They discuss her experience on the show, her music career, and what's next.Hosted by Shawna and LaLa, Life Beyond The Mic brings real conversations that go beyond the mic, lights, cameras, and stage. We just wrapped up the story of Kara Garvin, sentenced to life without parole for a crime she says she didn't commit, we have heard her version of events and explored the case against her but now it's time to get the opinion of the man they call 'The Voice of Reason' a man with over 30 years experience as a criminal defence attorney from Chicago Illinois, it is Michael Leonard. Kara Garvin grew up in Franklin Furnace, Ohio, a small, tight-knit community nestled along the Ohio River, the kind of place where everybody knows everybody, and where the OxyContin crisis of the early 2000s didn't just make the news, it moved in next door. Like so many in her community, Kara's life became entangled with addiction. And like so many, that entanglement would come to define how the world saw her.On the evening of the 22nd of December 2008, three days before Christmas, Edward Mollett, his wife Juanita, and their daughter Christina were shot and killed inside their mobile home in Franklin Furnace. A six year old boy, covered in blood, ran down the hill to a neighbour's house for help. Within hours, Kara Garvin had voluntarily walked into the Scioto County Sheriff's Office. By morning, she was facing three counts of aggravated murder. She has never stopped saying she didn't do it.In this series, I sit down with Kara inside the prison where she has spent the last sixteen years of her life. We go back to the beginning — her childhood, her struggles, the community that shaped her — and we walk, step by step, through the night of the 22nd of December, the investigation that followed, and the trial that put her away. We examine the state's case, the evidence, the witnesses, and the questions that Kara says have never been adequately answered.Three people lost their lives that night. A family was destroyed. A six year old boy saw things no child should ever see. Those facts are not in dispute. What is in dispute is who pulled the trigger.EARLY AND AD FREE ACCESS: for as little as $1.69 a week!Apple + HEREPatreon and find us on Facebook here. Hosted on Acast. We just wrapped up the story of John Spirko, a man who's spent over 40 years in prison for a murder that put him on death row, a murder he's always maintained he's innocent of, even though he was the one who put himself in the firing line of detectives. So as always when we finish these cases, it's time to find out what the man they call 'The Voice of Reason' thinks, does he believe John has a case for innocence, or is he not convinced? Let's find out from Michael Leonard of Leonard Trial Lawyers in Chicago, Illinois.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In 1982, postmistress Betty Jane Mottinger was abducted from her one-room post office in Elgin, Ohio — a town of fifty people and murdered.Six weeks later, John Spirko, a career criminal with a talent for spinning stories, decided to trade invented information about her death for a deal that would keep his girlfriend out of prison. It didn't work. Instead, his web of lies contradictory, provably wrong, and completely fabricated, somehow became the centrepiece of a capital murder prosecution. No physical evidence. No connection to the victim. No connection to the crime scene. Just the words of a man who admitted he made it all up.John Spirko has been on Ohio's death row, and now serves life without parole, for over forty years. A federal judge called his conviction a foundation of sand. A governor said there was enough doubt to spare his life but not enough to free him. This is his story as told by him from his prison cell in Ohio.EARLY AND AD FREE ACCESS: for as little as $1.69 a week!Apple + HEREPatreon and find us on Facebook here. Men bare rolig. Med venlig hilsen, Jannik & Casper Premieredatoer (fundet via Kino.dk, Grand Teatret & HBO/Max) I biografen: 15. januar: 'Begyndelser' (Dansk premiere) 15. januar: 'Rental Family' 15. januar: '28 Years Later - The Bone Temple' (Rammer biograferne ugen efter forgængeren) 15. januar: 'No Other Choice' (Park Chan-wook) 22. januar: 'Nouvelle Vague' (Vises bl.a. i Grand Teatret) 29. januar: 'The Voice of Hind Rajab' 29. januar: 'Die My Love' 5. februar: 'The Secret Agent' (Dansk biografpremiere) Streaming: 8. januar: 'The Pitt' (Sæson 2 på Max) 18. januar: 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' (Premiere på Max)
We are going back, back, back to the oldschool. Da Mouth of madness.
It is a privilege to welcome actress and singer Kim Yarbrough back to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar brand (and for the first time on the podcast) for the first time in 14 years! Many Reality TV fans first saw Kim Yarbrough audition for The Voice USA: Season Two in Spring 2012. Her powerful interpretation of Chaka Khan's “Tell Me Something Good” turned both founding coaches' chairs, Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera, around. After joining Team Adam, Kim wowed the audience with her cover of Mary J. Blige's “No More Drama” and advanced to the Season Two Live Playoffs. During The Voice: Season Two Live Playoffs, she sang Adele's “Rolling in the Deep” but fell into the Bottom Three. After delivering a superb, powerful cover of Jennifer Hudson's “Spotlight,” the Maroon 5 frontman chose to advance Kim's then teammate, Katrina Parker, to the Top 16. After her appearance on the NBC talent competition, Al Roker, Hoda Kotb, and Kathie Lee Gifford interviewed her on Today, and she sang with the Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Over the years, Kim dove deep into the entertainment industry. She guest-starred on several television shows, including 2 Broke Girls, 9-1-1, Hollywood Heights, Hot in Cleveland, Kenan, The Mindy Project, New Girl, Shameless, and The Up-Shaws. Kim also had recurring roles in Cherish the Day (Aunt Natalie), The Haunted Hathaways (Madame Labuef), and the animated series Kid Cosmic (Flo (voice)). In addition, Kim lent her voice to the Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. She also shared the stage and screen with entertainment industry legends, including Dennis Quaid, Loretta Devine, Octavia Spencer, Cedric the Entertainer, Stevie Wonder, Sheila E, and the late Betty White and her mentor Della Reese, who produced the stage show Della Reese Presents Kim Yarbrough, which allowed Kim to showcase her talents to the Hollywood Entertainment Community. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Kim Yarbrough spoke about voice acting, tutoring students in the arts, and if she would ever audition for America's Got Talent or wait for a future All-Stars season of The Voice USA. Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. This week, we hear reviews of two films: the 2019 "An Officer and a Spy," a film by controversial director Roman Polanski on the Dreyfus Affair, which is now playing in the United States, and the shattering documentary, "The Voice of Hind Rajab." But the pair opens the program by honoring director-actor Rob Reiner, who was slain over the weekend alongside his wife, Michele. We learn about his early acting work and hear about many of his groundbreaking films that have become enduring classics. Hoffman tells us about Polanski's cinematic childhood and early adult life -- he barely survived the Holocaust and his wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered by the Manson family. We then hear how Polanski skipped out on the sentencing after pleading guilty to engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, a 13-year-old girl he was photographing for Vogue, and has lived outside of the US ever since, but still working consistently. And after all that, we learn about the merits of the film, "An Officer and a Spy." The final movie discussed is potentially even more controversial to several listeners, "The Voice of Hind Rajab." The film portrays the attempts of the Ramallah-based Red Crescent to send an ambulance to save the six-year-old Hind, who is trapped in a war zone in northern Gaza in a car with her family, who are all dead. Using the actual soundtrack from the terrified girl's phone calls for help, the film is a carefully crafted re-enactment of the impending tragedy. Hear which film(s) got a seal of approval on this week's The Reel Schmooze. Growing up with both White and Hispanic heritage, Lucia struggled to connect with her Mexican roots as she was raised away from that side of her family. Determined to embrace her lineage, she became fluent in Spanish while studying abroad in Spain. As a passionate music lover raised in Washington state, Lucia was particularly influenced by Brandi Carlile. We have just wrapped up the insane story of Nosakhare Onumonu, a story that has to be heard to be belived! and as always after we wrap up these stories qwe must sit down with the man they call 'The Voice of reason' Michael Leonard to hear his thoughts from a legal perspective.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The story of Nosakhare Onumonu is nothing short of incredible. As a young man, Nosa's sister was brutally attacked by her partner—violence that ended when he set her home on fire and left her for dead. That man was arrested and sentenced to prison for his crimes, but the trauma left Nosa riddled with guilt. Why wasn't he there to protect her? In his mind, he had failed his sister, his niece, and their family. As time went by, Nosa helped his mother nurse his sister back to health while also caring for his niece. But those feelings of guilt only grew stronger. And when his sister was finally back on her feet, he made a decision—he was going to take something back from the man who had hurt his family. He wanted revenge.Of course, the man who had done this was behind bars and would be for many years to come. But Nosa wasn't willing to wait that long. He embarked on a suicide mission inside prison walls to get to him. And that was just the beginning. His story would take an even more shocking turn when he found himself wrongly convicted of a crime he didn't commit. Now, for the first time, hear this unbelievable story from the man himself—still incarcerated for a crime he has, in fact, been exonerated of. We recently wrapped up the story of Arkeene Broaden a young man who says he is innocent of the crime he's been convicted of but what does an expert think? As always it's time to catch up with the man they call 'The Voice of Reason' Mr Michael Leonard of Leonard trial lawyers in Chicargo Ilanois.________________________________________________________At 18 years old, Wayne County charged Arkeene and his 16-year-old friend, Cody Clark, with felony murder, robbery, conspiracy, and felony firearm in connection with the June 2015 shooting death of their close friend, Martez Johnson, at a house on Heyden Street around 10:00 PM.Authorities alleged that Arkeene drove Cody and Martez to meet Andre Thomas with the intent to rob Martez. They claimed that once they arrived, Cody and Martez went inside while Arkeene stayed in the car. Inside the house, Cody allegedly shot Martez in the head when Martez tried to escape.Arkeene demanded a trial, but after the jury was selected, his attorney passed away. The next attorney pushed him to accept a plea deal. Initially, the offer was for 18 years, then reduced to 14 years. Despite Arkeene repeatedly insisting on going to trial because of his innocence, the attorney continued pressuring him. Eventually, the plea offer was reduced to 8 years, plus an additional 2 years for the gun charge. The attorney warned that if Arkeene did not take the deal, he would face life in prison.Young, afraid, and unfamiliar with the legal system, Arkeene ultimately accepted the plea deal to avoid the possibility of a life sentence. He now believes that if he had been aware of all the evidence, he would have rejected the plea and insisted on going to trial.Later, Arkeene's family hired Professional Investigator Steve Crane from ACS Professional Investigations to conduct a proper investigation into the case. This is what they found. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A man with decades of trial experience as a defence attorney from Leonard Trial Lawyers in Chicago, Illinois—Mr. Michael Leonard.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In 1993, 18-year-old Rose Larner went missing. After six days without contact, her mother reported her disappearance to the police, initiating the largest and most extensive search and investigation in Lansing, Michigan's history.Over three years passed before police finally got a breakthrough. In April 1996, a man named Billy Brown, a childhood friend of Rose, contacted the authorities, saying he wanted to talk.Brown told police that he was with Rose the night she died but claimed he was not her killer. He alleged that he had witnessed Rose being murdered in a brutal fashion by another man, John Ortiz-kehoe.Eventually, John was arrested in Mexico and extradited to the United States, where he was tried and convicted for the murder. However, John maintains that the crime was actually committed by the very man who implicated him—Billy Brown. This is John's account of what happened that night and why he believes he became the scapegoat for this heinous crime. We'll be getting into the biggest tv show of 2024, a celebrity road trip “will they or won't they divorce” show which is just as big of a hot mess as it sounds like, rigged nationalist singing competitions, megacorp boy idol capitalism corrupting something as seemingly innocent as a farming reality show, and xinjiang-set tv hit drama. Our guest today is Em who writes Active Faults, one of my favorite substacks that explores the China's entertainment industry and celebrity fandom. It is a consistently dark read but one of my favorite discoveries this year. https://activefaults.substack.com/ Puttro music: one of those foreigners who showed up the Chinese singers in 歌手, China's 'The Voice" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMpnuYBcA_I Learn more about your ad choices.
