Had Ada Palmer back on – this time to talk about Machiavelli, perhaps the most misunderstood thinker of all time.Machiavelli cut his teeth as a high-level diplomat for Florence, a position from which he got to closely observe the most important rulers in Europe at the time, including the ones who were on the path to destroying his dearly beloved Florence.In 1513 the Medici retook control of Florence and, wrongly suspecting Machiavelli of participating in a coup attempt, fired, tortured, and exiled him.Machiavelli could have left exile and worked for any number of different principalities that would have been eager to make use of his talents.Instead, he decided to rot in the countryside and compile his career's lessons about power, politics, and human nature into a book he dedicated to the very man whose new regime had tortured and exiled him, Lorenzo di Piero de' Medici.But at least the Medici were in a position to use his insights to defend Florence. Machiavelli the patriot did not want any other hands to touch these books, because those hands, armed further with these lessons, might pose an existential danger to Florence.The closest modern analogy, at least as Machiavelli would have seen it, would be Szilard's letter warning FDR about the possibility of a nuclear fission bomb.What were those insights? The World Cup is in the United States this year for the first time since the 1990s, which creates massive opportunities for many sportswear and apparel brands. Perhaps no brands are as heavily invested in the World Cup as Nike and Adidas. Together, they sponsor many of the teams and have rolled out several large-scale campaigns tied to the tournament. On the Glossy Podcast, international reporter Zofia Zwieglinska spoke with Daniel-Yaw Miller, award-winning writer and creator of the bi-weekly SportsVerse newsletter, about these two sportswear giants and their strategies for the World Cup. Miller said the fact that the World Cup is in North America this year has given many brands the license to step up their games. "We haven't seen a World Cup of this scale in many years," Miller said. "It's well-positioned for the biggest companies and brands in the world to make the most of it and justify the case for investing in it. Previous World Cups in Qatar and Russia had their own complications. It's been a while since it was in a location that was home to many huge companies." Already, Nike has rolled out collaborations with many celebrities and brands tied to the World Cup, including with Jacquemus, Palace and Drake. Miller said Nike, under the leadership of CEO Elliot Hill, has been working to regain ground in its soccer division. "In 2024, [Nike] came out with a strategy called Sports Offense, which was based around these five pillars, and one of them is football," Miller said. "We've seen that bear out with how the brand has invested marketing dollars in the lead-up to the World Cup." But Adidas has nostalgia on its side, Miller said, as it's the brand most heavily associated with soccer and dominated the sport for a long time before Nike got involved. The Adidas Samba has been around for decades and recently went through a resurgence just in time for the World Cup. "Adidas has so many legends like David Beckham, various Brazilian superstars from the ‘90s, Italian legends like Alessandro del Piero," Miller said. "And Adidas has done a good job of keeping them all in their universe and under endorsement contracts usually reserved for active athletes. But the people with the most spending power are people who grew up watching these players."

Voy a empezar a llamar a estos capítulos feedloopback, ya que es el feedback de vuelta a vuestro feedback. Arranco con algo que para mí vale su peso en oro: un mail. Sí, un correo electrónico de Daniel Iván Reyes a raíz del episodio 1299 sobre descargas y estadísticas. Ese tipo de mensajes que demuestran que al otro lado del micrófono hay alguien escuchando con atención. También en Telegram, Luis Alberto se definía como “uno de los oyentes web”, que oye, me hizo especial ilusión ya que para eso está la propia plataforma web. El episodio 1300 dedicado a Mónica de la Fuente trajo movimiento en LinkedIn, con la propia Mónica agradeciendo la charla y comentarios de compañeros como Bernat o David Bernad, que prometió escucharlo… y cumplió. Hubo también rescates del pasado, como el comentario de Piero en Spotify en un episodio de hace cinco años sobre bancos de sonidos y foley. Una muestra de que el archivo histórico de un podcast es evergreen y que sigue vivo. Y hablando de técnica, Abraham de Felina Estudio me planteó dudas sobre RSS, vídeo en Spotify y cómo gestionan estos detalles plataformas como YouTube. El capítulo sobre el podcast con IA del Washington Post abrió un debate más allá del que yo mismo planteé inicialmente. Kitsune, Luis y Andrés aportaron contexto sobre Jeff Bezos, despidos y la voracidad de los grandes conglomerados. Waka poetry was all the rage in tenth-century, courtly Japan. Every educated person composed it, emperors and consorts sponsored it, and societal interest in it was at an all-time high. Poets, Patrons, and the Public: Poetry as Cultural Phenomenon in Courtly Japan (Brill, 2025) offers an unprecedentedly broad and vivid portrayal of this season of literary flourishing, revealing the multitude of factors that contributed to it, as well as the social, political, and cultural reasons behind waka's rise.Deftly combining sociological theory and social and intellectual history with insightful readings of a wealth of primary texts—some never before discussed in English—the book is both a history of waka in the Heian period and a study of Heian court society through the lens of waka.
