On a Road to Self Acceptance with Tara Massan and Seth Singleton We start out with the weather. The Butte and Camp Fires have made the air quality in Oakland very dangerous. I share a few personal examples including the joys and discomforts of wearing an air mask on a daily basis. Tara is enjoying a snowstorm that she describes as normal for where she lives in Minnesota. Tara welcomes the snow because it coats the bleak winter landscape when it is dry. When Self-Help Goes Bad 2 main sections Tara wants to address: The Dangers of Self-Help and Nonsense we have all heard. Self help can reinforce feelings of shame and guilt and being less than Self help can enable avoidance and procrastination Self help creates more analysis by paralysis Self help is a diminishing return It creates the urge to say I want to fix this… That’s great, if you want to live to your potential But diving in can mean I can’t fix a problem until I fix what is wrong with me Self Help is a business that sells information Not a product that is tangible To keep you hooked you have to keep fixing what is wrong with you You don’t have to be or think a certain way to be worthy It gets you hooked on the idea that you are not enough. What’s wrong with you? You should be doing this? Needing help Find a coach Guilt is not help You’ll Never Be Good Enough Until You Do This There’s Something Wrong You Self Help is a product of searching and discovery Specific examples and results Self-Help as a band-aid A form of avoidance Meaningful action Build a door to enter a room I kind of cut her off here Embracing the suck Rumi quote 4 Types of Nonsense 1. You learn to be successful by listening to successful people How many people have followed this advice and failed? How many did not follow and succeeded? Do you they have a hidden variable like luck or money? 2. Positive Psychology Good to ask what is the positive here? This has led to “Avoid Negative Thinking” Negative thinking can address deep confliction Negative reveals discovery about self Negative attitudes reveal unreal expectations It’s ignoring that you are sick You will experience both Sometimes its a bad mood and you don’t have to sit in it But to ignore it is to make yourself sick 3. Procrastination Leonardo da Vinci proved procrastination can birth a new idea It doesn’t make you a bad person 4. Follow your Passion Does not mean, "Screw your job." Or that you are Entitled to live your life only by your terms Your passion may not be your income It may not lead to greatness Beware Misrepresentation Passion requires work Invest in your passion You still have to do something about it 5. Developing an Awareness Think Critically Cultivating your Awareness Be comfortable seeing things that might not feel comfortable. This podcast is Part 3 of a series. On a Road to Self Acceptance with Tara Massan and Seth Singleton There are few feelings more powerful than want. Only a small number of people even know what it is that they want. Knowing what you want can be the most empowering experience. That is why one of the most difficult challenges we can face is when we can’t do what we want. Personal desires, the plan for a dream, project, or a community, are goals that are susceptible to hardship and misfortune. When an obstacle prevents you from getting what you want it can leaving you feeling helpless. The great challenge in these moments is when you can stop focusing on the thing or things that you can’t do and you find a way to work on what you still can do. In this conversation with Tara Massan on our series about Self Acceptance, we discuss a process that can help determine the choices you still have when you can’t do the very things you want to do. Arrow will come to an end with a limited ten-episode 8th season that will bring the show to a close next Fall. The original post on Stephen Amell's Twitter announcing the news was followed by an emotional video from Amell. I guarantee the DCN Podcast will be talking about this on Saturday. I love this article about Superman hiding his clothes. And then there is this fun article on video games and if they encourage people to make good or bad choices. I'm almost finished editing my conversation with Tara Massan and will be posting it soon. In the meantime here is a clip to enjoy. Click here: https://anchor.fm/seth-the-storyteller/episodes/On-a-Road-to-Self-Acceptance-with-Tara-Massan-e2hbk2 Today's Conversation... Rough Starts can still make for a great conversation. I don’t feel good. Stomach trouble. Tara hurt her back when she tried a new workout routine called HIIT. I forget to ask her to explain what this is and means. My best understanding is that it is High-Intensity Interval Training. My stomach, her back, means we are off to a rough start. But, we both know the remedy. Rest enough and we will regain our health. The body heals itself. Oh, and I still have a lingering cough, so you hear me opening a cough drop and crinkling a wrapper. Today we are focusing on change. Tara came up with this topic and I thought it was important that we did it right, which is why I asked her to take the lead. If I was going to contribute to this idea, I needed to get out of the way enough to see what we were talking about. When I did, Tara's purpose and direction led to an amazing discussion. As we get older our life experience compounds and beliefs will be challenged. It takes courage to change your beliefs We all have permission to change our minds anytime we want. We are often afraid to admit our mind has changed. Let's start with an example like nutrition. White Hot Truth - Danielle LaPorte http://www.daniellelaporte.com/whitehottruth/ "Many people including ourselves are afraid to change their minds and behaviors because we identify with them. This is when an inner conflict will arise." There are other examples: Career change, quitting a habit, finding a new significant other, and something as simple as trying something new or giving up something harmful like drinking diet soda, alcohol. One thing that can help is something Tara created called Permission Slips. We are allowed to be a walking contradiction: What does that mean? It means to challenge your beliefs and ask questions all the time. Where do we start? Ask the question, Does this Serve Me? We can also remember that it is okay to disagree. We don't have to surrender to our beliefs. About Tara Massan: Tara Massan is a Yoga Teacher, Personal Trainer, and Lifestyle Coach. Tara Massan is a life coach and a writer who has been featured in LifeHack, Womanitely, HER magazine, Huffington Post, Elite Daily and featured in the Wall Street Journal.   Tara created "Be Moved" because she knows what it is like to live with negativity and no direction in life; to feel lost and powerless to do anything about changing that.   Since launching Be Moved in December of 2015, I’ve personally connected with hundreds of readers, and I’ve realized this is something that many of us have in common:  we allow negativity and limiting beliefs about the past, present and future limit our potential and happiness in the present. And even though we want our lives to change for the better, we don’t how to live a life that doesn’t revolve around our former limiting beliefs.  So instead, we keep living with the same limiting beliefs and allowing negativity in our lives – the end result is living a life rooted in pain. The great news is that we are in charge of what happens next.  We are in charge of our beliefs, how we interact with negative situations, and how we live today as a result. IF YOU’RE FEELING OVERWHELMED with negativity in your life… DISCOURAGED  DISAPPOINTED in yourself  LOST because life isn’t going as you imagined it would go… …then you’re in the right place. We all feel these things at some point in our lives.  However, you are in charge of what happens next.   Tara has developed a 4-week email course that blends self-help and action that will help you eliminate negativity in your life, to feel inspired and more fulfilled in the present, and create a life you desire.
