Kehaulani Folau is a Madau-Moana (Oceanian) scholar and doctoral student of education, and Tino is a critical educator and activist. We discuss ‘diversity' in the context of dominant schooling institutions, including its impact and limitations. Our talanoa/platica is inspired by recent legal acts to ban diversity initiatives, and Tino's online commentary “DEI can't save us, so why do we try so hard to save it?”. We critically reflect on the institutional limits of diversity initiatives, imagine a more robust political project of liberation, but also end with examples of how such initiatives despite their shortcomings have been beneficial.

Former All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has come to the defence of controversial star Israel Folau saying he "can't be punished" forever. Folau was sacked by Rugby Australia in 2019 for making anti-gay social media posts. He scored a try for Hansen's World 15 against the Barbarians on the weekend, but was jeered each time he touched the ball at Twickenham. Hansen says while he doesn't agree with Folau's views, he believes he should be given an opportunity to change. We're joined by sports reporter Felicity Reid. It's rare for a story to be covered so extensively, but still leave the bulk of the audience feeling as though there are unanswered questions. For many, that was the experience of Israel Folau's rise and fall in Australian sport. Now, a new documentary has illuminated parts of the story which were previously shrouded in darkness, while adding context and nuance to the sections already widely reported. Today, Patrick Stack speaks with key voice Jamie Pandaram about the ABC documentary 'Folau'. Featured: Jamie Pandaram, rugby writer, News Corp. Subscribe to the ABC Sport Newsletter

Liberal MP Trent Zimmerman says the government's Religious Discrimination Bill has been improved by the removal of the Folau and conscientious objections clauses. But he's expressed alarm that the bill will still give primacy to religious views and could open the door to the discrimination of minority groups based on characteristics such as sexual orientation.

Joel and Dave discuss religious liberty and the on-going case of Israel Folau, a now former Wallabies rugby player with a not so good meme-game. They consider several problematic arguments circulating: the claim that contract is foundational; an emphasis on brand management; and a focus on religious liberty as moral autonomy. Call it a syllabus of errors all round. Call it the closest Dave will ever get to talking rugby.
This week it has been culture war issues dominating the news cycle. Joining me to discuss all of it is once again Senior Editor of The Unshackled Damien Ferri. Former rugby player Israel Folau last Friday opened up a GoFundMe page to fund his legal challenge against Rugby Australia for terminating his playing contract. This attracted a fair bit on controversy given that he has a property portfolio worth $7 million. On Monday morning, GoFundMe pulled Folau's page for violating their terms of service. The Australian Christian Lobby has restarted the legal fund and already raised over $1 million in less than 24 hours. The escalation of emotion around this issue has increased with freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of association and corporate power being hotly debated. Cory Bernardi announced he was planning to deregister his Australian Conservatives party after their poor performance at the federal election. He claims the party is no longer needed because Scott Morrison is a good conservative Prime Minister. A lot of his former members and supporters would beg to differ with that view are vowing to relaunch a new proper conservative party very soon to offer a real alternative to the Australian voters. There has also been change in Fred Nile's Christian Democratic Party with 18 year old Samraat Joshua Grewal assisted by 22 year old Joel Jammal removing the party's state executive in an effort to renew the party after they failed to have their state MLC re-elected at the NSW state election. Damien also gives us a report on the True Blue Crew Aussie Pride Solidarity March at Penrith in Sydney last Saturday. Around 30 patriots attended with Ricky Turner the special guest speaker. It was a low turnout but with most patriot groups banned from Facebook advertising these events is much more difficult.
