Episode 171 Chapter 30, EMS Analog Synthesizers. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Show Notes: 01:03 和谐组:Alvin Curran,Natural Wonder Beauty Concept 10:21 吓人组:Colin Stetson 13:06 爵士组:Nala Sinephro,Ben LaMar Gay Ensemble,Elliot Galvin 21:19 对照组:Panda Bear,Erika de Casier 27:52 破坏组:Moin, caroline,YHWH Nailgun 37:40 催眠组: Alessandro Cortini, more eaze & claire rousay,石桥英子,Kali Malone 44:58 优雅组:Arooj Aftab 48:00 跳舞组:Two Shell,Djrum,Zoë Mc Pherson 50:20 太极组:Laurie Anderson 《周末变奏》开通豆瓣页面,欢迎标记、点评!

Our second edition for July has a diverse range of exciting new album releases. On AD Music, we have Divine Matrix's inventive ambient music peppered with great sequencing and rhythmic motion, with Udo Hanten's “Live In Belgium” features his guest, the legendary guitarist and keyboard player Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock, on ninety minutes of the most amazing cosmic electronic music. For the first time on Sequences, Jesse James Allen's “In Company Of Machines” is a dynamic, progressive new-age tapestry woven with traditional and synthesized instruments. Dino Pacifica recently acquired a Moog Matriarch synth and is a total newbie. His new release, “Musings of a Matriarch,” is a live improvised recording alone with that synth. International award-winning Australian electronic musician and composer Jim Ottaway is celebrating a significant milestone- the 20th anniversary of the release of his debut album “First Light.” Additionally, Ottaway is releasing a brand new album, “A Promise Of Eternity,” a melodic electronic work with uptempo slower tracks and intriguing sequencing. Finally, his cover of Jerry Lordan's “Wonderful Land” was made famous by the UK band The Shadows in 1962. Today we're joined by Randall Taylor of Amulets to talk about a four track tape machine: the Tascam 414. We start the podcast with a full circle moment, then follow Randall's journey with tape: how he got started with it, how its particular quirks and challenges inspire the music he creates both live and on record, and generally why it's worth the hassle. We also get a tour of some pedals around his room, hear about the freedom of an uncomplicated setup with his project Jenny Haniver, and answer the burning question: what's the best song from the 90's?Check out Amulets: http://www.amuletsmusic.com/Buy Old Blood pedals: http://www.oldbloodnoise.comJoin the conversation in Discord: https://discord.com/invite/PhpA5MbN5uFollow us on the socials: @amulets, @oldbloodnoise, @andyothling, @danfromdsfLeave us a voicemail at 505-633-4647!

Make Noise interfaces are like a riddle. They remind me of minimalistic art pieces from the early 20th century - inviting you to question geometric compositions of mysterious lines and shapes. These instruments purposefully do not give a straight answer but hint towards a direction one could take. This is a deliberate design decision that aims to shape the way musicians use a Make Noise instrument. The design invites a particular kind of composer - one that will dare to explore an untrodden path, in the search for exceptional sounds and performance along the way. The interface is like a guide, a map of sorts, that can be read in various ways. The Strega, in particular, is interesting because of its unconventional signal path. This is not your traditional "voice", to say the least. Placing the delay/reverb in the center of the circuit directly affects the interaction with the instrument and the kind of sounds that will come out of it. In this conversation, we dive into the challenges of designing an instrument like the Strega - a synthesizer that was made in close collaboration with artist Alessandro Cortini. Alessandro Cortini.

Recently, the Mute label reached out to me to see if I wanted to interview Alessandro Cortini, I had to chuckle a little to myself. Alessandro and I have had great conversations over the years, and I jumped at the opportunity to talk to him about his newest release: Scuro Chiaro. It's an amazing work – added to an already amazing body of work. Of course, in addition to talking about release info, we also rambled into discussions about the systems that he's been using, how he approaches sequencing, effects use with modular, development of the Make Noise Strega, and even his history with guitar. As always, fascinating stuff – and clearly one of the best interviews in our stack. Enjoy! Episode 34 of The Ambient Vault features my special guest The Broken Cradle. The Broken Cradle is an Ambient, Electronic, and Neoclassical artist and is the solo work of Eric McLean, a musician of over 20 years.Influenced by the likes of Nils Frahm, Alessandro Cortini, Brian Eno, and Olafur Arnalds, The Broken Cradle leans toward compositional ambient and neoclassical music that moves from soothing piano melodies to gritty and soaring synthetic atmospheres. His music tells a story through the moods and soundscapes, interposed with gentle felt piano and strings. The tracks featured in this episode, graciously shared by Eric, are off his album “You Are Here and I Am Yours”. See below for a statement from Eric about the album and a link to follow and listen to all things The Broken Cradle, and as always, thanks for listening!“You Are Here and I Am Yours" is the story of family. The LP is an intimate look at what it means to be a family, from the pains of infertility and loss to the joy of adoption and birth. This is my story. This is the love letter to my children, each a unique soul that came to us in equally unique ways. Each song is a piece of a 10-year journey and tries to capture a glimpse of the most important people and moments in my life.My hope is that you can find your own story here. While this is my memoir in a sense, I know that music takes on new shapes, meanings, and interpretations. It is yours to listen to, enjoy, and reflect on your own life.https://thebrokencradle.contactin.bio/If you enjoy the podcast, you can help support future episodes by subscribing to the podcast and leaving a review, following Brian on Instagram @heldbymachines, and subscribing to his YouTube channel. Hello! Ah yes, twas superb to catch up with the excellent Alessandro Cortini. He's someone that really connects with the soul of machines in a very rare way. He has a clear direction and opinion on so many crucial aspects of machine music, from the pure aesthetic tonal side of things to the way that individuality can be such a crucial asset in a world that's thirsty for original voices. We get into a lot of juicy topics and Alessandro is very open and clear with his advice and opinions which I hope you'll all get a lot from. I certainly did :) On with the links! For my audience, Anthony Rolando probably needs no introduction. As the product designer at Make Noise Music, his work is found in almost every modular system you’ll run across. From his earliest designs (such as the Maths) to his latest (like the Morphagene), he’s helping to define the future of modular systems. Recently, Make Noise has come out with a new standalone device – the Strega. This is a remarkable system-in-a-box that includes integrated effects and tone generation, and is particularly focused on live play. As a collaboration with Alessandro Cortini, the Strega is a deep, opinionated view on noise/sound manipulation, and launches a new perspective on what an ‘instrument’ is all about. In our discussion, we dive into depth on the development of the Strega, Tony’s personal musical adventures, and a bunch of follow-up from our previous podcast (https://artmusictech.libsyn.com/podcast-152-tony-rolando-of-make-noise). As with any discussion with Tony, it was revealing, challenging and inspiring. Enjoy! Transcription available at http://www.darwingrosse.com/AMT/transcript-0352.html

Alessandro Cortini should be well-known to most of the people that listen to this podcast. From his work with Nine Inch Nails, to his modular-fueled solo work, and to his inspirational videos and interviews, Alessandro is on the mainline of music tech. But he's also decades behind (in a good way...) because of his love of Don Buchla's designs and instruments. I know of no other person that is so obsessed with Buchla equipment - and making music with it. In our chat, we talk about the variety of ways that he interacts with his instruments, his interests in modulars that are more than gear collections, and the way that great gear inspires him to make the music he loves. We also talk about a few of his specific releases, and how they (sometimes inadvertently) come into being. Of course, I also get to ask about his cassette 4-track interests (another thing we share) - and how he finds unique ways of using one. I loved doing this interview; Alessandro was pretty hyped on coffee, so he was on fire! I hope that you enjoy listening to this - and are as inspired as I was. Cheers!

A little while ago we stumbled across a beautiful album by an unfamiliar duo - Diamont Dancer are made up of Pau Roca & Nacho Marco and have worked together to produce some of the finest in ambient, drone and experimental in recent times. Drawing influence from the likes of Brian Eno, Alessandro Cortini and John Carpenter they have captured a sound which sits somewhere between the ethereal and the haunting, it is dreamy in parts but comes not without a sinister twist. This mix series was made very much with the purpose of showcasing music like this, Diamont Dancer as a perfect soundtrack to your Monday. Listen as they select music by Fennesz & Sakamoto, Biosphere, Sonic Youth and more.
A long weekend yields special programming and so we're delighted to present an extra special afternoon episode of Eclectic Kettle for the Labor Day holiday. “Less Steve Lamaq, a little more Mark Radcliffe” is the plan. Tune in for afternoon choons, affable rambling, and the true meaning of Labor Day. Plus we'll replay our conversation with Matt B from last week's Tuesday show, and give you all another chance to indulge the wonders of the modular synth. What's more, this broadcast comes LIVE from BFF.fm's studio installation in the window of Artists Television Access on Valencia. So, stop by on your way to and from your grills and beer runs, watch Ben in action, gawp and wave, chill with a coffee in the Blue Fig parklet, perhaps. One way or another, we hope to see you there!Sorry it took a little while to get the podcast of this show up: The logistics of broadcasting from multiple locations are no joke. Massive thank yous to Lily Sloane and Forrest Guest for helping get the recordings wrangled. Enjoying the show? Please support BFF.FM with a donation. Musician Christopher Lathouwers stops by the podcast to talk about meeting me in third grade, his punk rock years, dropping out of high school, having dreadlocks down to his knees, being a middle child, Santa Maria vs. the Bay Area, moving to a tiny house in the mountains, his obsession with modular synthesis, how to say 'Moog', Don Buchla, Morton Subotnick, East Coast and West Coast synthesis, random voltage, when to stop the Turing machine, plucking the vactrol, sculpting sound, always pressing record, improvising at Synthesethesia, limiting himself to 6U, Alessandro Cortini, D.M.T., ibogaine, and conquering addictions through psychedelics.
