Passing the thermometer of conversation over the rock and roll news to see where the mercury rises, which this week includes … … the new Barbra Streisand duets album. Duets are ‘playlets', small intense dramas that depend on human interaction, but so many are recorded separately (including, tragically, Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell). … but … duets you HAVE to hear! eg Cash & Carter, Otis Redding & Carla Thomas, Ray Charles & Betty Carter, Siouxsie & Morrissey, Nick Cave & Kylie, Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush. … the extraordinary story of the rebirth and Indian Summer of Mississippi John Hurt after 40 years of invisibility.   … blues lyrics that now seem unimaginable. … Frank Zappa as a drug dealer? Miles Davis as a pimp? Cyndi Lauper as a trophy wife? Real or made-up Miami Vice rock star cameos.  … great opening lines – “We got married in a fever …!” … how you always learn something you never knew about someone from their obituary - like Mike Peters' involvement in the highest altitude concert ever performed (on Everest with Glenn Tilbrook and Slim Jim Phantom). … where people listen to the Word In Your Ear “poddy” – eg in the bath, in court, at wedding receptions, by the Allman Brothers' graveside. Plus birthday guest John Montagna on rock stars who should be in a TV series.Help us to keep the conversation going by joining our Patreon community: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Swamp rock afficianados, this is your podcast!Despite forming in California, Creedence Clearwater Revival was known for their Louisiana sound often described as "swamp rock" or later as roots rock.  They tended towards an earlier rock sound during a time when much of their fellow performers were moving in a more psychedelic direction.  But CCR (as the band was known, or Creedence) would find prolific success in the time from 1969 to 1971 when they would produce 14 consecutive top 10 singles and five consecutive top 10 albums. The band featuring front man and multi instrumentalist John Fogerty, brother Tom Fogerty on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Stu Cook on bass, and Doug Clifford on percussion got their start as a band playing rock standards and instrumentals in 1959 under the name "The Blue Velvets."  They changed their name to "the Golliwogs" in 1964, then became CCR in 1967.  The name Creedence Clearwater Revival comes from three sources - John Fogerty's friend Credence Newball, a beer commercial touting "clear water," and the word "revival" depicting the members' re-commitment to the band.Cosmo's Factory is the band's fifth studio album takes its title from the warehouse in Berkeley where the band practiced in early days.  Doug "Cosmo" Clifford called it "The Factory" because they practiced there almost daily.  This album went to number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts and remained there for nine weeks.  It is one of those albums that appears to be a "greatest hits" album rather than a studio release because of the number of very familiar songs originating on it.The group would be prolific, but short-lived.  Tom Fogerty left the group at the end of 1971 and the rest had an acrimonious falling out shortly thereafter.  But for a few years, CCR produced a gigantic body of work, despite never having a number 1 hit.Wayne takes us through this classic album of swamp rock for this week's podcast. Who'll Stop the RainOften considered a Viet Nam protest song, the inspiration for this track is actually Woodstock, where multitudes of music fans congregated in the rain to hear the music of the age.  It was released as a double A single along with "Travelin' Band," and went to number 2 on the American charts.Run Through the JungleAnother song mistakenly considered to be a Viet Nam protest (and often used that way in films), Fogerty wrote this about the proliferation of guns in the United States, comparing city streets to a jungle.  This was another double A single release, paired with "Up Around the Bend."  It has appeared in multiple films including "Air America," "Rudy," and "Tropic Thunder."Up Around the BendThis track is a more straightforward invitation to a gathering that is, as you might guess, up around the bend.  It went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and number 3 on the UK singles charts.  John Fogerty wrote this song, as he did most of the original CCR tracks.Travelin' BandThis song draws its inspiration from 1950's rock songs, particularly paying homage to the style of Little Richard.  The lyrics talk about a band on the road.  It's reference to "737 coming out of the sky" - a new passenger plane at the time the song was written - put the song on a list of inappropriate tracks in a post-9/11 memo by Clear Channel. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Dark Shadows”A feature length horro film entitled "House of Dark Shadows" was released in 1970 based on the vampire soap opera.  STAFF PICKS:Tears of a Clown by Smokey Robinson & the MiraclesLynch's staff pick has upbeat music that belies the sad lyrics depicting a man who has to put on a happy front despite facing the loss of his love.  The track was originally recorded in 1966, but not released until 1970.  It topped both the UK charts and the US Billboard Hot 100.  Long Long Time by Linda RonstadtRob's staff pick may not be a rock song in the traditional sense, but it shows off the vocal capabilities of one of the leading female rock figures prior to her breakthrough as a soloist.  The song about a woman's undying love for a guy who will never be hers went to number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Diana RossBruce features a song written by Ashford and Simpson in 1966, and originally a hit for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell who took it to number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967.  Diana Ross released this as a solo song with a reworked sound incorporating gospel elements with strings and horns.  It went to number 1 making it Ross's first number 1 solo hit.Vehicle by The Ides of MarchWayne presents a one-hit wonder out of Chicago with a funky sound and a great horns section.  The vocalist and guitarist for The Ides of March would later become a founding member of Survivor.  General Motors used this song extensively in national advertising, and it will tend to get you driving faster! NOVELTY TRACK:Chicken Strut by the MetersThis novelty song inspired a short-lived dance, and wraps up this week's podcast. "Back to Black" brachte Amy Winehouse den internationalen Durchbruch. "Back to Black" ist in Europa am 21. "They tried to make me go to Rehab, but I won't go" Ihre Freunde haben sie gerettet und ihr zu einer Entzugskur geraten. "I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine. They tried to make me go to Rehab, but I won't go, go, go." Juli 2011 schließlich tot in ihrer Londoner Wohnung findet. __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Back to Black" wird im Podcast gesprochen (06:02) – "Rehab" (09:51) – "You Know I'm No Good" (13:29) – "Me & Mr Jones" (16:12) – "Back to Black" (21:49) – "Tears Dry on Their Own" (26:00) – "Wake Up Alone" __________ Über diese Songs wird außerdem im Podcast gesprochen (11:05) – "Jump Around" von House of Pain (22:29) – "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" von Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's __________ Shownotes Die letzten Stunden im Leben von Amy Winehouse (Rolling Stone)Amy Winehouse wäre heute 40 geworden (Rolling Stone)Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black": 10 Things You Didn't Know (Rolling Stone)ZDFinfo-Doku: "The Day the Rock Star Died: Amy Winehouse"YouTube-Kanal von Amy Winehouse __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen?

Although one of the most successful artists and songwriters of the 60's, Marvin Gaye had not released a solo studio album for two years prior to In the Groove, his eighth studio album.  Instead he had been releasing duet performances with artists like Kim Weston and Tammi Terrell.  Gaye was one of the primary artists shaping what would become the Motown sound, first as a session player, then as a solo artist and songwriter.  Gaye formed a vocal quartet called The Marquees shortly after leaving the Air Force in the late 50's.  The Marquees performed in the D.C. area, connecting with Bo Diddley who co-wrote their first (and only) single, "Wyatt Earp."  The group disbanded in 1960, and Marvin Gaye relocated to Detroit, connected with Barry Gordy around Christmas of 1960, and signing with Tamla, a Motown subsidiary.  By 1962 Gaye was a success as a singer, session musician, and writer. In the Groove was released in August of 1968, and would see its third single, I Heard It Through the Grapevine released in October.  This single would become Gaye's first number 1 hit.  October would also bring tragedy, when his vocal duet partner Tammi Terrell collapsed from exhaustion into Gaye's arms, later being diagnosed with a brain tumor which would eventually claim her life.  After the monster international success of I Heard It Through the Grapevine, the entire album would be re-released under that title.  The album was both a critical and commercial success.John Lynch brings us this soulful selection. I Heard It Through the GrapevineAlthough one of Gaye's most successful songs, he was not the first artist to record or release the song.  It was intended to be released by Gladys Knight & the Pips, who did so in September 1967.  The Miracles also recorded the song and released it in 1968.  Gaye's version would become the classic rendition.YouThis was the first single from the album, released in December of 1967, months before the album.  The song was about a man wanting to keep his relationship with a woman secret, because she was upper class and he was working class.  It featured a rougher Gaye vocal part than was typical of his previous songs, and  went to number 34 on the pop charts.ChainedThe second single would be released in August 1968, the same month as the album release.  Frank Wilson wrote and produced this song which went to number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The lyrics are about a man pining for a woman he lost and wants back. Some Kind of WonderfulThis deeper cut was not released as a single.  The Drifters originally released this song in 1961, and it was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King.  Many artists would cover this one, including Carole King and most recently Michael Bublé.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Barbarella by The Bob Crewe Generation (from the motion picture “Barbarella”) Jane Fonda's cult classic of bad science fiction films would appear in the theaters in October 1968. STAFF PICKS:On the Road Again by Canned Heat Bruce starts the staff picks with a blues and harmonica jam off Canned Heat's second album “Boogie with Canned Heat.”  The group takes its name from a 1928 Tommy Johnson song entitled "Canned Heat Blues."  Canned Heat's lead vocalist was Bob "The Bear" Hite, but Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson takes the lead for this song.  Chewy Chewy by Ohio ExpressRob features a happy bubblegum pop number from Mansfield, Ohio.  Ohio Express consisted of session musicians who put out the music for Super K Productions.  The group had a previous hit in "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy."Sunshine Help Me by Spooky Tooth Wayne brings us an acid rock deep cut written by Gary Wright of “Dream Weaver” fame.  The song itself is about letting the sunshine clear the singer's mind.  Spooky Tooth was a blues/psychedelic band from England active between 1967 and 1974.  This song was not a hit, but did appear on their greatest hits album.Hey Jude by The BeatlesLynch's staff picks is  one of the Beatles' biggest hits, though it was not released on a studio album at the time. It is also the longest single in the Beatles' catalog, running 7:11, the longest single ever released at the time.  It was written by Paul McCartney for John and Cynthia Lennon's son Julian when John and Cynthia were going through a divorce.     NOVELTY TRACK:Mr. Tambourine Man by the William ShatnerSomehow Shatner was able to put this song in the hopper while simultaneously starring as Captain Kirk in the original run of the TV show, Star Trek.  We'll let you decide whether he missed his calling as a rock star.

Hailing from Chicago, Paulette became the lead singer with Ask Rufus and was solely responsible for introducing the group to her dearest friend, Chaka Khan. Paulette and Chaka shared the lead in Ask Rufus for some time before Paulette left the band.  “I was so upset about leaving my daughter to tour with Rufus for long periods. I decided that the jingles were so lucrative that the best thing for me was to leave the group.”Moving from gig to gig, Paulette worked feverishly, and then, thanks to a recording produced by Donny Hathaway and Phil Upchurch, she was “introduced” to Quincy Jones. Upchurch, the world-famous jazz guitarist, sent a studio recording to Quincy. Shortly after that, Paulette became solo/lead singer with Quincy during his “Body Heat” tour, and he featured her on his Mellow Madness album – the title song co-written by Paulette. Next, they toured Japan, where one of Paulette's dreams came true: singing a duet live with the legendary Sarah Vaughan while Quincy conducted the orchestra. After moving to New York City, Paulette also toured and sang live with Luther Vandross and recorded with Luther on every album he recorded from Forever For Always For Love. Paulette and Luther met when she was a Harlette with Bette Midler and became fast friends because Luther loved Paulette's voice and said she and he had the most incredible blend. Paulette performed all of the Tammi Terrell duets with Marvin Gaye on his last tour, which was recorded live.  “I felt like I was Marvin Gaye's kid sister. He always made me feel comfortable on stage singing with him." As one of the most in-demand background vocalists in the industry, Paulette worked with some of the best artists, performers, and producers, such as Quincy Jones, Luther Vandross, Bette Midler, Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, Joan Osborne, Billy Idol, David Bowie, Keith Emerson, The Brecker Brothers, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez, Lauryn Hill, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez, Patty LaBelle, Deborah Cox, Michael Jackson, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Herbie Hancock, Anastacia, Teri Lynne Carrington. She also recorded duets with Johnny Mathis and sang a solo on Noel Pointer's last CD, arranged the background vocals, and sang on them for Noel Pointer. Paulette has performed at jazz festivals /clubs, including the International Jazz Festival in The Netherlands and Thailand, Japan, Monterey, Indonesia, China, Trinidad, Milan, Amsterdam, Moscow, and Bern, Switzerland, including Ronnie Scotts in London and the Blue Note in Milan and Tokyo. Recently at the Blue Note in Beijing, China asked back for the second time.It is also essential to note that Paulette has sung solo/ group on numerous TV commercials such as for Folgers Coffee, Kellogg, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Diet Pepsi (with Britney Spears), Cadillac, Cover Girl, American Express, Celebrex, MasterCard, United Airlines, Budweiser Beer, Coors, eBay, and Mercedes.  “I sang so many national commercials that I can't even name them. I did 600, at least."Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. In June of 1987, 24 year-old Carrie McDowell—the second white female artist signed to Motown Records—walked the stage of the legendary music show "Soul Train," and rocked the house with a performance of her first and only single, the controversial "Uh Uh No No Casual Sex." For McDowell, it was no daunting task, as she was already a seasoned entertainer by then.Born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Carrie was a musical child prodigy destined to sing. At age 3, she could carry a note and embody the feelings of classic melodies from Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. By the time she was 10, Carrie went from showcasing her talent at local venues to dazzling the Vegas crowds alongside Liberace, George Burns, and comedy duo Rowan & Martin, and drawing standing ovations at the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. After her parents' divorce and poor management curtailed her early career, Carrie got her second wind by experimenting with musical styles, and embracing new opportunities with legendary Motown producer Willie Hutch, who introduced her to a song that, despite its lyrics, was part of a serious conversation society was having in the late 80s.Show TracklistingStella by Starlight - From the movie "The Uninvited" (Liberace)Over The Rainbow (Carrie McDowell)Top of The World - Carpenters Cover Live at the Tonight Show (Carrie McDowell)I'll Be There (Jackson 5)Uh Uh, No No Casual Sex (Carrie McDowell)Let's Wait Awhile (Janet Jackson)Can't Love You Tonight (Gwen Guthrie)Carrie McDowell on Social Media:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carriemcdowellmusic/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CarrieMcDowellMusicTwitter: https://twitter.com/carriemcmusicHost and Producer: Diego MartinezExecutive Producer: Nicholas "NickFresh" PuzoAudio Engineer: Adam Fogel Follow us on social media: @choonspodSubscribe to our PATREON: patreon.com/choonspod
