On a rainy evening in 2014, firefighters responded to a blaze at Carmela Knight's home in the quiet suburb of Pickering. As neighbors watched in disbelief, Carmela's family rushed to the scene, only to learn that David Knight and their two sons were safe at hockey practice, but a body had been found inside the garage. In the days that followed, loved ones feared the worst. And as investigators began piecing together the events of that night, early clues raised troubling questions. David insisted he had nothing to do with what happened. He had an alibi. But suspicion grew, leading detectives into a long, complex search for the truth behind Carmela's death.Today's snacks: Reese's Filled Pretzels and Sanders Sugar Cookie White Chocolate Sea Salt CaramelsSupport us on PatreonSources:2014.09.18 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1221698725/ 2015.03.04 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1221961772/ 2015.09.17 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1223615585/ 2015.10.01 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1221947109/ 2018.01.25 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1223734635/ 2018.02.08 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1221766379/2018.02.10 https://www.newspapers.com/image/951333672/ 2018.02.15 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1221945294/ 2018.02.21 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1222349449/ 2018.10.18 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1222164602/ 2018.10.25 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1221962308/ 2018.11.01 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1221962107/ 2018.11.07 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1222056286/ 2018.11.14 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1223523035/ 2018.11.22 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1222165105/ 2018.12.12 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1223521209/ 2018.12.19 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1223525386/ 2018.12.20 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1223521535/ 2019.01.10 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1223734774/ 2019.01.16 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1223688855/ 2019.01.23 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1223612113/ 2019.01.24 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1221647442/ 2019.01.30 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1222164925/ 2019.02.13 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1223612222/ 2019.03.27 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1222163953/ Dateline S31E7, Fire & Ice https://thecinemaholic.com/carmela-knight-murder-how-did-she-die-who-killed-her/https://thecinemaholic.com/where-is-david-knights-mistress-jill-hartman-now/

UK consumers used to save very little — now they’re saving a lot, perhaps too much. Why? Kallum Pickering, Peel Hunt chief economist, joins host Merryn Somerset Webb to explain. He points to a “wealth shock”: when gilt yields surged in 2022, pension values fell sharply. At the same time, mortgage rates climbed and house prices stalled. This shift matters. It’s one reason the UK economy remains sluggish. But it’s not the only factor — our strained public finances and the sheer size of the state also play a role. Can it be fixed? Kallum thinks so. He shared his long-term ideas for turning things around — and even offered a few suggestions for Chancellor Rachel Reeves. Correction: At the end when Kallum discusses financing pensions, he refers to a policy that includes a one-year tax cut for young people at £2,000. That is incorrect. His calculations account for £2,000 cuts for years one and two for pensions, and £1,000 cut in healthcare. It starts for everyone at age 20 but anyone under 40 would get the chance to partake. Welcome to another episode of The Electropages Podcast, hosted by Robin Mitchell. Today's guest is Robert King, Technical Sales and Product Manager at Pickering Electronics. In this episode, Robert takes us inside the engineering behind Pickering's latest generation of ultra-compact reed relays, including the new 5x5 mm Series 125 devices. He explains how these relays achieve mechanical switching speeds up to 250 hertz, support billions of cold-switch operations, and deliver impressive power handling in an incredibly small footprint. The conversation explores why density matters for modern semiconductor test systems, how Pickering maintains isolation and low leakage in high-frequency environments, and what makes reed relays uniquely suited to RF, medical, and instrumentation applications. Robert also reveals the clever magnetic design that enables normally closed reed relays, how the team engineered two-pole configurations inside a 5x5 mm package, and why advanced shielding and integrated diodes are critical for today's high-density switching matrices. Watch to learn how Pickering is pushing the limits of relay design and enabling more compact, capable, and scalable automated test systems for the next generation of semiconductor and RF technologies.
With less than one more before the Supreme Court's oral argument in one of the most explosive cases of this term, Trump v. Slaughter, you're encouraged to join the Anchoring Truths Podcast for a discussion of this important case over whether the President remove any Senate-confirmed commissioner of an agency he no longer wishes to have serve in that federal agency. The constitutional question in the case concerns statutory removal protections for the Federal Trade Commission—previously upheld in the Court's landmark decision in Humphrey's Executor v. United States—and whether a federal court may prevent removal of a commissioner from public office. The stakes for this case are enormous for all three branches of the government, foremost though the executive. Is the power to remove an executive branch agency's commissioner vested solely in the President, as it is under what's known as the theory of the unitary executive? Or can Congress place conditions on removal that prevent such exercise of the executive's authority?Joining us to preview the oral argument is Mark Chenoweth of the New Civil Liberties Alliance. Mark is NCLA's President and Chief Legal Officer, and along with Margot Cleveland and Professor Philip Hamburger, the co-authors of an amicus brief in the case.Mark served as the first chief of staff to Congressman Mike Pompeo, as legal counsel to Commissioner Anne Northup at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, as an attorney advisor in the Office of Legal Policy at the U.S. Department of Justice, and as a law clerk to the Hon. Danny J. Boggs on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.Mark has worked in several different roles in the private sector as well. He began his legal career in D.C. as a regulatory associate at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering. He then returned to his home state of Kansas to serve as in-house counsel for Koch Industries. Most recently he spent over four years as general counsel of the Washington Legal Foundation.Learn more about NCLA.

In this episode of Livabl Launch, host Matthew Slutsky sits down with Hugh Heron, President of Heathwood Homes and a legendary figure in Canadian homebuilding. With over four decades in the industry and more than 20,000 homes built, Hugh offers candid insights on the current housing market, what's holding it back, and how both government and industry can work together to restore balance. Hugh explains why now is actually a great time to buy a home—with market softness creating rare opportunities for buyers—and warns that prices will inevitably rise again. Drawing from past downturns, he stresses the need for clear leadership, collaboration between all three levels of government, and streamlined policies that truly address affordability and housing supply. The conversation dives into common public misconceptions about development, such as who pays for infrastructure, and emphasizes the industry's role in job creation. Hugh reinforces his long-held philosophy that “the customer always comes first,” sharing how Heathwood maintains direct accessibility, personalized service, and a culture that prioritizes homeowner satisfaction before and after closing. He offers practical advice for buyers, from doing thorough builder research to understanding the protections of Ontario's new home warranty program. Comparing new builds to resale, he highlights quality assurance, warranty coverage, and energy-efficiency upgrades as key advantages. Hugh also discusses community building, from early investments in Pickering and Whitby to creating livable neighbourhoods with parks, trails, and green space before the first homes are built. On innovation, he reflects on being an early adopter of heat pumps in the 1980s and the ongoing push toward energy efficiency today. The episode closes with reflections on changing buyer expectations, the importance of consumer confidence, and why the Heathwood motto, “Home at Last,” remains as relevant as ever.

I'm very excited to share this week's episode and guest with you all. Today I'm talking with friend, film producer, author and grief educator-Lizzie Pickering. Lizzie and I met back in 2022 at the UK Commission on Bereavement and haven't left each others side since. Throughout the years, Lizzie has become a dear friend and someone I admire both personally and professionally. Lizzie's relationship with grief began when her son, Harry, died aged 6 and a half after being diagnosed with a life limiting and terminal illness when he was extremely little.Throughout those years and continuing to raise her family that consisted of her two surviving children, Lizzie knew that she wanted to walk towards her grief rather than away from it. In doing so, Lizzie has gathered an extreme wealth of knowledge and compassion that has gone on to support other bereaved parents and individuals in the masses. I feel so fortunate to walk alongside Lizzie in our lines of work and what she shares in our episode today, I think you'll see why.Lizzie and I discuss in this episode the various different but recurring themes we see in our work. We wanted to showcase how common and normal they really are to help you hopefully feel less alone and perhaps more comforted. Reading Lizzie's book 'When Grief Equals Love' is a must read. This teaching takes us through the biblical origins of the Sabbath, from Creation to the Ten Commandments, emphasizing that this day of rest is a gift from God for our benefit and betterment. As we reflect on this, we're encouraged to rediscover the practice of Sabbath in our own lives, not as a rigid rule, but as a life-giving rhythm that deepens our relationship with God and allows us to truly delight in His goodness.Landon Pickering is lead pastor of Trademark Church in Fort Worth Texas.Get more out of today's teaching by visiting our Church Online page for things like our community guide, a weekly devotional, and the teaching slides. The white-coat effect is a measure of blood pressure change from before to during the visit in office/clinic when the blood pressure is recorded by a physician or nurse; this was first described in 1983 by Mancia et al, and was initially thought to represent a benign process. But it was unclear what this actually meant for pregnancy. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) has been used in pregnancy for about 20 years now. Use of this monitoring option has revealed a subgroup of patients who have persistently high blood pressure (BP) in the presence of health care providers, but a normal ambulatory or self-measured BP. This phenomenon has been termed “White Coat Hypertension” (WCH). In 2013, The International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy (ISSHP) published the revised classification for hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, that included WCH, not previously included. The ISSHP guidelines also emphasize that a diagnosis of white coat hypertension in pregnancy should only be considered before 20 weeks of gestation. We now know that WCH, outside of pregnancy, is not an entirely benign process. The role of metabolic risk factors in patients with white-coat hypertension was first outlined in 2000 by Kario and Pickering. When metabolic risk factors are present in association with white-coat hypertension, the increased risk of target organ damage is determined not only by the blood pressure characteristics but also by the metabolic abnormalities. Recognizing the potential risks of white coat hypertension was also published in a commentary in 2016 out of the European Society of Cardiology. That article's title was, “White-coat hypertension: not so innocent”. But what is the latest data on WCH in pregnancy? Is WCH linked to poor obstetrical outcomes? Does WHC need medication therapy? We have data from 2024 to help us. Listen in for details.

Mad Bomber Melville is the long overdue biography of Samuel Melville, a white, working class revolutionary, whose guerrilla bombings of Manhattan skyscrapers, housing government and corporate offices driving the Vietnam War, set in motion a flood of armed revolutionary actions in the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Once imprisoned, Melville became a key organizer and a crucial element of the notorious Attica Prison rebellion, uniting prisoners across racial barriers and making the ultimate sacrifice for revolutionary change. Mad Bomber Melville traces Sam Melville s short life and rapid political development, highlighting a much-needed example of an undying and uncompromising struggle for justice and liberation.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Episode 359: On a warm summer evening in June 1887, 17-year-old Mary Pickering Tuplin vanished from her family's farm in Margate, PEI. A search and a grim discovery followed that would rock the quiet farming community to its core. Mary's body was found in the Southwest River, weighed down by a heavy stone, with two gunshot wounds to her head. The subsequent investigation would uncover a web of secrets, including the fact that Mary was six months pregnant. Circumstantial evidence led to 19-year-old William Millman's arrest, allegedly Mary's lover. The shocking facts of the crime and its investigation led to a sensational trial that captivated the entire country. Millman was convicted and sent to the gallows in April 1888. Was justice indeed served, or, as some speculate, was an innocent man sent to the gallows?
