A foundation of meaningful music was instilled from his parent's record collection of artists like Earth, Wind, & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Chicago, The Delfonics, and naturally The Three Degrees. As a teenager, Ashley organized and performed in high school talent shows. The biggest part of Ashley's life and musical path came when he attended Howard University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Music. At Howard University Ashley studied jazz voice under legendary jazz drummer and vocalist Grady Tate and the late Webster Lewis. Ashley also joined the Howard University Gospel Choir, which has produced R&B artist Angela Winbush, Tawatha Agee of Mtume, Pure Soul, and Gospel great Richard Smallwood. During his tenure with the Howard Gospel Choir, Ashley has performed behind Edwin and Walter Hawkins and Dorinda Clark of The Clark Sisters. The choir was also privileged to perform for President Bill Clinton at The Department of Agriculture for the unveiling portrait of former Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy.Professionally he has sung background for Lady Alma and Jean Carn as well as shared the stage with Vivian Green, Bilal, Marcus Johnson and Grammy Award Winners Take 6. In the studio he has recorded vocals for Chavous, Sarah's Girl, Geneva Renee, Tye Tribbett, Jim Stephens, and Will Downing. In 2016, Ashley has released his debut single “Words.”  Ashley went back to his roots with the recording process of this song. “The song was written and composed by Alysha Ashley and I. She is from Kentucky and while composing this song I wanted to enhance the song with more lush arrangement and vocals, which is what you don't here in the music of today. With an ensemble of the best musicians and vocalists from the Philly area, we recorded the song in the Lab studios with engineer Craig White (formerly of Philadelphia International Records). We also had some additional production assistance from Will Downing which was an honor” Though the song is about being in love it is more about the interaction of a couple in the heat of a discussion. It encourages the listener to watch your “Words” and if you don't have an answer in that moment then it is ok to table it for another time.Ashley's latest single “Don't Throw Our Love Away” reached the #3 spot on the UK Soul Chart!!! To continue on the success of this song a remix, for all you that love house music, is scheduled for release in June. I can't wait!!I have known Ashley for some time now; and he is one of the coolest, honest, and genuine artists I know. Tune in to hear is journey! Obviously, a celebration was in order but since we are right smack dab in the middle of the pandemic we thought a little Darnels Cakes rooftop recording is in order. Here is my set from Saturday Night, it's not perfect ya kno recreational... things but it's filled with lots of Philly Soul, Disco and all around feel good music, I quite enjoyed my self. Philly really has so much rich musical history that doesn't get talked about enough; from Philadelphia International Records the roots of early Disco and House, to Fluid the infamous club that hosted a diverse group of so many influential parties (I got to throw one party there before it closed). I know the current scene is strong as fuck and can't wait to get back to it, safely. -mat https://www.CLUBBYBOY.com https://bit.ly/CBMATPATIG https://bit.ly/CBMATPATSC https://bit.ly/CBMATPATFB

The Victor Brooks Show

Eddie Levert, Sr. is one of the founders and lead singers of the legendary R&B group, The O'Jays. Known for his raspy voice and sexy moves, Eddie has a range that takes him from alto to second tenor. His style is full of emotion and deep passion. To add to his resume, Levert has written and produced many hits as well as mentoring his very successful sons Gerald and Sean who also became major forces in the music industry. With a career that spans over 50 years, Eddie Levert has done and seen enough to write many books, one of which him and his late son Gerald have already completed ('I Got Your Back' pub. 2008). To understand Eddie Levert, you can start with the journey of the O'Jays and keep going because there is much more. Eddie Levert was born June 16, 1942 in Bessemer, Alabama. At the age of 6 Eddie moved to Canton, Ohio where he attended church regularly and joined the church choir and began his musical journey. As Eddie continued singing into his teenage years he became a recognized voice in the church choir, sang in school plays and performed regularly on a gospel radio show. By the time he reached high school, young Eddie Levert knew that singing was what he wanted to do, teaming up with classmates Walter Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massey and Bill Isles to form a group called the Triumps. The Triumps played locally in Canton opening for different acts, playing sock hops and just about everything that came up. Their big break came when The Triumphs traveled to Cinncinatti to canvas King Records. King Records President Sid Nathan, immediately impressed, changed their name to The Mascots and signed them to his label. The Mascots' popularity grew as their songs could be heard with increased frequency on Cleveland radio stations. In 1969, The O'Jays signed with Philadelphia International Records where they released hit after hit and were propelled to stardom. The O'Jays later signed with EMI-Manhattan Records and Levert and Williams began co-writing and producing their own tracks. Their EMI debut album, “Let Me Touch You”, went to number three R&B and boasted "Lovin' You," the number one R&B hit from the summer 1987. In 1984, Eddie saw a proud moments as his sons Gerald and Sean, both still in high school, announced that they wanted to follow their dad's footsteps and make their way in the music industry. Eddie, using his influence, introduced his young sons around the industry while warning them that dad could help open the doors but it was themselves that would have to make it! And make it they did, as they teamed up with good friend Marc Gordon recording under the group name LeVert with four of their seven albums going platinum. In 1992 Eddie and son Gerald recorded "Baby Hold On to Me" which hit #1 R&B and #37 Pop on the charts. In 1995 Eddie and son Gerald recorded "Father & Son" Album with "Already Missing You" hit #7 R&B and #75 Pop on the charts. The album began the very successful 'Father and Son" tour that continues for years to come. In 1996 Eddie and son Gerald recorded "Wind Beneath My Wings" which hit #30 on the R&B charts. In 1998 The O'Jays receive the Rhythm & Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award presented by Eddie Levert's son Gerald at a ceremony in New York. In 2006, upon returning from a very successful South African tour with sons Gerald and Sean, tragedy struck as Eddie's son Gerald unexpectingly lost his life due to interactions between his prescribed medications. In 2007 Eddie and son Gerald's album recorded in 2006, "Something To Talk About" was released followed by the publication of the highly anticipated book "I Got Your Back" co-authored by Eddie and son Gerald. In 2008 tragedy struck again as Eddie's son Sean became a fatality of being denied needed prescription medication by government officials in Ohio. Later that year, while still trying to cope with the lost of both sons, Eddie and his late son Gerald are presented with "Best Duo or Group" Image Award. In 2009, The O'Jays were awarded BET's ‘Lifetime Achievement Award' and Eddie Levert was awarded the “Heroes and Legends Pacesetter Award”. On January 29, 2011 The O'Jays received the “Trumpet Lifetime Achievement Award”. Throughout Eddie Levert's career, the O'Jays have contributed 10 Gold Albums with 9 going Platinum and 10 #1 hits. Currently, Mr. Levert is actively performing and touring the world with the O'Jays well as performing as a solo artist currently touring with Johhny Gill, Keith Sweat and others.. In the Winter of 2011, Eddie Levert, Sr. completed his debut solo CD, “Eddie Levert: I Still Have It”, due to be released Spring of 2012. Mr. Levert is currently busy in the studio working on his next major project; the much anticipated release of the latest O'Jays CD. Throughout Eddie Levert's career, the O'Jays have contributed 10 Gold. Eddie Levert currently resides in Las Vegas, NV with his wife Raquel and daughter Ryan.

I am honored to include this episode of the Incredibly talented Shirley Jones Of The Jones Girls. Shirley shares her journey that was shared by her equally talented sisters, collectively known as The Jones Girls. For during a half decade between 1979 and 1984, Shirley, Valorie and Brenda Jones created some of the most glorious Soul music around. Born and raised in Detroit in a gospel singing family, the Jones Girls spent the better part of the 60s and 70s as sought-after backing vocalists, first regionally and then on a national basis. Their attempts to break through as a singing group on a number of smaller labels (including a brief stint at Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label) failed, and they seemed destined to spend their careers harmonizing behind bigger artists. However, while serving as Diana Ross's backing group during a mid-70s tour, the girls were "discovered" by Kenny Gamble and were signed to Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International Records. They came out smoking on PIR with their eponymous debut album and the infectious dance single "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else," which stormed the pop, soul and dance charts. They followed with the beautiful ballad, "We're A Melody," a prototypical Philly song with sophisticated arrangements wrapped around their wonderful harmonies. Both drop dead gorgeous and talented, the Jones Girls were individually accomplished singers; but together, their voices were absolutely heavenly. And at PIR they found the perfect match in the melodic writing and lush production that Gamble & Huff and Dexter Wansel/Cynthia Biggs provided them. Their second and third PIR albums were gems. At Peace With Woman and Get As Much Love As You Can featured a number of now classic cuts, including the club favorite "Nights Over Egypt," the sassy "I Just Love the Man" and a timeless cover of the Stylistics' "Children of the Night." In what would prove a career mistake, the Jones Girls left Philadelphia International for RCA Records in 1984, and couldn't recapture the magic. They retired the group in 1985 and lead singer Shirley Jones went solo, returning to PIR in 1986 for Always In The Mood and its #1 hit, "Do You Get Enough Love." She continued to record sporadically over the next decade, and the group reunited from time to time for special concerts and issued a 1992 reunion album, Coming Back, in Europe. The sisters spent much of the next decade raising their children, occasionally reuniting for shows (particularly in Europe) and providing guest vocal help to other artists. They released Best of the Jones Girls in 2000, a great sampler of their work on PIR and an essential purchase for lovers of sophisticated, well orchestrated soul music. Sadly, sister Valorie died the next year. Currently, Brenda Jones lives in Atlanta and sings frequently with her four-piece band, performing both Jazz and R&B numbers, including several Jones Girls tunes.

Michael Awkward’s Philadelphia Freedoms captures the disputes over the meanings of racial politics and black identity during the post-King era in the City of Brotherly Love. Looking closely at four cultural moments, he shows how racial trauma and his native city’s history have been entwined. Awkward introduces each of these moments with poignant personal memories of the decade in focus, chronicling the representation of African American freedom and oppression from the 1960s to the 1990s. Philadelphia Freedoms explores NBA players’ psychic pain during a playoff game the day after Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination; themes of fatherhood and black masculinity in the soul music produced by Philadelphia International Records; class conflict in Andrea Lee’s novel Sarah Phillips; and the theme of racial healing in Oprah Winfrey’s 1997 film, Beloved. Awkward closes his examination of racial trauma and black identity with a discussion of candidate Barack Obama’s speech on race at Philadelphia’s Constitution Center, pointing to the conflict between the nation’s ideals and the racial animus that persists even into the second term of America’s first black president. Michael Awkward, Gayl A. Jones Professor of Afro-American Literature and Culture at the University of Michigan, is the author, most recently, of Burying Don Imus: Anatomy of a Scapegoat and Soul Covers: Rhythm and Blues Remakes and the Struggle for Artistic Identity.

Around 1970, Gamble Huff Productions became Philadelphia International Records. When Eugene Dozier left the label, Sigler inherited his office. Sigler's songwriting break came when a tune he co-wrote with Phil Hurtt, "(You Are My) Sunshine", was released as a followup single to the O'Jays' million selling 'Back Stabbers'. Other Sigler/Hurtt tunes included on the 'Back Stabbers' album were "When The World Is At Peace" and "Who Am I". The O'Jays' followup album, 'Ship Ahoy', had Sigler's first solo written song, "You Got Your Hooks In Me", and the Sigler/Gamble tune "Don't You Call Me Brother".In 1978, Sigler, bringing along Instant Funk, switched to Goldmind, a label started by MFSB guitarist Norman Harris and distributed by Salsoul Records. With his first release for the label, Sigler scored a Top Ten R&B single with "Let Me Party With You (Party, Party, Party)". The album of the same name was a smash in disco clubs. When Goldmind folded, all of its acts were transferred to Salsoul. About a year after its release and thanks to a Larry Levan remix, "I Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl)", went on to be Instant Funk's breakthrough hit (number one R&B). In 1979 The Jones Girls “You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else” showed Gamble and Huff still had the magic touch. The classic went top ten on Billboards' R&B and Disco Charts. However, lead singer Shirley Jones and sisters Brenda and Valorie were not new to the game. Gospel singer Mary Frazier Jones groomed her daughters unique harmonies when they were babies in their hometown Detroit. By the time Shirley and her sisters signed with Philadelphia International Records, they were teenage veterans. The Jones Girls traveled the world for several years as fellow Detroiter Diana Ross' back up singers. Ms. Ross even let the girls shine with their own spot where they sang “If I Ever Lose This Heaven”. Diana Ross told Gamble and Huff The Jones Girls were too good to be anybody's back-up singers forever. Those Philly years provided Shirley and her sisters with a string of hits. They include “Who Can I Run To”, “I Just Love The Man”, “Dance Turned Into A Romance” and their Grammy-Nominated classic “Nights Over Egypt”. After a brief unsuccessful stay at RCA Records , The Jones Girls decided to take a hiatus. Brenda got married and Valorie entered college. But Shirley still wanted to sing. She returned to Philadelphia International Records in 1985 as a solo artist. Shirleys' 1986 Debut album “Always In The Mood” proved she could handle the spotlight alone. Her 1986 classic “Do You Get Enough Love” stayed number one on Billboards R&B Chart for Three weeks!!! “Do You Get Enough Love” proved to be prophetic.
