This week Johnny C has a special guest from his early days at NYU and the New York City theater. Eric Bogosian is one of the most prolific actors/playwrights today. You may have seen him recently on Anne Rice's Interview With A Vampire.   Eric Bogosian was born in Boston and grew up in Woburn, Massachusetts. After graduating from Woburn Memorial High School in 1971, he attended the University of Chicago and graduated from Oberlin College in 1976, whereupon he moved to New York City. In New York he was hired by the Kitchen as an assistant, established a dance series there and after five years left to devote all his energies to his theater work. Between 1976 and 1982, Bogosian wrote, directed and/or starred in over sixteen productions Off-Off-Broadway. In 1982, he toured the Midwest with Fab Five Freddy and the Rock Steady Crew.   In the early 1980's Eric Bogosian became well-known in New York for his intense one-man theater pieces, winning the Obie Award three times as well as the Drama Desk Award. In 1983, after attending one of his one-man shows, Larry Cohen cast Bogosian as the homicidal director in his low-budget film Special Effects (1984). Four years later, Bogosian's Pulitzer-nominated play, (in which he also starred), "Talk Radio" caught the attention of the greater film world. Robert Altman cast Bogosian in his film of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (1988) while producer Edward R. Pressman obtained the rights to the play and brought it to director Oliver Stone. Stone and Bogosian adapted the play script to film script, Bogosian again played the lead and the film of Talk Radio (1988) opened in December 1988. Bogosian received the prestigious "Silver Bear" at the 1989 Berlin Festival for his work on the film.   After the release of "Talk Radio", Bogosian worked regularly as an actor in film and television while remaining very active in the theater. 1994 was a banner year in which Bogosian co-starred with Steven Seagal in Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995) as the diabolical "Travis Dane", was featured in Dolores Claiborne (1995), staged another one-man show Off-Broadway and authored the play, "subUrbia" directed by Robert Falls and produced by Lincoln Center Theater, ("subUrbia" was adapted for film by director Richard Linklater). Around this time, Bogosian would also cameo appearances in Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry (1997), Atom Egoyan's Ararat (2002), Cindy Sherman's Office Killer (1997) and Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996).   In the 1990's Bogosian continued to write for film and TV, adapting his own work as well as receiving assignments from studios. He began to write for television when he was invited to co-create a show for Steven Spielberg: High Incident (1996) in 1996. As an actor, in 2003, he co-starred with Val Kilmer as the notorious Eddie Nash in James Cox's Wonderland (2003). In 2006 he was invited onboard Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001) as Captain Danny Ross (where he appeared in over sixty episodes).   In 2010, Bogosian starred on Broadway in Donald Margulies' "Time Stands Still" with Laura Linney, Brian d'Arcy James, Alicia Silverstone and Christina Ricci.   In 2013, Bogosian created a website featuring his numerous monologues performed by notable actors. Visit 100monologues.com to view the complete catalog of over 75 monologues.   More recently, Bogosian landed a series of featured television roles on Netflix's The Get Down (2016), Showtime's Billions (2016) and as Senator Gil Eavis on HBO's Succession (2018).   Bogosian has been featured in Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie's Uncut Gems (2019) (starring Adam Sandler).   In addition to his numerous plays, Bogosian is the author of three novels "Mall", "Wasted Beauty" and "Perforated Heart." His non-fiction history, Operation Nemesis: The Assassination Plot that Avenged the Armenian Genocide was published by Little, Brown in 2015.   He lives in New York City with his wife, director Jo Bonney with whom he has two children; Travis Bogosian and Harry Bogosian Produced by John C McGinleye and Angie Quidim  Copyright TME Productions 2023-2024 all rights reserved  May not be used without permission.

The ‘breakdance scene' from the 1983 movie ‘Flashdance' brought us together, 40 years after the filming, and Mr. Freeze recounts his memories of filming the groundbreaking dance sequences. Allen had visited the site several years ago, in Pittsburgh's Strip District, and Andy followed in his footsteps, earlier this year. This discussion was a rare opportunity to directly connect with pop-culture greatness, and document one of our collaborative missions to find an elusive location. Growing up in his hometown of Atlanta, artist/producer Sol Messiah was inundated with the rich and energizing spirit of Hip Hop culture. Getting his start as a breakdancer, Sol Messiah built his reputation as a b-boy before traveling to NYC to join the legendary Rock Steady Crew. Inspired by New York Hip Hop legends, Sol Messiah fell in love with another foundational element of Hip Hop culture: DJing. Spending untold hours mastering the skill, and acquiring the musical knowledge required of the DJ, Sol Messiah was prepared to make the leap into producing records, the next step in his musical journey. A talented and skilled producer, Sol Messiah eventually linked up with Atlanta legend and veteran producer Dallas Austin. For years, Messiah would work alongside Dallas to create a deep catalog filled with timeless tracks for TLC, Madonna, Monica, Boyz II Men and more. At the same time, Messiah would continue to build his reputation as a DJ, securing several club residencies and gaining popularity and acclaim for his classic Sol Messiah Mixtape series. After separating with Austin in 1997 to pursue his own musical path independently, Sol Messiah spent years building an impressive catalog and further established himself as a go-to producer for a wide range of acts. Some of his most notable credits from this era include “Rain” and “Picture Perfect” from Chamillionaire's platinum album The Sound Of Revenge, Nappy Roots' “Roll Again”, David Banner's “Ridin'” featuring Talib Kweli & Dead Prez as well as Dead Prez's “Hell Yeah”, featuring Jay-Z. Soon, Sol Messiah would embark on a fruitful musical partnership with a fierce lyricist named Sa-Roc. Together, Sa-Roc and Messiah have released over a dozen projects thus far, including Sa-Roc's groundbreaking 2020 debut on Rhymesayers, The Sharecropper's Daughter. As a duo, Sa-Roc and Sol Messiah have amassed a global reach, touring internationally and rocking crowds across continents. They have performed at the legendary Jazz Cafe in London, performed live for BBC and have shared the stage with luminaries such as Common, The Roots and Jay Electronica. On his latest album, GOD CMPLX, Sol Messiah connects with some of the finest MCs in the game to create a collection of head-bopping Hip Hop music that's both innovative and inspiring. Featuring guest performances from KXNG Crooked, Sa-Roc, Evidence of Dilated Peoples, Locksmith, Stic.Man of Dead Prez, Che Noir, Lyric Jones, Mickey Factz, Cambatta, Planet Asia, TriState, Narubi Selah, Murs, Da BackWudz, Slug of Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, and Baba Zumbi of Zion I, GOD CMPLX is a powerful and engaging project. The album comes out swinging with the title track, “GOD CMPLX,” which features KXNG Crooked and Sa-Roc trading slick and fiery bars over an epic, grandiose beat. Showcasing the versatility of Sol Messiah's sound, “Limitless” finds Evidence getting busy over a dramatic, piano & string-infused track. From the brassy, drum-heavy sound of “The Hard Way” (feat. Che Noir, Sa-Roc & Lyric Jones) to the haunting vocal harmonies of “Sol Supreme” (feat. Cambatta), GOD CMPLX is not only full of bangers, it's also a diverse gallery of sounds that serves as a testament to Sol Messiah's skills as both a producer and a visionary. The journey that Sol Messiah began so many years ago, as a youth discovering Hip Hop in Atlanta, has no ending in sight. With his gifted ear and fierce dedication to Hip Hop culture, he continues to use his craft to build his own body of work as well as help maintain and elevate the culture of Hip Hop as a whole. Breaking, also known as break-dancing, borne in New York City in the 1970s, is set to make its debut at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. Four-time breaking world champion, BoxWon (Benyaamin Barnes McGee), traces how breaking went from Bronx block parties to NYC's downtown art scene, to the world. Speaking to legends of breaking, such as Rock Steady Crew's Ken Swift and B-Boy Glyde from Dynamic Rockers, BoxWon reveals how punk impresario, Malcolm McLaren, helped breaking become a worldwide craze in the 1980s - before it vanished. But when the mainstream got bored, breaking didn't die - it just went back underground, only to re-emerge a decade later more extreme than ever. Breaking is once again a global phenomenon, with pro dancers coming from all corners of the world – Russia, Japan, and South Korea are now home to some of the world's very best. But when the International Olympic Committee confirmed breaking as a new sport for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, many people were taken by surprise. The last time they had heard of breaking was back in the 1980s - a fad which swiftly disappeared with shoulder pads and leg warmers. Breaking Through tells the fascinating story of how this dance-form survived and evolved outside of the media spotlight, fuelled by the scene's die-hard devotees. Now, as it attracts global corporate sponsorship and demands for more stringent rules and regulations, we hear about the breaking world's own internal battle to maintain its integrity. We love this summer warm up mix our brother DJ SEB ONE put together as a warm up for SOUL OF SYDNEY PICNIC at SYDNEY FESTIVAL back in 2016. It features 30 minutes of original SOUL & RHYTHM & BLUES joints & some personal favourites including the likes of Nina Simone, George McRae, Kool & The Gang, Quince Jones & more. Nothing but love for the Sydney Festival jams we were lucky to host for a few years over summer in Hyde Park, they were some of the nicest afternoons of music, it was so nice to be able to see generations of the same family just getting down and soaking up the Sydney Sunshine & some of the great music we were given a platform to play. This mix right here is a small taste of some of that music we used to play very early on just as people were having lunch on the grass. Track List / Nina Simone - Sinnerman (Live Intro) Minnie Ripperton - Memory Lane Ohio Players - Pride & Vanity Labi Siffre - My Song Quincy Jones - One Hundred Ways Claudja Barry - Love for the Safe of Love Cal Tjader - Walk on by Mary Jane Girls - All Night Long Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne Jeanne & The Darlings - Soul Girl George McRae - I get Lifted The Supremes - Time to Break Down. Kool & The Gang - Too Hot - About DJ Seb One. In the winter of 2011, he was pulled away from the bar in a downtown Sydney watering hole. The following phrase, spoken urgently, would set the next three years in motion. “Hey, I’ve got to go rehearse for a dance showcase, cover the booth for the next hour and a half.” Things have come a long way for Seb One since that night of frantic under the booth googling on an iPhone 3GS, “Scratch Live Instruction Manual." Since then he has opened for the prestigious Dancekool Volume annual hiphop festival/competition alongside such notaries as DJ Matt Fernandez and DJ Naiki and has proven himself capable of supplying the backbone for dance battles of all styles in Sydney. Among those Seb One has had the honour of playing for include notable hiphop personalities Buddha Stretch and Loose Joint (Elite Force, NYC), B-Boy Y-not (Rock Steady Crew, NYC) B-Boy Physicx (Rivers Crew, Korea), Kumari Suraj (The Waackers) and Mamson (Wanted Posse, France). Bridging his love of music and food he further supplied the beats section of the Good Food Month "Bagels, Beer and Beats,” at Helm Bar, an event jointly held by Helm Bar and Brooklyn Boy Bagels. More recently Seb One partnered with Red Bull to provide the VIP foyer pre-show entertainment for the Sydney leg of the Rihanna tour. Among his other pursuits he is a semi-active photojournalist and acts as Dancekool Studio’s Systems Technician. Acknowledging the need for a strong foundation in today’s budding talent and in order to give back to the community he grew from, he also assists DJ Naiki in a DJ course/workshop held at Dancekool premises. A lot of history with insight into his career and how he has over 30,000 records in every room in his house including the kitchen but not the bathroom. This was dope to do. Much respect to Eclipse! Anthony “Q-Unique” Quiles is the perfect guest to start off the podcast for 2019. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he's a member of New York's legendary breakdancing group the Rock Steady Crew and co-founder of the iconic underground hip-hop group the Arsonists. He's traveled the world as frontman for his own rock groups StillWell (with members of Korn and P.O.D) and now King's Bounty. And - no surprise for MAM listeners - he's a lifelong martial artist. From his hardscrabble background in south Brooklyn to hanging with hip-hop legends to appearing on stage across the globe, Q's is a true New York story. He takes us on a journey through his early days kickboxing with Brooklyn icons Louis Neglia and Jerry Fontanez; how martial arts values influenced his life as an artist; the lessons he learned as a martial arts parent, shepherding his own son through to black belt; returning to training in his 40s (and having to spar with Shihan Dunn); reflections on his life and relationships in the music industry; and his ongoing commitment to improvement, progress and black belt as a student of Jiu-Jitsu. Funny, deep, charismatic and memorable, this episode explores what it means to be an artist, a parent, a practitioner and a citizen of the world with someone whose creative vision is sharpened by his martial arts training. Q showcases the best part of a martial arts life. We sincerely hope you enjoy the conversation. I met up with Anthony "Q-Unique" Quiles at a coffee spot on 86th Street in the heart of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn to talk about a couple, two, three things. We talk how he was introduced and brought into the Hip-Hop subculture by "Crazy Legs" of the Legendary "Rock Steady Crew" to being a member of the underground classic group "The Arsonists". How he then went solo and put out several records under "Q-Unique" along with his metal and grunge background. He met "Fieldy" from "Korn", toured with them for several years and learned how a successful metal band works behind the scenes. He then joined a band group called "Stillwell" with members of Korn and P.O.D. then embarked onto his own group "Kings Bounty" with guitarist Mike Dijan. Very cool, laid back conversation with a super nice guy, all while drinking coffee with our pinkies out and eating avocado toast. Yes... we did. Enjoy.

DJ Red Alert is a member of the hip hop culture that is known for bringing the music to the people. He began his career as part of the Afrika Bambaataa's Zulu Nation and earned the reputation as a top notch DJ. At one point in the early 80's, Red Alert's equipment was stolen. Once he was able to get at new setup Bambaataa and other members of the Nation were moving to clubs in Manhattan. Red Alert continued to draw a following in Harlem.Red Alert channeled his energies and musical talent into two daily shows on the nations #1 radio station, New York's WQHT HOT 97.1 FM.He has received numerous awards and accolades including a special award at the first annual Rap Hall of Fame Awards show. The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from IMPACT music trade publication for 1998 and the 1997 Mix Show DJ of the year award from GAVIN. In addition DJ Red Alert was named one of the 50 most influential people in music by Rolling Stone magazine. Red Alert is also featured in an exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The only DJ of this era so honored! He has appeared in over 50 music videos.Red was reared by his maternal grandparents, who were from Antiqua. Red's love for those around-the-way basketball games led him to his high school team at DeWitt Clinton. No doubt this is where he was dubbed the nickname, “RED”; for his red hair and alert response on the court. Red later received a college basketball scholarship. During the last of his high school years, Red hung out at the Saturday night parties thrown by Kool Herc and Coke La Rock at clubs throughout the west Bronx. Red studied the style of music Kool Herc played and the way he blended the vinyl. On Fridays, Red found himself venturing downtown to check out star disco deejays, such as: Grandmaster Flash, Together Brothers, and Pete DJ Jones. It wasn't long before he was jammin' at parties on his own equipment. It was important to be up on what was happening on the New York scene, so Red was now attending legendary parties throughout the Bronx.Red caught Grandmaster Flash at the Back Door and the Dixie Club, Kool DJ A.J. at the Morehouse Center and Afrika Bambaataa at JHS 123. By this time, Red had gathered enough record selection and record spinning insight to teach his cousin DJ Jazzy Jay the basics of the art. Jazzy Jay in turn introduced Red to Bambaataa. Bambaataa taught Red about rock, reggae and new wave music. Learning about the various styles of dance oriented music, Red soon became the deejay for Bambaaata and his Zulu Nation, joining the likes of Afrika Islam, the Soul Sonic Force, Grandmixer DST and the Rock Steady Crew. Through this association, Red began to spin records downtown at such clubs as Negril and Danceteria. While deejaying at the Roxy, he met Barry Mayo, then program director of NY's WRKS 98.7 KISS FM. A man of considerable taste, Mayo hired Red to inaugurate the “Dance Mix Party.” Red remained at 98.7 KISS FM for 11 years, becoming the top DJ at the station. During his tenure at KISS, Red became the first individual to popularize dancehall music at a major radio station! Before you knew it, Red met up with producer Vincent Davis, of the Vintertainment Record label, through DJ Chuck Chillout, to produce Red's First record, “Hip Hop On Wax, Volume 2.” (Part 1 was made by DJ Chuck Chillout of the B-Boys and Part 3 was by DJ Born Supreme Allah).Another record was “He's My DJ (DJ Red Alert Goes Berserk)” which featured Sparky D on vocals and was released on NIA records produced by Spyder D.He also became a member of the Boogie Down Productions, touring the country with KRS One.Since then, Red has done super mixes for compilation albums on Next Plateau Records and Epic Records. Now a seasoned veteran as radio jock, club jock and studio man, Kool DJ Red Alert has established his place as one of the world's premier DJ's. To top it off Red Alert owns a production and management company, Red Alert Productions (RAP). The company garnered a reputation for developing and promoting new talent. RED is responsible for launching the career of such widely acclaimed acts as the Jungle Brothers, Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep and Queen Latifah to name a few.In addition DJ Red Alert was the first to introduce numerous hit records including “Soul II Soul” by Jazzy B and “Hold On” by the group En Vogue!Red says, “You have to learn how to break a new artist on record by working it in and out with familiar records. People are scared to fall. It's OK to fall. You must learn how to fall and be strong so you can come back. A DJ is like the pied piper.”Since his break on the radio, Red Alert has had the opportunity to expand hip hop's audience as well as break the careers of Boogie Down Productions, Black Sheep, the Jungle Brothers, and A Tribe Called Quest. He has had cameos on countless albums, and has also released various compilation albums.Lately he has undergone some professional changes after leaving his radio show. Well all wait to see what he has in store for us next. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
