Send us Fan MailOld growth forest, forgotten portages, and the kind of canoe routes that only exist as long as people keep travelling them. We're live at the Hamilton Adventure Expo talking with Mike from Friends Of Temagami, a 100% volunteer-driven nonprofit founded in 1995 that works to protect Temagami's remaining old growth and keep backcountry access from quietly disappearing.Mike breaks down what stewardship looks like in practice: choosing where trail maintenance matters most, clearing tough routes in places like Solace Wildlands, improving campsites, and installing thunder boxes they build themselves. We also get into the nuts-and-bolts details that make volunteer time count, including winter snowmobile runs to stage heavy gear so it doesn't have to be portaged later, plus summer maintenance trips to fix hazards like rotted boardwalk and old spikes. The conversation widens into community and culture too. Mike shares how Friends Of Temagami supports a September changing-of-the-season ceremony connected to Temagami First Nation, and why protecting “ancient trails” is about memory, respect, and keeping routes from being lost to overgrowth. If you love Ontario canoe camping, Temagami travel, portage routes, and real conservation work, you'll leave with a clearer picture of how the park stays wild and welcoming.Subscribe, share this with a paddling friend, and leave a review if you want more stories from the people doing the work that keeps Temagami open.https://www.friendsoftemagami.org/https://www.facebook.com/friendsoftemagamihttps://www.instagram.com/friendsoftemagami/Support the showCONNECT WITH US AT SUPER GOOD CAMPING:Support the podcast & buy super cool SWAG: https://store.skgroupinc.com/super_good_camping/shop/homeEMAIL: hi@supergoodcamping.comWEBSITE: www.supergoodcamping.comYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqFDJbFJyJ5Y-NHhFseENsQINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/super_good_camping/TWITTER: https://twitter.com/SuperGoodCampinFACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SuperGoodCamping/TIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@supergoodcampingSupport the show

A lot. As part of Operation Nanook-Nunalivut 2026, a team of Canadian Rangers crossed more than 5,200 kilometres of Arctic wilderness by snowmobile. For 52 days they traveled along parts of the Northwest Passage where weather, equipment failure or one wrong decision can quickly into a very serious situation.Three Yukon Rangers, Maya Poirier, Philippe Brient and Dan Beaudoin, reflect on the longest Arctic patrol ever conducted by the Canadian Armed Forces. They talk about navigating in whiteout conditions, setting up tents, constant dangers, arriving in remote northern communities, and what surprised them most traveling for an extended period of time in extreme conditions.A conversation about endurance, teamwork, survival, and a part of Canada most people know little about and will never experience firsthand. All statements and opinions expressed in this episode are the personal views of the individuals involved and do not represent the official positions of the Canadian Armed Forces or the Canadian Rangers.CREDITSHosted by Tammo WalterProduced by Mark KoepkeIntro/outro music & stings by Major Funk Acoustic Riff by NeverNotDead -- License: Creative Commons 0You might also like:Time is Tissue: Racing the Clock Against FrostbiteGearing up for an Arctic endurance race“Whoa, bear!” A close-up on the Yukon's most famous instructional videoCONNECT WITH USWebsite: theyukonmagazine.comInstagram: @the.yukon.magazineFacebook: @TheYukonMagazineLinkedIn: @theyukonmagazineEmail: podcast@theyukonmagazine.comSUBSCRIBE TO THE MAGAZINESubscribe for yourself or as a gift for that special person who needs a little more Yukon in their life. On this special edition podcast, we are joined by our great friend Christy Walcott, Vice President of all things FUN at the Gaylord Michigan Tourism Bureau.Christy is actually the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Bureau, which really does mean that her job involves taking visitors out to show them the very best that Gaylord has to offer. It's why we try to have her on as much as we can, because she not only lives in Gaylord, she gets on out there and experiences all the things that this fun Northern Michigan town has to offer. She's been on the show before, sharing everything from summer sink hole lakes for swimming to best places to paddle board. One thing she always has in spades is local restaurant recommendations, and more often than not, very specific DISH recommendations from said restaurants. Christy not only wants you to visit, she wants to make sure you try the best things on the menu. On this episode of Behind the Mitten, Christy gets extra specific for this 2026 winter season, which is turning out to be a bang up one for the Gaylord region, with oodles of snow piling up all over, creating amazing conditions for all the outdoor winter activities you can imagine. Gaylord is a mecca for snowmobilers, who can use the town as their base, and then explore all of northern Michigan via sled. Christy shares a fun itinerary for a, now get this, snowmobile foodie tour.Very cool, right? Christy takes us to places in town like Big Buck Brewery and Benethums, as well as places outside town, like The Thirsty Sturgeon and Paul's Pub, which is located just off Trail #403.You certainly don't have to travel via sled to experience all the great places that Christy suggests, you can also hop in your car and drive. But there is something both magical and downright wild about snowmobiling, so if you can give it a go, we highly recommend. There are places where you can rent snowmobiles, and all the gear too, in the Gaylord area. We've done this before and had an absolute blast. Let's just say that NEW snowmobiles are nothing like OLD 1980's snowmobiles, and we very much like the heated seat and handles. We also really recommend the Gaylord Tourism website, all the information that you need to explore this area can be found here.

A man from rural Gilboa, New York finally shares a story he kept silent about for decades. At just five years old, while riding a snowmobile with his father, he witnessed something in the snowy woods that didn't match anything he'd ever been taught was possible. What he saw weren't the massive, towering creatures people expect — but two smaller, upright beings standing in the trees, watching him in complete silence. That moment stayed buried… until later discoveries began surfacing.Years afterward, unexplained 14-inch footprints, eerily straight trackways, and multiple whispered sightings from trusted locals began emerging across Schoharie County, West Fulton, and the forests surrounding the Gilboa Reservoir. Hunters, families, and lifelong outdoorsmen all reported encounters they couldn't explain — and most never told publicly. In this episode, the witness connects the dots between his childhood encounter and a growing pattern of activity that suggests something has been quietly moving through this region for generations.

Now that farm fields have been harvested it's time for snowmobilers to get active. Not on their machine, but in posting the trails that riders will follow when the snow arrives. In Wisconsin, that's a big job! Ben Jarboe finds out about the human workforce that has to mobilize from Lori Heideman, president of the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs. She explains how they prepare the nearly 25,000 miles of trails for snowmobile season. She also gives an update on some of the things the association is working on. Precipitation is on the way to Wisconsin beginning tomorrow morning. What form will it be? Stu Muck says with temperatures in the 40's, it'll probably remain rain this time. The federal government shutdown forced some changes in consumer buying patterns and grocers are noticing it. Kiley Allan follows up on the trend with Nick Novak, President of the Midwest Food Processors Association. He says consumers are being careful with their available dollars and want to know what they're getting. He highlights the value they're finding in canned and frozen vegetables for example. With very few ingredients on the package, consumers are feeling confident about the price and the product. Nebraska has surpassed Texas as the number one cattle feedlot state. Their governor, Jim Pillen, is also very happy to report that every bushel of soybeans produced in the state stays in the state. He says with all the anxiety over China being out of the marketplace, it's a comfort to Nebraska growers. Wisconsin dairy is on a roll! Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin Board Member Ali Straschinske says farmer checkoff dollars are driving real results at home and abroad, according to the annual report. From marketing wins that made WisconsinCheese.com rank #1 on Google, to cheese exports reaching over 50 countries, today's Check In With Dairy Checkoff highlights the quality, care, and pride of Wisconsin dairy. After a couple November snows, it may have some Wisconsin residents thinking about the upcoming snowmobile season, but what might not get thought about is the preparation that needs to be done on the nearly 25,000 miles of trails in the state. Through the summer it is inevitable that some branches will grow and trees may fall. Lori Heideman, the President of the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs, says that it takes every bit of the 36,000 members to make sure the trails are ready for winter fun.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
