Read OnlineThe chief priests assembled with the elders and took counsel; then they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him while we were asleep.' And if this gets to the ears of the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” Matthew 28:12–14The Lord of all rose from the grave, conquering sin and death, making it possible for us all to share in His glorious Resurrection! Death had lost. Satan had lost. The corrupt religious leaders had lost. And all those who believed in Jesus now had their eternal hope renewed. Sadly, though, what was the greatest victory ever known for humanity, a victory that opened the doors to eternal glory for all who believe, could not be accepted by the chief priests and elders of the people. They saw to His death, and, now that He had risen, they scrambled to do all they could to hide that truth.Pride is hard to overcome. When a person professes they are right, when in fact they are wrong, and when they are then confronted with their error, the sin of pride will inevitably tempt them to further sin. This is what we see today in this passage from our Gospel. The chief priests and elders were informed by the soldiers that when the women came to the tomb early in the morning, there was a great earthquake, and they saw an angel of the Lord descend from Heaven, roll back the stone, and sit on it. When they saw this, “The guards were shaken with fear of him and became like dead men” (Matthew 28:4). And after they heard the angel tell the women that Jesus had risen, the guards went off to tell the chief priests and elders.After all the miracles and powerful preaching of Jesus, you would think that the chief priests and elders would have believed. But they didn't. And then, after hearing the testimony of these soldiers, you would think they would have fallen on their knees, repented of their hardness of hearts, and come to believe. But they didn't. They doubled down in their sin and added sin upon sin.Some forms of sin can more easily be admitted, especially sins of weakness. When one is weak and falls, it may not be always easy to overcome that sin in the future, but it is easier to acknowledge it as sin when it is caused by human weakness. But a sin of weakness is much different than a sin of obstinate pride. Obstinate pride is not only hard to overcome, it's hard to admit. It's hard to admit our sin when it is based on our obstinacy and pride. As a result, this type of sin often leads to other sins such as ongoing deception, manipulation and anger. This is illustrated by these chief priests and elders. But if you can humble yourself and admit your sin when it comes from your pride, that humility can have a powerful and transformative effect upon your life.Reflect, today, upon these chief priests and elders of the people. Try to ponder their hardness of heart and the sad situation they found themselves in as they attempted to cover up their error and sin. Resolve never to fall into this form of sin yourself. However, if this is a struggle for you, seek humility so that you can be freed of this heavy burden by the grace of the Resurrection of our Lord.My resurrected Lord, You conquered sin and death and brought forth new life for all who believe in You. Give me the grace, dear Jesus, to never allow my sin of pride to keep me from being open to the glorious and transforming action You desire to do in my life. Please give me the gift of humility so that I may always turn from my sin and turn to You. She served as a diplomat and stateswoman in the place of her ill husband, Piero the Gouty, and helped manage affairs for Lorenzo and Giuliano during their premature rise to power. In addition to her stately duties, Lucrezia was also an important patron and an achieved poet. This episode looks at the broader scope of Lucrezia's achievements and positions them against the thriving cultural output that occurred during Lorenzo's reign. Importantly, it appears that Lucrezia was not merely the mother of a cultural giant, but directly influenced major cultural shifts in Florence and helped solidify Medici power for her son.   Looking closely at her sacre storie, particularly the violent story of Judith and Holofernes, we can observe Lucrezia as a participant in both skilled literary production and in the propagation of Medici prestige. Di fatto, da Platone a Ovidio, da Gesù di Nazareth a Boezio, da Tommaso d'Aquino a Dante, il lettore di questo poema in 27 sezioni trova davanti a sé una serie di personaggi e di visioni a cui la poesia contemporanea lo ha da tempo disabituato. Thomas Ruff talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work.Ruff was born in 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach, in what was then West Germany, and has, over five decades, extensively probed the forms and possibilities of photography. Though he is a key figure in the international generation of artists that emerged in the 1980s and experimented with the very nature of the photographic medium and discipline, Ruff has carved out a singular practice. He works in distinct series whose formal characteristics vary enormously, but are underpinned by experimental unorthodoxy, technical curiosity and conceptual rigour. Each new group contributes to a profound philosophical exploration of the photographic image and what it means to make a picture. But while the intellectual underpinning of his work is unwavering, Thomas makes prints that are remarkably beautiful objects. Operating in a medium that remains associated with the factual record and documentary, he has relentlessly made the case for a photographic practice in which imagination is a primary agent. He discusses his interest in “the puzzle of photography”, the distinctive geneses of his various series of work, and his conviction that while seeking an “intellectually high-end product… of course I want to have fun”. He reflects on the early influence of the photographer Ernst Haas, how Piero della Francesca influenced his early Portraits series, how he chose to study art over astronomy, yet outer space has remained a core concern in his work, and how the satirical television show Spitting Image proved an unlikely influence. Of course, he reflects on the work of numerous photographers, from Eugène Atget and Walker Evans to Lou Landauer and his teachers in Düsseldorf, Bernd and Hilla Becher. Il n'en fallait pas plus pour en faire l'une des figures les plus mystérieuses de toute l'histoire biblique, dont se sont emparés tous les siècles : alors qu'elle est une femme, elle est riche, puissante comme le plus grand des rois d'Israël, et se présente comme son égal d'un point de vue intellectuel. « La reine de Saba est un personnage important aussi bien dans le judaïsme, que dans le christianisme et l'islam. Ce qui est curieux puisqu'elle n'est que brièvement évoquée, que ses origines sont mystérieuses et son rôle relativement secondaire dans les textes sacrés. After noticeably limping during a soccer game in 2019, Maggie Spada's daughter Lucy was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma at the age of 9. After going through a very difficult treatment protocol, Lucy is now 5 years removed from this diagnosis and is doing very well. Maggie will talk about Lucy and will also talk about her Little Warriors Foundation, which she and her husband Piero started when they learned about how little money the Federal Government was contributing to Pediatric Cancer, and also learning about the treatments that Lucy and other Ewings Sarcoma patients have to go through, which has not changed in over 40 years.
