Episode 128 Terry Riley—Part 2, Solo Organ and Synthesizer Works Playlist Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 05:28 00:00 Terry Riley, “The Last Camel in Paris” from The Last Camel In Paris (2008 Elision Fields). Composed and performed on a Yamaha YC-45D combo organ custom-tuned to just intonation and outfitted with a digital delay system, Terry Riley. Concert recorded by Radio France for a France Culture program by Daniel Caux broadcast May 13, 1979, in the Atelier de Création Radiophonique series. The delay circuit was created by Chester Wood, Riley road technician. It fed stereo signals to the digital delay. The YC-45D was modified so that it had separate mono outputs for each of its two keyboards, resulting in 4-channel live performances comprising two live channels and two delayed. Riley improvised these concerts around given themes and patterns. Wood created the delay, which they called “the shadow,” out of “an ancient computer he had procured from Don Buchla and this tour was the maiden voyage to try it out,” (Riley). Previously, the analog delay Riley used on works such as the Dervishes (see previous episode) created a fixed-length delay based on the physical head gap of the tape recorders used, which consisted only of two delays of 7.5 inches per secod and 3.75 inches per second, the speeds available on his Revox tape machine. The digital delay allowed Riley to fine tune the pause before a sound would repeat, finding tape delays that worked well with the tempos he was using in his compositions. This concert came after the release of Shri Camel album on CBS, a widely known release. I thought hearing these live variations on that work would be of interest. 50:58 05:34 Terry Riley, “Eastern Man” from Songs For The Ten Voices Of The Two Prophets (1983 Kuckuck). Composed, Voice, two Prophet 5 synthesizers by Terry Riley. Recorded in concert on May 10, 1982, at Amerika-Haus in Munich. Recorded digitally on Sony PCM-100 and PCM-1610 equipment. 11:19 56:39 Terry Riley, “Aleph Part 1” from Aleph (2012 Tzadik). Composed, Korg Triton Studio 88 synthesizer, Recorded, Liner Notes, and Produced by Terry Riley. Recorded in 2008, Aleph was originally created for the Aleph-Bet sound project organized by John Zorn for the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. 45:46 01:07:56 Opening background music: Terry Riley, “Anthem of the Trinity” from Shri Camel (1980 CBS). Produced, Composed, Performed in real-time on a modified dual-manual, Yamaha YC-45-D Electronic Organ with just intonation and digital delay, by Terry Riley. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. Pink Floyd's 1967 concerts were raw, fast and unpredictable musical experiences. Many concert setlists are incomplete or missing. The best-surviving evidence exists in snippets of film, two BBC radio sessions, photographs and three audience recordings captured between September and November 1967. In this episode, we reflect on this essential cluster of amateur recordings: who taped them and how, what to listen for, the degree to which they reflect Syd's withdrawal, what's missing and the possibilities for the existing tapes and new discoveries. Ooh, Baby, Ooooh wee!Ooh, baby, oooooh wee! It's that Million Dollar Bash.I hear that chorus and I'm smiling. It's a celebration, a party. Dylan and the boys are off the hard road, and they're just having fun in the Big Pink basement with the Revox tape recorder. There has been some interpretative gobble dee gook about it being Dylan's satirical payback to Andy Warhol and his pretentious Factory parties, with a salvo to Edie Sedgwick - the (“big dumb blonde) -, who dumped him, but really, that feels like a stretch. Those intimations might be there, but when Bob sings:“Well, I'm hittin' it too hard, my stones won't take-I get up in the morning but it's too early to wake,First it's hello, goodbye, then push and then crash,But we're all gonna make it at that mIllion dollar bash!It feels to me like an expression of sweet release. An appreciation for the moment at hand. And, imagining where the heads of the bar band turned folk-rock players assembled in that bucolic place were at…. -, the men who, for me, comprised the greatest American band in rock history - in the chrysalis from which they were about to emerge to ignite a musical revolution - I can feel the spontaneous energy of joyous creation. Oooh baby, Oooh weeeee!

”Good day, dearest ‘OwlHeads'”. I pray you are all preening your feathers magnificently. I offer you here today Episode 43 of my songwriter podcast series … where my song vaults and archives are again raided for my rare demos, odds and sods and sonic misfits. This month's show features a little gem I concocted with the “Go West” boys, Richard Drummie and Peter Cox; I do remember quite special studio sessions with those lads. I'll play you a song I'm extremely proud of that I demoed with Earth, Wind and Fire's majestic vocalist Philip Bailey at the legendary EWF studios, “The Complex”, in LA. Great memories of working with a true gentleman of soul music. And I'll play you a demo of another amazing singer that I worked and wrote with, the peerless John Waite when he was leading the rock band “Bad English”. It's a spontaneous, raw, one-day home demo that, I have to say, gives the actual final master recording a damn good run for its money! There'll be a truly vintage retro playback of one of the first demos I ever wrote and recorded with my songwriter partner Brian Fairweather back in London in the late, hazy 1970s … a mono analog 2 track Revox recording of a song eventually recorded (if you can believe this) by the British “The Kenny Everett Video Show” dance troupe, “Hot Gossip”. I'm being very brave here, because the demo is as homemade and sonically compromised as can be imagined. Yet, weirdly, I still think Huey Lewis and the News back in the day could have done a great job with it!

Episode 94 Electronic Drone Music Playlist Yves Klein, “Monotone-Silence Symphony” written in 1947. I could not find any recorded versions of this piece, so I produced this realization of my own to capture the feel and nature of this drone work. Klein conceived this as performance art in which an orchestra would only play a single note, continuously, for 20 minutes followed by another 20 minutes of silence. I've examined the score and can see that Klein also intended that the same note could be played in different octaves. The playing would have been staged so that one group of musicians could overlap another, both for reasons of fatigue but also to allow smooth transitions for the wind instruments because players would need to take a breath. My version includes electronic instruments for multiple parts, each part playing the same note, often in different octaves. The introduction of instrumental groups was planned in stages, each overlapping the previous grouping, gradually shortening in duration as the piece goes on. La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, “31 VII 69 10:26 - 10:49 PM” from 31 VII 69 10:26 - 10:49 PM / 23 VIII 64 2:50:45 - 3:11 AM The Volga Delta (1969 Edition X). Eponymous untitled album popularly known as "The Black Record" or "The Black Album" Mine is an original copy. The cover is black gloss print on matt black and very hard to read. Numbered edition limited to 2800 copies of which numbers 1-98 are dated and signed by the artists. This work “was recorded at the date and time indicated in the title, at Galerie Heiner Friedrich, München. The work “31 VII 69 10:26-10:49 PM” is a section of the longer work: Map Of 49's Dream The Two Systems Of Eleven Sets Of Galactic Intervals Ornamental Lightyears Tracery. Play this side at 33 1/3 rpm only.” Early work employing electronic drones. By the mid-sixties, Young and his partner Marian Zazeela were creating music for electronic drones as an extension of their group, The Theatre of Eternal Music. Using a Heathkit sine wave oscillator and later Moog modules as sources, they created drone pieces that employed “extended duration time signatures” and “long sustained tones, intervals, triads and chords to create the musical texture.” A reissue has now occurred on the label Super Viaduct. Tony Conrad, “Process Four of Fantastic Glissando” from Fantastic Glissando (2006 Table of The Elements). Dating from 1969, this recording contains various versions of the same sound piece, each processed slightly differently. “Process Four” accumulates the processed applied to the previous three processes. The first glissando recording was made using a sine wave oscillator processed through pump counter with a stereo-phase glissando. Recorded December 12, 1969, on a Revox reel-to-reel tape recorder set at 3¾ ips. Conrad was in LaMonte Young's circle of friends and performers and joined him on many productions of The Theatre of Eternal Music. Teresa Rampazzi , “Duodeno normale” and “Duodeno Patologico” from Musica Endoscopica (1972). Here we have two short electronic works from this remarkable women composer that emphasize the drone. The pulsing tones and textures were played manually using audio oscillators. Music produced by the N.P.S. (Nuove Proposte Sonore) group for the documentary entitled "Gastroscopia" (Gastroscopy) realized in 1972 by Prof. Domenico Oselladore, University of Padova, in collaboration with Istituto De Angeli s.p.a., Milan. This documentary was presented at the Scientific Film Festival, Policlinico Universitario di Padova, 1972. “Duodeno Normale” begins with a drone consisting of two continuous tones: a low-pitched buzz from a sawtooth wave accompanied by a pulsating higher-pitched tone. The drone is joined at the 11-second mark by a high-pitched ringing tone played on a third oscillator. This ringing tone is repeated every 5–8 seconds and sustained for two or more seconds each time. The irregular timing of the tone suggests that Rampazzi was manually playing it by turning the dial of an oscillators. The ringing tone is sustained for the duration of the piece, creating a three-part drone. The drones fade out, beginning with the lower buzzing tone. “Duodeno Patologico” uses a similar process. The Taj-Mahal Travelers, “The Taj-Mahal Travelers Between 6:20~6:46P.M.” from July 15, 1972 (1972 CBS/Sony). Released in Japan. Early album by the group founded by experimental electronic musician and violinist Takehisa Kosugi. Electronic Contrabass, Suntool, Harmonica, Performer Sheet Iron, Ryo Koike; Guitar Electronic Quiter, Percussion, Michihiro Kimura; Electronic Trumpet, Harmonica, Castanets, Seiji Nagai; Vibraphone, Santoor Suntool, Yukio Tsuchiya; Electronic Violin, Electronics, Radio Oscillators, Voice, Takehisa Kosugi; Vocals, Tokio Hasegawa. This album was recorded live at Sohgetsu Hall, Tokyo, Japan, July, 1972. Originally released using Sony's SQ quadraphonic system. Yoshi Wada, “Earth Horns with Electronic Drone”(1974) from Earth Horns with Electronic Drone (2009 EM Records). Recorded at Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York, February 24, 1974. Electronics, Liz Phillips; Pipehorn Players, Barbara Stewart, Garrett List, Jim Burton, Yoshi Wada; Electronic equipment designed by, Liz Phillips, Yoshi Wada; Pipehorns constructed by, composed by, recorded by, Yoshi Wada. Combining four of Wada's self-made "pipehorns" (constructed of plumbing materials, over three meters in length), with an electronic drone tuned to the electrical current of the performance space, this is a lost masterpiece of early drone/minimalism. The performance filled the space with complex overtones generated by the ever-shifting interplay of the breathing horns and the constant electronic drone. Lou Reed, “Metal Machine Music” (1975 RCA). All music and electronics by Lou Reed. Inspired by LaMonte Young, this is what I would call a noise drone! Reed himself points to the influence of Young in his lean liner notes. "SPECIFICATIONS: No Synthesizers, No ARP, No Instruments?” Sony 1/2 track; Uher 1/4 track; Pioneer 1/4 track; 5 piggyback Marshall Tube Amps in series; Arbitor distortor (Jimi's); Marantz Preamps; Marantz Amps; Altec Voice of America Monitor Speakers; Sennheiser Headphones; Drone cognizance and harmonic possibilities vis a vis Lamont Young's Dream Music; Rock orientation, melodically disguised, i.e. drag; Avoidance of any type of atonality.; Electro-Voice high filter microphones; Fender Tremolo Unit; Sunn Tremolo Unit; Ring Modulator/Octave Relay Jump; Fender Dual Showman Bass Amp with Reverb Unit (Pre-Columbia) white. Eliane Radigue, “Triptypch” Part 2” (1978). (2009 Important Records). Electronic Instrumentation: ARP 2500 modular synthesizer and analog, multitrack tape composition. The piece uses real-time ARP programming, tape loops, and recorded acoustic sounds. This piece is characteristic of Radigue's fervent exploration of gradually changing layers of harmonically intersecting tones. It is the kind of drone work that can easily dip the listener into a pool of trance and is one of the composer's many works grounded by her dedication to Tibetan Buddhism. Note the overall slowly evolving changes formed by overlapping sustained tones presented without any clearly articulated beginnings and endings. John Cage, Gary Verkade, “Organ2/ASLSP” from The Works for Organ (2013 Mode). John Cage composed “Organ2/ASLSP” in 1987 for solo organ. This piece has been realized at a variety of lengths, from about 30 minutes, to 8 hours, and what is arguably the longest interpretation of music ever played, now 23 years into its projected run of 639-years being performed now in Halberstadt Cathedral, Germany where a special organ was created to perform the piece unattended until a chord change is called for. This work is not electronic, although the pipe organ may be thought of by some, including me, as the first synthesizer. Although I won't be playing this work except in the background of this introduction, I needed to mention it because of its significance in the canon of drone music. “This composition consists, like Cage's ASLSP, of 8 pieces. Unlike ASLSP, however, all pieces here should be played. Any of the 8 pieces may be repeated, and these repetitions may be played subsequent to any of the other pieces. The published score consists of a title page, brief instructions, and 4 leaves with music. Each page contains 2 pieces.” Phill Niblock, “Guitar, too, for four—The Massed Version” from G2,44+/x2 (2002 Moikai). 24-track mix of guitar samples from Rafael Toral, Robert Poss, Susan Stenger, David First. Guitarists adding 2 live parts each to the 24 track mix version: Kevin Drumm, Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore, Robert Poss, Alan Licht. Niblock's usually works with acoustic instruments, so this venture with electric guitar is somewhat unique in his body of work. He asks musicians to play parts that are first recorded and then reworked in the mixing and editing process, largely to eradicate pauses and silences so that the sounds can be blended without such interruptions. Pauline Oliveros and Reynols, "Half a Dove in New York, Half a Dove in Buenos Aires" (1999) (2022 Smalltown Supersound). Reynols is an Argentinian experimental band that began in 1993 as Burt Reynols Ensamble. Band member Alan Courtis wrote to me, saying, “First of all, thanks a lot for mentioning our Pauline Oliveros in the arms of Reynols collaboration in your book Electronic & Experimental Music. She was a great musician/composer and friend.” After which he pointed me to a “recent release of an old project we made with Pauline back in 1999.” This is it! Opening background music: Tony Conrad, Arnold Dreyblatt, Jim O'Rourke, “Side 1” from Tonic 19-01-2001 (2023 Black Truffle). Performers, Arnold Dreyblatt, Jim O'Rourke, Tony Conrad. Recorded January 19,2001 at Tonic, New York City. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. The resurgence of reel-to-reel, whilst great, has brought with it a few myths and misnomers and, shall we say, less than best practice in using them. In part 2 of this 3 part mini-series on supporting reel-to-reel, Iain Betson of Reel Resilience discusses with his guests, Rob Brinkworth and Gary Hedge, about looking after the audio format we love. In the 1960s to 1980s, when tape recorders were in regular use, there were many people to fix them. Half a century down the line, the number who now do this has reduced for many reasons. So who's going to keep these recorders running for the next generation to enjoy? In part 1, of this two-part podcast, Iain Betson of Reel Resilience is in conversation with Rob Brinkworth and Gary Hedge, two UK based people who do just that. We talk "Guinea pigs", Fostex reliability and why a hit making studio of the 1980s hated their Studer A800! Support the show
In November of 1981 Soft Cell released their debut album. Made on a tight budget, the band purportedly recorded almost entirely on a ReVox tape recorder. With a borrowed drum machine, a Korg bass synth, and producer Mike Thorne's Synclavier, the band created a true synth pop classic. Let's talk Soft Cell, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret!
Part 2 of my conversion with Rob Brinkworth. In Episode 20 we talked about Rob's collection of Revox A77 and B77 machines and we carried on talking about the other recorders in his collection too, so I thought it would be a shame not to hear it. One of the models we spoke about was the successor to the B77, Studers attempt to bridge the gap between their consumer, Revox badge products and the professional Studer line-up, the Revox PR99.Then we got onto the "fun" of owning a Revox A700 and comparing it to its Studer brother, the B67. It's rare you can use the term game-changer in the world of reel-to-reel, In the genesis of the format developments came organically, with perhaps only the discovery of AC bias, to radically improve the recorded audio quality, being worthy of that title. But in terms of actual machines that title must go to a product introduced in 1968 by Studer under it's Revox brand name: The A77. 3 heads, 3 motors and tape handing that could match some professional machines. In this episode of Press Play> we talk all thing A77 (and a bit about its successor the B77) with a collector, font of knowledge about these models. and owner of an A77 that was mad eon day one of its production. We talk about our upcoming events too: The next webinar on the 29th January and the big one – the one day live attendance workshop on March 20th 2022. In conversation with Stuart Blacklock on buying an entry-level reel-to-reel machine. Stuart has been a guest on Press Play before, and it's with good reason we welcome him back. He is a man with a wealth of reel-to-reel experience and, as you’ll hear, a tape machine collection to match. We discuss machines to consider buying when first getting into the reel-to-reel format: What's affordable. What to look out for. Pros and cons. What it will cost. Also in this podcast is exciting news of a webinar Iain Betson of Reel Resilience will be running in late January 2021 on how to line-up your open-reel recorder. Sleep is holy – yet we don’t always cherish the beauty of the dream world. We escape rest to run in circles, chasing goals that seem more attractive than the fragile calmness of deep sleep. In this over saturated world, we may reach a point of no return and find ourselves at the edge of sanity. We could take an honest look at ourself and step back from this sporting life. But we’re holding on to the promises of the 24/7 mentality, yet constantly looking for alternative ways to survive the pace of a modern world. Somniferum is perpetually offering options for moments of relaxation. You might want to turn down the lights with one of the most powerful mantras known to mankind. Its temptation constantly calls for the long distance runner and it is hard to beat its patience. One day you might wake up and realise that it’s too late - the holy mountain has moved and won't easily get back into place. Embodied by Samm Escobar's "Human" and lovingly put to sleep by Lee Curac-Dahl

Kostas Metaxas of Metaxas & Sins: Despite the resurgence of the tape format, few people, or companies, have created a new tape-recorder. Kostas has not just done this once, but twice. First with the TRX recorder, positioned as a replacement for Nagra and Stellavox field recorders, and later with the Papillion 15, a studio based, or high-end audiophile, product. In part 1 of this two-part podcast Kostas takes us through his early years in hi-end hi-fi and music recording, to the story of how the TRX, and recently the Papillon, came about.Support the show (https://www.reelresilience.co.uk/newsletter)

This episode of Press Play> very much deals with the visual, which may seems strange considering open-reel is a sound format, but pretty much since the visual media started, tape machines have made an appearance. Asthetically they have just got it – those big reels turning, the meters moving, the lights flashing. The guest interview this episode is a person who addresses the visual image of the tape recorder: John Farrar runs Righteous Reels based in Dalton, Pennsylvania https://www.righteousreels.com/ where he produces a range of, well, simply awesome aluminium reels for tape machines. Did you understand me? Let me rephrase in order to confuse you better. I want to be misunderstood and improperly categorized. As soon as you think you know me, I shift my shape like Eglė and you will become a reptile. If you put me in a cage I will transform into a tree and my roots will be free until the end of time. Say it again, I don’t understand. Come back home, I miss you. Sometimes I need to restate in order to send a clearer message. Words can’t heal insanity but in the end it’s infinite trust that holds us together, strong like the sum of everything and nothing. We need to destroy ourselves once in a while, just to rebuild from scratch and start a new chapter of love. A ritual has opened your eyes. Departure into separate worlds, our universal language extinct slowly. Like a rainbow I can’t find you anymore. The cosmic loop of life is closing and my reincarnation is decided. Linda Westin’s visual message offers brightness to things being hidden in the dark. Her alternative view on reality has inspired me to restate and go deeper on my search for the truth.

We welcome back past contributor Oleg Netchaev, of Open Reel-to-Reel (facebook.com/openreel2reel), to talk about the large range, and wide genre, of pre-recorded tapes he now distributes, and to the owner of one of those companies producing them: Polish jazz musician Adam Czerwinski of AC Records. The Bristol Hi-Fi show is one of the three big hi-fi shows in the UK each year. In spite of 30 years in the professional audio sector, this is Iain Betson's first visit to a consumer audio show. He went there in search of tape, be it open-reel or cassette. Although he found little in evidence, what he did find was a great deal of enthusiasm for the format and optimism that it's use is about to lift off greatly very soon. He also found that lacing and playing a tape is like making a cup of tea....listen on.Support the show (https://www.reelresilience.co.uk/newsletter)
Chris has launched his business Revox, where he helps people share their voice on social media. His approach to teaching is very user-friendly and if you need help I urge you to take some time to talk with him. Chris also was on the Discovery channel show Undercover Billionaire. The time he spent on the show was very interesting coming from a fan of it. So stay tuned for the bonus clip to be released...
Before we get into the news I’d like to announce that I’m going to focus the Revox podcast going forward on Amazon specifically. Amazon is the area i have the most expertise and it’s where I feel like I can provide the most value. Although there are plenty of other marketing things I do and understand, Amazon is a place where I know I can consistently perform well, and that’s where I want to help out the most. There actually wasn’t much by way of news for Amazon this week. Like other businesses, I imagine Amazon spends most of Q1 planning goals for the year and how they will execute them. Speaking of planning, the new fee structures are about the hit next month, so make sure you have your prices and logistics set for that. Most people will see a small increase in fees overall, but many products will actually see a decrease in fees.Let’s get into the meat of today’s podcast. Amazon has recently started to really crack down on buyer-seller messaging. This has been a hot topic for quite some time, but now Amazon is really bringing down the hammer. The buyer-seller messages policies have pretty much always been in a state of flux. Usually, the policies have become stricter over the years. Recently Amazon has started cracking down on sellers and revoking their privileges entirely for no apparent reason. They’ll send out an email saying that the seller violated a policy, but one say which one directly. I think this all headed towards removing any sort of request from the platform at all. You’re already no longer allowed to send external links, promotional content, discounts on future products, or anything like that. Very VERY soon, the only think you’ll be able to contact your customer about is whether or not they got their package, which, if you’re doing FBA, isn’t even your job.
Open-reel or cassette, a tape recorder needs tape to work. Currently there are only two companies making new tape: ATR Magnetics in the US (www.atrtape.com) and Recording The Masters, or RTM, based in France (www.recordingthemasters.com). In this podcast we talk to Bette Spitz, owner of ATR and Theo Gardin, Sales Manager of RTM about their respective company ethos, the products they produce and why they love analogue audio.Support the show (https://www.reelresilience.co.uk/newsletter)
How do you know what to price your products and services for your customers? It can be difficult to know how to maximize your profit without ripping your customers off. We discuss these problems in today's episode of the Revox podcast.
In this episode our conversation is with Olog Netchaev, of Open Reel-to-Reel and UK distributor of STS Analog's range of pre-recorded quarter-inch tapes, about how the market for such tapes has naturally grown alongside the increase in interest in reel-to-reel. Oleg also tell us of how he thinks new-comers to open-reel can be helped to increase their understanding, and thus enjoyment of the format.Support the show (https://www.reelresilience.co.uk/newsletter)
We talk to Stuart Blacklock, well-known on the tape-recorder Facebook groups, about his staggering collection of tape-recorders. His passion for certain models and manufacturers and his desire to have a museum dedicated to tape. Plus we talk azimuth: What it is and why it's important to get right.Support the show (https://www.reelresilience.co.uk/newsletter)

Do you have a marketing calendar for your business? If not, why not? A marketing calendar is important to your business because if you don't schedule it on the calendar it will probably never get done. Having a marketing calendar is a very important tool for your business. And, if you think because you are an artist or a performer that you're not a "business person" think again. Your art IS your business and you are the face of it. The world of business today has changed tremendously and marketing has also changed a lot since I had my first marketing job working with Polygram Diversified Entertainment (which Jon Scher ran and is no longer in business), they were the portion of the label that handled merchandise for their roster of artists. My second stint in marketing was with Redcats, USA. They owned several fashion catalogs including La Redoute, Chadwick's of Boston, Lane Bryant, Jessica London, Big & Tall for Men and Brylane Home. The one thing these jobs taught me was that it was imperative to market to the right audience and have the right products to do it. So, today's episode will cover a few tips on how you can get started and also discuss: -How to put together a marketing calendar -Why using a daily planner is key to your success. Here's a free planner you can download to get started 7 Day Daily Planner -What you should look to do in your business every day of every year. -How to begin building your email list and why it's important. -Why you should add more video to your marketing calendar and more. So grab your favorite drink, whether it's a green tea, latte or a cappuccino and enjoy. Happy Marketing!! This was my first visit to Copenhagen when the radio and television production were in two separate houses in the downtown area of the city. Radiohuset (literally "Radio House") was located on Rosenørns Allé in , . Vacated by DR when was inaugurated in 2006, the buildings now house the as well as the Museum of Music. On my visit to DR we went to a tiny room where a Revox tape-recorder on a time-switch was playing out the shortwave service of Radio Denmark. But there had been grander times. I also heard the story of DX Window, one of the world's first DX programmes which had more of a style of the off shore pirate stations. There was talk of working together with the Norwegians to make a Scandinavian external service. But when this was recorded, it was simply an idea.

Part of an extended broadcast from Thameside Radio 90.2 with Sarah taking calls. It’s so busy that we even get to hear Sarah answering the phone on air with a call from Howard for Dave, Ian Lawrence and Bernie. At this point Thameside Radio had installed a permanent transmitter in Trellick Tower and set up a live Band III link so could broadcast as long as they wanted. (Band III used to be home to low quality 405 line TV but there were a lot of clear channels. It’s now used for DAB.)The phone lines are very busy with an awful lot of dedications. Nic sent us this eerie "found sound" that came with a 1970's Revox reel to reel recorder that his neighbor was throwing away after a yard sale back in 2002. Unfortunately, he doesn't know the spooky guy on the tape, nor does he know Sandy. But hopefully she's either kicked her habit ... or at least ditched this scary friend."I have always been attracted to found sounds, the kinds of things you find in thrift shops with the LPs. When I heard this, I knew I had to share it with others that have this interest. It's kind of voyeuristic in a way." Nic's a video producer who's been rediscovering the joys of audio.
