Jeremiah Wood of Northern Maine is a state fisheries biologist, cattle farmer, trapper, author, & host of the Trapping Today podcast. We open on Jeremiah describing where he lives: the North Maine Woods; his desire to work the land & raise cattle; changes in the region's economy; and thoughts on growing up in such a rural area. From there we begin a focused conversation on the often vilified topic of trapping where we explore what it's all about & why to some, it's their lifestyle; from ethics & misconceptions, regulations & populations, to fur, history, & nostalgia for the past. While laying out the many furbearing species, Jeremiah describes the behavior & habitat of his favorite, the "pine" marten, followed by what it's like to run a backcountry mustelid trapline. For his story, Jeremiah speaks to his dream of living in Alaska & a recent trip where he caught something contemplatively deeper than a lynx or wolverine. We end on some of Jeremiah's books & podcast guests including the cast of Discovery Channel's "The Last Alaskans." Zoom. I've been trapped in relationships, in business dealings, and even at airports...all never really ended well. Then came this episode where we cover the good kind of trapping. We visit with Jeremiah Wood of Trapping Today and talk all sorts of things trapping. Talk about out of my league. Jeremiah is the know all of trapping and a huge advocate for one of the coolest things a person can do outdoors.

In this episode, Kyle Kaatz takes over the podcast. In interviewing me, we chat about my background, how I got into trapping, the origins of Trapping Today, and we riff on the future of trapping and our message to trappers in today's society. This might be the most fun I've had on a podcast so far, and we're 80 episodes in!!! Hope you enjoy.
In Episode 67 of the Trapping Today Podcast, I discuss a project close to my heart, The Stan Project, which would result in a documentary series on the life of Yukon Men's Stan Zuray. I go over the results of North American Fur Auction's March 2019 Fur Auction results and prices for wild fur, and talk about a few other topics. By the way, our friend Kris Pope at Coyote Trapping School, has 70 five star reviews on ITunes. We only have 60. What's up with that? Please take a second to give Trapping Today an ITunes review, let's give Kris a little competition! Remember, let me know if you pledge to The Stan Project. You may get something good in the mail! In this episode, I talk about attempts to diminish or ban trapping in state legislatures across the country. It's a sad reality, but we trappers need to be vigilant to protect our right to continue doing what we love. On a lighter note, I talk about "The Stan Project", a Kickstarter campaign for a documentary series on Yukon Men's Stan Zuray. I mention an article on BC trappers that I was a part of, and the opportunity to pick up one of my tanned marten and fisher pelts. Contact me at jrodwood@gmail.com for more. In this episode I talk about trying to stay legal with a complex set of trapping regulations. I mention a cleanup in the fur shed in preparation for the fur handling season. I also read another excerpt from "Hunters of the Northern Forest". One of the more interesting parts of this reading is the high value trappers earned from a few months' work on the line. Adjusted for inflation, these old timer trappers were making Wall Street banker wages out on the trapline back in the day! Enjoy! Click here to find a copy of "Hunters of the Northern Forest".
In this episode, I go over the latest from my marten line, including a painful trapline check in deep, wet snow. In this episode I talk about our January in November here in northern Maine, and discuss my transition to running the trapline on snowmobile! I also mention Dave Vander Meer's book, "Call of the Wilderness". Click here to find a copy of the book. Enjoy!
I'm back on the trapline resetting marten and fisher traps after a long illness. Feeling like a new man and super excited to be back trapping again! I recorded this episode on the drive back out of the woods after setting traps all day. Enjoy!
In this episode, Cole Porter and I talk trapping after getting done tending and pulling (for now) my marten and fisher trapline. Enjoy! Check out Kaatz Bros. Lures, sponsors of the podcast. If you're interested in picking up some of my Long Distance Call lure we mention in the podcast, click here.
In this episode, I discuss what my truck looks like geared up for tomorrow's marten and fisher trapping season opener. I go over the use of lure and bait, other associated gear, and the fact that I can't help but get out there despite a bit of a health setback. I answer a couple of listener questions, give a shout out to a couple of great listener stories, and draw the name of the Kaatz Bros. T-shirt winner. Enjoy!
In this episode, it's the eve of the early muskrat trapping season opener, I'm over extended in work and life, fur prices remain in the tank, and I still can't help but love to talk trapping! I give a shout out to Kris Pope, who recently started his "Coyote Trapping School" podcast, talk muskrat trapping with HagZ spring clips, mention the legend W.A. Gibbs of the muskrat swamps, my recent purchase of old O'Gorman trapping supply catalogs, and an invite to give a demo at next year's Neil Olson's New England Trappers Weekend. I then talk a bit about Robert Marshall's book "Arctic Village", and read an excerpt from the book about trapping in 1930's Wiseman, Alaska. Thanks to Kaatz Bros. Lures for sponsoring the podcast! Be sure to leave a review of the podcast on Itunes between now and next week to be entered to win a Kaatz Bros 'Got Skunked' T-shirt! Links: Coyote Trapping School podcast HagZ Spring Clips W.A. In this episode I discuss what delayed this week's podcast, answer a question about beaver trapping in flooding conditions, and ramble on a bit about my fur shed and what I'd like to see in the ideal fur/trapping shed. Feel free to comment on what the ideal fur shed would look like to you. Enjoy!
In this episode, I discuss the idea of "trapping like a kid". It's an interesting mindset that I think can help make us all more effective trappers. I read through, and comment on, an article I wrote here on Trapping Today about trapping like a kid. Hope this gets you thinking more about how you approach your trapping this fall. Also, Kaatz Bros Lures, sponsor of the podcast, is looking for glands from the critters you catch this season. Selling glands, castor and skunk essence is a great way to increase your income from the trapline. Enjoy!
In this episode, Cole Porter and I finish up our discussion during our trip to put out marten and fisher boxes on the trapline and do a little fishing. Enjoy!
In this episode, Cole Porter and I talk marten and fisher trapping as we head out to set boxes out on my line. We discuss plans for the upcoming season, marten/fisher interactions, and habitat types we look for when setting traps. Enjoy!
In this episode, I discuss the dream I've always had of going into the Alaskan wilderness and being a trapper-homesteader. The topic is fresh in my mind after reading Stan Zuray's book, "Carry On". Stan was a star in the Discovery Channel's hit show "Yukon Men", which featured people from the Alaskan village of Tanana. Stan has an interesting story, growing up in Boston, Massachusetts, and moving to Alaska to get away from it all. Today he still runs a trapline in the country he originally homesteaded, 30 miles outside of town, and traps out of the cabin he built decades ago. I'm a huge fan of Stan and his story, and hope to interview him on a podcast episode someday. Enjoy! Click here to purchase Stan's book. Click here to see Stan's Youtube channel, which has videos of his early interviews (videos are titled "My Life"). Check out the TV show "Yukon Men".
In this episode, I catch up on listener questions, including: -waxing footholds for water sets -importance of where you get dirt to make wax dirt -how we as trappers can help educate and grow our base -finding proper location for coyote sets -fire ants in dirthole sets -creating a business to make a better market for wild fur -gear I use for winter water trapping As always, you can send questions or comments to me at jrodwood@gmail.com. Thanks and enjoy!
In this episode, I discuss my recent order with Kaatz Bros. Lures, and the fact that now is a great opportunity for trappers to stock up on traps, lure and supplies. Prices are going up across the board for various reasons, and now's the chance to get what you need before the big price increases hit. I discuss a recent change to the bear trapping rules in Maine, which caught trappers off guard recently. I talk about sniffing lures, trying different lures and ingredients, and thoughts on developing a few new lures to test out on the line. Enjoy!
In this episode, I sit down with Noah Frost, a young marten trapper from northern Maine. We discuss getting into trapping, trapper education, setting up a marten trapline for the first time, and thoughts on running a trapline in an area with complex regulations and competition from other trappers. We recorded this episode from a camp in the woods, and I forgot my voice recorder, so had to use a phone app. Sorry about the poor audio quality, but I hope you enjoy the discussion and learn from it!
In this episode, Cole Porter and I discuss our experiences at Neil Olson's 42nd annual New England Trappers Weekend in Bethel, Maine. The episode is recorded on the car ride home, so you'll notice some background noise and a few distractions, but I think we had a great conversation about what we picked up from the event. In my mind, there are three aspects to a trapper's convention: 1) the people you meet and reunite with, 2) the things you learn from other trappers and demonstrations, and 3) the traps and supplies you get stocked up on. We discussed each of these topics, from a couple of different perspectives. The main theme I picked up on from this convention was the idea that competition is good, if it's fair and you allow it to motivate you. Some of the highlights of the weekend were the chance to meet and learn from Red O'Hearn, Mark Zagger and Gary Jepson, and a series of other demonstrations that we learned at least one or two things from. We got to catch up with several guys we met last year, and scored some pretty good deals on supplies, though we spent too much money like we always tend to do at shows. This is a long podcast and we covered a wide variety of topics, so feel free to let me know if there's something we could explain better or go into more detail on. And be sure to support our sponsor, Kaatz Bros. Lures. Their support for the show is what keeps bringing you new episodes each week. Thanks and enjoy!
In this episode, I introduce Kaatz Bros. Lures as a new sponsor of the show. Since we're in the swing of trapping convention season, I talk about the benefit of conventions, and the upcoming convention near me, Neil Olson's New England Trappers Weekend. I bring up other trapping podcasts, including mentioning Clint Locklear's recent podcast interview with legend Tom Miranda, and the new podcast from Trapping Inc. TV. Finally, I review Jim Helfrich's 1980 book, "Profitable Fox Trapping". Enjoy! Click here to visit Kaatz Bros. Lures Click here to purchase a copy of "Profitable Fox Trapping" by Jim Helfrich.
After touching on some listener emails, fur prices and trapping news, I go into detail on Charles Dobbins' book, "Evaluation of Lures, Baits and Urines". Lure testing is an often overlooked topic in the trapping world, but being a professional trapper, Dobbins took it very seriously. In this book, he described how he put lures through extensive testing to determine their effectiveness and how animals reacted to them. Understanding how different lures work in different situations on your trapline can build confidence, inform better technique and make you a much more effective trapper. Click here to purchase Dobbins' book Enjoy!
Looking to unload some of your old traps and make room for more inventory? How about another source of income working on something you enjoy? In this episode, I discuss my experiences and lessons learned from a decade of selling traps on Ebay.
In this episode I discuss the different options for fastening traps, and go through the evolution of stakes and drags throughout trapping history, as well as the current products available on the market. Enjoy! Show notes: Fur Real website i mentioned early in the show Why Use Trap Drags? A Review of Trap Drags
In this episode, I discuss the need for, and process of getting permission to trap on private land. Trappers are held to a high standard when it comes to landowner permission, and gaining permission is critical to our success on the trapline. I wrote a blog post about this a while back, and I read through that post and provide additional thoughts and commentary. I also mention the Trappers World review of my new book, "Fur Profit", and talk about the NAFA July 2018 fur auction. Enjoy!
In this episode, I finish up the marten/fisher/mast discussion, go over listener emails, discuss the preliminary results of the NAFA July fur auction, and a few other odds and ends. I'm a bit tired and it was a bit rough, but I hope it turned out okay. Enjoy!
In this episode I discuss my absolute lack of bobcat trapping experience, but provide some information and suggestions for a new trapper looking to trap bobcats for the first time. There are a lot of DVD's available with good bobcat trapping information. I suggest one or two from a trapper in your general area/habitat type. If you find bobcat habitat, travelways and sign, all there is to do is make the proper set and you're golden! In the second part of the episode I discuss marten/fisher and weasel trapping in Maine and New York and how it is affected by food availability, primarily driven by the strength of mast crop that varies year to year. Enjoy!
In this episode I discuss the difference between a bait and a lure, and the different types of lures, primarily food, call and gland lures. I then discuss what a lure 'base' is, what a base does, and the different types of bases most lures are made of. If you're enjoying the podcast or would like other topics discussed, shoot me a message, I'd love to hear from you. Also, the best way to support the podcast right now would be to pick up a copy of my new book, "Fur Profit". Enjoy!
