Alex talks about cooking in a French kitchen, on television and for a special someone (i.e., how to make a seduction dinner.) She finds her faith in beautiful ingredients and her restaurant family. The Inside TrackThe Guys talk to Alex about the not-so-secret sauce that makes “Chopped” so enjoyable for the judges, guests and audience.“It's the feedback we would give each other in the restaurant. I think it didn't bring the restaurant to the show, but it brought that culture. That pirate that just got off the Black Pearl. I had my parakeet and my eye patch and I'm ready to tell you why your spaghetti sucks! I think that really resonates with people. I feel like the audience could feel that we wanted to tell the truth,” Alex Guarnaschelli on The Restaurant Guys Podcast 2025BioAlex Guarnaschelli began her international culinary journey at Michelin three-star restaurant Guy Savoy in Paris. Kristin Hersh of THROWING MUSES joins Rain Phoenix on LaunchLeft for a raw, unfiltered conversation about artistic integrity and the music industry's dark underbelly. Kristin reflects on her journey in the music industry, discussing her experiences with major labels and her commitment to making music that feels true to her. She shares insights into her creative process, including her approach to songwriting and production. The conversation touches on themes of authenticity, the spiritual aspects of music, and the challenges of maintaining artistic vision in a commercial industry. Kristin Hersh then launches Wallace False, who offers his unique perspective on creating original music and art. The episode provides a fascinating look into two generations of musicians who prioritize creative expression over commercial success, offering listeners a glimpse into the world of independent and experimental music-making. IN THIS EPISODE: (00:00) Intro: Kristin Hersh joins LaunchLeft podcast (05:58) The music industry's focus on image over art (13:18) Spirituality and channeling in music creation (19:39) Exploring unconventional sounds and instruments (25:49) Leaving major labels to pursue artistic vision (32:28) Kristin on producing her own music and incorporating nature sounds (38:32) Streaming's impact on musical exploration (48:50) Wallace False is launched (53:54) Creating original sounds from basic waveforms (59:18) Finding inspiration beyond audience expectations (60:00) Wallace False's new industrial soundscape album: Signal KEY TAKEAWAYS: Kristin has always prioritized authenticity in her music, choosing to leave major labels to maintain artistic integrity and her creative process. She believes that music is about capturing a visceral truth, not conforming to industry standards of prettiness or marketability. It's about nurturing the energetic essence of a song and letting it resonate with listeners who appreciate its rawness. Kristin strives for originality and control through her creative process. By manipulating raw sounds to craft unique compositions and avoiding conventional influences, she aims to create something entirely its own. It's important not to become complacent in any artistic lane, but to explore and experiment, allowing inspiration to guide the way. Music has a spiritual component that goes beyond just sound. It's about being a vessel for inspiration, channeling something greater than oneself. Kristin and Wyatt create music that resonates with truth, rejecting superficial standards and focusing on the deeper connection it can foster with those who truly listen. The Queen of Grunge's first band, Throwing Muses, began recording and playing out when they were just 14 years old and they're still going. 2020's critically acclaimed Sun Racket was hailed as a "perfect record." Hersh's refusal to participate in a corporate industry saw her leave a Warner Brothers recording contract at the top of her success in order to become listener-supported. "Music is humanist and so are we," as she puts it. Wildly prolific, she has released more than 20 albums - solo, with Throwing Muses, and her noise rock band 50 Foot Wave ("A group that runs laps around most rock bands" said Pitchfork, on 2022's Black Pearl). She's also a celebrated author: Rolling Stone named her first book, Rat Girl (Penguin) one of the ten best rock memoirs of all time. NPR said of her second book, Don't Suck, Don't Die, "Not only one of the best books of the year, but one of the most beautiful rock memoirs ever written." Her third book, the game-changing Seeing Sideways, pushes the envelope of creative non-fiction while telling the story of raising her 4 sons on a tour bus. Hersh lives in New Orleans and New England. WALLACE FALSE: Wyatt True, sometimes known as Wallace False, is a writer, animator, and musician. True was born in Rhode Island and raised just about everywhere else. He now resides in the Deep South. The common thread in True's work is a grotesque dismantling of any and all familiar structures. Guitars twang sour, sorrowful sonatas, protagonists are lost amongst melting walls and rooms that time forgot. He is mostly docile and will only bite if cornered. The court shivers its timbers this week when Richard Blakemore (“Enemies of All: The Rise and Fall of the Golden Age of Piracy”) swabs the poop deck with the 2003 adventure “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” *** Prosecutor: Richard Blakemore. Defense: Big Ben Haslar. Judge: The Honorable Maynard Bangs. Jurors: Maynard Bangs, Ryan Luis Rodriguez, Dylan J. Schlender. *** Advisory: Silvana Carranza. Prologue: Kirk R. Thatcher. Original Theme: WT Golden. What did you think of the verdict?
This week, we're busting out the slammer and potentially wishing we were back in it depending on who you ask, as we team up with the canary-clad copper to take down a star-studded mob in a wildly stylish and outlandishly conceived blockbuster starring a charming old man incapable of doing action scenes, that's been seemingly buried in the Disney vault in the years since. It's 1990's Dick Tracy, directed and produced by Warren Beatty, and starring Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Sorvino, James Caan, Kathy Bates and Catherine O'Hara. Most of these stars are unrecognizeable under the monstrous makeup required to make them look like their vintage crime comic strip counterparts, but Pacino made enough of an impression with a wildly comedic take on his typical mobster persona that he netted an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor, losing to Joe Pesci for GoodFellas. While Beatty is at least a decade too old to be proper fit as the movie's lead, it's his ambition behind the camera that makes the movie such a curiosity all these years later, as the film is either an enchanting dreamscape filled with unsolvable How Did They Do That movie magic puzzles, or a steaming pile of neon-drenched puke depending on which of our two hosts you ask. But that's okay, as we have some heated disagreement this week that is maybe the closest we've yet come to vintage Siskel & Ebert kinda stuff. Plus: We've both been to the theater and are happy to sound off on Ryan Coogler's latest as JMo and Hayley both greatly enjoyed Sinners in the cinema, and Justin's got a bonus theatrical field report on Drop, the latest from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. If you'd like to watch Dick Tracy before listening along to our conversation, good luck finding a physical copy, and Disney will seemingly never stream this thing on Disney+ -- possibly for rights reasons to avoid paying anything more to Warren Beatty, or possibly because they are cowards who are ashamed of the fun movie they made. Either way, it's tough to find outside of renting it on YouTube. Other works discussed in this episode include Creed, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Mad Max: Fury Road, Loki, The Accountant, The Perfect Storm, Bridge of Spies, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, Red Eye, Trap, Reign of Fire, Surrogates, The Expendables 2, The Last Boy Scout, Princess Mononoke, Hook, This Is The Tom Green Documentary, Cutthroat Island, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, G20, The Silence of the Lambs, Longlegs, Resident Orca, Avatar: The Way of Water, Blackfish, Batman ('89), Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, X-Men, Blade, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Darkman, Speed Racer, Furiosa, Challengers and Sin City, among others. We'll be back (more than likely) next week, with another special in-theaters spectacular, as 100+ episodes after we covered the original film, it is tax season once again and we're back for more Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2. So look for that next Friday, and until then we'll see you at the movies!!

Black Russian Terrier: "The Black Pearl of Russia" [caption id="attachment_13770" align="alignright" width="354"] Emily Fagan showing one of her Black Russian Terriers.[/caption] Host Laura Reeves is joined by Emily Fagan, breeder of Black Russian Terriers, for a Love the Breeds episode talking about the “big black fluffy bearded beasts” that have become her “spirit animal.” “Like they are the Black Pearl of Russia and they really are like the hidden gem. Most people, they see them and they're like, ohh, boy, that's kind of this big black scary kind of looking dog. And they're so stoic and regal in public and then they come home and they're absolute goofballs, complete clowns,” Fagan said. “A short background history that Stalin basically was jealous of the Germans, you know, and their wonderful police military dogs. So he's like, you know what, I'm gonna make a superior breed of dog for military and police work. He got a bunch of scientists, geneticists together and actually started developing the Black Russian Terrier. The four main contributors are the Rottweiler, the giant Schnauzer, the Newfoundland and the Airedale Terrier. So there's the terrier. But they are very much NOT a terrier.” [caption id="attachment_13768" align="alignleft" width="389"] Black Russian Terrier training for "bite work" competition.[/caption] The breed was utilized by the KGB, and still is today by its successor agency, the FSB, as well as being used in the Russian prison system. It's job, Fagan said, was to terrify people. And they're very good at their job. The best owners of BRTs are not first-time dog owners, Fagan said. She added that structure and very defined rules are critical. “You do need to be fair because they are very smart,” Fagan noted. “This is not an old school, put the dog on its back. You can't do that. Absolutely not. You would ruin your relationship with this breed because it's built on trust too. You have to build respect. So a person who understands a structured environment is really going to thrive.”

This week, three stories about connection: connection to the land and the sea, connection to history, connection to the divine and to ourselves. Weaving Ancestral Voices by Shareeka Helaluddin In our first story, Shareeka reconnects to faith and identity through the voice of the singer Sheila Chandra. Growing up in an interfaith household, Shareeka was immersed in a diverse sonic landscape of Islamic recitations, Hindu chants, Bollywood, folk, and Western music. It wasn’t until Sheila Chandra’s drone-based singing resonated deeply within her that she found solace in voice. “Songs that weave through past and present, a voice that pierces through discordance and uncertainty. An immersive journey of glossolalia and spiritual vocal gateways, reckoning with - and returning to - faith; all bound together by the voice of Sheila Chandra.” This story was produced by Shareeka Helaluddin. The Supervising Producer was Mell Chun, with support from John Tjhia. The artwork was provided by Rekha Dhanaram who can be found @rekha.dhanaram on instagram. The story features the voices of Aarti Jadu and Sheila Chandra, on instagram @thesheilachandra. Our next two stories are recordings from the Red Dirt Poetry Festival, an annual showcase of spoken word and poetry from Mparntwe, Central Australia. Black Pearl of the Desert by Marie Ellis In the first story, Marie takes us into the very heart of the desert. The Black Pearl’s coming - timeless and untamed. Red Dirt by Melanie Mununngurr In the second story, Melanie confronts colonial violence, systemic oppression, and cultural erasure. Through the enduring strength of saltwater people and the unbroken connection between land, water, and ancestry, we celebrate the resilience and defiant song of those who refuse to be forgotten. The water remembers all—carrying echoes of ancestors, the weight of sorrow, and the rhythm of survival. Black Pearl of the Desrt and Red Dirt were performed and recorded at the Red Dirt Poetry Festival, a celebration of spoken word and poetry from Mpartnwe, Central Australia. Travel back in time and sail with the most roughest, toughest people around and then there is Jack Sparrow... I mean Captain Jack Sparrow. Its been a long time coming but we finally find this medallion in the sea of films.
[School of Movies 2025] An extremely long-awaited show on a game-changer of a blockbuster movie. The first Pirates film, released in 2003 before Lord of the Rings had completed brought the world many things: A fantabulous extravaganza of practical effects, combined with a surprisingly light smattering of digital VFX that would be leaned into a lot harder later down the line, The notion that the swashbuckler could still do big business (the hidden caveat was that Johnny Depp being strange absolutely must be present) Keira Knightley as a leading lady, Gore Verbinski as a major director, the supposition that audiences would flock to cinematic adaptations of Disney park rides (they won't, just this one. See above regarding Johnny Depp) and Geoffrey Rush as an all-time iconic big-screen presence embodying the most consistently enjoyable pirate of all time. But there's more going on, beneath the frothing surface, a fantastically witty, urbane and efficient script by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott, one of the greatest scores ever composed (in a shockingly short amount of time) and Orlando Bloom's character actually being quite good, especially when held against Jack Davenport's Lawful Neutral Commodore James Norrington. This was a commission for Lincoln Alpern and features clips from the best audiodrama I've ever composed; Panther Soul, and the first chapter of the brand new Dracula adaptation Castle of the Moon. Hello and welcome listeners to Episode 12 of JwaC Presents Depp Dive: A Depper Look into Johnny's Feature Filmography. Your host David Garrett Jr. is joined by his Co-Captain and wife, Jaime. For this episode, we don't have a brief movie for the introduction so this is a double feature. This features two films that we've both seen multiple times, but it had been some time since the last watches. First up is a biopic of Blow (2001). Then it is paired with a film that cemented Depp's legacy with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). I hope you enjoy coming on this journey through Johnny's Feature Filmography. [School of Movies 2024] A story ripped straight from the pages of Golden Age comic books, as dastardly gangsters and Nazis on the rise seek out a secret rocket pack that has fallen into the hands of a well-meaning, square-jawed chap who accidentally becomes something of a superhero. Starring a moustache-twirling Timothy Dalton, a luminous Jennifer Connelly, along with Billy Campbell, Alan Arkin and Paul Sorvino, this is a favourite of many of our listeners and was commissioned by Sarah Montgomery. We kick off a Christmas season of commissions, and considering how stressful November was for everyone, we have decided to set the tone for 2025 by seeking out pure joy. They will be movies we will love talking about enthusiastically, and focusing on to bring you folks a measure of weekly happiness in a dark time. The ones we have chosen for this December all seem to have that joy in common, as well as an old fashioned sensibility. We have A Christmas Story coming up next week, then Ultraman Rising, then at New Year's we have The Mask, and to see in January it's Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a 2006 American fantasy swashbuckler film directed by Gore Verbinski, written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), it is the second installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. Set one year after the events of The Curse of the Black Pearl, the film recounts Captain Jack Sparrow owing a debt to Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), the ghastly captain of the Flying Dutchman, and being marked for death and pursued by the Kraken. Meanwhile, the wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) is interrupted by Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander), who wants Turner to acquire Jack's magic compass in a bid to find the Dead Man's Chest.. http://www.attractionchecklist.com - It's time to set sail on a journey around the Rivers of America aboard Disneyland's Sailing Ship Columbia on this episode of Attraction Checklist! Attraction audio recorded on September 30, 2023. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we head to Frontierland in Disneyland to ride Sailing Ship Columbia. The Disneyland website describes this attraction saying: Sail into the wilderness aboard a full-scale replica of a majestic ship from the 18th century. There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and the Thrill Level describes it as being a Slow Water Ride that can get Loud. Before we embark on our journey, here are five fast facts about the Sailing Ship Columbia. 1. The Sailing Ship Columbia opened at Disneyland park on June 14, 1958. 2. The story goes that in the early days of Disneyland, Walt Disney wanted more traffic on the Rivers of America. He asked Joe Fowler to come up with an idea for a new ship and, after research, Fowler suggested the Columbia Rediviva - The first American vessel to circumnavigate the globe. 3. The original designs for the ship were sketched out on a napkin by Ray Wallace. The masts, rigging, spars and sails of the Columbia were constructed at Todd Shipyards, Los Angeles Division, San Pedro, CA 4. The Columbia can hold up to 300 guests on each 12 minute trip around Tom Sawyer's Island. 5. The Columbia has a starring role in the nighttime spectacular Fantastic! Serving as Captain Hook's ship, the Jolly Roger, in the original and current incarnations of the show and as The Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean in the version that ran from 2017 to 2023. Let's set sail on the Sailing Ship Columbia. John B. deHaas is joining me again today and after we ride, we'll give you our thoughts on this attraction. There's arguably no better time for falling down a cultural rabbit hole than the languid, transitory summer months. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss how the season allows us to foster a particular relationship with a work of art—whether it's the soundtrack to a summer fling or a book that helps make sense of a new locale. Listeners divulge the texts that have consumed them over the years, and the hosts share their own formative obsessions, recalling how Brandy's 1998 album, “Never Say Never,” defined a first experience at camp, and how a love of Jim Morrison's music resulted in a teen-age pilgrimage to see his grave in Paris. But how do we square our past obsessions with our tastes and identities today? “Whatever we quote, whatever we make reference to, on so many levels is who we are,” Cunningham says. “It seems, to me, so precious.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Heathers” (1988)“Pump Up the Volume” (1990)The poetry of Sergei YeseninThe poetry of Alexander PushkinGoldenEye 007 (1997)“Elvis” (2022)“Jailhouse Rock” (1957)“Pride & Prejudice” (2005)The Neapolitan Novels, by Elena Ferrante“Ramble On,” by Led Zeppelin“Never Say Never,” by Brandy“The Boy Is Mine,” by Brandy and Monica“The End,” by The Doors“The Last Waltz” (1978)“The Witches of Eastwick,” by John Updike“Atlas Shrugged,” by Ayn Rand“Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” (2003)“Postcards from the Edge” (1990)“Rent” (1996)New episodes drop every Thursday.
