In 2022, Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian actress to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. But she wasn't the first actress of Asian origin to be nominated. In 1935, Merle Oberon was nominated for Best Actress for the role of Kitty Vane in The Dark Angel, only her second film in the U.S. film industry. But no one knew Oberon was Asian. Her public biography said she was born to white parents in Tasmania, eventually moving to India and, from there, to the UK. But Merle Oberon, in truth, was of Anglo-Indian origin, born in Bombay. She'd hidden her heritage to get around U.S. censorship and immigration laws—a secret she took to her grave, even if many in the industry suspected the truth. Mayukh Sen tackles Oberon's life in Love, Queenie: Merle Oberon, Hollywood's First South Asian Star (W.W. Norton: 2025). Mayukh Sen is the James Beard Award-winning author of Taste Makers: Seven Immigrant Women Who Revolutionized Food in America (W.W. Norton: 2021). When a young mother experiences a severe asthma attack during a quiet fall evening, she finds herself in a desperate race against time to survive. Struggling to breathe, crying out in pain, and praying for help as her fiancé rushes to get her medication, something—or someone—appears in her bedroom. Not a guardian angel, not the Grim Reaper... but a silent, shadow-like figure with wings, watching without judgment or intent. Was this the Angel of Death? Or something else—an ancient, neutral observer of the dying process, present not to take her life, but to witness the moment it might have ended? Then it's on to the news rant and this week I'm rounding up the latest singles by Thronum Vrondor, Dark Angel, Baest, Gaahl's Wyrd, Necrophobic, Sodom and others for judgement.  I also comment on the recent attempt to cancel Glenn Danzig, Metallica appearing ever-so-smug on the teaser to their latest documentary, and I answer more of your questions.   PLUS: a premiere on the sphere courtesy of Australian war metal brigade, Deathorde. In 1936, Merle Oberon became the first Asian woman–and person of color–to receive an Oscar nomination for best actress. She was nominated for her role in The Dark Angel and later starred in films like Wuthering Heights. But Oberon kept her mixed-race, South Asian heritage a secret, passing as white for her entire career. Mayukh Sen tells this story in Love, Queenie, the first biography of Oberon. In today's episode, Sen speaks with Here & Now's Deepa Fernandes about prejudice the actress faced during her upbringing in India, the role men played in her career, and the elaborate stories she told to keep her identity a secret. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Returning friend of the show Comrade Yui swings by to discuss the 1994 Full Moon direct-to-video masterwork Dark Angel: The Ascent. The story follows the exploits of a bored, beautiful young demon Veronica Iscariot (Angela Featherstone) as she defies the orders of her parents and the rules of hell to visit Earth and walk among the humans. It's not long before she realizes that humanity has forsaken its God-given gifts and descended into all manners of evil, which must be brutally punished. Written by Freeway director Matthew Bright and directed by Linda Hassani (her sole feature directorial effort), the film defies all expectations of the DTV format with an unusually rich premise, emotional depth, and style to spare. We begin with a discussion of the film's unique theology, offering a vision of Heaven and Hell working in concert to do the bidding of the Almighty. Then, we explore how Bright's script searingly antagonizes many of society's ills, especially those germane and topical to the mid-90s - anti-welfare rhetoric, police brutality, antisexualism. Then, we uncover the film's depthful look at the notion of fallenness, and how its characters perceive of complacency and disregard for evil as tantamount to evil itself.   Follow Comrade Yui on Twitter.Get access to all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

Gather round, kids - we've got a heartwarming story for you about a Christmas long ago (1990) in a magical place called “Houston” where a detective on a mission encounters an alien with an arm-mounted drain snake to create space heroin to take back to his planet. There is also a gang called the White Boys (really!) who dress like finance bros who want to get their hands on that sweet, sweet space heroin too. And as a bonus, the alien has a killer flying CD attack. It's a lot to process, so sit back and let your uncles Matt, Scott and Kyle tell you all about DARK ANGEL, aka I COME IN PEACE! In the words of whoever greenlit this insane concept, “let it snow, let it snow, let it snow” and we don't mean the stuff that falls from the sky when it's cold. Learn more about your ad choices. As November approaches, two near opposites clash for the nation's highest office. It's Ven Hess, firebrand populist breaking all the old rules, known as "The Hessian" for his intimidating tactics on the pitcher's mound, versus Democrat Alec Maynard, an African American Admiral with his own flaws but who offers the nation at least some hope of normalcy. Pete Vankov, a political operative known as the "Dark Angel" because of his reputation for winning at all costs, spearheads the Hess campaign. Meanwhile, an estranged colleague, David Gruber, together with The Globe's political reporter, Jane Berglund, devises a plan to thwart Vankov's march towards a dirty and dangerous victory. Who wins? With Guile, veteran political strategist Craig Snyder has written a thriller exposing the dark underbelly of American politics, a novel rich in suspense and intrigue that will have readers turning its pages quickly in rueful anticipation of the next election.

Take a trip through the puzzle of porta-potties at a free-range event, highway happenings, and the new news about prep. This is deeper than “What is MOOP?” This is the ART of Leaving No Trace. It's part of the Burning Man ethos, and it's why Black Rock City is the world's largest Leave No Trace event. Now nearly 100 other Burning Man events around the globe adhere to this attitude, this mindset. It's an ongoing quest to leave less and less of a trace. As the principle is written, it invites us to leave spaces in better shape than we found them. The 75,000 citizens of BRC pick up after themselves. It's miraculous. And we can do more. Those of us who take on the challenge, we see it as a process, a practice, a stretch goal. We look at ways to get closer to that zero point. Each of us is at a different point on the LNT learning curve. The next level is to develop techniques to do it collectively. It is a set of behaviors to be cultivated. In this episode, we talk with some of the unsung heroes: blue: DPW Logistics & Project Manager of Recycle CampBarbarella: Resto's Highway Clean-Up ManagerDA: Playa Restoration ManagerHazmatt: Associate Director of BRC Business OperationsWe look at what gets left behind, so we can grok our cumulative impact, and make a better choice, a better cascade of choices, to teach good citizenship. Plus, eh, there may be a few poop jokes. There's an old saying in Black Rock City: “It was better next year.” Let's leave no trace so that there will be a next year.burningman.org/about/10-principlesRecycle Camp2023 MOOP MapDA on Restoration Destiny (Burning Man LIVE) LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG

“I was a theater kid, so I started out writing plays,” says David Zabel. “But I started to think, what does a movie script look like or what does a play look like? Once I had access to those things to see how they worked, I started writing screenplays and had ideas for TV pilots. That pilot opened a few doors of me.” An agent helped him get his first job on the series JAG, which later led to Star Trek: Voyager, Dark Angel, and ER. “It came out of my love for drama and dramatic theory. All of this came for his love to tell stories to live audiences. “That relationship between being a writer, how it's performed, and how it's perceived — where it worked, where it didn't work — I consider that as one of my stronger points as a writer, which is writing for actors.” Working with so many live performances, he started to see where actors needed less lines to portray the same emotions on stage and later in film and television. “If they understand what you're trying to convey, it's better to do it with the greatest economy of language that you can apply.” The same was true in the editing bay. “It's humbling,” he jokes. This economy of language certainly relates to the latest series created by Zabel, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. The spinoff series stars Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon, where he was arguably the most stoic character on the series. “It was an interesting challenge,” he jokes about the stoic character who is also now in a land where he doesn't speak the language. “I felt like that was a classic American character. This laconic hero, the man without a name that you see a lot in Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, or Gary Cooper and people like that.” “I was excited for that kind of storytelling that wasn't so expository. Norman, as an actor, relishes the idea of living in a world without speechifying. That's how he wants to play drama. The challenge is to put people around him who have stories that are compelling, that draw him into their story. He's not looking to get into other people's lives and he's not talking, so people have to be irresistible to him, for him to resonate with them. He's the reluctant hero but he's got a heart that makes him hard to walk away.” As for actors who have been playing characters over a long period of time (about 13 years for Norman Reedus), Zabel says, “You have to lean into the knowledge that they have. It was also true on ER and other shows I've done. We learn each other's rhythms and it becomes symbiotic. That's one of the joys of television, to dance that dance together.” Want more?
