“This message will self-destruct in five seconds…” Join your favorite TransAtlantic podcasting crew – Ian, Megs & Liam (B-Tech Kev said something about needing to catch a flight to Atlanta) – as we don our sunglasses, rev up the motorcycles, and flip our hair in the wind for our 275th episode covering Mission: Impossible 2 (2000). We're trading thermal vision  for Chimera viruses and slow-motion stunts as we discuss: How Mission: Impossible 2 became the most John Woo movie that ever John Woo'd. Does this sequel hold up as a stylish thrill ride—or is it just all style, no substance? Is Ethan Hunt a superspy… or just a shampoo commercial with explosives? What exactly does an audience want to see out of a Mission: Impossible film exactly Which member of Ethan's crew we'd most likely be – and who's clearly channeling peak Dougray Scott vibes. Is this the weakest link in the franchise—or an underappreciated relic of early-2000s action excess? Is Ethan Hunt a character or just an avatar for Tom Cruise to do James Bondesque films Speaking of gripes—what exactly was Ambrose's plan again? We've got questions about masks, voice strips, motorcycles, and why no one seems fazed by endless slo-mo doves. We talk flamenco espionage, face-swapping twists, and the importance of always removing your sunglasses dramatically. Just how many actors were only in this film for the paycheck? Was Thandiwe Newton bad in this or is she just poorly written for and poorly directed? Is this the lustiest film in the Franchise? Whether Mission: Impossible 2 is the Best Film Ever.

Three incredible artistic talents came together at the beginning of the millennium to create an astounding work of art: Tom Cruise, John Woo, and Limp Bizkit... together they produced MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 and we thank them every goddamn day of our lives. We're back to discuss M: I 2 with connoisseur of early 2000s cinema/vibes Katherine Vienneau. We've got the Chimera Virus, we've got Thandiwe Newton, we've got Dougray Scott oh my god we've got Dougray Scott. We've got masks galore, we've got sexual Tom Cruise having sexual sex, we've got at least a little bit of that classic John Woo doves and slo-mo and heroic bloodshed. We also pay our respects to Val Kilmer, Rest in Peace, and our disrespects to former friend of the show Paul Schrader, Rest in Piss. We talk about a very special Buckcherry appearance at Woodstock '99, and also recount our favourite Val Kilmer movies (TOP SECRET!, THE DOORS, THE SALTON SEA, and REAL GENIUS). In this episode Larry Gilbert sat down with the multi-talented actor Oliver Trevena, a name synonymous with success in Hollywood, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship. With over 20 years in the entertainment industry, Trevena has seamlessly navigated various roles from acclaimed TV host to award-winning actor, producer, and philanthropist. Trevena's journey in the spotlight began with his charismatic presence as a TV host for major shows like Young Hollywood and The Hollywood Reporter, where he interviewed some of the biggest names in entertainment. He's also fronted red carpets for prestigious award shows, including The Grammys and The American Music Awards. But his career didn't stop there. Over the last few years, Trevena has transitioned from hosting to acting, and what a journey it has been. Oliver has starred in over a dozen feature films, sharing the screen with Hollywood heavyweights like Gerard Butler in Plane, Nina Dobrev and Aaron Eckhart in The Bricklayer, and Olga Kurylenko and Harvey Keitel in Paradox Effect, the latter earning him the Breakout Actor Award at the Rome Film Festival. With the recent Toronto Film Festival premiere of The Cut, where he co-stars alongside Orlando Bloom, Trevena's name continues to rise in Hollywood's elite circles. While his acting resume grows, Trevena is also making waves behind the camera. He produced and stars in Another Day in America, which recently hit the festival circuit, and he just wrapped production on Icefall, starring alongside Joel Kinnaman and Danny Huston. Trevena's upcoming projects include two television shows: Beachy Head, which he co-created with Danny Cannon and stars Dougray Scott, and London Son, both of which he is producing with Pulp Fiction producer Lawrence Bender. Beyond Hollywood, Trevena's impact is felt on a global scale through his philanthropic efforts. For over a decade, he's served as an ambassador for Not for Sale, a worldwide organization fighting human trafficking and modern-day slavery. His dedication earned him an award from the Duchess of York. His passion for humanitarian work doesn't stop there—Trevena produced a documentary in India, spotlighting the importance of female education and raising awareness about forced child marriage. Trevena is not just an entertainer; he's also a savvy entrepreneur. As the founder of Ollywood Media, he's built a thriving business centered around investments, production, and brand creation. Recognized as one of the "Top 20 Entrepreneurs to Watch," Trevena has merged his deep connections within the entertainment world with his creative vision to launch global brands like Allsaints, DOGPOUND, and Next Health. His most recent venture, Caliwater, co-founded with close friend Vanessa Hudgens, has attracted an all-star group of investors including Gerard Butler, Glen Powell, and Ryan Tedder. With a packed schedule of upcoming films, TV projects, and entrepreneurial ventures, Oliver Trevena continues to redefine what it means to be a multi-hyphenate in the modern entertainment industry. Whether he's acting, producing, or leading philanthropic initiatives, Trevena's passion for storytelling and making a difference shines through every endeavor. Tune in to the full episode to hear Oliver's inspiring story of perseverance, the lessons he's learned from his 20+ years in the entertainment business, and how he balances his Hollywood success with his business ventures. We interrupt our regular programming for the first of several periodic check-ins with the X-Men's exploits on the silver screen! This "show within a show" begins with 2000's X-MEN - the movie that put comic book adaptations back on the map. Apropos of the concept itself, X-MEN's path to a theatrical debut was long and hard-fought. Plans to translate the series to film can be traced back to the early '80s, with comics creators Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas collaborating on a prospective screenplay for Orion Pictures. After Orion folded, subsequent efforts would invite interest from the likes of Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron for Carolco Pictures. Carolco's bankruptcy saw the rights revert to Marvel, and development stalled for years with the company unable to make the case for their successful comics franchise. However, impressed with the X-Men's unexpected Saturday morning dominance for Fox's children's television division, producer Lauren Shuler Donner thought it only made sense to option the property for 20th Century Fox's live action slate in 1994. The next two years brought drafts and treatments by 'SEVEN' screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, author Michael Chabon, and filmmaker Ed Solomon. The studio considered Brett Ratner, Robert Rodriguez, and Paul W.S. Anderson, but it was Bryan Singer in whom Fox believed they had found their perfect fit for director. Following Singer's hiring, a finalized script was eventually hammered out, with David Hayter receiving sole screenwriter credit (despite contributions from Solomon, Christopher McQuarrie, and Joss Whedon ending up in the onscreen product). Still, Fox was hedging their bets due to a string of critical and commercial failures by superhero adaptations in recent years, capping X-MEN's budget at $75 million (a paltry sum by today's standards). Despite some shake-ups along the way (Exit Original Wolverine and Cyclops actors Dougray Scott and Jim Caviezel, respectively), what materialized was a lean and efficient picture, brought to life by an incredibly talented - if not entirely star-studded - ensemble cast. X-MEN would overperform to the tune of $300 million worldwide, establishing itself right out of the gate as a blockbuster franchise that would carry Fox to huge box office receipts for years to come. It would likewise serve as a career-defining film series for many of its performers, themselves household names today. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe poised to make a go at recreating the magic, X-Position takes a look back at where it all began! Join Jenny, Tim, and unofficial third co-host Keithie as we break it all down. From the creative choices, the good, the bad, and the ugly one-liners, to the cast that could have been (Glenn Danzig's Wolverine? Bob Hoskins??), and even Magneto's Mutant Cave Rave, no thought shall remain unread (or unsaid).

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss Mission: Impossible 2. Stars Tom Cruise, Anthony Hopkins, Thandiwe Newton, Richard Roxburgh, and Dougray Scott. Bio-terrorists plan on releasing a virus for reasons, and Tom Cruise and the rest of the IMF gang have to stop them. Featuring slower pacing and worse plotting than the first film, Mission: Impossible 2 also has flashier action scenes (doves! shooting guns on motorcycles! more doves!) courtesy of Hong Kong director John Woo. Whether it's the Limp Bizkit cover of Lalo Schifrin's iconic TV theme, Tom Cruise's flowing locks, or the extreme sports mountain climbing intro, this one has aged worse than most in the series. While it's nice John Woo got to work with such a massive budget for once, it's a shame it wasn't for a better film. The Mission: Impossible 2 shoot went on for so long that Dougray Scott had to drop out of a role for a fledgling movie series that would have boosted his career to huge heights: Wolverine in the original X-Men. That's Hollywood, kids! Sequelcast 2 and Friends is part of the Tokyo Beat Podcast Network. "You, sir, are supposed to be charming." We watched "Ever After: A Cinderella Story" and we do NOT need to be rescued thank you very much! Drew Barrymore is having a bit of a career renaissance these days with her super charming, super viral (personal space anyone?) talk show, but we're taking it back with this one. Twenty Five Years to be exact! It was 1998 and Hollywood was still experiencing a contact high from Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" and we wanted more retellings of the classics through a 90's lens! More young Hollywood It-Girls! More alternative rock songs in the trailer! But we'll be darned if this movie doesn't actually work. Drew is really giving it her all as Danielle, the soot-faced orphan doomed to live out her days serving her Wicked Stepmother and Stepsisters, but we need to talk about Anjelica Huston absolutely eating as The Baroness Rodmilla De Ghent - the Wicked Stepmother. Drew knew what a moment it would be for the Barrymore and Huston acting dynasties to be together for this one, so she called Anjelica herself begging her to take the role. And we as movie-goers are forever in her debt. We also get to see Melanie Lynskey (herself having a moment lately) in an early American film role and she's so adorable we can't even stand it. Listen, we all know the story of what could have been with Dougray Scott's (Prince Henry) career (google it) but in what could have been a thankless role, he really came to play and it shows he's having a good time. This movie is straight up fun - it's a Cinderalla story where historical Leonardo da Vinci plays the Fairy godmother. Honestly, work.  Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

“Well, this is not ‘mission: difficult', Mr. Hunt. This is ‘mission: impossible.' ‘Difficult' should be a walk in the park for you.”Hunt's Back for Love, Doves, and Viruses!Returning for a sequel to their hit, Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner decided to explore the franchise with a different director – something they'd continue doing for the first five films. For this, they went with Hong Kong action filmmaker John Woo. Known for his over-the-top action set pieces, his use of slow motion, and his use of doves, it may seem a bit of a surprise that what Woo really wanted to inject this sequel with was romance. But is that where the film goes wrong? Or did it have issues even without the love story? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our ‘Mission: Impossible' series with a conversation about Woo's 2000 film Mission: Impossible 2.Here's a hint at what we talk about. While it may seem natural to hire John Woo to direct a Mission: Impossible movie, it's quite a surprise that this is the worst of the franchise. Woo's filmmaking style doesn't seem to fit. It feels like it's a different universe than where the rest of the franchise takes place. But is that strictly Woo's fault? Was it partially the story put together by Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga? Or the final script written by Robert Towne? It's hard to say, but the romance Woo wanted to inject into the story certainly doesn't help. And that's one of our primary complaints. Nya, as played by Thandiwe Newton, could be an interesting expert thief character but they drop that angle instantly and restrict her to love interest and pawn. Plus, by the time we get to the end of the film, they completely bail on Nya as a potential threat to humanity with the virus she's carrying. No wonder Newton had such a miserable time making this movie. But there's also the angle of the virus and antidote. It seems very James Bond villain-esque, but even there it's less about threatening the world and more about making a little money. Maybe it's because we struggle with Dougray Scott as the villain, or the fact that his relationship with Newton's Nya seems less likely than a possible gay relationship with his right hand man played by Richard Roxburgh. Cruise does start his crazy stunts here with the wire work as he's doing the free solo climb. His later stunts and action set pieces aren't too bad, but they never feel great. It has its moments, but this film just never feels like it's doing what it needs to be doing. Still, it makes for a fantastic conversation. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, Dougray Scott, Jessica Raine and two scary skeleton creatures are all so unspeakably horny that all Nathan, Corey, Si and Pete can do is Hide. Notes and links Jessica Raine, who plays Emma in Hide will go on to play Doctor Who's first producer Verity Lambert in An Adventure in Space and Time, a drama about the origins of Doctor Who which is released a few months after this episode. But more about that later, perhaps. (Spoilers!) Sound Effects No. 13: Death & Horror was an album produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1977 and used continuously in TV and stage productions ever since. Mary Whitehouse complained vociferously about its release, because of course she did. Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014) also features time-travelling astronauts with a ghostly influence on the past. It's hard to imagine that it makes that much more sense than Hide though, isn't it? I considered writing about the racist lyrics of Cole Porter's Let's Do It, but after a second's reflection, I've decided to just let you Google them for yourself. But really, don't. The Stone Tape (1972) was a made-for-TV movie written by Quatermass's Nigel Kneale and featuring Jane Asher and Doctor Who's very own Ian Cuthbertson. Like Hide, it features researchers spending the night in a house haunted by a spectral woman, but Neil Cross would like to make it very clear that for copyright purposes, it is in every way a legally distinct entity from Hide. El Sandifer is particularly scathing in her assessment of Nigel Kneale in her essay on (among other things) ITV's 1978 TV movie version of Quatermass. And finally, Whatever Happened to Susan Foreman? was an episode of a comedy radio programme called Whatever Happened To…?, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 1994 — featuring Jane Asher (again) as Susan Foreman. It was released as a special feature on the DVD of The Dalek Invasion of Earth. Actually, there is one more thing. The story from The Sarah Jane Adventures that we talk about in the tag is called Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?. It's amazing. Go and watch it immediately.
