The crew dives back into their fan-favorite “Drifting on a Budget” role-playing game, where each person picks a car off Facebook Marketplace and tries to survive a full season of drifting on a fixed $17,500 budget. With Johnny and Eddie joining in, the team debates car choices, negotiates imaginary deals, and plans repairs and upgrades while preparing for events like Opening Moves, East Coast Bash, and Drifters of December. It's chaotic, funny, and full of drifting-nerd strategy as they try not to blow their entire budget before the season even starts. Be sure to leave us a review if you are enjoying this podcast! Peter Wolf is a man with a million stories to tell. Thankfully he put many of them in his memoir, Waiting on the Moon: Artists, Poets, Drifters, Grifters, and Goddesses, released in March 2025 on Little, Brown and Company. In the hard-to-put-downWaiting on the Moon, Wolf is tells of his relationships and exploits with the likes of Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, the Rolling Stones, Sly Stone and Merle Haggard. Wolf is best known as the frontman for the J. Geils Band. Their 1980 album Love Stinks reached No. 18 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and the title track went to No. 38 on the Hot 100. The big breakthrough came in 1981 with the album Freeze-Frame, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The title track hit No. 4 on the Hot 100, and the single “Centerfold” spent six weeks atop the Hot 100 in 1982.  Wolf left the Geils band in 1983 over creative differences. The band released one more album in 1984, and Wolf released his first solo album, Lights Out, in 1984, which rose to No. 24 on the Billboard 200. That album featured such guests as Mick Jagger, Elliot Easton of the Cars, G.E. Smith and Ed Stadium.  His latest and eighth solo album, A Cure for Loneliness, came out in 2016.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We kick off Season 11 with the question: “what have we learned so far?” Our listeners chimed in with their comments and Christopher and Tom expound on lessons both sublime and absurd. Then, we get to the good stuff, with an incredible lost 1993 interview with Paul McCartney that was only discovered in the Famous Lost Words archives a few weeks ago! Paul talks about how he chooses what songs to play in concert, how The Beatles would hash out songs in the studio, plus his dedication to vegetarianism and environmental causes. It’s an excellent chat with Paul and interviewer Dale Smith, a Beatles fan who is totally in his element. Then, Tom & Christopher share some Cool Song Facts about the Beatles post breakup. This is when things were getting pretty ugly between the Fab Four. Nevertheless, there are touching moments too, like when Paul helped out George during his final weeks. And we end things off with a tribute to the R&B vocal groups from the early days of rock and roll. Ben E. King talks about his days with The Drifters, Leon Hughes reflects on the hitmaking days of The Coasters, and in a rare audio clip, Frankie Lymon talks about his music career. Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2016 conversation with Mike Stoller. ABOUT MIKE STOLLERMike Stoller has written more than 60 songs that have appeared on the Billboard charts, including the #1 hits “Hound Dog,” “Kansas City,” “Yakety Yak,”  “Searchin',” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Poison Ivy,” “Stand By Me,” “Young Blood,” “Don't,” and “Ruby, Baby." After Stoller and songwriting partner Jerry Leiber found early R&B success with recordings by Little Esther, Charles Brown, Ray Charles, and Big Mama Thornton, Elvis Presley turned their song "Hound Dog" into a #1 single on the pop, R&B, and country charts in 1956. Elvis went on to record more than 20 Leiber and Stoller titles, including the hits "Love Me," "Loving You," "Jailhouse Rock," "Treat Me Nice," "She's Not You," and "Bossa Nova Baby." Mike and Jerry signed an independent production deal with Atlantic Records in the mid-1950s, where they wrote and produced a series of hits for several artists, including the Drifters' "There Goes My Baby," "Dance With Me," and "On Broadway." Additionally, the pair wrote and produced all the Coasters' singles, including "Young Blood," "Searchin'," "Charlie Brown," "Along Came Jones," and "Poison Ivy." Other highlights from the Leiber and Stoller songbook include "Love Potion No. 9," which was a hit for both the Clovers and the Searchers, and "Is That All There Is," which was a hit for Peggy Lee. Eleven different versions of their song “Stand By Me” appeared on the Billboard charts over the span of 50 years, with the original version by Ben E. King hitting the Top 10 in both 1961 and 1986. Smokey Joe's Cafe, which included 40 Leiber and Stoller songs, opened in 1995 and became the longest running musical revue in Broadway history. Stoller received the prestigious ASCAP Founders Award in 1991, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and is a member of both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Around the same time, Dan Williams moved to Denver from Austin, Texas, and both he and Dady happened to land a job as arborists for the same company. As they talked, they realized they shared a similar interest in music, both performing occasionally in local open mics on their own time. Getting to know each other more, they started performing together through open mics and jams among friends, sharing their music tastes with each other.Their chemistry continued to develop as they kept performing together. Around 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the two decided to look for other musicians to flesh out their sound and book more gigs. By the end of 2020, the group had acquired an upright bass player, a fiddle player, and a dobro player, booking gig opportunities in Denver.Since 2021, the band, now named Cottonwood Drifters, has cycled through various lineups to find a group of people who could share their artistic talents individually while also working towards common goals together.Dady and Williams are the consistent core members and songwriters, with Dady playing acoustic guitar, Williams playing mandolin (which he learned online during COVID) and occasionally Irish tenor banjo, and both singing lead vocals. What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2025 34:48

Many mark the start of the singer-songwriter genre to have begun when Carole King released her second studio album, the iconic Tapestry. As would be expected from a singer-songwriter, all of the songs on the album were either written or co-written by King.  Tapestry is considered one of the greatest albums of all time in the soft rock genre.Born Carol Joan Klein in Manhattan, King began piano lessons at four years of age.  Her upbringing included friendship with Paul Simon and dating Neil Sedaka.  In the 50's at the age of 17 she met and married Jerry Goffin with whom she would team up on songwriting through the 60's - King writing the music and Goffin writing the lyrics.  They had several successful songs during the 60's including "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (The Monkees), "I'm Into Something Good" (Herman's Hermits), and "Up On the Roof" (the Drifters).  King and Goffin divorced by 1968, and King moved to Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles to re-start her recording career.Tapestry features both new and old songs of Carole King's catalog.  Several new friends from the Laurel Canyon area appear on the album, including James Taylor and Joni Mitchell.  Fellow songwriter Toni Stern co-wrote two of the songs, including the hit "It's Too Late."The album was a hit, spending 313 weeks on the Billboard Charts (second only to "Dark Side of the Moon" in time on the chart).  It also was a critical success, taking the Grammy for Album of the Year at the 1972 Grammy awards.  King announced her retirement from music in May 2012, but has done a few things since then, including a live performance of Tapestry in Hyde Park in 2016.  Friend of the show Greg Lyon sits in for Wayne while Bruce presents this soft rock album for this week's podcast.TapestryThe title track to the album is a look back on life as a colorful combination of threads woven into a picture or pattern, but not one intended to last.  This is a deeper cut which was not released as a single.Where You LeadSeveral songs became hits for other artists while the album was still on the charts, including this one.  Barbara Streisand recorded this song for her 1971 album, and it reached number 40.  The song takes its inspiration from the book of Ruth in the Bible.  It was also the theme song for the television series "Gilmore Girls."  Toni Stern collaborated with King to write this song.  You've Got a FriendThis is another song which became a hit for another artist.  James Taylor did this on his 1971 album, "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon," making it to number 1 on the US charts.  The two albums were being produced concurrently, and Taylor, Joni Mitchell, and Danny Kortchmar perform on both King's version and on Taylor's version.  King has said the song is a response to the line in James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" which says "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend."  So Far AwayJames Taylor is on acoustic guitar for this piece, and King is on piano.  It went to number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was on the charts in September 1971.  It starts with a focus on the physical distance between lovers, then moves on to emotional distance.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the serial Danger Island (from the television series “The Banana Splits Adventure Hour”) This live action 10-minute adventure short appeared as a part of "The Banana Splits Adventure Hour," which concluded this month. STAFF PICKS:Ain't No Sunshine by Bill WithersLynch leads off the staff picks with Withers' breakthrough single from his debut album, "Just As I Am."  The inspiration for this song was the 1962 film "Days of Wine and Roses," which portrays two characters who were alcoholics.  The idea is that someone may not be right for you, but you miss them regardless.  Signs by Five Man Electrical Band"And the sign said 'long haired freaky people need not apply!"  Rob brings us a signature song from a Canadian band.  The song originally appeared as a B-side to a less successful song called "Hello Melinda Goodbye," but became successful on its own.  Frontman Les Emerson wrote this song after seeing so many billboards in Los Angeles which obscured the natural scenery.Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get by The DramaticsGreg features the title song from the debut album of R&B group The Dramatics.  This song contrasting the fakeness of people with the authenticity of the singer went to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 3 on the R&B chart.  It fuses a Motown feel with a Latin undertone.Thin Line Between Love and Hate by The PersuadersBruce brings us a cautionary tale about a guy who comes home late at night, finding his girl smiling and ready to cook him some dinner.  He learns his lesson when he wakes up in the hospital, beaten to within an inch of his life.  This song by a New York R&B group made it to number 15 on the US charts.  INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Rock by Atomic RoosterWe close out with an instrumental from a British rock band originally co-formed by prog rock organist Vincent Crane and percussionist Carl Palmer. "Face Of 68" The Connecticut-born Peter Holsapple isn't hiding his age--his new album Face Of 68 proudly blares it in its title and though the 68 is representative of his current chronology, like our old friend Billy Bragg, he knows that number is a temporary thing and another waits in front of it. So, to honor this moment in his life, Holsapple's third solo album is a celebration of a year in a man's life and it couldn't sound more life-affirming. The d.B.'s frontman, whose output with that beloved outfit include classics like Stand For Decibels and Like This remain timeless classics, is one of music's busiest characters. Here's a quick and partial glance at his rock and roll resume': In the late-'80s, he was a full-time fifth member of R.E.M., He was an auxillary member of Hootie and the Blowfish for nearly 30 years, he was in the indie pop supergroup the Continental Drifters with members of The Bangles, The Dream Syndicate and The Cowsills, and he's currently playing with The Paranoid Style, the reformed d.B.'s and solo shows on his own. Holsapple's Face Of 68 is one of 2025's very best; a smoldering batch of songs that are filled with jangle, shimmer and stomp, Holsapple and his power trio of Robert Sledge of the Ben Folds Five and Rob Ladd of The Connells, play with confidence and nerve. This is a dynamic album with heavy grooves, pop hooks and melodic muscle and the fact of the matter is The Face Of 68 has never sounded better. www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) Stereo Embers: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com) IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast
