In the first hour of this show I played a mixed bag of bits I've downloaded reasonably recently. Still having all sorts of computer issues but I've managed to get them on a USB at least. Nice mix of vibes - some quite chilled and balearic stuff building towards a few soulful house numbers. I didn't manage to get a guest for hour 2, so I thought why don't I do a mix of my own stuff? So that's what I did - there's 23 of my edits, originals, remixes, rejigs and collabs crammed in! I've seen other people play sets of just their own stuff and honestly never thought I'd be in a position to do so, and you know what? It was a whole lot of fun! A frosty morning in the middle of winter. A small park not far from your home: pine trees with snow caps and a ski tracks parallel to the footpaths. You're wearing an unloved heavy sheepskin coat (but it's so cool to draw patterns on it with your fingers) and fleece pants which make funny rustle noises. The sky is so blue it hurts to look at it. You're riding on the sled down the steep slope of a dried up pond. The wind whistles in your ears and your eyes become watery because of the cold wind. Somewhere behind your back standing your parents: mother has a blush on her cheeks, father has probably pulled out a pack of «Marlboro». After all of that there will be hot tea from a Chinese thermos and a marmalade candies, which lying now in cellophane bag. Would it ever get any better? Of course it will. Manila-based DJ and producer Pamcy has been making waves in the international music scene with her latest EP, ’Sauce Isle’, which is inspired by the sauces of different cuisines across Asia. She’s added some extremely vibrant flavour to the series this week with a house mix packed full of upbeat summery bangers. Featuring tracks from Lay-Far, Ryuta Muramatsu and Lovebirds, this is a mix that’ll leave you daydreaming about dancing into the early hours of the morning on warm Filipino coastlines. Prior to her incredible recent release through Jun Kamoda’s Jun Records we were overjoyed to hear Pamcy’s 2019 LP, 'BINIBINI' (the title is an old Filipino honorific term for women). In making the album, Pamcy drew inspiration from the everyday experiences, concepts, and objects that have shaped her identity and, on a larger scale, are cultural artefacts of femininity. Speaking in a recent interview with Mixmag, she explained: “Celebrating my identity as a Filipina is not something I deliberately try to do all the time, but I think all of my projects have that in common because everything that I make is rooted in my own reality and identity”. Jonna is the UK-based label owner of City Fly Records and Mysterious Works, two imprints that specialise in releasing soul-flecked bombs. This week we have friend of the label, all round top guy and the guy that hooked us up many a tasty premiere. It's Jonna the label owner of City Fly & Mysterious Works. He's produced exquisite music on BBE, Flat White Records, Intimate Friends, Lumberjacks in Hell, R2, Shadeleaf, The Groove Stage. He's about to drop one of his most ambitious projects to date; 'City Fly's 'Fly Family Vol.1' dropping exclusively on Traxsource on 17/02/20 & everywhere else from 02/03/20. The album is drenched in deep, soul flecked bombs ranging from the jazzy hip-hop intro of Cologne's Ugly Drums who teams up with Detroit MC :brownstudy to the heads down, no nonsense 'Warehouse Shit' from Simbad. Dolette McDonald — maybe you know of her vocal work with the Talking Heads, or Sting. She was a member of both groups — both touring and recording. But Dolette's catalog goes much deeper — how about backing vocals for Nile Rodgers' Chic, The Rolling Stones, Steve Winwood, Nona Hendryx, Juan Gabriel for example! Dolette is a friend of FSQ ; she leads vocal duties on a few of our original FSQ releases via Soul Clap and Midnight Riot Records. Over the course of two hours we showcase some of the rarest jams featuring Dolette as a prominent vocalist, including her hook laden performances for new wave dons Blancmange, Cabaret Voltaire, and ABC. On our recent trip to Japan we were lucky enough to run into a quite happy young man in downtown Shibuya. After a couple of beers and trip down the rabbit hole of dance music banter we realised we had a lot in common. Behold! My set from S*A*S*H – from Sunday, 17 August – is now up and available... Naturally, I was absolutely stoked to have been asked to play at arguably Sydney's biggest weekly event, which boasted a star-studded local line-up and included the bookings of Alex Flatner, Sean Patrick and Nox. What's more, the S*A*S*H boys were been kind enough to give me a very generous three-hour set, opening the second room from 6 PM. This was a varied set, featuring some deep numbers up front, with a rather "sunset" housey stanza in the middle, and closing off with some bigger grooves – all around 116-117 BPM, just the way I like it! I had a wonderful time playing this set, and could have comfortably stretched on another three hours! Big shouts to the S*A*S*H boys, Cris, Matt and Kerry for having me on.
