Send me a messageIn this episode of Inside The Mix, mastering engineer Ian Shepherd demystifies loudness metrics and debunks common mastering misconceptions while offering practical advice for producers looking to improve their masters without chasing arbitrary targets. Ian explains the role of LUFS in mastering, why normalization matters, and how focusing on musicality and dynamics leads to better results than simply hitting a loudness target. What You'll Learn: • LUFS measurements explained – momentary, short-term, and integrated loudness • How many LUFS should my master be? Understanding the balance between dynamics and loudness • The truth about LUFS for Spotify – why 83% of users never change loudness normalization settings • What does LUFS stand for? And why it's just one piece of the mastering puzzle • How normalization impacts your music across different streaming platforms • The role of audio normalization in creating a consistent listening experience • Why AI mastering struggles to match the emotional intent of human engineers • Spotify's approach to loudness and what it means for your masters • Internal dynamics – how balancing different sections of your song enhances clarity and impact • The mastering feedback loop – why collaboration between engineers and artists is keyIf you want your music to stand out in today's Spotify-dominated landscape, don't obsess over loudness numbers. Instead, focus on musicality, dynamics, and emotional impact. Test how your tracks sound at normalized streaming levels, and let the music, not the meters, drive your mastering decisions.Links mentioned in this episode:Listen to the Mastering Show PodcastMastering Engineer Reacts to 8 Pro Mixes of the Same SongHigher LUFS - do they REALLY always sound louder?YouTube ruined all my videos - UNLESS you disable this setting...Loudness Penalty: AnalyzePerception AB Support the showBook a FREE 20-minute Producer Potential Discovery Call Follow Marc Matthews' Socials:Instagram | YouTube | Synth Music Mastering Thanks for listening!!

Episode 233 features Justin Sances - a highly regarded and talented audio engineer that focuses in the dance music space. Some of you may know Justin or have worked with him directly, but he comes to the table with experience not only as an audio engineer, but previously as a DJ and Producer (a very dope one at that!) Justin is also the engineer for Hood Politics and does the final mix/master on 99% of the tracks we release. He plays a major part in ensuring that the label puts out the highest possible quality music at the end of the day. This interview breaks down his process while providing advice to producers in the studio for the first time or 1000th time. This aspect of music making is well-known but still under-appreciated and not talked about in the mainstream very much. I'm really glad we sat down and had this conversation in person because I found myself taking notes throughout this interview!

During our interview Howie talked about mastering at the beginning of hip hop, the tremendous volume of work that he does, why he thinks vinyl is a fad, why he creates both an analog and digital master, and so much more. I spoke with Howie via zoom from his home in Santa Monica. Cicely Balston won the 2023 Music Producer's Guild's Mastering Engineer of the Year Award, and when you hear the music she has mastered—and the smart, easygoing way she discusses it—you understand why. Working out of AIR Studios in London, Balston has applied her talents to the doom-punk band Witch Fever and David Bowie's back catalog, as well as some dynamite-sounding hip-hop reissues for the Vinyl Me, Please record club, including Eric B. & Rakim's Don't Sweat the Technique, Gravediggaz's 6 Feet Deep, and Madlib's Shades of Blue. How did this young British woman become an ace hip-hop masterer, and do those albums require a specific skill set? Are people too fixated on analog vs. digital? How did she become a mastering engineer anyway, and what's the most commonly misunderstood aspect of what she does? (Photo by Silvia Gin.)

Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Raelynn Janicke, a mastering engineer and the studio manager for Infrasonic Mastering, based in Nashville, TN. Before joining Infrasonic in 2019, Raelynn worked at Tommy's Tracks, where she fulfilled a variety of roles alongside owner Tommy Wiggins including mastering and archival. Raelynn has mastered and assisted on projects for The Shins, Kayla Hall, Nefesh Mountain, Talia Stewart, Big 50, and Eli Howard. Raelynn got her Bachelor's Degree in Applied Arts and Sciences, with Concentrations in Audio Engineering and Computer Science, from The Rochester Institute of Technology. Much like her career thus far, Raelynn's path to her degree was self-made. She was initially drawn to the practicality of a job in computer programming, but switched majors halfway through her program after assisting on a college a cappella record. From there, she discovered the school's modest audio program, created an individualized degree, and threw in minors in history and music technology, just to keep things interesting. Raelynn brings this level of enthusiasm and exploration to every project she works on at Infrasonic Mastering, both as manager and engineer. She describes herself on her website as a “Mastering Engineer Who Loves Tacos and Is Taller Than Danny Devito.” Thanks to F Reid Shippen for connecting us. Today we will talk about the tech meets art of mastering, running a busy multi room facility, Atmos immersive audio, and how AI in mastering could affect our future of music.
