This weekend we are studying a hymn by Lutheran Pastor, Johnann Mentzer. Like Gerhardt whom we studied last week, Mentzer lived about 100 years after Luther and in a very difficult time, politically and religiously. Like Gerhardt, Mentzer was also familiar with suffering and tragedy. Yet, his faith in the Triune God and the joy which God's work for him instilled, shines through in his hymns. This hymn is no exception. Originally it included 15 stanzas, ten of which are included in our hymnal, but in two different hymns (TLH 30 and 243). This hymn of praise is addressed to the Triune God (this is why it is found in the Trinity section of our hymnal), which can be seen in the reference to the Father (verse 2), the Savior Jesus (verse 3), and the Holy Spirit (verse 5). The words of this hymn are based in part on Jesus' words to the demonic, Legion after He delivered the man from the oppression of those evil spirits: “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” Then we hear the man's joyful response: "And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him" (Luke 8:39). This hymn highlights the blessings which God has richly bestowed on us. He is our Creator and Preserver who is our "Guardian kind and tender." He is our Redeemer whose compassion led Him to come "down to ransom me" and "brought me from bondage" though the suffering (keenest woe) He endured on our behalf. He is our Sanctifier, Who gives "me among Thy saints a place" through the faith He works in our hearts, and gives us the power to live lives of good works to His glory. All of this moves the Christian, the one who has come to know God's love which is shown in all these ways, to "be filled with gladness" even in the face of trouble and trial in this life. Join us this weekend as we sing our praises to the Triune God for all the great things He has done for me! May the LORD bless your joyful worship this weekend!
In this episode, we reflect on Allah's divine name: Al-Hafiz (The Preserver). Discover how Allah safeguards His creation and protects His servants through His infinite wisdom and power. Through the story of Prophet Shu'ayb (A.S), we explore how Allah preserved the believers amidst corruption and hostility, upholding justice and truth. This reflection inspires us to trust in Allah's preservation and to seek His protection in all aspects of our lives.
Beyond Rules: The Heart Behind the CommandmentsA deeper look at what it truly means to follow the sixth, seventh, and eighth commandmentsWhen we think about biblical figures like David—a man who killed someone, stole another man's wife, and committed adultery "all in one fell swoop"—we might find ourselves feeling pretty good by comparison. After all, most of us haven't done anything nearly that scandalous. And yet, David is called "a man after God's own heart" in Acts 13:22. How is this possible?Jesus Reframes the CommandmentsIn Matthew 5, Jesus challenges our self-righteousness by digging deeper into what these commandments really require of us:* You may not have murdered anyone—but have you been consumed with anger toward someone? That murderous heart attitude is there, just restrained by consequences and laws.* You may not have committed adultery—but have you lusted after someone in your heart? Have you tried to get others to desire you? Our social media culture thrives on this exact dynamic.* You may not have stolen anything—but are you discontent with what you have? Do you believe God hasn't given you enough? The Invitation Within the CommandmentsWhen we look at Exodus 20:13-15 (the sixth, seventh, and eighth commandments), we discover that these aren't just prohibitions—they're invitations to a better way of living. They call us to:* Protect (not murder)* Promise (not commit adultery)* Preserve (not steal)Be a Protector of LifeThe command against murder isn't just about not killing—it's about being someone who values and protects human life. It asks: Are you the kind of person others feel safe around? Do people trust you and feel secure in your presence?Be a Promise KeeperThe command against adultery goes beyond avoiding infidelity—it's about keeping your word. Marriage is a covenant relationship, a promise to remain faithful "despite what happens to us, despite what happens to me." This commandment asks: Are you trustworthy? Do you have integrity?Be a PreserverThe command against stealing isn't just about respecting others' property—it's about preserving and valuing what you already have. Do you appreciate what God has given you? Are you a good steward of your own possessions?Finding Freedom in ChristSo how do we live up to these high standards? By looking to Jesus. On the cross, Jesus became the victim of all these sins:* He was killed (sixth commandment)* He was betrayed by those who belonged to him (seventh commandment)* He had his honor stolen (eighth commandment)Yet in that same moment, he took our place—the place of murderers, adulterers, and thieves. He died between two thieves, one of whom recognized his own guilt and Jesus' innocence. This is what David understood in Psalm 51 when he cried out, "Against you, you only, have I sinned." David wasn't a man after God's own heart because he was perfect, but because he understood his need for forgiveness and turned to God in repentance. It's Not About Trying HarderKeeping these commandments has never been about trying harder. It's always been about looking to Christ—the true Protector, Promise Keeper, and Preserver. When we see that he took our place on the cross and that God raised him from the dead, we begin to change. This rallying-cry is drawn from Moses' question to Israel when sin was rampant among the people, and the sermon is preached shortly after a general election when men had been choosing a side. Spurgeon uses the political and social climate to impress upon our souls spiritual truth. After drawing attention to the character of Moses, Spurgeon looks at the question and command which issues from him, in terms of decision, avowal, and consecration. He elevates it to the very question of salvation and extends it to every consequent decision which a believer makes in the service of Christ. With characteristic intensity, the preacher calls for an entire commitment to the Lord based on our relationship to him as our Creator, Redeemer, and Preserver, and applies it closely to his own society, and—by extension—to ours, asking about our modes of worship, our casual superstitions, our sinful amusements, and our general tampering with principle. As so often, we are called to repentance and to correction, stirred and drawn by the King whom we serve and the matters which are at stake. Check out the new From the Heart of Spurgeon Book! This special 30-part series delves into the divine attributes of God Almighty, exploring their significance and relevance in our lives. Through these discussions, we seek to answer fundamental questions: Who is our God? How can we recognize Him? And how do we strengthen our connection with Him through an understanding of His attributes? In today's episode, we focus on the attribute Al-Hafiz (The Preserver). With the insights of an esteemed guest, we will explore the depth of this characteristic, its impact on our spiritual journey, and its manifestation in our daily lives.
Article 2: GODThere is one and only one living and true God. He is an intelligent, spiritual, and personal Being, the Creator, Redeemer, Preserver, and Ruler of the universe. God is infinite in holiness and all other perfections. God is all powerful and all knowing; and His perfect knowledge extends to all things, past, present, and future, including the future decisions of His free creatures. To Him we owe the highest love, reverence, and obedience. The eternal triune God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence, or being.A. God the FatherGod as Father reigns with providential care over His universe, His creatures, and the flow of the stream of human history according to the purposes of His grace. He is all powerful, all knowing, all loving, and all wise. God is Father in truth to those who become children of God through faith in Jesus Christ. He is fatherly in His attitude toward all men.B. God the SonChrist is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Jesus perfectly revealed and did the will of God, taking upon Himself human nature with its demands and necessities and identifying Himself completely with mankind yet without sin. He honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and in His substitutionary death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of men from sin. He was raised from the dead with a glorified body and appeared to His disciples as the person who was with them before His crucifixion. He ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where He is the One Mediator, fully God, fully man, in whose Person is effected the reconciliation between God and man. He will return in power and glory to judge the world and to consummate His redemptive mission. He now dwells in all believers as the living and ever present Lord. C. God the Holy SpiritThe Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, fully divine. He inspired holy men of old to write the Scriptures. Through illumination He enables men to understand truth. He exalts Christ. He convicts men of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. He calls men to the Saviour, and effects regeneration. At the moment of regeneration He baptizes every believer into the Body of Christ. He cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, and bestows the spiritual gifts by which they serve God through His church. He seals the believer unto the day of final redemption. His presence in the Christian is the guarantee that God will bring the believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ. He enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service.
Jesus prepared His inner circle for the climax of His story -- something momentous was on the way. The book of Matthew records His instructions, as He explained how to best weather life's dangers, including the impending storm of His own betrayal and crucifixion. His words weren't only relevant to His disciples; the strategies He taught can help us in times of crisis. Tuesday, September 24 marks the second anniversary of post-tropical storm Fiona's landfall on the southwest coast of Newfoundland. The storm caused devastation and heartbreak for residents there. Mark Lomond lost his family's fishing stage, and five houses owned by members of his family were destroyed. Lomond eventually salvaged a keepsake from the storm that will be part of an exhibit in New York on Tuesday. The exhibit is being held to coincide with the United Nations General Assembly and High-Level Week, which brings together world leaders to address global challenges. Bernice spoke with Lomond and with Conor Curtis of the Sierra Club, which put the exhibit together.

They explore how they use the Enneagram and the instinctual biases in their work and how it applies to branding. Using examples of different brands–from phones to coffee–they show how the instinctual biases can engage with their potential audience, revealing what they're offering and the domain it appealing to.“You have to understand what is the instinctual bias message of my brand. Day 254 Today's Reading: Revelation 16 One of the scariest movies I have ever seen was not in a theater but in a church. It was called A Thief in the Night, and it was circulating in the 1970s about the end times. I knew I wanted to be ready for the rapture, the second coming of Jesus. I remember leaving that church service as an elementary student knowing full well in my heart that I needed to be ready for that day. I went on to read Hal Lindsey's Late Great Planet Earth. At that time, they had it in a comic book form, and it was the clincher for me that I was going to be ready for Jesus to come back as a thief in the night. If things could get any worse for earth and humanity, Revelation 16 tells us it does in the great tribulation. As if seven trumpets of disaster were not enough for the planet, God unleashes seven bowls of wrath into the earth, from bodily affliction to polluting rivers and water. What's interesting is that in the midst of these wrathful bowls of God's judgment, one theme keeps being shouted by the angels inflicting the punishment: “Righteous art Thou O Holy One.” Their words remind us that God is not doing anything we don't deserve—this is a day of wrath and judgment after millennia of mercy and patience. These bowls are terrifying, as is men's response to the outpouring of God's wrath. Almost as many times as it says “God is righteous” after one of the bowls is poured out, it says as many times, “They did not repent so as to give Him glory.” How corrupt is man by this time in his history? The chapter ends with a name many of us are all familiar with. As if things can't get any worse, we are introduced to Armageddon, the place of the final battle on the planet. All that to say that in the midst of these horrific verses, a parenthetical statement shows up and stands alone in these passages because the verse speaks to the now and not to the future: “(‘Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.')” (Revelation 16:15). Verse 15 is a parenthetical life preserver for humanity now, right now before this chapter comes upon the planet with the wrath of God. When I say parenthetical, it's just a large word for parentheses, an insert of another thought, a little path from the original thought. But this is not a little diversion. This is deliverance from the wrath of God. It is as if John breaks from the vision and, in terror of what will happen, says to humanity, This doesn't have to happen to you. Stay awake and ready for the rapture. The parentheses show us John being overwhelmed and wanting to help us all. The parentheses bring us to the rapture, the second coming of Jesus. The apostle John says that Jesus will come like a thief in the night, but this is not only John's description of the second coming of Jesus. Jesus says in Matthew 24 that this is the way it happens. In 1 Thessalonians 5:2, Paul uses the thief-in-the-night image. And in 2 Peter 3:10, Peter also says He will come like a thief. The thief-in-the-night day is the rapture. The rapture is Jesus coming physically a second time to the earth, not to redeem it but to start judging it. The rapture has two important days attached to it: the wedding day and the judgment day. The wedding day is the celebration of the “born again” dead and living all going to heaven. It's the final call, our reward of heaven. And the Bible calls it a wedding-day celebration. The second day is judgment day, and it is God making all wrongs right. No one gets away with anything because of this day. Every person will be judged for what they have done. Hitler and Saddam Hussein will be there. Stalin and Castro. People from your city and my city and every pl

The reading of this week's lesson.
Psalm 3 is a lament written by David during the time he fled from his son Absalom. The psalm begins with the exclamation, “O LORD, how many are my foes!” We may not be facing an uprising, but we are likely facing something…or a lot of somethings.
