It's really more of a spiritual sequel...   Are the kids getting into tapes because of Taylor Swift? What is “second screen” content? Will Killers of the Flower Moon ever get a physical release? Is there a need for movie takedown posts? Not critical reviews but social media that just shits on other peoples work. What did you call your video tape player back in the day? VHS player? VCR? Tape Machine? Russ and Zach delve into these questions and of course, much much more in this special extended episode of the Emerald City Video Podcast.

Today we're joined by Randall Taylor of Amulets to talk about a four track tape machine: the Tascam 414. We start the podcast with a full circle moment, then follow Randall's journey with tape: how he got started with it, how its particular quirks and challenges inspire the music he creates both live and on record, and generally why it's worth the hassle. We also get a tour of some pedals around his room, hear about the freedom of an uncomplicated setup with his project Jenny Haniver, and answer the burning question: what's the best song from the 90's?Check out Amulets: http://www.amuletsmusic.com/Buy Old Blood pedals: http://www.oldbloodnoise.comJoin the conversation in Discord: https://discord.com/invite/PhpA5MbN5uFollow us on the socials: @amulets, @oldbloodnoise, @andyothling, @danfromdsfLeave us a voicemail at 505-633-4647!

Tape Machine Alignment & MaintenanceIn this second of three parts on recording to magnetic tape, we look at why proper machine setup is critically important for good, consistent results. This episode is rather arcane because we are talking about an obsolete technology. It includes details on how and why adjustment is necessary, and a rough outline of how it is done.Tape machines from different eras and from different manufacturers have variations on these generic procedures, so if you want to learn how to do this, you will have to acquire the manual for your tape machine and follow the alignment instructions the manufacturer recommends. But this episode will give you a good sense of what is involved and what you have to look forward to if you want to record to tape. I don’t want to discourage anyone from doing this, but I think it is important to learn some of the basics before investing in tape technology. Some of the topics covered are: reference alignment tapes, setting head azimuth, adjusting record and playback level and equalization, setting tape bias for best performance (with a couple of different methods), mechanical wear and adjustment, parts replacement, and why all these things are necessary. As always, your comments and suggestions are welcomed. You can send email to dwfearn@dwfearn.comAnd for access to all the episodes of My Take on Music Recording, you can go to www.dougfearn.com
