The city produced several notable soul music artists - including Tyrone Harris, Jimmy Lynch, and Sonny Charles of Checkmates Ltd., who scored a top 20 hit in 1969 with the song "Black Pearl". During the 1970s Fort Wayne was home to BET Records, an independent label that issued several cult-classic singles.

Later pressings were credited to "Sonny Charles & The Checkmates," and then subsequent releases by the group were simply by "The Checkmates." The B side is a non-album track. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage A&M Records factory sleeve. The labels have been subject to light storage wear, with a little ink smearing in one spot, grading a strong EX. The vinyl (styrene) looks almost untouched, however, and the audio is pristine Mint. (This scan is a representative image from our archives.)

In retrospect, the Checkmates Las Vegas Lounge Act heritage should have translated to the biggest stages of all. They were one of the first integrated acts of their period creating a sense of inclusion during a time of 60's turmoil.

We begin with the BackTrack Blues Band. Out of the Tampa, FL area, this is the fifth album from this 5-piece band. I’ll chat with Sonny Charles about his journey, how the band came to be and where they are heading in the future while we listen to songs from Way Back Home. Then three Couch Kid New Music Segments with holiday gift ideas. First, Frank Bang returns to The Couch with his new album, Don’t Care.  Frank has put together a new band, The Cook County Kings, and his sound has grown.  We’ll talk about what he has been up to the last couple of years. The Corey Lueck from the Smoke Wagon Blues Band returns to talk about their new album, Cigar Store.  Always fun when Corey takes a seat and we’ll explore the band’s development and the new songs on the album.
