Website/blog: https://nostalgiaking.com/IG: https://www.instagram.com/skemerichards/Mixes: https://soundcloud.com/HotpeasandbuttaPhilly legend Skeme Richards dives deep into the rich tapestry of music culture, exploring the intersection of funk, hip hop, and the art of DJing. As he recounts his formative years growing up in a city pulsating with musical heritage, Skeme illustrates how funk, soul, and disco served as the soundtrack to his childhood. His parents and grandparents instilled a love for music that would eventually define his career. He reflects on the rich cultural landscape of Philadelphia, highlighting the importance of Philadelphia International Records in the development of disco and the communal spirit found in local block parties. These experiences not only shaped his identity as a DJ but also sparked a lifelong passion for collecting and preserving music. The conversation delves deeper into Skeme's experiences as a DJ and collector, emphasizing the joy of digging for rare vinyl records. He discusses the evolving music scene and the resurgence of funk, particularly in Japan, where he has found a second home among fellow collectors and enthusiasts. Skeme's belief in the importance of lineage and honoring those who paved the way for future generations is a recurring theme throughout the episode. He shares anecdotes about his interactions with hip hop legends and how these relationships have enriched his understanding of music. Skeme's philosophy on DJing transcends mere performance; it's about creating a meaningful connection with the audience through the music he plays. As the episode culminates, listeners are treated to Skeme's insights on the balance between commercial appeal and artistic integrity in DJing. He challenges the notion that commercial music lacks authenticity, asserting that many of the beloved tracks we cherish were once commercial hits. By embracing both the underground and the mainstream, Skeme demonstrates how DJs can navigate the music landscape while staying true to their roots. His unwavering dedication to music as an art form and cultural expression resonates throughout the dialogue, making this episode a rich tapestry of stories, insights, and reflections on the power of music to inspire and connect.Mentioned in this episode:Reissued classics from Be With RecordsGet 10% off at bewithrecords.com using the code ONCEADJ
DJs have always played an integral role in Black culture. From the underground clubs of Chicago and Detroit to the block parties of the Bronx, these sonic architects have built spaces that challenge oppression and foster community. So, how do these masters of sound harness this technical, emotional, and intuitive element to create environments for Black expression? Today, we're diving into the art of space-making through the DJ: how they use music to guide, unite, and liberate us, one beat at a time. And on this episode's ones and twos, we have DJ Skeme Richards, AKA the Nostalgia King. Skeme has traveled the world from his home base in Philly, liberating hearts, minds, bodies, and souls. His Nostalgia King blog chronicles the history of hip-hop, jazz, and funk through the turntable wizardry of the disc jockey. The 32 best characters from the movie will be facing off to see who the best character is. Will it be the favorite KASE2, or maybe Skeme's mom Barbara. Perhaps it will be a dark horse like Ed Koch or Det. Bernie Jacobs. Part 2 of 2 from Dr. Campbell's interview with the Nostalgia King, Skeme Richards for our Champions of the Culture: Modern Advocates Preserving Black Music special season. When you think of Philadelphia's rich history of musical contributions, you instantly notice that it is also a city known for birthing some of the greatest internationally known DJ's who are masters of their crafts. One such person who has deep roots and connections to the City of Brotherly Love is Skeme Richards. What started as a hobby in the early 80's has turned into an amazing musical career taking him across the globe as a professional DJ and music connoisseur to play for events small and large, from night clubs to festivals, art galleries to film premieres and even to play guest spots on both independent and commercial radio.Digging and spinning genres across the board, from Hip Hop to House, Funk & Soul classics to Disco, Jazz and beyond, Skeme keeps things classic and refreshingly new while continuously striving to separate himself from the pack. While maintaining originality in his brand, he keeps his first class status as a true party rocker all while satisfying and educating the partygoer at the same time. Quality is always of the utmost importance and the Skeme Richards brand has become synonymous with being a global cultural ambassador in connecting audiences of diverse backgrounds worldwide.Skeme Richards is known within a large circle of Funk & Soul aficionado's, DJ's, vinyl heavyweight collectors, artists and record labels and has toured playing 7” vinyl during some of the most unique and successful nights across the globe with his Butta 45's party which began in 2009. Not one to be a format purist and sticking to what has become the now trendy 45, he's known for packing crates of Disco 12” as well while toting them on flights globally to entertain his audience and also maintaining a long standing tradition of what the DJ has been known for, his personal selections. No matter the genre, Skeme Richards fits the bill with his delivery, vast musical knowledge and understanding of what it takes to rock a party by reading the crowd properly and reacting accordingly. With only 24 hours in a day, Skeme wears many hats that show his dedication to music. On the other side of the musical spectrum, he is also a writer and journalist who reviews vinyl releases from labels and artists across the globe on his Nostalgia King site which is the go to source for DJ's globally to find out the latest releases that he gives the co-sign to. Over the years, labels have come to trust his ear and taste in music as the testing ground for new releases that he often introduces to dance floors months in advance before they're officially released. Over the years, he has also contributed content to print publications including Disco Patrick's Hot Stuff Magazine (Netherlands) and Street Love Magazine (Germany).Through his dedication and love of the music, the self-proclaimed “Nostalgia King” has built his brand as a “tastemaker” of sorts and continues to “make and break” records in the same fashion that many of the great DJ's in the past. As a world traveler, you can find Skeme playing parties across the globe and touching down in some of his favorite destinations including London, Amsterdam, Germany, Russia, New York, Los Angeles, Japan, China and Korea and has shared stages with some of the best DJ's and performers globally.Support the show

Jahdira Atkins, professionally known as Billy B, was born in the Cypress Hill project of East New York Brooklyn. As a child, Billy sought music as a comfort from the mayhem surrounding her. She fell in love with Missy Elliot's swagger, Nicki Minaj's lyrical expertise, Patty Labelle's soul, and Aretha Franklin's range. However, Billy didn't begin pursuing music until 2015. Over the next few years Billy B collaborated with various artists and producers; 808 Mafia, June The Jenius, Dizzy Banko, Nico Demi, Synesthetic Nation, Sukihana , Fetty Luciano Connie Diiamond , and Skeme. But it was her breakout feature with fellow raptress Lola Brooke on the hit-song "Don't play with it” that recently cracked Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart that showed the world that the women in hip hop is definitely taking over. In this interview we discuss her upbringing, her musical influences, camaraderie amongst female rappers, sexism and misogyny in hip hop, raising a son, her family and men in her dm's plus more! Skeme Richards is one of Phillys greatest sons! Amongst a million other things, he is a member of the legendary Rock Steady Crew, a global DJ, cultural ambassador, burger connoisseur, and preserver of culture. Having started Djing in the earliest days of "hip-hop," Skeme, has nearly 40 years of experiences and observations as an active participant. Known as the "Nostalgia King," hes taken note of the dynamic shifts and changes within emceeing, djing, graffiti, and breaking; as well as their relationships to various subcultures through the lense of a life long Philadelphia resident that is still rocking parties around the world. Were big fans of Skemes website, nostalgiaking.com, which documents of his global journeys but it was an honor to sit down with the King himself to kick off the Reiwa era. We could have sat down with skeme for a week and barely broke the surface of his experiences, so we kept this episode long for yall. Also we had the folks Average Guy Named Ran come through to take some photos and video. So be prepared for that. Check it out, expeditiously. This week on Episode #6, we have a special treat for you FleaMarket Funk readers and radio listeners out there. We were joined by The Nostalgia King, Soul Brother #1, Butta Brother and Hot Peas and Butta founder Skeme Richards as well a drummer Soki Kimura from Osaka Monaurail. They both stopped by the studio after we took them record digging and out for some burgers here in Jersey City. During the course of the show we play some funky stuff from around the globe, talk the 45 game, reissuing records, choice hamburgers, shady promoters, staying in our own lane, and more. We also talk to drummer Soki Kimura from Tokyo, Japan about his involvement in Osaka Monaurail, his influences, and his touring time with the great Marva Whitney. After our interview (which took place in a raging snowstorm!), Skeme gets down to business and laces us with a 35 minute mix of funky records of all sorts, mostly from Japan and abroad. Needless to say, there is no track list, so like the old days, you'll have to search for these titles. We were honored to have both in the studio, and hope you enjoy this as much as we did! It's definitely one for the books. Artist: Skeme Album: The Statement We stumbled onto Skeme while searching through the various mix tape sites on the internet. One thing we really liked about Skeme are his choice of beats, he has a really nice original sound. Most bad artist try to sound like the greats which is flattery in its highest form, but that’s not what real die hard hip hop fans want. Being original is the best policy and we think Skeme has done just that. Andjety is located on the east coast so when some good west coast rap comes alone it’s gold. Our favorite track is “Let It Breathe.” We would like to wish Skeme success in his career, and we hope you enjoy the track we picked out.
