In this soulful episode of Dem Vinyl Boyz, we dive into The Allman Brothers Band’s sophomore album, Idlewild South, released in 1970. Widely regarded as one of the greatest Southern rock albums of all time, Idlewild South solidified the band’s reputation for blending blues, rock, and jazz into a sound that was entirely their own. Produced by the legendary Tom Dowd, this album features standout tracks like "Midnight Rider," "Revival," and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." Each song showcases the band's incredible musicianship, from Duane Allman’s mesmerizing slide guitar to Gregg Allman’s soulful vocals and poetic songwriting. With its mix of emotional ballads and high-energy jams, Idlewild South set the stage for the band’s meteoric rise in the early 70s. Throughout this episode, we’ll explore the stories behind the songs, the creative process during the recording at Capricorn Studios, and the album’s lasting impact on Southern rock and American music. We’ll also discuss how Idlewild South became a crucial stepping stone for the band as they prepared for their iconic live album, At Fillmore East. Join us on Dem Vinyl Boyz as we celebrate Idlewild South, an album that captures the spirit, soul, and sound of The Allman Brothers Band and continues to inspire musicians and fans alike.

"Mix how you hear it!" Jeremy talked about recording Greg Allman, why no click track needed, when to use ribbon mics, thumb vs pick bass, how to mic drums, why you should get a console and tape machine, Hammond organs, and comping vocals in Logic. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Jeremy Stephens, a music producer, mixer based in north Alabama, about an hour and a half south of Nashville. Jeremy has had the honor of collaborating with some of the greatest musicians on earth, from the Alabama Shakes to Jason Isbell, Gregg Allman to Chuck Leavell. “I learned the art of producing and recording from legendary rock producer Johnny Sandlin. He served as Johnny's right-hand man for many years, learning everything there is to know about making a goddamn good record.” In 2001, Jeremy started Clearwave Recording Studio as a cost effective place to craft records on his own terms. It quickly became a sonic sanctuary for indie rock, americana, and a fresh alternative to the cookie cutter Nashville thing. “This is a place where creative souls thrive, where the ideas come to life, and where being different ain't just okay – it's downright expected.” The goal here is to make hit records and win Grammys, and to do it the right way. Jeremy remains convinced that with the right approach, anything is possible. That's why he focuses on capturing the very best performances of great songs, and gives his musicians the freedom to explore and create. Thank you to Craig Alvin for the introduction! It's little wonder why Grammy Award winning guitarist, vocalist, producer, and band leader Warren Haynes has been hailed by every major publication worldwide. As a solo artist, member of the Allman Brothers Band and leader of the group Gov't Mule, his accomplishments have been stirring the senses of audiences for better than 40 years. His new solo album, Million Voices Whisper, is already ranked as one of the best efforts of his career, and it's little wonder why. His passionate performances on each and every track offer a call for unity and optimism that's sorely needed in this divided world. It expresses the positivity of change and looking forward to the future through a new lens – one that starts within. At the same time, Haynes hasn't forgotten the victims of Hurricane Helene, the storm that ravished parts of his native North Carolina. Prolific keyboardist/organist talks about being the musical director for Gregg Allman and his roots in the early seventy's blues psych band known as Cookin' Mama.
By any description, Randall Bramblett can claim a varied career. Aside from the fact that he's released no fewer than 15 solo albums, as a solo artist, he's also been a much in-demand session player, having worked with Gregg Allman, Bonnie Raitt, Robbie Robertson, Elvin Bishop, Steve Winwood, Widespread Panic, and any number of others. That's hardly surprising considering the fact that he's a multi-instrumentalist who's adept on keyboards, saxophones, flute, guitar, mandolin, and harmonica.Bramblett's career dates back to the early ‘70s when he played a major role in the band Sea Level, a jazzy spin-off from the Allman Brothers Band. In the years since, he's continued to pursue a decidedly varied array of genres, including rock, jazz, blues and R&B. With his new album, Paradise Breakdown, he shares a similar set of sounds, making it an ideal showcase for his verve and versatility. The Allman Brothers Band, established in 1969 in Georgia, stands as a cornerstone of Southern rock and American music history. Founded by brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, along with Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, Berry Oakley, and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson, the band was instrumental in blending rock, blues, jazz, and country music into a genre-defining sound. Their innovative use of dual lead guitars and extended improvisational jams set them apart, creating a live experience that was both powerful and deeply emotional. Tragically, Duane Allman's death in a motorcycle accident in 1971 was a devastating blow, but the band soldiered on, with guitarist Dickey Betts stepping up as a leading creative force. The subsequent album, Eat a Peach (1972), featured both live and studio tracks. Throughout the 70s, the Allman Brothers Band produced a series of critically acclaimed albums, intertwining guitar lines earned them a massive following. However, the late 70s brought internal tensions, substance abuse issues, and the death of bassist Berry Oakley, leading to several breakups and reunions. The band experienced a resurgence in the late 80s and 90s and officially disbanded in 2014. During this time Gregg Allman shared a complex and evolving relationship with his son, Devon. Born in 1972 Devon grew up largely separated from his famous father due to Gregg's demanding career and his battle with substance abuse. Despite this distance, Devon was profoundly influenced by his father's music and the legacy of the Allman Brothers Band. As Devon grew, he pursued his own path in music, forming the band Honeytribe and later joining the Royal Southern Brotherhood. Despite their time apart, music became a bridge between father and son. Gregg and Devon reconnected and shared the stage at various times. Following Gregg's death in 2017, Devon continued to carry the torch of Southern rock through The Allman Betts Band, a group he formed with Duane Betts, son of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. The Allman Betts Band re-captures the spirit of the Allman Brothers and the chemistry between Devon and Duane is palpable. Their collaboration is not just a continuation of their family legacies but a creative partnership that has revitalised the Southern rock genre for the modern era. On this episode of Tent Show Radio, Rock n Roll recording artists and globetrotting journeymen, Devon Allman & Donavon Frankenreiter perform a career spanning set, showcasing songs off their collaborative EP Rollers. For nearly four decades Donavon Frankenreiter has been traveling the globe, first as a professional surfer and now as a musician. With over a dozen albums under his belt, Frankenreiter has worked it on the touring trail worldwide for three decades. Donavon is a brand ambassador for Flying Embers as well as Sanuk Footwear and also co-owner of Humble Brands, Caddis Eyewear and several other companies. Blues Music Award-winning singer, guitarist, songwriter, and producer Devon Allman (son of Rock legend Gregg Allman) has appeared at the world's biggest festivals and has co-founded the supergroups Royal Southern Brotherhood and The Allman Betts Band amassing a recording catalog of 11 albums. He writes a column for Guitar Player Magazine, is endorsed by Gibson guitars, and serves on the board of directors for the National Blues Museum. In June of 2023, Allman & Frankenreiter released their collaborative EP, Rollers, a 6-song collection, produced by Luther Dickinson of the multiple Grammy-nominated North Mississippi Allstars and mastered by Brad Sarno at Blue Jade Audio, featuring previously released singles “Calling All You Riders” and “See It All” as well as a guest appearance from Maggie Rose on the track “We Belong.” The songs on Rollers serve as the soundtrack for the duo's world-record breaking See It All Tour, where Allman and Frankenreiter set the Official World Record for fastest time to play a concert in each of the 50 states. The execution was brutal, but the rock ‘n' roll recording artists and longtime friends, along with their talented band mates – Matt Grundy (bass), John Lum (drums), David Gomez (percussion, sax), Jackson Stokes (guitar), were successful in breaking the previous record, playing 50 shows in 49 days in the summer of 2023, one of those dates being under the tent at Big Top Chautauqua. FLW Special - Purple Rain at 40 In this very special episode, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the film “Purple Rain”. The overwhelming success of the movie made Prince the first artist in history to have the same project simultaneously #1 on the singles, albums, and movie charts in the United States. We speak to one of the foremost Prince experts; author and podcaster Alan Light. Alan talks about the creation of Purple Rain the song, the album and the movie. He also reveals… How the version of the title track that we're all familiar with was recorded in one take at a fundraiser. It was also the first time that 19-year-old Wendy Melvoin had played with the band. Movie executives didn't want to cast Prince in the lead role, and suggested much more famous star (who would have been badly miscast!) How Prince tried to recruit Stevie Nicks to help with the lyrics for “Purple Rain” - and why she said no. How the movie has held up well (for its live performances) and been held up to ridicule (for its acting performances and misogyny). Prince's tenuous relationship with Morris Day & The Time – and his greatest musical regret. Alan Light is the prolific author of many music biographies, including his books about Tupac Shakur, Nina Simone and The Beastie Boys. He also collaborated on “My Cross To Bear”, the Gregg Allman autobiography and Peter Frampton's “Do You Feel Like I Do”. Other books include “The Holy Or The Broken” – a great history of the Leonard Cohen masterpiece “Hallelujah”; and of course, “Let's Go Crazy: Prince and the making of Purple Rain”. Alan is also the co-host of the “Sound Up” podcast with his good friend Marc Goodman.

It is a pleasure to welcome singer-songwriter and guitarist Danielia Cotton to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Danielia is a New York City-based Americana/Roots Rook artist. She grew up nurturing her natural musical gifts in rural Hopewell, New Jersey, where she was one of only a half dozen Black kids in school. After being the first woman in her family to graduate college, she continued to fight against preconceived notions, naming her first full-length studio album, Small White Town, as a nod to her upbringing. Over the past few decades, Danielia Cotton opened for the likes of Gregg Allman, Bon Jovi, Robert Cray, Robert Randolph, Cristone “Kingfish” Ingram, Derek Trucks Band, and Aimee Mann. In addition, she was named Lilith Fair's Onstage Local Talent Winner, and her music has been heard in television shows and national commercials. The New York Times praised Daniella, stating, “She's a belter who can hold back or work her way up to a gospely blues-rock shout, and in the songs, she writes with her band's brawny guitar riffs, she grapples with the road, salvation, holding on, and letting go.” Daniella's music also received praise from Consequence, Entertainment Tonight, Refinery 29, and Spin. Her fanbase covers New York, the Jersey Shore, Philadelphia, and parts of the Midwest. She recently performed shows for the 2024 Light of Day Winterfest in Asbury Park. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Danielia Cotton spoke about the lessons she learned from opening for Gregg Allman, Bon Jovi, Robert Randolph, and Aimee Mann. No estoy allí. Olvido quien soy e intento interpretarme.
Devon Allman grew up in Texas and Missouri, and didn't meet his father, Gregg Allman, until he was a teenager. A simple letter brought the two of them together, and before long Devon was going on tour with the Allman Brothers Band—and getting to know his dad. In another twist of fate, he met his longtime collaborator Duane Betts, whose father, Dicky Betts, was also a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band. Now the two are performing, recording, and writing songs together. Devon joins Sid to talk about what it was like growing up with the Allman Brothers Band, as well as the unique relationship he had with his father. Plus, he'll share about his recent marriage and how his long friendship with Duane Betts eventually led to the Allman Family Revival Tour. A year ago, I began what will unfortunately be a regular series of these programs from now on…it's an annual look back on the musicians we lost in the previous year… Rock star deaths have been on our mind since late 2015 when Scott Weiland of the Stone Temple Pilots died, followed a few weeks later by Lemmy of Motorhead…then the floodgates opened in 2016: Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey of the eagles, both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake from Emerson Lake and Palmer, and George Michael—just to name a few… And since then, it seems we hear about a rock star death every couple of weeks…Tom Petty, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Gregg Allman, Walter Becker of Steely Dan, Chuck Mosley of Faith No More, Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode, Mark E. Smith of The Fall, Charlie Watts The Rolling Stones…it's been a lot to take in… Some of these deaths have been of natural causes, disease, and old age…others have involved drugs, alcohol, years of hard living, misadventure, and suicide… Here's the hard truth: rock has been around for about seventy years…many of the people who have provided us with our favourite music and some of the greatest songs of all time are reaching the end of their lives… No one is getting any younger...and over the next decade, we're going to lose some of the personalities who have always been with there for us over the last 30, 40, 50, or even 60 years... With that grim reality in mind, I think we need to continue with an annual retrospective at those whom we've lost in the last 12 months…they may be gone, but we need to recognize and celebrate their contributions to the world of music...this is 2023 in memoriam... All the way back in Season One, Stacie covered the marriage and divorce of Sonny and Cher. But Cher's marital adventures didn't end with Sonny Bono, as Alicia shares. After things fizzled between the pair, Cher went on to marry The Allman Brothers' Gregg Allman - who was unfortunately pretty wrapped up in a cycle of addiction at the time. Things were hard for the couple, and while they gave it a real go (with three divorce filings across their four years!), in the end, they were left merely as co-parents harboring a lot of affection and regret.
