W09 New England Naturals - With Jake DeBow Jake DeBow didn't just grow up around trapping; he grew into it, built a life around it, and somehow turned frozen beaver ponds, late nights, and a sewing machine into a thriving business. In this episode, Wayne sits down in Jake's trapping shed to talk about New England Naturals, the art of fur, and why more people are starting to care about where their food and even their clothing comes from. Wanting to hunt private land this fall? Learn why now is the time to act and how to gain private land hunting access. Stay updated on major wildlife news, including a federal corruption case, venison donation fraud in Ohio, and Etsy's controversial fur sales ban. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 6, Episode 284 How to Access Private Hunting Land + Key Updates on Wildlife Corruption, Venison Fraud, and Etsy's Fur Policy How to respectfully gain access to private lands for hunting access. According to Outdoor Life, a former head of Louisiana's wildlife agency has pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge tied to a kickback scheme involving public contracts. Jack Montoucet, who led the state agency from 2017 to 2023, admitted he helped steer a contract for online hunter education courses to a specific company in exchange for a share of the profits. Prosecutors say the money was split among Montoucet, a former wildlife commissioner, and the contractor. As part of a plea deal, four other charges—including wire fraud and money laundering—were dropped. Montoucet now faces up to five years in prison and a possible $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for June. Federal officials say the scheme involved hiding payments until after Montoucet left office. Another official connected to the case has already been sentenced to four years in prison. Prosecutors say the case highlights the importance of accountability in public office and warned they will continue pursuing corruption at all levels of government. Reference: https://www.outdoorlife.com/conservation/louisiana-wildlife-secretary-pleads-guilty-corruption/ Ohio Deer Processor Accused of Selling Donated Venison Meant for Food Pantries Wildlife officials in Ohio say a deer processor has pleaded guilty after investigators found he was selling venison that had been donated to help feed people in need. The case was investigated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and involved a business called Rod's Custom Deer Processing. Authorities say deer donated through a program intended to supply local food pantries were instead processed and sold. The investigation, known as “Operation Donor Deer,” uncovered a wider set of wildlife violations tied to the case. Officials say Rodney Shields, 59, of Harrisville pleaded guilty to seven charges, including felony counts of obstructing justice and theft by deception. According to the Department of Natural Resources, investigators ultimately identified 35 people connected to the case and 55 wildlife violations overall. Charges included the illegal sale of wild animals, inaccurate record-keeping, and possession of untagged deer parts. Many of the deer involved had been officially checked and reported to the state after being legally harvested. Shields received 17 months of suspended jail time and was placed on two years of community control. He was also ordered to pay 16-thousand-500 dollars in restitution, which state officials say will be distributed to victims whose donated venison was sold. It's not clear how much venison was involved in the scheme, and officials have not confirmed whether the processing business is still operating. Reference: https://www.outdoorlife.com/conservation/ohio-deer-processor-caught-selling-donated-deer/ Etsy to Ban Fur Sales, Sparking Debate Over Impact Online marketplace Etsy will ban the sale of animal fur products starting August 11, a move the company says supports biodiversity efforts. The policy targets items made from animals killed primarily for their pelts, though products like leather, wool, and sheepskin are still allowed. Who supports the ban: Animal-rights groups, including the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade, are celebrating the decision. They say it's part of a broader push that has already led to fur bans in places like California and proposed restrictions in several other states. Concerns from trappers and wildlife managers: Trappers and some wildlife experts argue the ban misunderstands how fur is sourced. They say regulated trapping helps manage wildlife populations and that fur is often a byproduct of conservation efforts—not the sole purpose. They also warn the policy could hurt small businesses that rely on online platforms. Some sellers say Etsy was their primary marketplace, handling nearly all of their sales. Economic and environmental debate: Critics of the ban say natural fur is biodegradable and longer-lasting than synthetic alternatives, which are often petroleum-based. They also argue that declining fur markets can make wildlife  management more difficult by reducing incentives for regulated trapping. What happens next: Affected sellers are now looking to move to other platforms, while activists signal they may continue pushing for similar bans elsewhere. The decision highlights an ongoing divide between animal-rights advocates and those who view trapping as a conservation tool and source of sustainable materials. https://www.outdoorlife.com/conservation/etsy-bans-fur-sales/ OUTDOORS FIELD REPORTS & COMMENTS We want to hear from you! Be sure to check the show notes for a link to Fred's channel and head over to subscribe for more of his incredible content.Fred opens with a heartfelt reminder about the importance of valuing the people we love, then dives into two chilling stories from the Alaskan backcountry. The first goes back about twenty years, when longtime partners Brian, a licensed pilot, and Casey, who owned a Piper Cub, flew into the Chugach Range to check their winter trap lines. What started as a routine trip quickly turned unsettling when they spotted a fast-moving, humanlike figure in the wilderness. As they continued, they found traps sprung, missing, or disturbed in ways that made no sense. The unease only deepened when they came across foul-smelling hair and began hearing repeated screams and the sound of something large moving through the area. Both men were overcome by the terrifying sense that they were being watched—and worse, intensely hated. After firing shots and making a desperate retreat toward the plane, Brian became physically sick as an even larger creature seemed to move in on them. They managed to escape by air, but not before realizing later that the creature had taken Brian's snowshoe. The experience left such a deep mark that it strained their friendship for years, until they recently reconnected and finally spoke about what happened.Fred's second story follows Chad, a cyclist traveling north of Trapper Creek, whose night in the wild took a disturbing turn. He discovered that his hammock strap had been ripped loose and that some of his gear had been moved into a tree, as though something had been deliberately toying with him.Things escalated when he encountered a dark-faced figure that let out a scream so powerful and unnatural it sent him fleeing. In a chilling twist, another cyclist miles away also heard the scream and decided to get out of the area as well.Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube Channel Email BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? The West Virginia Fur Auction is an annual fur, root, skull & antler consignment sale in Glenville, West Virginia. After a reading about the first fur-trade explorations over the Alleghenies into West Virginia in 1671-74, we head into the auction with in-the-field reporting on the modern fur, root, meat, gland and oddities markets, interviewing the likes of trappers, fur hangers, graders, buyers and members of the West Virginia Trappers Association. Many grew up trapping and we hear how meaningful it is to continue the very trade that founded America. From protecting endangered species to supporting natural materials over synthetic textiles, the trapper is discussed as an environmentalist. Throughout are charming moments like a young lady demoing how to skin a noxious skunk or what to do with a raccoon's pecker bone. As the buyers stand around the racks of bobcat pelts, piles of beavers, boxes of skunks and deer horns, we find out what they're looking for whether they specialize in garments, felt, costumes or oddities. As the auctioneer rattles off the bidding, you've got a front row seat to the fascinating world of American fur. Reading from The West Virginia Encyclopedia by Philip Mallory ConleyTo learn more about the West Virginia Trappers Association: wvtrappers.comSupport Our Numinous Nature on Patreon.Follow Our Numinous Nature & my naturalist illustrations on InstagramCheck out my shop of shirts, prints, and books featuring my artContact: herbaceoushuman@gmail.com

Colleen and Chrystal bring you the story of a minor league team in Utah that played just eight seasons, but won four Pioneer League titles and set a professional baseball record that still stands -- 29 consecutive wins in 1987, on their way to a three-peat. Part-owned by Bill Murray, before the actor co-founded the St. Paul Saints, the Salt Lake City Trappers had one of the great lightning-in-a-bottle runs in baseball history, all without an affiliation to a major league team after having began their existence in Calgary, where they had been a farm team for the Cardinals and Expos before Alberta got Triple-A baseball (now just as gone as the Trappers, alas). This Week on Trapping Across America we are looking at how we are trained to think as adults and why this way of thinking can hurt your trapping. Most of us want to do what we are told to think. Like where is the right place to put a trap at a coyote set? Where does the trap go on a raccoon set out on the water or a pocket set? You have a trap placement in mind, but why, where did you get your ideas from? have you challenged these ideas. Most trapping is done with the grown up adult way of thinking. Sounds right, but this way of thinking does not leave a lot of room for discovering the things out on your own trap line. Kids discover for the sake of discovery, you want to be a better trapper, you should really be open to discovery. You might find that little kid that has to ask why and why not. Discovery is the key to find better and faster ways to trap. I will be talking about something that I have been playing around, ….the Portable Pocket. It has opened my eyes.

If you do not want your wife, mom or grandmother to see your ranting, maybe some thought should be put into your post before you hit enter. Next I get to talk to Jeff about his trapping and road trapping in Louisiana. Note from Clint….we are not calling any trapper schizophrenic, a socialist or bitter. We are talking about the thought process that comes across on-line. We are not talking about ……a single person or a single trapper. So don't jump to a conclusion that is not based off of facts.

Litter trapping plants don't worry about soil, they make their own! Because so many species in the tropics grow either epiphytically or in nutrient poor soil, some of them have turned to alternative solutions. Their anatomy is such that they collect everything from dead leaves to bird droppings. A diverse community of soil microbes and invertebrates can then go to work to create nutrient rich humus. What's more, litter trapping abilities can be found in plants as distantly related as ferns and orchids! Join me as we revisit an interesting discussion with Dr. Scott Zona about his work finding and describing litter trapping plants.
