Host David Manilow is a huge fan of Ethiopian food. Spices including turmeric and cardamom are alluring, no doubt, but it's really the communal nature of Ethiopian dining that makes the meal special. In this episode, Manilow talks with chef Tigist Reda of Demera — an Ethiopian restaurant in Uptown — about her life in Chicago, how she became a revered cultural ambassador, and why you won't need a fork to enjoy her food. A mythic figure in the Southern California arts scene, Kamau Daáood is a performance poet, educator, and community arts activist. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he was instrumental in transforming Leimert Park into a cultural center and is widely acknowledged as a major force driving L.A.'s Black cultural renaissance. Kamau was a member of the Watts Writers Workshop and developed his style as a "word musician" with the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, under the direction of Horace Tapscott. Over the course of hundreds of readings, his words have lifted audiences from their seats. He's shared a podium with Gil Scott-Heron, The Last Poets, Amiri Baraka, and Sonia Sanchez, and has read in Egypt and Somalia. In this episode, we discuss his passion, energy, and intensity as a poet and ambassador of arts and culture for the community in L.A., and his pride in contributing still to its vibrant traditions. We discuss jazz and what legends like John Coltrane, Billy Higgins, and Mr. Tapscott have meant to him and his journey, as well as his relationship with Juno Lewis—the master instrument-maker, vocalist, and percussionist who played on Coltrane's classic album Kulu Se Mama.

John BramblittAfter losing his sight in 2001, John decided to pick up a paintbrush. He never expected anyone to see any of his paintings; he just knew he needed to reconnect with the visual world he had lost. Since then John's work has been featured in major news outlets and traveled the world. He has worked with celebrities such as Tony Hawk, Jeff Bridges, and Lyle Lovett, among others. In 2017 John partnered with Delta to paint a Boeing 737 promoting the Rock-in-Rio concert. John has received three presidential service awards for his innovative multi-sensory art workshops and has been named a Cultural Ambassador to the US. Not only is John ranked as the #1 blind painter in the world, but he is also now the only blind muralist having completed projects in New York, Dallas, and Fort Worth. John has shared his story with audiences around the world for the past ten years, energizing organizations and motivating people to exceed their limits. John's unique journey from the dark has enabled him to connect with a visual world and act as a beacon for others experiencing struggles. www.bramblitt.com
Sonny Ledford is a bird-clan Cherokee, cultural ambassador, artisan, & Warrior of AniKituhwah hailing from the Qualla Boundary surrounding Cherokee, North Carolina. Instantly engrossing, Sonny describes his ancestral land, the Trail of Tears, guerrilla warfare & war paint. For his first story, we hear of a numinous performance of The Warrior Dance at Colonial Williamsburg. From there it's an immersion into the old ways: Sequoyah [inventor of the Cherokee syllabary]; fish & bear traps; blowguns; hunting with wolves; ear gauges; pipes; clan mothers; a strict amorous taboo; & praying to The Creator. For Sonny's second story, he tells of a community encounter with The Deer Woman. We close this epic episode on a bigfoot landmark, boarding schools, & traditional masks.Plan a trip to Cherokee North Carolina , visit The Museum of the Cherokee Indian & check out Sonny's troop, The Warriors of AnikituhwahSupport Our Numinous Nature on Patreon.Follow Our Numinous Nature & my naturalist illustrations on InstagramCheck out my shop of shirts, prints, and books featuring my artContact: herbaceoushuman@gmail.com
The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
https://youtu.be/DYR0imBB4KI Host: Fraser Cain ( @fcain )Special Guest: If you are a long-time viewer of the Weekly Space Hangout, then Dr. Paul Matt Sutter ( http://www.pmsutter.com/ & @PaulMattSutter ) is no stranger to you at all. For several years, he was one of our on-air journalists (along with Dr. Kimberly Cartier and Dr. Morgan Rehnberg.) Since leaving the WSH fold, Paul has continued to be one of the busiest people around. Tonight we are excited to welcome Paul back to the show (even if it is for only one night) so he can bring us all up to date with everything he has been doing - as well as hopefully share a few exciting things he has planned. But first, let me share some of the highlights. In addition to being the author of two books (with a third in the works that is due in 2023,) Paul regularly writes articles for Space.com, Ars Technica, Nautilus, Undark, Live Science, and many more , with his articles syndicating to news outlets worldwide. When he isn't writing new content for publication everywhere, Paul hosts numerous science shows across all platforms, including "How the Universe Works" on Science Channel, "Space Out" on Discovery, and "Edge of Knowledge" on Ars Technica. And who can forget that he writes and hosts his "Ask a Spaceman" podcast, which is one of the top podcasts in the world! Oh - and if that isn't enough - did I mention Paul has been traveling extensively through his collaboration with Syren Modern Dance. "Ticktock" is a stage experience exploring the nature of time through a woven performance of narration, music, and movement. And this year he joined Syren as a U.S. Cultural Ambassador to the World Expo in Dubai! But perhaps the most exciting news is that in December 2021 Paul and Kate St. Amand, co-artistic director of Syren Modern Dance (and the real brains behind "Ticktock") became engaged!!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU BOTH!!! Paul earned his PhD in physics in 2011 as a Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellow at the University of Illinois. He then spent three years as a research fellow at the Paris Institute for Astrophysics followed by two years at the Trieste Observatory in Italy. Paul currently holds a research professorship at the Institute for Advanced Computational Science at Stony Brook University and a guest researcher position at the Flatiron Institute in New York City. Previously he held a joint position as the chief scientist at the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus, Ohio, and as a cosmological researcher at the Ohio State University.
