This week in the Flamingo Lounge I sat down with visual artist, Jeff Garbaz, on August 7, 2025 to get a behind-the-scenes viewpoint. Jeff Garbaz has been directing videos and photography for the last 20 years in the entertainment business. He has made a name for himself in the industry by directing video screens in a live atmosphere and has worked all over the world. Some of the venues where he has directed video include Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, Roseland Theater in New York City, the Hard Rock in Vegas, and the Masters golf tournament in Augusta. He has also directed tours all over California, the West Coast, and the East Coast. Jeff has worked with over 100 Grammy Award winners in many different genres, including artists such as Crosby, Stills and Nash; B.B. King; Weezer; Buddy Guy; Bonnie Raitt; Doc Watson; Lou Reed; and David Sanborn. He is also one of Carl Palmer's (of Emerson, Lake and Palmer) video directors. Jeff began his career as the singer and songwriter for a band out of Buffalo called “Last Lemming.” After performing on most of the prominent stages in Buffalo, New York, and touring in places like New York City, Jeff moved from being on stage to photographing and doing portraits for other bands. Jeff's photography has been featured in newspapers and magazines, such as The Buffalo News, in over 100 issues.
Blues is the Truth – Episode 766 This week's episode of Blues is the Truth is a rich tapestry of legends, modern voices, and heartfelt farewells. Sponsored by the Tuesday Night Blues Jam at the Rising Sun in Isleworth, it blends deep grooves with emotional resonance and classic fire. Host Ian McHugh presents a set full of soulful power, from the swampy swagger of The 251s to the guitar mastery of Steve Howe. There's classic blues-rock from Derek and the Dominos, while Andres Roots and Keb'Mo' keep the contemporary flame alive. Emma Wilson and The Terraplanes Blues Band bring UK blues passion, Delaney and Bonnie add soulful chemistry, and Giles Robson & The Dirty Aces light the strings on fire. Deepening the mix, Taj Mahal taps into foundational roots, and Johnny Iguana brings his inventive piano energy. A historic collaboration between Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton delivers electric resonance, while Maria Muldaur drips soul. The exotic tones of Vintage 18, the bluesy grit of Sheryl Youngblood, and the grooves of Andrew Duncanson, Big Mamas Door, and Breezy Rodio keep things lively and varied. Adding a nostalgic twist, George Harrison brings his folk-blues warmth, Brother Buffalo adds fresh acoustic poignancy, and Rory Block serves finger-picked storytelling. Tommy Castro and the Painkillers fuel modern energy, followed by the deep resonance of Muddy Waters and the refined vocality of Robert Cray. We also pay homage to Bobby Whitlock, whose music—and life—passed this week. Whitlock's influence, particularly through his songwriting and keys in Derek and the Dominos, helped shape the blues-rock lexicon. His passing is felt across the landscape we celebrate each episode. This one's a soulful journey through blues past, present, and future—full of heart, history, and fire.

A musician of many talents, James, is an iconic figure in blues music for over 40 years, is an accomplished blues harpist, singer, front man and bandleader, lending these talents to his own band, The James Montgomery Band, and to countless sessions and tours over the years with the likes of Gregg Allman, Johnny Winter, B.B. He's also hosted his own syndicated blues radio show, interviewing, and playing the music of numerous blues and blues-rock luminaries. This man has stories to tell!James was inducted in 2018 into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame and into the New England Music Hall of Fame in September 2021.He was also nominated for a Grammy for his outstanding harmonica playing on Johnny Winter's I'm a Bluesman album, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2004 in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category.James is also the co-producer and one of the driving forces of a recently released, critically acclaimed documentary on blues harp legend James Cotton entitled Bonnie Blue: James Cotton's Life in the Blues. Buddy Guy's high-energy, crowd-strolling performances set the bar for every electric blues and blues rock guitarist who came after him. And that includes Jimi Hendrix. Buddy changed the game and left an indelible mark on the sound of electric guitar playing. He's still out there, delivering incendiary performances to stages all over.On this episode, we're talking about one of the last blues guitar showmen, whose polka dot signature Strat caught both of our eyes. Where's the best place to start? And where did Buddy get all that energy? Send us a textJoin Cheryl Lee - That Radio Chick on STILL ROCKIN' IT for news, reviews, music and interviews with some of our favourite Australian musicianEver wondered what happens when skilled musicians throw away the sheet music and just play? Step into the world of Blues Roulette with Jimi "The Human" Hocking, guitarist for the Screaming Jets and internationally acclaimed blues artist.Blues Roulette isn't your typical performance—it's musical improvisation at its finest. Founded by bassist Ben Wicks at Melbourne's Catfish venue, these shows feature a rhythm section backing guest artists with absolutely no rehearsal. "There's no charts, it's just get in and play," explains Jimi, whose relief was visible during his first performance when he realized the backing musicians could truly play.Jimmi shares his remarkable journey as a blues musician parallel to his rock career with the Screaming Jets. In 2005, he became only the second non-American to win the prestigious Memphis International Blues Challenge—an extraordinary achievement considering hundreds of acts from around the world compete annually. Most fascinating is that all three non-American winners in the competition's history have been Australian, highlighting our country's unexpected prowess in this traditionally American art form.Beyond technical proficiency, Jimi's approach to blues balances traditional elements with humor. "I like to write from a fun aspect," he says, comparing his style to Buddy Guy's more upbeat take on potentially gloomy subject matter. The Blues Roulette recordings capture these genuine moments—including musicians learning songs on the fly—preserving the raw, authentic spirit of true blues jamming. For blues enthusiasts or anyone seeking an unfiltered musical experience, Blues Roulette delivers something increasingly rare: skilled musicians taking risks together in real-time, creating unique moments that will never be exactly replicated. Check out their performances in Adelaide this weekend or discover their recordings at bluesroulette.com to experience this special musical phenomenon for yourself. What has Jimi Hocking and Blues Roulette been up to lately? Video of a harness racer, who was dragged face down for metres by her bolting horse, has gone viral with the footage viewed more than 1.5 million times. Crystal Hackett had just won a race at Alexandra Park on Friday night driving pacer Buddy Guy, when he got spooked and up-ended the sulky, the two wheeled cart behind the horse, tipping Crystal onto the ground. She held onto the reins, fearing if she let go the horse would hurt himself or another racer, and was dragged at speed across rough terrain before managing to bring him to a stop. Crystal Hackett spoke to Lisa Owen.

Con música de The Beatles, Route 49 (interpretando a Buddy Guy), y Coheed and Cambria. Próximo programa: Magic Knight Rayearth (Parte I).
Mike and Kenny review and spot faith reflected in the latest film from writer / director Ryan Coogler which stars Michael B. Jordon in dual roles as Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" Moore, twin brothers returning from a mysterious time Chicago to their Mississippi Delta home town to start again. Set in the 1930's "Smoke" and "Stack," flush with cash and mystery on how they made it, seek to start again by opening a Juke Joint for the black community in their town. Amidst the challenges they were expecting such as from the Klan, their biggest threat is supernatural evil. Faith Spotted: The destructive power of temptation and greed, whether for riches, power, influence, or eternal life. Although sin and the brokenness of the world impact all of creation, people have freedom and choose to invite or let sin and unrighteousness into their lives. As taught in Scripture, God offers people the freedom to accept relationship with, and righteousness of, God. Likewise people choose to accept or invite sin/the Devil into their lives, rather than it invading or taking over. Life outside the grace and love of God is not a blessing but a burden that imprisons the body and destroys one's spirit. The film depicts the teaching of Jesus in Matthew 10:28 that one should not fear that which can kill only the body, but fear that which kills the soul. The vampire /Dracula mythology and symbolism that dates back thousands of years depicts the struggle of evil against good. The place and role of music in black culture and the black church.
After a short hiatus, Dylan rejoins Ryan to share their thoughts on Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's smash hit, Sinners.
Have you ever been watching a classic vampire movie like “Fright Night” or “The Lost Boys” and thought, “This is good, but this could be great with two of the guy who played Apollo Creed's kid in those ‘Creed' movies as well as some blues music and a dash of racial commentary!”? Well, put up your black square on Instagram and clutch your George Floyd bobblehead in celebration because a celebration is a comin'! Your reason for celebrating is the movie “Sinners” from director Ryan Coogler. He directed the Black Panther movies and the first two Creed movies and sinks his teeth into the vampire genre with his latest movie. No “Wakanda Forever” in this. More like “Live Forever” in this southern-fried take on vampire movies. Coogler's favorite leading man, Michael B. Jordan plays both Smoke and Stacks (Get it. Smokestack!), identical twins who've made a name and some money in the criminal game. Now they're coming home back down south from Chicago to open up their own juke joint for dancing, drinking and gambling. Their own little taste of Vegas in the Deep South. Along the way they pick up their younger cousin, Preacher Boy Sammie, who is very talented with a guitar and a blues voice from the heavens. He's played by the impressive Miles Caton. Before long, some vampires show up to try to make the good times last forever but in a blood-sucking evil way and the movie goes from bluesy crime drama to stakes in the heart and burning vampires. Is it worth your time at the theater? Check out this episode to find out! “Sinners” also stars Delroy Lindo, Jack O'Connell, Hailee Steinfeld, Yao, Saul Williams and Omar Miller. HAPPY 400TH EPISODE - Thanks to all listeners and subscribers for your continued support!!! :)Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) are twin brothers who also are both recent World War I veterans and Chicago gangsters. It's 1932 and they have now returned to their home town in the MIssissippi Delta to start their own juke joint. They find the right spot and recruiter plenty of friends and family to get involved including their cousin Sammie (Miles Caton) who plays a mean guitar and Smoke's ex-wife Annie (Wunmi Mosaku) who cooks some great catfish. They gather various talent and kick off what looks like a promising night of blues music and merry......though there appear to be some unexpected visitors who come calling lead by Remmick (Jack O' Connell) and needless to say, these guys seem to be thirsty....though not for what you would expect. :o And what results is one wild, CRAZY night....not every one is likely to survive that night either! Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, and Jayme Lawson are also part of this extended cast in this raucous horror musical (?) from Oscar-nominated director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed).
