Gary Moore – "Still Got The Blues"

Von Hard Rock zum Blues – Gary Moores Neuanfang mit "Still Got The Blues (For You)" Mit "Still Got The Blues (For You)" schlug Gary Moore eine neue musikalische Richtung ein – weg vom Hard Rock, hin zum Blues. Still Got The Blues (For You)" aufzunehmen. King. Zudem wirkte George Harrison an "That Kind Of Woman" mit. "Still Got The Blues" – Ein Meilenstein der Musikgeschichte Was hat George Harrison mit "Still Got The Blues" zu tun? __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Still Got The Blues" wird im Podcast gesprochen (03:49) – "Texas Strut"(16:02) – "Still Got The Blues (For You)"(35:57) – "Moving On"(41:07) – "Oh, Pretty Woman "(49:42) – "King Of The Blues"(1:04:03) – "That Kind Of Woman"__________ Über diese Songs wird außerdem im Podcast gesprochen (09:49) – "All Your Love" von Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton(28:11) – "Dana" von Roland Kovac(29:14) – "Nordrach" von Jud's Gallery(34:44) – "Still In Love With You" von Thin Lizzy(41:08) – "Pretty Woman" von Roy Orbison(41:45) – "Oh, Pretty Woman" von Albert King  (53:57) – "Broken Heart" von B.B. What the Riff?!?

It's not every day that we at What the Riff?!? review a rap album, but the Beastie Boys aren't your every day rap group either.  Hailing from New York City, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, Adam “MCA” Yauch, and Michael “Mike D” Diamond came out of an experimental hardcore punk band (think “punk” but faster) called The Young Aborigines.  After changing their name to the Beastie Boys, they saw some local success from a comedy hip hop single based on a prank call to a Carvel Ice Cream franchise.  They then began to incorporate more rap and hip hop into their sets, and ended up connecting with Rick Rubin, who formed Def Jam Recordings with Russell Simmons. Many of their songs were locally distributed, and led to uncomfortable situations when three white guys would show up to perform for a mostly black audience that had heard their music but never saw the group.  Their courage and live performance skills won the audience over.Shortly after supporting Madonna as an opening act on the Virgin Tour in 1985, the band recorded their debut studio and breakthrough album, Licensed to Ill.  It was released by Def Jam and Columbia Records, and became one of Columbia Records' fastest-selling debut records, and had shipped over ten million copies in the United states by 2015.  It was also a critical success, and was selected as one of "The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums."  It was hailed for hits stylized rapping, and its combination of hip hop and punk sensibilities. The Beastie Boys would go on to greater heights of stardom in the mid to late 90's as they moved in a more alternative direction, but this is where it all started.Lynch brings us this illin' record for today's podcast. No Sleep Till BrooklynThe song that opens side 2 is inspired by an exhausting tour, and it chronicles many of the events that wear the band out along with their determination to not rest until they get back home to Brooklyn.  It is often the closing song at their concerts.  It also features a solo guitar riff by Kerry King of the heavy metal band Slayer.  Paul RevereThis song is a fictionalized account of how the Beastie Boys met.  It was inspired by an incident when they encountered Joseph Simmons aka "Run" of Run-D.M.C. in a recording studio.  It features a reversed beat from an 808 drum machine.Hold It Now, Hit ItThis was the first single to be released from the album, and was ranked number 27 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.  The video switches between concert footage, and the band lip synching in front of a fish-eye lens.  Brass MonkeyThis is a later-produced song that takes its name from an alcoholic drink by the Heublein Company.  It samples Wild Sugar's “Bring It Here” in the song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:If I Only Had A Brain by Ray Bolger and Judy Garland (from the motion picture “The Wizard of Oz”)Actor, dancer, and singer Ray Bolger who played the scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz” died in January of 1987. STAFF PICKS:Still In Hollywood by Concrete BlondeWayne kicks off the staff picks with the debut single from American alternative rock group Concrete Blonde's first and self-titled album.  This post-punk sound was bubbling up in the LA street scene at the time, and the lyrics portray a life in Hollywood where the town drags you down.  Right Next Door (Because of Me) by Robert CrayBruce's staff pick is a song off Robert Cray's fifth studio album, “Strong Persuader.” The lyrics chronicle an infidelity breaking up a marriage as told from the man who had an affair with the next door wife.  Cray played with a number of artists, and was at the final concert with Stevie Ray Vaughan before his death in a helicopter crash. Too Hot to Stop by Benjamin OrrRob brings us a solo single from the second vocalist of The Cars.  This keyboard-heavy piece was off Orr's only solo album entitled “The Lace.”  After they released their Greatest Hits album in 1985, The Cars briefly split up to pursue solo projects, and both Orr and Ocasek hit the charts.Land of Confusion by GenesisLynch closes out the staff picks with a rare political track from Genesis that questions global leadership and the threat of nuclear war during the cold war era.  It is famous for its video which uses puppets from Peter Fluck and Roger Law caricaturing political figures of the time, and the band members themselves. COMEDY TRACK:Ronnie's Rap by Ron and the DC CrewRonald Reagan was a hot commodity for comedy in 1987, as this satirical rap shows.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. We visited about his song “12:00 in Texas” which he wrote for his brother whopassed away from a drug overdose, putting the cellphone and going outside.   Grit has forever seeped from the pores of country rocker Will Wesley. He was born a rebellious one, sneaking into bars at 15 to play the blues that pumped through his veins. But today, Wesley follows in the footsteps of artists such as Eric Church and Jason Aldean, more than ready to show off his rock edge as much as his tender, lyrical heart. And despite a career that has already found him touring several countries in Europe and Southeast Asia, performing in venues such as the Switzerland International Country Music Hall of Fame and the Jackson, Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, playing alongside the likes of Alabama, Jason Boland & the Stragglers and Robert Cray, this is somewhat a new beginning for Will Wesley as he finds himself ready to conquer the world.  Check Will out here-- Website: https://www.willwesleymusic.com/ Facebook: Will Wesley Instagram: Willwesleymusic YouTube: @willwesleymusic

It is a pleasure to welcome singer-songwriter and guitarist Danielia Cotton to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.  Danielia is a New York City-based Americana/Roots Rook artist. She grew up nurturing her natural musical gifts in rural Hopewell, New Jersey, where she was one of only a half dozen Black kids in school. After being the first woman in her family to graduate college, she continued to fight against preconceived notions, naming her first full-length studio album, Small White Town, as a nod to her upbringing.  Over the past few decades, Danielia Cotton opened for the likes of Gregg Allman, Bon Jovi, Robert Cray, Robert Randolph, Cristone “Kingfish” Ingram, Derek Trucks Band, and Aimee Mann. In addition, she was named Lilith Fair's Onstage Local Talent Winner, and her music has been heard in television shows and national commercials. The New York Times praised Daniella, stating, “She's a belter who can hold back or work her way up to a gospely blues-rock shout, and in the songs, she writes with her band's brawny guitar riffs, she grapples with the road, salvation, holding on, and letting go.” Daniella's music also received praise from Consequence, Entertainment Tonight, Refinery 29, and Spin.   Her fanbase covers New York, the Jersey Shore, Philadelphia, and parts of the Midwest. She recently performed shows for the 2024 Light of Day Winterfest in Asbury Park.   On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Danielia Cotton spoke about the lessons she learned from opening for Gregg Allman, Bon Jovi, Robert Randolph, and Aimee Mann. On August 25th and 26th, 1990, Alpine Valley Music Festival hosted 2 sold-out shows featuring headliner Eric Clapton, along with special guests, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, and the Robert Cray Band. Both shows played to 40,000 strong, and the second show ended with one of the most legendary collections of guiratists on one stage at the same time, when Clapton was joined on stage by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, Jeff Healy, Buddy Guy, and Stevie's brother, Jimmie Vaughan. The concert turned out to be Stevie Ray's final show, as by the end of the night he would be dead, and the music world left stunned and saddened. What exactly happened on that night? And why, almost 35 years later, do people who witnessed the show still talk about Stevie appearing almost supernatural... as if almost already a ghost? Scott and Mickey discuss one of the most iconic shows in rock music history, its aftermath, and Stevie Ray Vaughan's life, one that ended way too soon, on the side of a ski hill in East Troy, WI. Back in 1980, I recall going to the cinema to see a new film, The Blues Brothers. Music and car chases…..what wasn't there to love? The critics hated it because….ya know….that's what they're paid to do. A few years after initial release, it became THAT cult film that everyone watched – on TV, on video or at late night cinema screenings (in Melbourne, it became an audience participation phenomenon similar to Rocky Horror). The question is how did the film get made? Welcome to episode 115 of See Hear Podcast. Kerry, Tim and I welcomed to the show journalist and author Daniel De Vise. He's written a great new book called “The Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic”. As the title implies, it's not just about the making of the film (although a large part of it is devoted to that subject). Daniel did extensive research to talk about the early lives and characters of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. They were a part of the new North American comedy movement Second City, National Lampoon and Saturday Night (later Saturday Night Live), so he writes much about those institutions. There's talk in the book about Aykroyd's love of blues and how he (and Robert Cray's harmonica player) made Belushi a blues fanatic. There's stories of 70s cinema, addiction, egos, friendship, men in bee costumes, and origin of The Blues Brothers. We were rapt that Daniel came on the show to talk about his book and about the blues, the accusations of racism thrown against the comedians who wanted to bring brilliant blues and soul musicians back to the spotlight, the comedy movement as the new rockstar, how rock musicians started taking themselves too seriously…..and a TON of other things. Yeah, we even talk about The Blues Brothers movie. The environment that led to the film is hugely important and it would be impossible to talk about it without telling the wider story as to how the film got made. Daniel has done a terrific job in doing this. I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation even half as much as we did having it. Growing up in a Harlem tenement perched above a record store, the Anel Sisters spent their Saturday “cleaning days” listening to albums and 45's bought from their chore allowance. Barbara and Lili developed an early love of music from their mother, who exposed them to eclectic playlists' ranging from Afro-Cuban jazz, Sarah Vaughn, Tchaikovsky, to Dizzy Gillespie. A trip to see “The Sound of Music”, inspired Barbara to transpose music from the film on the piano. The twins were encouraged by their grandparents to follow their own artistic paths, Barbara was gifted her first piano, from her grandmother. Lili's grandfather gave her a white toy guitar; dressed to the nines he with would sneak into Mass to hear her sing in choir, a voice he could hear above the others. The sisters took divergent paths. After studying at the Eddie Simon Guitar school and the Shelia Jordan workshop, Lili jumped headfirst into the Greenwich Village music scene and went on to record the first of her nine albums. Barbara graduated with honors from C.C.N.Y with a degree in music and , after seeing the devastating realities from her sisters struggles in the music industry, she chose a career in law enforcement allowing her to compose and create music on her own terms.  Join these master composers, songwriters, and performers as they share their lives, adversities, and challenges overcome, with heart, laughter, and graceful honesty. For more than 30 years, rust belt blues shouter and guitar slinger Larry McCray's greatness has been hiding in plain sight. A native of Magnolia Arkansas, Larry McCray discovered his love of music at a young age through his sister Clara, who introduced him to the guitar and the transformative music of Blues legends like B.B. King. After moving to Michigan at 12, he spent his teen years harnessing his guitar skills, adding rock riffs to the traditional blues style he loved. After high school, he began playing the local circuit, and by the late 80's he attracted the notice of Virgin Records and was signed as the inaugural artist to their blues label Point Blank Records. In 1990, McCray released his critically acclaimed debut album, aptly named — Ambition. A stunning debut, the record was a convincing hybrid of blues, rock, and soul, with McCray combining the interrelated idioms in sizzling fashion. Throughout the 1990's, he continued to help define blues rock, releasing several albums including 1993's Delta Hurricane, and 1998's Born to Play the Blues. After starting his own record label, Magnolia Records, the bluesman remained active throughout the 2000's, releasing 2001's Believe It and Blues Is My Business, 2006's Live on Interstate 75, and his self-titled album "Larry McCray" in 2007. He toured extensively, playing with blues greats like B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Keb' Mo and Joe Bonamassa, and worked with rock legends like the Allman Brothers, Levon Helm, Chris Robinson, Dickie Betts and countless others. Somewhere along the way, though, his path to the top of the blues world was derailed. During the recording process of his latest release, McCray felt "reborn" as he developed a newfound drive and passions for his career. In 2021, McCray released his first original material in nearly 15 years, "Blues Without You," an album that showcases his power as an instrumentalist and a vocalist. The 12-track record, produced by Joe Bonamassa's Keeping the Blues Alive label, garnered McCray even more critical acclaim with Blues Rock Reviews calling it "the record of a lifetime and the best project of his career." Born and raised on the shores of Lake Superior, Phil Anich served as Big Top Chautauqua's Operations Manager for nearly 30 years. A performer for most of his life, in the 1980's along with other local artists he began singing in shows written by Warren Nelson & Betty Ferris about the history of the local Lake Superior region. This group would go on to become Big Top's famed house band the Blue Canvas Orchestra. Every summer since Big Top's founding in 1986, the Blue Canvas Orchestra have continued to write and perform in original shows that have often celebrated the history, environment, and cultures of the local region. Since then, Phil Anich has continued to perform in shows at Big Top including Riding The Wind, Big Top Does The Beatles, Wild Woods & Waters, and most recently In Spite of Ourselves: The Music of John Prine & Nanci Griffith. During the 2022 summer season, Phil Anich performed under the tent with Dale Engquist, Brian Russ, and Mason Pavel, as Phil Anich & Friends opened for legendary country swing band Asleep At The Wheel. This episode features recordings from each artists' August 2022 performances at Big Top Chautauqua.   First broadcast in 1994, Tent Show Radio is a weekly one-hour radio program showcasing the best live recordings from acclaimed music acts and entertainers who grace the Big Top Chautauqua stage each summer in beautiful Bayfield, WI.
