When Vicki Wegerle, the mother of two young children, was strangled in Wichita, Kansas, in 1986, her husband Bill was considered by many to be the prime suspect. For the next 18 years, police lacked evidence to charge Bill, or anyone else with Vicki's murder. Subsequently, a desire for recognition led Dennis Rader, aka the BTK (bind, torture, kill) killer, to fall into a police trap and supply them with incriminating evidence. How can DSLR camera traps, remote sensing, and affordable wildlife technology transform biodiversity monitoring in India? In this episode, we speak with Dhruvam Desai, founder of Pardus Wild-tech LLP, a pioneering Indian startup that is transforming the field of wildlife monitoring and ecological research through innovative, India-made camera systems.Dhruvam discusses how his early passion for birdwatching evolved into a commitment to biodiversity conservation and wildlife research. His experiences in the forests around Manipal, combined with his engineering background, led to the development of camera traps specifically designed for India's unique environments. This episode explores the intersection of ecology and technology, and how tools like DSLR camera traps and remote sensors can deepen our understanding of nature.Pardus Wild-tech focuses on addressing the shortcomings of imported trail cameras, which often fail in India's extreme climates. Dhruvam explains how the company's sensor innovations minimize false triggers, improve battery life, and reduce environmental impact through rechargeable systems. He introduces the new REX trail camera, designed to be ultra-affordable and efficient, and shares insights into the design of the Pardus P1 sensor, which achieves lightning-fast trigger speeds and extended field life.Beyond trail cameras, Pardus is expanding into advanced wildlife technology, including GPS trackers and thermal cameras. The company is working to make these tools accessible and cost-effective for conservationists, researchers, and forest departments across India.Dhruvam explains how DSLR camera traps differ from traditional trail cameras in terms of image quality, emotional impact, and the ability to capture detailed, intimate portraits of wildlife in their natural habitat. These images not only serve scientific purposes but also inspire public interest in biodiversity conservation. This episode also highlights the importance of field-driven innovation and the need for more Indian-made wildlife technology. Dhruvam reflects on the challenges he has faced as a young conservation tech entrepreneur, including skepticism based on his age and the lack of domestic competition in the field. He emphasizes the need for a stronger R&D ecosystem in India to support biodiversity research and ecological monitoring.Pardus Wild-tech aims to build an integrated network of wildlife lodges, ecologists, and photographers, providing them with reliable, tailored technology solutions. Dhruvam and his team are committed to rewilding landscapes, supporting forest departments, and promoting ethical and impactful conservation strategies.Whether you're a conservationist, photographer, technologist, or student of ecology, this episode offers valuable insights into the power of technology to support biodiversity monitoring, Indian biodiversity protection, and wildlife research. In this episode, we dive deep into the evolving landscape of predator and wildlife management across the United States. From the reinstatement of black bear hunting in Louisiana to ongoing debates in Florida and Washington, we explore how science, legislation, and public perception shape the future of hunting, conservation, and land use. Join Fred and the crew as they examine the growing tensions between wildlife and human development, the role of hounds and trapping in sustainable management, and why the hunting community must better communicate its conservation value. We also discuss the challenges of managing emerging predators like jaguars and the controversial reintroduction of species into ecosystems. Key Takeaways: Bear Hunting Regulations Vary Widely by State: Oregon and Idaho offer spring bear seasons; Washington does not. Louisiana recently reinstated its black bear hunting season after decades, and Florida is considering reopening its black bear season. Science-Based Wildlife Management Is Essential: Predator-prey dynamics are complex and must be studied to avoid unintended consequences. Reintroduction of species, such as wolves and mountain lions, can disrupt existing ecosystems. Trapping and Hound Hunting Remain Valuable Tools: Used for selective predator control and critical data collection. Legislative efforts continue to impact their use across states. Legislation and Public Perception Drive Wildlife Policy: Conservation decisions are often shaped more by emotion than by science. The hunting community must better advocate for its role in sustainable wildlife management. Most leadership development still clings to certainty, quarterly goals, strategic plans, official futures etched in stone. But what if that mindset isn't just outdated, it's dangerous? In this episode, Dani Johnson and Stacia Garr sit down with futurists and experience designers Lisa Kay Solomon and Jeff Rogers, two minds helping rewire how leaders think about the future, not as a distant unknown, but as a daily design challenge. What unfolds is a conversation that's as practical as it is provocative, revealing how our obsession with predictability might be blinding us to the signals we most need to see.For learning leaders, especially those in HR and people analytics, this episode offers a wake-up call. Future thinking isn't a luxury or a moonshot exercise. It's a leadership muscle, and the longer it goes untrained, the more fragile our organizations become. Lisa and Jeff unpack what it really means to design for the future, not just in abstract vision decks, but in how we design meetings, questions, experiences, and even relationships. Their approach is grounded in curiosity, humility, and a radical shift from answers to inquiry.By the end, listeners don't just understand why futures thinking matters, they feel invited to do something about it. The conversation offers not just hope, but tools: from rethinking design as a vehicle for emergence, to spotting and disrupting “official futures” inside their own organizations. Whether you're planning your next L&D initiative or shaping strategy for a shifting workforce, this episode shows you how to lead with intention, not from the past, but toward what's possible. Over the years, especially here in Iowa, the turkey population has seen some major fluctuations. Part of that has to do with the amount of habitat that is being removed, but another major issue is predators, mainly raccoons. The increased population in raccoons means that more turkey nests are getting raided and the amount of turkey poults massively decrease. Along with the increase in raccoon numbers, we have seen a major increase in the number of bobcats. With the prices of furs being down across the country, the trapping season is become tougher for hunter who want to help manage their properties. So the question is, is there anyway to be able to see a major impact in the trapping industry? On this episode of the Raised Hunting Podcast we discuss how predator control has been affecting not only our turkey population, but populations of large game across the country over the years.Discount Codes:You guys have been absolutely amazing when it comes to supporting Raised Hunting so we wanted to return the favor! Start Your Transformation Now How many times have you tried to change and failed and then said things like…“I'm so weak, I have no willpower, I can't trust myself,” and the like? Well, the truth is this, when you've tried to change in the past and failed, it's not about you personally, it's about your habits. More specifically, it's about your reptilian brain habits. So, when you've tried to change before and failed, it has nothing to do with weakness, it simply has to do with knowing how to work with your brain. In this episode I talk about: [2:30] How personalizing your habits is a mistake [3:50] Why your habits are not about “you” [5:29] Why you are not your habits [7:14] The fact that you've been indoctrinated into who you are [10:23] How your indoctrination keeps you trapped [18:03] Your money and health indoctrination [21:25] And, the reason you should choose your self-indoctrination I often tell people, “You're not at the mercy of your circumstances, you're at the mercy of your interpretations.” And, it's vital that you not personalize your habits and your interpretations because you're then working against yourself in your quest for change and transformation. Listen, apply, and enjoy! Transformational Takeaway You are not weak, you are not at the mercy of your circumstances and indoctrination, you are at the mercy of what you CHOOSE to indoctrinate yourself with, your self-talk and habits. In this episode of Truth From The Stand, I sit down with Lucas Benoit—a lifelong New Hampshire deer tracker with a deep understanding of big woods bucks. We dig into the realities of hunting low-density whitetails in the rugged backcountry of New England, where every step counts and patience is currency. Lucas talks about how terrain, pressure, and age class play into buck behavior, and why spending time in the woods is the only way to really learn it. We also get into tracking deer in snow, hunting mixed timber and swamp country, and the mental grit it takes to chase deer where seeing even one is a win. Lucas shares the story of chasing a ghost of a buck for 4 years and what it taught him about persistence, heartbreak, and how to adapt when the deer have the upper hand. This one's packed with hard-earned knowledge from a guy who's made a lifestyle out of chasing mature deer the hard way. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PODCAST 434 Big woods hunting, patience and woodsmanship. The weight of it all. Trapping builds skills in reading sign and terrain. Adapting strategies for mountains and swamps. Trail cams help but don't replace woodsmanship.
