Paul Jones is one of British music's true originals—a singer, songwriter, harmonica player, actor, broadcaster, and blues pioneer whose career has spanned over six decades. Best known as the original frontman of Manfred Mann, Paul helped define the sound of the '60s British Invasion. But there's so much more to his story than pop success.Born Paul Pond in Portsmouth in 1942, Paul had a bright academic future—earning a place at Oxford. But it was the blues, not the books, that really captured his heart. Drawn to the raw emotion of American R&B and blues, he immersed himself in music, gigging in London clubs and building ties with future legends like Alexis Korner, Cyril Davies, and Brian Jones. In fact, Paul was briefly approached to front a little band called The Rolling Stones. He turned them down. Instead, he chose a different path. Rebranded as Paul Jones , he joined a jazz-influenced band led by South African keyboardist Manfred Mann. The group took on the name and quickly became one of the sharpest acts on the British scene. The band scored their first big hit with “5-4-3-2-1,” then came “Do Wah Diddy Diddy.” It was an instant smash—hitting number one in both the UK and the US and cementing the band's place in pop history. Paul Jones became a household name, fronting a string of hits including “Sha La La,” “Come Tomorrow,” and “Pretty Flamingo.” But just as things were peaking, Paul shocked fans by stepping away from Manfred Mann in '66. He didn't want to be boxed into pop stardom. His first solo release, “I've Been a Bad, Bad Boy,” was a top 10 hit, and not long after, he starred in the film Privilege. From there, Paul split his time between stage and studio. He released a number of solo albums and never chased the pop charts, choosing instead to focus on artistry and authenticity. In the late '70s, Jones experienced a major musical rebirth. Alongside former bandmate Tom McGuinness, he co-founded The Blues Band—a group that would lead a new wave of British blues. Their first record, The Official Blues Band Bootleg Album, was self-released when no label wanted it. But it quickly found a fanbase and helped kick-start a blues revival in the UK. Over the years, The Blues Band became a cult favourite, recording over 20 albums and touring consistently for decades. Jones, with his fiery harmonica and soulful voice, became a beloved figure in the blues world. As if that weren't enough, Jones also became a prominent broadcaster. In 1986, he began hosting The Blues Show with Paul Jones on BBC Radio 2—a program that would run for 32 years. His warm, knowledgeable voice introduced listeners to everyone from blues giants like B.B. King and Muddy Waters to new acts keeping the genre alive. His influence on the blues scene through radio is as significant as his work on stage. In the 2000s, Jones released the critically acclaimed album Starting All Over Again, featuring collaborations with soul legends like Percy Sledge and Eric Bibb. It was a masterclass in classic songwriting, vocal nuance, and heartfelt delivery—proof that Paul Jones had lost none of his fire.Throughout his career, Jones worked with a who's who of music royalty: Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Jack Bruce, Jeff Beck, Mick Abrahams, and more. Whether singing, playing harmonica, or narrating the story of the blues, he brought depth, grace, and passion to every project.Later in life, Paul experienced a personal transformation. He became a born-again Christian and began to incorporate gospel into his musical world. His faith added a new layer to his performances, blending spirit and soul with honesty and humility. From Oxford scholar to '60s heartthrob, from blues crusader to BBC staple, Paul Jones has never stood still. He turned down the Rolling Stones, left a hit band at its height, helped revive the blues, and became a trusted voice for generations of listeners. Always evolving, always authentic—Paul Jones is one of the great unsung heroes of British music.

Episode 292: When singer Madeleine Peyroux released her breakout album Careless Love in 2004, her voice and phrasing, with echoes of Billie Holiday and Joni Mitchell, had more verve than the newly famous Norah Jones and more blues than Diana Krall. Her story was more remarkable than either. She'd basically run away from school as an American teenager living in Paris and joined a touring/busking ensemble the Lost and Wandering Jazz and Blues Band. After 2004 she became a vital, critically acclaimed artist with a unique fusion of jazz, blues, country and folk. Now she's released her first entirely self-written songs, guided by the legendary producer Elliot Scheiner, called Let's Walk.

Today, I'm joined by the Reverend Shawn Amos to turn a spotlight on a classic blues record that has reverberated down almost six decades since its recording - Junior Wells 'Hoodoo Man Blues'. We talk about the contrast between Junior Wells unprecedented creative feedom and the restraints on blues artists at Chess Records, the interplay with Buddy Guy's guitar playing and Buddy's friendship with Junior, how the album defies blues stereotypes, Junior's harmonica playing, Wells' influence on Shawn as a live performer, the trap of fake authenticity, inventing yourself as an artist, what Beyonce and Bob Dylan have in common, how the album fits into the context of the mid-60s, hiccup licks, how Shawn approaches performing 'Hoodoo Man Blues', why blues music shouldn't be a museum piece and more.

Idén negyven éves a Vadászat című Hobo Blues Band-album. Hobóék 2024. február 10-én a Papp László Budapest Sportarénában tartottak jubileumi koncertjüket, amelyet további vidéki fellépések követnek, illetve megjelent egy Rozgonyi Péter által maszterizált újrakiadás CD-n a GrundRecords jóvoltából. A hirtelen felindulásból született, végül a hazai könnyűzene meghatározó klasszikusává vált Vadászat Hobo és Deák "Bill" Gyula kettősével önmagában képes egy egyedi atmoszféra megteremtésére, azonban az album különlegessége a kivételes zenei sokszínűségében is rejlik. A Wanted podcast legfrissebb adásában Jávorszky Béla Szilárd újságíróval ültünk le beszélgetni a Vadászat előzményeiről és utóéletéről. Műsorvezető: Némezh Róbert, néha közbeszól: Bihari Balázs. A Wanted podcast adása az NKA Hangfoglaló program támogatásával készült.

The Blindside Blues band just dropped their sixteenth album titled “XVI" via Jib Machine Records. Mike and the band just returned from their September tour in Poland, and he tells us how American Blues music connects with people all over the world. He also shares the importance music has had in his life. When I first heard Mike sing, I thought it was Jack Bruce from Cream. Mike Onesko soulful voice is the heart of the Blindside Blues Band sound. Mike was discovered in the clubs of Martin County, California by Shrapnel records president Mike Varney. Shortly after, Onesko formed the Blindside Blues Band with Scott Johnson on guitar, Gregg Chaisson on bass guitar and, Racer X frontman and Badlands drummer, Jeff Martin on drums. The band put out three records with this lineup. Although Gregg played on the records he never did any live shows with the band. That duty was filled admirably by Kier Staeheli. The last Shrapnel lineup for the Blindside Blues Band was Mike Onesko, Mike Varney, Aysnley Dunbar, James Lomenzo. Onesko went on to Comet Records in Italy to record many records such as "Mike Onesko's Guitar Army", "Smokehouse Sessions", "Live At The Torrita Blues Festival, Italy", as well as "Voodoo Crossing" and "Gypsy Blood" (both Jimi Hendrix tributes). mikeonesko.com

It's a passion project that has been brewing since the mid-1990s for Gina Coleman, whose encounter with the legendary Odetta left a powerful impression. The moment when Gina and Odetta connected, sang side-by-side and locked together in harmony was a seminal moment in her career. This inspiration will come full circle in the form of a live album to be recorded May 12th and 13th in Studio 9 at the Porches Inn. The switch to acoustic and performing folk standards will be a switch for the Misty Blues. But pushing to the edges of the blues genre is nothing new for the band. And anyway, as Gina explains in this episode, African-American folk music is most certainly blues in her book. This performance and upcoming album comes on the heels of Misty Blues' most recent album "Outside the Lines," which includes a rich array of familiar voices and performers from the Berkshires and beyond. Gina and her band have not skipped a beat, not even during the pandemic, when they remarkably released three albums with the band members recording virtually. The beat goes on for Gina, and as someone who admits she basically doesn't sleep, there is surely more to come. We love it! Also in this episode we cover: the story of meeting Odetta at the Bottomline club in New York City as a guest of Arlo Guthrie, the decision to make this tribute a live album, growing up on the Bronx as hip hop and rap came on the scene, musical influences, including Motown and salsa, the earlier band Cole Connection and their acoustic funk style, a part in a Williamstown Theatre Festival production as a gospel singer that led to a transformative transition to blues, the rich variety of blues music, Gina's songwriting process and how much of it comes while she is driving, why she once utilized answering machines in her songwriting process, her son Diego choosing music as a major at Williams College, the evolution of Misty Blues from a blues tribute band to producing original music, the story of Charles Neville performing on an album, Gina's 27 years coaching rugby at Williams College and why the sport inspires her, performing at Firefly in Lenox and more. I hope you'll enjoy my conversation with Gina Coleman. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-krol/support
