Hans Wurman, “Overture Miniature” from Electric Nutcracker (1976 Ovation). This Austrian composer made several remarkable, classically influenced Moog Modular albums from 1969 to 1976. This was one of his last big Moog projects and is difficult to find. 2:54 02:54 04:32 2. Hans Wurman, “Danse De La Fee-Dragee ( Sugar Plum Fairy)” from Electric Nutcracker (1976 Ovation). Moog Modular synthesizer, Hans Wurman. 1:33 01:33 07:24 3. Hans Wurman, “Danse Des Mirlitons (Flutes)” from Electric Nutcracker (1976 Ovation). This is reminiscent of Hooked on Classics as the entire album seems to be woven together by a drum machine beat. This is played on organ. Seems a little late for disco. 03:10 37:30 13. Denny Hinman, “Christmas in July” from Plays The Yamaha Electone E-70 (1980 Yamaha). Denny Hinman plays the Yamaha Electone E-70. A release by Yamaha. 01:45 40:36 14. This is a special addition to the Merry Moog podcast. I found what is likely a one-of-a-disc private pressing by Frank Collett using the Moog Modular Synthesizer. This 45 RPM disc was recorded at Finetone Recording Studio in New York City and is inscribed with the hand-written message, “To John & Loretta: Merry XMAS. Composed and arranged by Frank Collett” This appears to be disc made of metal with a vinyl coating. One side includes his rendition of Bach's “Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring” plus a short tune called “Little Joey” (see below). The flip side contains the same recording of “Little Joey.” Dated December 22, 1970. Clearly made using a Moog Modular Synthesizer. Collett (1941-2016) was a noted session pianist and sometimes led and recorded with his own trio. He was raised in New York. In 1968 he was accompanist to Sarah Vaughan. The following year he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. He became the house pianist, with the orchestra in the main showroom of the International Hotel (which became the Las Vegas Hilton). It was during this period that he made this recording in NY. 01:57 49:44 17. Frank Collett, “Little Joey” (1970 Privately Made Release). Frank Collett using the Moog Modular Synthesizer. From a 45 RPM disc recorded at Finetone Recording Studio in New York City (see above). Dated December 22, 1970. Clearly made using a Moog Modular Synthesizer. Collett (1941-2016) was a noted session pianist and sometimes led and recorded with his own trio. Moog Modular Synthesiser, Frank Collett. Whose Moog Synthesizer did he use to make this recording? I can only speculate and guess that he made the recording at the studio of Gerson Kingsley in New York. 01:56 51:40 18. Romantic Synthesizer, “Oh Tannenbaum” from Christmas Memories (1983 Dureco Benelux). French-Dutch album. Arranged, produced, synthesizers by Gerto Heupink, Robert Pot. 02:53 53:34 19. Keiko Ohta (Ota), “Here Comes Santa Claus” from Electone X'Mas Present (1975 Canyon). Yamaha Electone GX-707 (GX-1), arranged by Keiko Ohta. Ohta was a female Electone star from Japan. The GX-1 was an early polyphonic synthesizer and a new branch of the Yamaha Electone family tree. 02:43 56:24 20. Keiko Ohta (Ota), “Blue Christmas” from Electone X'Mas Present (1975 Canyon). Yamaha Electone GX-707 (GX-1), arranged by Keiko Ohta. Japan. Yes, the song originally made famous by Elvis Presley. Ohta was a female Electone star from Japan. The GX-1 was an early polyphonic synthesizer and a new branch of the Yamaha Electone family tree. 04:11 59:06 21. Paul Haig, “Scottish Christmas” from Chantons Noël - Ghosts Of Christmas Past (1981 Les Disques Du Crépuscule). From a compilation album of Christmas-related tunes. Scottish songwriter, musician and singer. 02:46 01:03:16 22. Les Cousins Dangereux, “What Child Is This” from Gotta Groove Records 2012 (2012 Gotta Groove Records). Holiday album with various artists. Les Cousins Dangereux is Mr. Tim Thornton. 01:59 01:06:00 23. Joy Electric, “Angels We Have Heard on High” from The Magic Of Christmas (2003 Tooth & Nail Records). Joy Electric is Ronnie Martin from Ohio. American synthesizer-pop musician. Among his many releases is this crafty Christmas album. 01:48 01:07:58 24. Koichi Oki, “Jingle Bells” from The Man From Yukiguni (1975 TIM/RS). Japan. Koichi Oki's Christmas album performed solely by his Yamaha Electone E-3. “Yukiguni” means snowland. Oki was a hugely popular Electone artist in Japan. 01:50 01:09:46 25. Koichi Oki, “Winter Wonderland” from The Man From Yukiguni (1975 TIM/RS). Japan. Koichi Oki's Christmas album performed solely by his Yamaha Electone E-3. “Yukiguni” means snowland. Oki was a hugely popular Electone artist in Japan. 02:18 01:11:34 26. Edhels, “Oriental Christmas” from Oriental Christmas (1985 Cabana Music). Recorded in France. Drums, Percussion, Keyboards, Jacky Rosati; Guitar, Jean Louis Suzzoni; Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Composed by, Marc Ceccotti; Keyboards, Noël Damon. I was sent this as a promotional album back in 1985 with a kind little note from the artists. Sorry it took me so long to put the Christmas-related track in my podcast. This is great example of synth-pop from France in the 1980s. 04:22 01:13:52 27. Bob Wehrman, John Bezjian and Dusty Wakeman, “Joy to the World” from Christmas Becomes Electric (1984 Tropical Records). Produced in L.A., a collection of pre-fab synthesizer classics. Not the same record of the same title as Douglas Leedy. 02:40 01:18:12 28. Bob Wehrman, John Bezjian and Dusty Wakeman, “Ring Christmas Bells” from Christmas Becomes Electric (1984 Tropical Records). Produced in L.A., a collection of pre-fab synthesizer classics. Not the same record of the same title as Douglas Leedy. 01:46 01:20:50 29. Romantic Synthesizer, “So This is Christmas” from Christmas Memories (1983 Dureco Benelux). French-Dutch album. Arranged, produced, synthesizers by Gerto Heupink, Robert Pot. We don't often hear an instrumental rendition of this Lennon and Ono X-mas tune. 03:22 01:22:34 30. Swinging Buildings, “Praying For A Cheaper Christmas” from Chantons Noël - Ghosts Of Christmas Past (1981 Les Disques Du Crépuscule). From a compilation album of Christmas-related tunes. This group was once rumored to be New Order in disguise. But no, they were in fact The Bowling Balls in disguise. 03:07 01:25:54 31. Bernie Krause, Philip Aaberg, “Feliz Navidad” from A Wild Christmas (1994 Etherean Music ). This delightful cassette is from Bernie Krause, known for his Moog explorations with Paul Beaver back in the day. All animal and ambient sounds recorded on location worldwide by Bernie Krause with the exception of the fish (courtesy of U.S. Navy). Animal samples, Bernie Krause and Phil Aaberg. Arrangements, new materials, all keyboards (Kurzweil 2000/Emulator III) Phil Aaberg. Percussion on Feliz Navidad performed by Ben Leinbach. 5:37 05:37 01:28:58 32. Vocals, Arthur Boller, Donald Oriolo, Jr., Dori Greenberg, Ivy Alexenburg, Jake Yeston, Jessica Taylor, Marney Alexenburg, Ricky Haayen, Roddy McBrien, Russell Poses, Scot Randell, Stacy Greenberg; Keyboards, Derek Smith, Harold Wheeler, Pat Rebillot; Sound Effects (R2D2), Ben Burtt. The whole Star Wars crew seems to have a part in this holiday album. I wanted to highlight a track featuring the melodious electronic beeping of R2D2. 03:33 01:34:34 Opening background music: Sounds Of Broadcasting 1, “Christmas Logos” from Sounds Of Broadcasting #6088 (1975? William B. Tanner Company, Inc.). Broadcast library track produced for the holidays. Produced using a Moog Modular Synthesizer. Notice how the melody imitates a familiar tune without ever hitting the same notes. A copyright thing. Another name of this track might as well be, “It's Beginning to Sound A Lot Like Christmas.” Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Tijuana Christmas” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). USA. Moog Modular Synthesizer. Don Voegeli, “Chanukah” from Holiday & Seasonal Music (1977 EMI). USA. Produced at the Electrosonic Studio of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Visual design by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. A few songs from Pacific, the album we're discussing today, have made it onto city pop playlists and algorithms on all types of streaming services. It might sound a little loungier, a little jazzier than what you might expect from a city pop album, but the names in the credits should be familiar to any city pop fan. Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Tatsuro Yamashita are responsible for this record and it would go on to influence the sound of city pop and genre beyond for years to come.We sit down with indie-pop duo Pearl & the Oysters to talk about the plentiful homages and quotes on this album, the influence of this record on their sound, and the incredible musicianship on display.Check out our Spotify playlist of as many songs as we can find on there! As a tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto on the first anniversary of his passing, Caro C talks to Richard Barbieri, Natalie Beridze and Carsten Nicolai, aka Alva Noto, three musicians who were fortunate enough to collaborate with him. Here, they share some insights into his mindset and methodologies. Chapters00:00 - Introduction01:44 - Richard Barbieri09:04 - Natalie Beridze 19:45 - Carsten Nicolai / Alva Noto Ryuichi Sakamoto BiogRyuichi Sakamoto was a multi award-winning keyboardist, songwriter, composer and producer who along with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, became pioneers of the electronic music genre in Honsono's band Yellow Magic Orchestra.Prior to his success with the band, Sakamoto earned a B.A. in music composition and worked as a session musician and producer. Alongside his success with the band, he continued his solo work, releasing solo albums and collaborations, experimenting with various genres and fusing traditional with electronic. This work led to him scoring more than 30 films throughout his career, his most famous being Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence and The Last Emperor. In his later career he composed a multimedia opera, sampled a glass building for use in one of his works and traveled to the Arctic to record the sound of melting snow.Richard Barbieri BiogHailing from London, Richard joined the British band Japan in 1975 and saw huge success around the world until they split in 1982. He continued to work with David Sylvian, as well as Sylvian's brother, Steve Jansen on separate projects. He reunited with Sylvian, Jansen and bass player Mick Karn for the Rain Tree Crow project and continued to play with Steve & Mick as part of ‘JBK'. In the early 1990s, the three of them teamed up with Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson as part of No-Man and it was here that Barbieri and Wilson would begin their long musical association. Porcupine Tree had initially been a Wilson solo project but he recruited Richard in 1993 and over the next 17 years, became one of the shining lights of the neo-prog / pop scene, embracing a more heavy style as the years went on. Reuniting in 2021, they released the first Porcupine Tree album in 12 years with 2022's ‘Closure/ Continuation', a critically acclaimed return to form. Richard has a large body of solo work which he started to release in 2005 and still does to this day.http://www.richardbarbieri.co.uk/Natalie Beridze BiogNatalie Beridze is a Georgian music composer and songwriter. Since 2003 Natalie has been performing live concerts worldwide, and has been known as the first female electronic music artist from Georgia. From 2002-2008 she lived in Cologne and produced music under the artist name TBA. She's released music in Europe on Max.E, Monika Enterprise, CMYK, Laboratory Instinct, CES Records DADO records, Apollo Records Chainmusic, CES Records and ROOM40.In addition to her solo projects, Beridze has collaborated with artists such as Thomas Brinkmann, AGF (Antye Greie), Gudrun Gut, Joerg Follert, Marcus Schmickler, Nika Machaidze aka Nikakoi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Gacha Bakradze, Alex Kordzaia, Annika Henderson, Antye Greie-Fuchs, Barbara Morgenstern, Beate Bartel, Danielle De Picciotto, Gudrun Bredemann, Lucrecia Dalt, Merja Kokkonen, Mommo G, Natalie Beridze, Pilocka Krach, Sonae. Her recent compositions for piano, keyboard, soprano and tape are part of the ongoing program of Zurich based KioskEnsemble.Beridze, alongside Nika Machaidze teaches songwriting and music production at CES (creative education studio).https://natalieberidzetba.bandcamp.com/Carsten Nicolai / Alva Noto BiogUnder the pseudonym Alva Noto, Carsten Nicolai is one of the best-known representatives of contemporary electronic music. Her self-produced fourth album 'Electric Mountain' is out now. Described as a "one-woman electronic avalanche" (BBC), Caro started making music thanks to being laid up whilst living in a double decker bus and listening to the likes of Warp Records in the late 1990's. Around 2010 I became somewhat obsessed with Japanese pop and ambient music of the 1980s - in particular the Yellow Magic Orchestra, the solo records of the members of the group: Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi and music by Akiko Yano, Yasuaki Shimizu and Hiroshi Yoshimura amongst many others. Last year I discovered that this was an enthusiasm shared with architectural historian, and very occasional pop music writer, Owen Hartherley who has since written an article partially on the topic: https://www.jencksfoundation.org/explore/text/japan-at-number-one-ryuichi-sakamoto-s-riot-in-lagos Although much of the episode is on the music itself, we also touch on the politics - particularly how these artists were influenced by and reacting to the culture of the 1960s New Left, during the extraordinary economic boom of the 1980s, and how some of these musicians reintegrated the memory of 20th century Japanese imperialism in Asia into their music. If you'd like to explore some of the music we discuss in the episode you can find an accompanying playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1eM8f2mq7vJYtYuTDq2EKW?si=7dd8d970fb8d4ad2 As well as tracks from the 80s, the playlist also includes some records from the folk rock era of the 1970s, as well as from Vaporwave and Future Funk genres - both of which were influenced by much of the 1980s work that Owen and I discuss. Unfortunately, there are plenty of fantastic records from this era that aren't currently available on the streaming services - including Akiko Yano's best work (especially the album Tadaima) Paradise of Replica by After Dinner, Ichiko Hashimoto's Beauty album, Miho Fujiwara's Heartbeat, Untotooku by Chiemi Manabe and the soundtracks to the animated films Akira and the Wings of Honnêamise amongst others. Do check those out too if you can - many of them are available on YouTube or to purchase from Bandcamp and other such outlets. So ging es Thomas mit THEY SAY NOTHING STAYS THE SAME.

Tokyo is the capital of Japan, with a population of 13 million people, it is known as a place where the ultra modern and futuristic sits comfortably next to ancient tradition. Today we hear some legendary japanese music that broke new ground when it was released in the 1970s and 1980s as well as some modern pop music and electronic music by young artists that are active in Tokyo today. When you think of Tokyo, images of neon lights, futuristic technology, and almost science fiction-esque environments might be the first thing that comes into some peoples heads and it's true that Tokyo has for a long time been a center of technological innovation. And this is particularly true when it comes to music technology. In fact some of the most famous brands of electronic music instrumentation come from Japan including the likes of Korg, Roland and Yamaha and a lot of the most well known and recognised sounds in electronic music and modern pop come from drum machines and synthesizers that were developed by these companies in Japan. It should be no surprise then that one of the most influential and pioneering bands in the history of electronic music comes from Tokyo. In the late 1970s the Yellow Magic Orchestra a futuristic boyband formed of musicians Haruomi Hosono, Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto emerged onto the scene with a groundbreaking form of electronic pop music powered by drum machines and synthesizers that would go on to immortalize them as important pioneers of electronic music second only to the likes of Kraftwerk who were doing similar things in Europe at the same time. Each of the members of YMO would go on to become hugely important figures in the world of electronic and experimental music. Ryuichi Sakamoto's Riot in Lagos is one of the first popular music recordings that features a Roland 808 Drum machine and that many people say can be considered to be the first example of Electro Music which would become huge in the development of hip hop a few years later in the United States thanks to music by the likes of Afrika bambaata and Hashim. Where Ryuichi Sakomoto is widely regarded for the influence he has had on avant garde electronic and film music. Haruomi Hosono is known as one of the most influential musicians in the history of Japanese Pop music in fact he is credited with shaping the sound of japanese pop music for decades. J pop is the term used to describe modern day popular Japanese Pop Music. Like K pop in Korea and Canto Pop in Hong Kong it's the type of music that fills stadiums with adoring young fans and which blends japanese lyrics and melodies with for standardised forms of western pop music. It has changed a lot since the 1960s when J-pop is supposed to have been birthed. Namie Amuro is an artist that has been called the Madona of J pop. She was active on the J pop scene between 1992 and 2018. This episode was quite focused on electronic music and electronic pop music made with synthesizers and Drum machines which in many ways is very fitting as Japan is a hub for the production of those kinds of instruments but Japan also has an amazing Psych Rock history, there's the whole world of J-pop which we briefly skimmed over today as well as plenty of other kinds of music from the country. As always this is just a snap shot and it's worth going to do a bit more digging of your own if you liked any of what you heard here.
Hello Tool Crate Family-Doing something special and new for this week...debuting the Selector Pick. Showcasing one artist / song that is truly amazing and has stood the test of time. This week: the Yellow Magic Orchestra - Firecracker (1978)Thank you Ryuichi Sakamoto (rest in heaven) and his band mates Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi.
Pop, techno, soul, world music, classique...
Camly started making tofu by hand 30 years ago. Soon after arriving in Australia, she noticed many Asian grocers in her area weren't offering Vietnamese-style tofu (the kind that gets its uniquely soft texture from being hand-pressed). Here's an interview I'm including for the following quote:‘[Haruomi Hosono's] expression about this old musician was, “This old guy plays the bass like cutting tofu.” You must be very gentle cutting tofu, otherwise you can damage it, break it. Matt presents his curated selection of the best top 40 power-pop that 1999 had to offer - the perfect compliment to nu-metal, its kindred spirit. Connecting with nature, European cafe vibes, and 17th century counterpoint. Jared Mattson (Mattson 2, Jared Mattson) "The Mattson 2's recent output has found them (jazz twins Jared and Jonathan Mattson) evoking the lush and carefree soundscapes of Japanese city pop. Their 2018 release Vaults of Eternity: Japan was full of loving reinterpretations of songs by artists like Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and while their latest LP Paradise doesn't indulge in sonic excess, it does capture that breezy, sun-filled vibe. It charted Billboard at #1 Contemp. Jazz, #2 Jazz, #20 Alternative and landed features in the Washington Post and Pitchfork. Amongst collabs w/ Ray Barbee, Tommy Guerrero, Farmer Dave (of Kurt Vile), and Money Mark (of Beastie Boys), they released Star Stuff in 2017 with Chaz Bear (FKA Chaz Bundick, AKA Toro Y Moi) — also #1 on Billboard contemp. jazz charts — and reinterpreted Coltrane's legendary A Love Supreme which Ashely Kahn (author of A Love Supreme: The Creation of John Coltrane's Classic Album, 2002) says “there is a depth of sincerity and reverence in what the Mattson's are doing that is unquestionable.”" Excerpt from http://www.mattson2.com/about Jared Mattson: Bandcamp: https://jaredmattson.bandcamp.com/album/peanut Instagram: @jaredmattsonmusic Website: https://linktr.ee/jaredmattsonmusic?fbclid=PAAaaB0rcoWAj8z0rhXG2BS79ib2vTe-DRLfR_myJwv9Dyk4R6eIqRAQkpOR8 Merch: https://store.carparkrecords.com/products/730586-chi17-jared-mattson-peanut Mattson 2: Bandcamp: https://themattson2.bandcamp.com Instagram: @themattson2 Website: http://www.mattson2.com Merch: http://www.mattson2.com/store The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

Vertigogo (Opening Theme) - Combustible Edison Misirlou - Martin Denny Coronation - Martin Denny La Pampa Y La Puna - Martin Denny Poinciana - Arthur Lyman Anna - Arthur Lyman Quiet Village - Les Baxter Jungalero - Les Baxter Disappeared (2021 Mix) - Haruomi Hosono and Miharu Koshi Miniskirt - Combustible Edison feat. Juan García Esquivel 20th Century - Combustible Edison Carnival of Souls - Combustible Edison This episode features a clip of Coleman Hughes from his podcast Conversations with Coleman where in his discussion with Jonathan Haidt he discusses the pros and cons of the social fragmentation allowed by the internet. Seems like most people I know focus only on the benefits or the downsides, but to me it seems worth observing both.
This week, we're excited to present a synth-laden, 80s-inspired mix by special guest @simfossil: “The theme of this mix is a certain new age sound and flavor from 80s recordings. I traced this sound through the work of many Japanese artists (hence the Shibas on the cover) and I would say this became the backbone of the mix: music by the legendary Haruomi Hosono, Yuji Toriyama and many more. The vibe is unique and experimental, a new age-y, jazz-rock-y type of deal. I've been quite inspired for a long time by the character and creativity of this era; something about the guitar and instrumentation gives it that special touch. Personally, as a producer, I'm a big fan of Yamaha instruments, in particular the DX7, which I've come to associate with this time in music. Though Japanese artists are the central thread, I've made a kind of fusion of many different things that to me capture this special flavor.”

Ved. In honor of our recent reissues of prolific musician and producer Haruomi Hosono's essential albums, we teamed up with dublab and In Sheep's Clothing's, a hi-fi bar in downtown Los Angeles, for a night of celebration. Special guest Kuni Murai — famed producer, composer and founder of Alfa Records, joined dublab's Mark “Frosty” McNeill for a chat about his decades-long working relationship with Hosono, from his days as a session player to his stratospheric success with Yellow Magic Orchestra and beyond. Please note, we have removed the music sections due to right's issues. Photo: Kuni Murai at his Alfa Records office, located directly below the label's famed Studio A in Shibaura, Tokyo.

《灭茶苦茶》网址:https://miechakucha.com English summary: From 1976 to 1979, the female idol group Pink Lady enjoyed a level of stardom that dwarfs even AKB48 in the 21st century. Nevertheless, not only did they fail in the US market back then, they remain largely neglected in the recent rediscovery of late-1970s and early-1980s Japanese popular music, whereas their contemporaries like Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and YMO have sparked renewed interest among the new generation of listeners outside Japan. 相关链接 Pink Lady Mie 未唯的刹那图鉴 YouTube 上的 Pink Lady and Jeff 仙波清彦 梅津和时 仙波清彦改编的「海滩上的辛巴德」在 Pink Lady Night 演出视频(+「Good Vibrations」) 梅津和时二零一六年的 Cabaret 大往年会上的 Mie 未唯(「透明人间」+「In the Court of the Crimson King」) Pink Lady《America!
