Tom Hambridge is a Grammy Award-winning drummer, songwriter, and producer whose fingerprints are all over modern blues and rock music. Known for his powerhouse drumming, soulful songwriting, and Grammy-winning production work, Hambridge has built an extraordinary career that bridges the worlds of stage and studio — working alongside some of the biggest legends in American music.Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Tom began playing drums at the age of five, showing an instinctive sense of rhythm that would shape his life. He studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he honed his craft not only as a drummer but also as a singer, songwriter, and producer. Before becoming one of Nashville's most in-demand producers, Hambridge led his own band, Tom Hambridge & The Rattlesnakes, building a devoted following for his high-energy live shows and original songs that blended blues, rock, and Americana influences.Hambridge's reputation as a go-to songwriter and producer skyrocketed when he began collaborating with blues icon Buddy Guy. Their creative partnership produced a string of critically acclaimed albums, including Skin Deep, Living Proof, and The Blues Don't Lie. These records not only revitalized Guy's career but also earned multiple Grammy Awards and Blues Music Awards, cementing Hambridge's place as one of the leading producers in contemporary blues.Beyond Buddy Guy, Tom has written and produced for an impressive roster of legendary artists, including Susan Tedeschi, George Thorogood, Joe Bonamassa, James Cotton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, and Johnny Winter. His songs have been covered and recorded by icons across genres, from rock to country, demonstrating his remarkable versatility and storytelling gift. While his songwriting and production credits are extensive, Tom Hambridge's drumming credentials are equally impressive. He has toured and recorded with artists such as Delbert McClinton, Boston, and Chuck Berry, always delivering his signature mix of groove, drive, and precision. Whether behind the kit in the studio or on stage at major festivals, Hambridge's playing exudes both heart and technical mastery. As a solo artist, Tom has released several acclaimed albums that showcase his gritty vocals and songwriting depth. Today, Tom Hambridge stands as one of the most respected figures in modern blues and roots music. With multiple Grammys, dozens of producer credits, and a reputation for elevating every artist he works with, Hambridge's influence reaches far beyond the studio. Whether producing chart-topping albums, writing soulful hits, or performing his own electrifying shows, he continues to shape the sound of contemporary American music — one song, one beat, and one record at a time. What's Inside This EpisodeTom Hambridge's early years, musical upbringing, and path to BerkleeHow he built his career before writing for major artistsThe rise of Tom Hambridge & The Rattlesnakes and his early solo workHis game-changing songwriting and production partnership with Buddy GuyThe major artists he has written for and produced, from Joe Bonamassa to Susan TedeschiThe legendary musicians he has drummed for on stage and in the studioA look at his acclaimed solo albums including Boom!, The NOLA Sessions, and Blues Don't CareHow Hambridge helped shape the modern blues soundHis ongoing influence as a drummer, songwriter, and Grammy-winning producerFor further information on Tom head to his website: http://hambridgetunes.com/With comments or suggestions head to my website: https:www.abreathoffreshair.com.au

It's been one of those weeks where the blues feels especially right — a little late getting this one out, but trust us, it's worth the wait. The new episode of Blues is the Truth, hosted by Ian McHugh and proudly sponsored by the Tuesday Night Blues Jam at the Rising Sun, Isleworth, takes you deep into the heart of the music we love. This week, we journey from the smoky Chicago clubs of Hounddog Taylor and the Houserockers to the modern soul of Tedeschi Trucks Band and Vanessa Collier. Along the way you'll hear legends and rising stars side by side — Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duke Robillard, Doug MacLeod, and Dave Weld and the Imperial Flames all take their turn in the spotlight. But there's more than just big names. There's the raw, heartfelt playing of Hubert Dorigatti and Roly Platt, the pure energy of the Paul Cook Blues Band featuring Katie Bradley, the groove-laden sound of Mumbo Jumbo, and the always inspired work from Zoe Schwarz, Rob Koral and Friends. Add to that Pierre Lacoque's Mississippi Heat, Boy Green, Bon Temps Rouler Sessions, and The Steady Rollin' Revue — and you've got a show that runs from the deep roots of the blues to its ever-evolving present. There's gig news, the regular features you love, and a little bit of that late-night magic that only the blues can bring.
Josh King joins me on episode 145.Josh hails from Charlotte, North Carolina, and picked up his first harmonica at just six years old.By the time he was eight, he'd found an incredible mentor in the legendary James Cotton, after boldly sneaking into Cotton's dressing room at a show. That chance encounter turned into a lasting mentorship, with Josh joining Cotton on stage numerous times during his teens. In 2025, Josh brought his talents to a national audience as a contestant on American Idol. While the spotlight was on his singing and piano playing, it was the harmonica that gave Josh his distinctive edge.Today, he continues to create and perform new music, keeping the harmonica right at the heart of his sound.Links:Josh's website: https://www.joshkingmusic.com/Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/OfficialJoshKingVideos:House of the Rising Sun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgiGWD9cOWIPlaying Hoochie Coochie Man with James Cotton age 10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blBAqb_jyn0Rolling In The Deep on American Idol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-3dWlkR7q0Hopelessly on American Idol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=np8YhQM6kjk&list=RDnp8YhQM6kjk&start_radio=1Playing with Buddy Guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcV04BKOdc0Playing with Tommy Emmanuel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G353LZWD52ESinging US national anthem in 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FCLnN1384YSupport the show

In this episode of 'Seeing Them Live,' Charles and Doug explore the intersection of True Crime and Rock and Roll with guest Jim Berkenstadt, also known as the Rock and Roll Detective. Berkenstadt has a worldwide reputation for uncovering the hidden histories and mysteries within popular music. His exhaustive investigative works span from serving as a historical consultant on several high-profile documentaries to publishing award-winning books that delve into the enigmatic corners of rock history. Berkenstadt recounts his initial foray into rock investigation during eighth grade when he explored the 'Paul is Dead' conspiracy surrounding Paul McCartney. This early experience sparked his lifelong passion for becoming a rock detective, leading to a prolific career that has seen him solving many mysteries in the music world involving elements of True Crime. Jim shares stories about attending memorable concerts, including a terrifying but exhilarating Wings concert in 1976 where pyrotechnics blew him and his friend off their chairs. He also recalls sneaking into a sold-out George Harrison concert and the emotional tribute concert for George Harrison organized by Eric Clapton.Berkenstadt discusses his book 'Mysteries in the Music: Case Closed,' which tackles complex topics such as the FBI's extensive and somewhat absurd investigation into alleged obscene lyrics in the song 'Louie Louie,' the CIA's possible involvement in Bob Marley's death, and the Beach Boys' interactions with Charles Manson.Additionally, Berkenstadt's book 'The Beatle Who Vanished' narrates the incredible yet true story of Jimmy Nichol, a drummer who substituted for Ringo Starr during a Beatles tour, only to mysteriously disappear from the public eye. The discussion also covers Berkenstadt's involvement in music documentaries like 'George Harrison: Living in the Material World' and his upcoming work on Nirvana's Nevermind album. Through a combination of rock legends, government intrigue, True Crime, and lost histories, Jim Berkenstadt brings to life the dramatic and captivating interplay of True Crime and rock and roll.BANDS: Billy Preston, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Foo Fighters, Garbage, Green Day, Jeff Lynne, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Muddy Waters, Nirvana, Ravi Shankar, Ringo Starr, Smashing Pumpkins, The Beatles, The Euphorics, The Quarry Men, The Rainbows, The Rolling Stones, The Spotnicks, The Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty, Traffic, Wings.VENUES: Chicago Stadium, Edgewater Hotel, Royal Albert Hall, Soldier Field, Sunset Marquee, The Checkerboard Lounge. In this episode of Poducer, we sit down with Vincenzo Zino B and Jimmy Box — producers, engineers, and co-founders of Channel Recording Company, a brand-new Chicago studio designed to feel like a living room while sounding world-class. They share the story of transforming a raw warehouse into a fully treated space in Fort Knox Studios, complete with cedar diffusion walls, a 25×25 ft live room, and a glass-walled ISO booth big enough for a grand piano. We dive into their philosophy of hospitality-driven engineering, why “good sound should be the default,” and how creating a comfortable environment frees artists to focus on making their best music. Beyond the technical build, Zino B and Jimmy reflect on their paths through the Chicago scene — from Joyride sessions with legends like Buddy Guy to Grammy-nominated projects, to building a community hub where artistry, collaboration, and care come first. They also tackle big topics like AI in music, the importance of “first listeners” in mastering, and how true fans sustain independent art.
Blues music means different things to different people. The popular image is of a guitarist playing 12-bar blues of the 1-4-5 variety singing about his or her troubled life. This doesn't take into consideration songs of lust, politics, travel or any subject really that doesn't involve the traditional 12 bar form. The songs can be downcast, yes, but also happy and celebratory. They can have the guitar as the focus instrument, but also the harp (not the type that the Marx brothers employed....but I'd be happy to be proven wrong), the piano, horns....they can be simple, complex, slick or raw. Welcome to episode 188 of Love That Album podcast. Over the last few years, I've welcomed Shane Pacey, leader of the Bondi Cigars and the Shane Pacey Trio to the show many times to talk about records in a variety of styles, but weirdly, we've never spoken about The Blues. I say “weirdly” because blues music is his main focus of recording and live performance. Finally, that is rectified with the latest episode. Shane and I picked 4 classic blues albums to ruminate on. They're all very different in their approach to performance and production, yet they all fit nicely under the blues umbrella. We look at: Willie Dixon - I Am The Blues Albert King – Born Under a Bad Sign Junior Wells – Hoodoo Man Blues Muddy Waters – Hard Again Of course, it wouldn't be an LTA episode if we didn't digress to other blues-related topics....and we're remaining consistent to that ethos. As always, it's a wonderful time in Shane's company. We discuss much, and I learn much. He's a music encyclopedia and a fun conversationalist. So, if you want to know who we believe Junior Wells influenced and was influenced by or what song by Albert King influenced Kiss (probably) or why Marshall Chess supposedly asked Buddy Guy to kick his arse....we have a great show for you. Shane's trio's most recent album is the superb Who Made You King? You can get a copy from https://shanepaceytriomusic.bandcamp.com/album/who-made-you-king. You can also look up what's happening in the world of The Bondi Cigars at https://bondicigars.com/ Oh, and I even received some feedback from listeners about THEIR favourite blues albums. Yay!!! Tom Hambridge joins me on the show this week. Tom is a Nashville-based drummer, but also an incredibly successful songwriter and producer. Mostly known over the past couple of decades as Buddy Guy's producer and key songwriter, Tom has had a huge hand in everything the blues legend has released since 2008's “Skin Deep”. Their partnership has earned them multiple Grammy nominations, and they have toured the world many times over. Tom is a solo artist in his own right, releasing 8 albums under his own name over the last 30 years. Aside from his stellar work with Buddy Guy, Tom has fascinating stories about working with artists like Roy Buchanan, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley while he was a top-call bandleader around the Boston area. His other production credits include records for Susan Tedeschi, George Thorogood, Joe Louis Walker, Chris “Kingfish” Ingram and many more.Tom's latest projects and tour dates can all be found at hambridgetunes.comEnjoy my conversation with Tom Hambridge! This season is brought to you by our main sponsors Larivée Guitars, Audeze, Izotope, FabFilter, and Chase Bliss. This week in the Flamingo Lounge I sat down with visual artist, Jeff Garbaz, on August 7, 2025 to get a behind-the-scenes viewpoint. Jeff Garbaz has been directing videos and photography for the last 20 years in the entertainment business. He has made a name for himself in the industry by directing video screens in a live atmosphere and has worked all over the world. Some of the venues where he has directed video include Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, Roseland Theater in New York City, the Hard Rock in Vegas, and the Masters golf tournament in Augusta. He has also directed tours all over California, the West Coast, and the East Coast. Jeff has worked with over 100 Grammy Award winners in many different genres, including artists such as Crosby, Stills and Nash; B.B. King; Weezer; Buddy Guy; Bonnie Raitt; Doc Watson; Lou Reed; and David Sanborn. He is also one of Carl Palmer's (of Emerson, Lake and Palmer) video directors. Jeff began his career as the singer and songwriter for a band out of Buffalo called “Last Lemming.” After performing on most of the prominent stages in Buffalo, New York, and touring in places like New York City, Jeff moved from being on stage to photographing and doing portraits for other bands. Jeff's photography has been featured in newspapers and magazines, such as The Buffalo News, in over 100 issues.

A musician of many talents, James, is an iconic figure in blues music for over 40 years, is an accomplished blues harpist, singer, front man and bandleader, lending these talents to his own band, The James Montgomery Band, and to countless sessions and tours over the years with the likes of Gregg Allman, Johnny Winter, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, James Brown and so many others it would take two pages to list them all. He's also hosted his own syndicated blues radio show, interviewing, and playing the music of numerous blues and blues-rock luminaries. This man has stories to tell!James was inducted in 2018 into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame and into the New England Music Hall of Fame in September 2021.He was also nominated for a Grammy for his outstanding harmonica playing on Johnny Winter's I'm a Bluesman album, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2004 in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category.James is also the co-producer and one of the driving forces of a recently released, critically acclaimed documentary on blues harp legend James Cotton entitled Bonnie Blue: James Cotton's Life in the Blues. Buddy Guy's high-energy, crowd-strolling performances set the bar for every electric blues and blues rock guitarist who came after him. And that includes Jimi Hendrix. Buddy changed the game and left an indelible mark on the sound of electric guitar playing. He's still out there, delivering incendiary performances to stages all over.On this episode, we're talking about one of the last blues guitar showmen, whose polka dot signature Strat caught both of our eyes. Where's the best place to start? And where did Buddy get all that energy?
