This week, we went out to the Firehouse backyard and dug up a time capsule from the decade when your two humble hosts met and decided to form their first band together: the sometimes amazing, sometimes confusing 1990s. The capsule revealed a collection of tunes spanning rock, punk, and metal. Robert was forced to test his endurance of the macabre and provided feedback that only Captain Content could. And all for your listening pleasure! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or collection of tunes of rock, punk, and metal. This week, we talk exclusively about the 1990s and all things: grunge, alternative, goth, punk, hard rock, and everything in between. We hope that we turn you on to something new. Songs this week include: Sugartooth – “Frisbee” from The Sounds Of Solid (1996) The Mission U.K. – “Deliverance” from Carved In Sand (1990) Poster Children – “Junior Citizen” from Junior Citizen (1995) The Men – “Chuch Of Logic, Sin, & Love” from The Men (1992) Thee Hypnotics - “Heavy Liquid” from The Very Crystal Speed Machine (1993) Mind Over Four – “Funny Pocket” from Halfway Down (1993) Overwhelming Colorfast – “Arrows” from Overwhelming Colorfast (1992) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts! Flea. Having spent his early years in London, Mark Ronson grew up in Manhattan, began working as a DJ as a teenager and quickly made a name for himself on the New York club scene of the 1990s. He moved into music production and, in 2006, co-wrote and co-produced the Amy Winehouse album Back To Black. The record won five Grammys and Mark Ronson himself scooped the Producer of the Year Award. Since then, he has released five solo albums and worked with some of the most successful names in pop including Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, Queens Of The Stone Age and Paul McCartney. The winner of ten Grammys and two Brits, he added an Academy Award to his list of accolades in 2018 as co-writer of the song Shallow from the film A Star Is Born. He was also Oscar nominated for his work as executive producer, composer and songwriter for the soundtrack to the Barbie movie. More recently he has written a book called Night People, a memoir about his time as a DJ in 90s New York. Mark Ronson tells John Wilson about the influence of his music-loving parents, who often threw parties at their north London home when he was a child. He talks about the influence of his stepfather Mick Jones, songwriter, guitarist and producer of the 80s rock band Foreigner, who allowed Mark to experiment with equipment in his home studio in New York and encouraged his early interest in production. He remembers how hearing the 1992 track They Reminisce Over You by Pete Rock and CL Smooth led him to pursue a career as a club DJ and become renowned for the diverse range of music he played in clubs - from soul and hip-hop to classic rock - an eclectic approach which later informed his work as a producer. Mark Ronson also recalls first meeting Amy Winehouse and how they wrote and recorded the songs for her Back To Black album. Producer: Edwina Pitman

In this episode we chat with Jeff Grant, frontman of Seattle-based band Sharkeologist (and its lead guitarist, CBM Podcast co-host Aaron Stayman). Sharkeologist is a hard rock band that weaves harsh guitars, cutting synths, huge beats, and a pop-rock hooks into songs that hit hard and get stuck in your head. They have drawn comparisons to Weezer, The Cars, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Jimmy Eat World. The band recently released its second (self-titled) album. www.craftbrewedmusic.com www.sharkeologist.com

In November 1973, Rolling Stone record reviewer Stephen Davis infamously slagged Elton John's double album 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', calling it - among other things: "a big fruity pie that simply doesn't bake". Ahem. Now often regarded as Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin's magnum opus, returning guest and music-biz veteran Ralph Cavallaro joins us as we unpack the record that recently ranked number 112 on Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Go figure. Songs discussed in this episode: Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding (Live from Madison Square Garden, 1974), Crocodile Rock, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Tiny Dancer, Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, Candle In The Wind 1997, Candle In The Wind, Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, This Song Has No Title, Grey Seal (1970 B-Side), Grey Seal, Jamaica Jerk-Off - Elton John; D'yer Mak'er - Led Zeppelin; I've Seen That Movie Too, Sweet Painted Lady, The Ballad Of Danny Bailey, All The Girls Love Alice, Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting - Elton John; Can't You Hear Me Knocking - The Rolling Stones; Harmony - Elton John; Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Elton John cover) - Queens Of The Stone Age
Can we actually separate the art from the artist? Well, if you're willing to contort yourself around some pretty terrible behavior, the art you are separating from the artists involved better be worth it. Only the best of the best can get away with being the worst of the worst and have us still wanting to enjoy their art. From bleak to dark, this list and the stories involved might make the squeamish squeam - fair warning! Who else to help us navigate these treacherous waters than our old dear friends from Milwaukee, Chris Van Gompel, DJ Hostettler and Dixie Jacobs. Send us a textAt 16, Miki Hellerbach got his first job bussing tables at Clementine, a cozy BYOB restaurant in Baltimore. He was the youngest on staff, but the older servers took him under their wing and made him feel like part of the crew. One night, Autopilot by Queens of the Stone Age came on over the speakers—he hadn't heard it before, but it stuck. That track became linked to the early days of figuring out who he was.It was also where his love of food began. We talk about first jobs, mentorship, discovering new music by accident, and how that one restaurant helped shape his path—as a journalist, music writer, and host of Convo at the Spot.
What does it take to rise from cleaning studios to shaping some of the most iconic records of our time? Trina Shoemaker's story is not just about breaking into the music industry—it's about breaking through it. As the first woman to win a Grammy for Best Engineered Album, Trina paved the way for a generation of female producers and engineers, and she brings her powerful voice and razor-sharp insight to this inspiring and unfiltered conversation. In this episode, Trina shares how she went from mopping floors at Capitol Records to earning Grammy wins for her work with artists like Sheryl Crow and Emmylou Harris. She tells the behind-the-scenes stories of working on Wrecking Ball and how that album helped define the sound of Americana. We explore her years in London learning the art of engineering, her move to New Orleans to join the legendary Kingsway Studio, and the deep musical and personal lessons she learned along the way. Trina also pulls back the curtain on the realities of being a woman in a male-dominated field—how she navigated the industry, demanded respect, and held true to her belief in capturing raw, honest performances. She discusses her approach to vocal production, why she avoids auto-tune, and how crafting backing vocals is one of her secret weapons. Beyond her life in the studio, Trina opens up about her love of writing and her dream of publishing a novel and having actor Will Patton narrate the audiobook. Whether you're a seasoned engineer or just starting out, this episode offers a powerful reminder: authenticity, persistence, and a deep respect for the artist's process will always rise above the noise. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Trina Shoemaker, who was born in 1965 and raised in Joliet, IL, southwest of Chicago. Over the past three-and-a-half decades, she has produced, recorded and mixed hundreds of records. A four-time Grammy® Award winner and six-time nominee, she is the first woman to win the Grammy® for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. Her credits run the gamut from Queens Of The Stone Age, Rodney Crowell, Charley Crockett and Iggy Pop to Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile and Tanya Tucker. Although audio engineering is a passion, writing songs and playing musical instruments are not. Instead, while her ears are busy in the studio recording music, her imagination is busy creating characters, narratives, plotlines and dialogues as she travels through the hidden workings of songs. These stories have culminated in the creation of her debut novel, Bury Me Alive In Your Sugar. Trina lives on Mobile Bay in Fairhope, Alabama, with her husband, singer-songwriter Grayson Capps. Anyone can scream, but only a few deliver gravel, grit & glory! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Our appreciation, this week, of rough and textured singing extends to all of the genres that we love. Kevin never realized how much this style of vocalizing had an impact on him until putting this whole thing together. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!Songs this week include:Metal Church – “Ton Of Bricks” from The Dark (1986)Hot Water Music – “Trademark” from Fuel For The Hate Game (1997)Love/Hate – “Blackout In The Red Room” from Blackout In The Red Room (1990)The Baboon Show – “Gold” from God Bless You All (2022)Grave Digger – “Hymn Of The Damned” from The Living Dead (2018)The Distillers – “Die On A Rope” from Coral Fang (2003)Asomvel – “Born To Rock ‘n' Roll” from Born To Rock ‘n' Roll(2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
Eric Valentine's journey into music started with a $50 drum set from a garage sale and drum lessons at age nine. By 12, he was experimenting with home recordings, and by high school, he had a 4-track recorder and was recording local musicians. At 17, he and a friend launched a 16-track studio in a garage, advertising $10 per hour for recording sessions—marking the start of his professional career. His big break came when his band, T-Ride, signed with Hollywood Records under the condition that he produce and engineer their album. Instead of renting an expensive studio, he upgraded their own space, investing in high-end gear. Though the band didn't achieve major success, it led Eric to focus on producing local artists. Over the next few years, he worked with rapper Paris, recorded Joe Satriani, and ultimately helped launch the careers of Smash Mouth and Third Eye Blind. He co-produced Third Eye Blind's debut album and took a DIY approach with Smash Mouth, finishing their album before they even had a deal—leading to their signing with Interscope just days after mastering. With multiple hit records under his belt, Eric relocated from the Bay Area to Los Angeles, closing his legendary “H.O.S.” Studios to establish Barefoot Recording. There, he produced major albums for Queens of the Stone Age, Good Charlotte, Taking Back Sunday, Maroon 5, Slash, and Gwen Stefani, accumulating nearly 65 million album sales worldwide. In 2010, he expanded into recording equipment design, launching Undertone Audio to create high-end studio gear, including a Class A console with a revolutionary EQ.Most recently, Eric moved his studio setup to Vermont, where he spent four years building a state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot recording facility. Now settled in, he's focusing on his latest passion: The Audionaut Institute, an educational platform where audio enthusiasts can explore the art of recording and production.IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN:Learning on your own vs. having a mentorWorking with Queens Of The Stone Age, Good Charlotte, and Third Eye BlindEstablishing the vision of a projectHow he gets big, natural-sounding drumsUsing minimal micing techniquesHow to tune drums to the key of a songThe beauty of imperfectionArranging your tracks so they practically EQ themselvesMaking extreme mix movesCreating movement, energy, and width in a mixTips for getting the low-end rightHis delay trick for controlling low-end headroomTo learn more about Eric visit: https://www.audionautinstitute.com/mrwevLooking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes?Check out my coaching program Amplitude and apply to join:https://masteryourmix.com/amplitude/ Want additional help with your music productions? For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit: https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint: https://masteryourmix.com/blueprint/ Get your copy of my Amazon #1 bestselling books:The Recording Mindset: A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating Pro Recordings From Your Home Studio: https://therecordingmindset.com The Mixing Mindset: The Step-By-Step Formula For Creating Professional Rock Mixes From Your Home Studio:

Josh Ostrander is back with a new Mondo Cozmo album and I'm stoked to share this amazing interview with all of you! His project is named for his dog, Cozmo, who recently passed away, and the new album, “It's PRINCIPAL,” is simply outstanding — a beautiful alt-rock album with a driving vibe and a gripping and cohesive throughline. Josh has a great attitude and an endearing sense of humor and I get into it all with him. We talk about his life philosophy: a combination of gratitude, self-acceptance and the belief that life is a series of “a million little miracles.” Josh's humor and emotional awareness will lift you up; it did for me… and I'm all about that.
