Growing up in inner city Houston sheltered from the very “ghetto” culture that surrounded me, I was bussed to gifted & talented schools and encouraged to alter the way I talked, dressed, and behaved – only to “fit in” with majority culture. This is not living in truth. This miseducation was part of my adolescent experience minimizing the “ghetto fabulous” black woman image that is very mainstream now in rap culture. An image that was once suppressed and now is celebrated. This solo cast call us to challenge our snap judgements of raunchy rap lyrics especially of the likes of artist, Sexyy Red, and instead, reflect on the truth that these goddesses represent in the rawest, grittiest form because the spiritual journey can never sound, look or be wrong when aligned in truth. For part two of our Gwen Stefani series, NPR Music editor Hazel Cills returns to Pop Pantheon to tackle Gwen's solo career. Louie and Hazel discuss Gwen striking out on her own via collaborations with Moby and Eve, then parse through her certifiably bonkers, extraordinarily controversial, hit-stacked solo debut, 2004's Love Angel Music Baby – undoubtedly one of the mid 2000's biggest blockbusters. Then they consider her 2006 follow-up, The Sweet Escape, and solo return a decade later, 2016's This Is What the Truth Feels Like. Along the way, they dig into Gwen's gleefully polyglot musical aesthetic, her infamous cultural appropriation and, finally, rank Gwen Stefani in the official Pop Pantheon. Read Hazel's retrospective review of Love. Angel. Music. Baby. She is a three-time GRAMMY Award-winner who has achieved global success as, among other accomplishments, a performer, songwriter, frontwoman for ska-punk heroes No Doubt, and multi-platinum solo artist. To date, she’s sold more than 50 million units worldwide, including her four-times-platinum debut solo album ‘Love.Angel.Music.Baby.’ The 2004 release delivered the hit singles “Rich Girl,” “What You Waiting For?”, and the Pharrell Williams-produced No. 1 hit “Hollaback Girl.” Her 2015 solo album, ‘This Is What the Truth Feels Like,’ debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Most recently, she released her new reggae-tinged single “Let Me Reintroduce Myself”, which she co-wrote and recorded in quarantine with our very own, Ross Golan. The single finds her reminding fans of what she does best: create vibrant, uplifting music that is real and honest to who she is as an artist. “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” caps off a busy 2020 for Stefani. She had two top 10 hits on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart with fiancé Blake Shelton, “Nobody But You” and “Happy Anywhere.” And her holiday album, ‘You Make It Feel Like Christmas,’ was just reissued with two new songs, including Ryan Tedder co-write “Here This Christmas.” And The Writer Is… Gwen Stefani!Artwork: Michael Richey White See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

You can put EVE on an arena stage, a movie set, a sitcom soundstage, a talk show panel, even in a rap battle with a bunch of dudes. This fearless female will waste no time showing you she can’t be contained. From the Philly streets to Dr. Dre’s “castle” in Calabasas to the world’s stage, this guest shares with us how you can be a truth teller and a storyteller without sacrificing your authenticity or your instincts. She also lets us in on how she wound up taking the entertainment industry by storm despite her biggest fear: public speaking. Eve dishes on everything, starting from the first audition with Dr. Dre to being dropped and her journey to writing music and not being put in a box. This interview gives all the insight to becoming the entertainment industry's "It" woman. Eve Jeffers Cooper is a GRAMMY Award-winning musician and actress. She serves as host of THE TALK, CBS’ Daytime Emmy Award-winning talk show that examines topical events and contemporary issues through the eyes of five female hosts, alongside Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne and Sheryl Underwood. As a musician, Eve is best known for her music hits “What Y’all Want,” “Gangsta Lovin,” “Who’s that Girl,” “Satisfaction,” “Tambourine” and “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” featuring Gwen Stefani, which won the inaugural GRAMMY Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2002. In 2016 she reunited with Stefani for the “This Is What the Truth Feels Like” tour and hosted the “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail The Queens.” Eve has released four multi-million selling albums and 32 singles, and throughout her career she has collaborated with many prominent artists, including Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Jill Scott, DMX, Swizz Beatz, Dr. Dre, Juicy J, The Roots and Missy Elliott. Among Eve’s film credits are “xXx” with Vin Diesel, “Barbershop,” “Barbershop 2: Back in Business” and “Barbershop: The Next Cut” with Ice Cube, “The Cookout” with Queen Latifah and Meagan Good, “The Woodsman” and “Flashbacks.” On television she is best known for starring in her own self-titled UPN sitcom, “Eve,” and she also had a recurring role on “Glee” and appeared on four episodes of the Oxygen series “Sisterhood of Hip Hop.” Instagram: @therealeve
