Tongan Language Week is upon us! According to Stats NZ, Tongans are the fastest-growing Pacific ethnic group in New Zealand in recent years. The 2018 census found Aotearoa had a Tongan Population of more than 82 thousand - but only 12 percent of Tongans under 15 spoke the language. Now the Government is investing in Pacific bilingual education throughout the school system so young people can reclaim their language. This week the Fofo'anga 'o Aotearoa Incorporated Society has been hosting the 'Four Golden Threads' Tongan Language and Music Serieson Zoom & Facebook live, as part of Tongan Language Week celebrations 2021. The ‘Fa Kave'i Koula ' Tongan Language and Music Series is a 'talanoa' spread across four evening sessions that has been outlining the importance and relevance of Faka'apa'apa (Respect), Tauhi Va (Reciprocity), Mamahi'i me'a (Perseverance) and Loto to (Humility) in equipping our Tongan community to achieve success in all areas of their lives. Each night has had its own theme and special guest speakers, along with musical performances. The Tongan community has organised a mass vaccination event in the Auckland suburb of Favona. It's part of Tongan Language Week and will run for the next three days. Organisers are hoping to vaccinate 3000 Tongans aged 12 to 30 at the drive-in vaccination site at the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. RNZ Pacific's Mariner Fagaiava-Muller spoke to Corin Dann.

Fakakoloa ‘o Aotearoa ‘aki ‘a e Lotu Mo’oni - Enriching Aotearoa New Zealand through prayer and faith. Reverend Motekiai Fakatou was born in Tonga and moved to New Zealand more than thirty years ago. Churches have played an integral role helping Pasifika people settle into a new way of life in Aotearoa.
