The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
Think the Grammys always reward the biggest voices? We put that idea on trial. From Luke Combs and Blake Shelton to Eric Church and Martina McBride, we map the stunning list of country heavyweights with multiple nominations and zero wins—and ask what those numbers really say about merit, timing, and taste. Then we widen the lens: Jelly Roll's breakout sweep, Zac Top's historic Traditional Country win, and how a single new category can rewrite a career's story overnight. We keep the momentum with a packed news slate: Lainey Wilson's cryptic “Can't Sit Still” teasers and possible Netflix tie‑in, Hardy's cinematic multi‑generational collab featuring Tim McGraw, Eric Church, and Morgan Wallen, Tim McGraw's Pawn Shop Guitar tour routing through Fenway Park, and The Voice's two‑hour season launch after the Winter Games. Along the way, we talk performance versus polish, the role of auto‑tune in modern crossovers, and why some artists soar on stage even if the trophies never land. Our community brings the heat with the Question of the Day: name an artist who left a famous band and built a real solo legacy. From Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Stevie Nicks, and Peter Gabriel to Darius Rucker and Peter Cetera, your picks fuel a rapid-fire tour through rock, country, pop, and beyond. We balance it with a transparent look at the business: do labels still help, or are they just advances with branding? Is touring truly profitable for rising acts in vans and trailers? And how do indie artists build durability when playlist spikes fade?We round it out with a sharp chart rundown—main and indie—plus a 2006 flashback to Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, and George Strait, showing how yesterday's storytelling still shapes today's sound. If you love country music, industry strategy, and a lively back-and-forth that doesn't hedge, this one's for you.Enjoyed the show? Pat Bergeson joins me on the show this week. Pat is one of those musicians who makes you stop and rethink what's actually possible on a guitar. And on a harmonica.Pat Bergeson is a true master of touch, tone, and taste, and one of the most deeply musical players you'll ever hear.Pat's guitar playing is rooted in the blues, jazz, and country traditions, but it's always personal, always expressive, and always unmistakably his own. He's been here in Nashville for a number of decades now, and has amassed an impressive list of credits, playing on records for artists like Dolly Parton, John Paul White, Suzy Bogguss, Blake Shelton, Alison Krauss and Lyle Lovett. But Pat has never been one to devote himself to session work, so he's led a much more rounded life, with tons of live playing and touring, including his current touring gig in Peter Frampton's band. When I first saw him, it was with the band Les Brers, which was Butch Trucks' band playing mostly Allman Brothers music, and seeing Pat teamed up with the band's other guitarist Jack Pearson, was a one-two punch of two of my absolute favorite guitarists in music city! One of the most meaningful chapters in Pat's career was his close association with the legendary Chet Atkins. Chet didn't just admire Pat's playing - he brought him to Nashville. Pat recorded and performed with Chet, and you can really hear that shared philosophy: musical elegance, deep respect for melody, and an understanding that less can truly be more. Pat played with Chet for years, both on records but also as part of his band that used to have a weekly gig here in Nashville at a little Italian joint downtown. And then there's the harmonica.Pat isn't just a great guitarist — he's one of the finest diatonic harmonica players you'll ever hear. So whether you know him from his work with Chet Atkins, his collaborations with Peter Frampton, his session work, his solo recordings, or his unforgettable harmonica playing, you're in for a great conversation today.Enjoy my conversation with Pat Bergeson! This season is brought to you by our main sponsors Larivée Guitars, Audeze, Izotope, FabFilter, and Chase Bliss. Jenny Tolman grew up around music, but her path to finding her voice was anything but easy. In high school, she found herself in an abusive relationship that changed the course of her life. Songwriting became her escape, then her healing, and eventually her confidence. As the pain faded, the music turned brighter, and Jenny realized she didn’t just love music, she was meant to do it. Her very first show was at the legendary Bluebird Cafe, and through songwriting she met her husband, Grammy nominated producer Dave Brainard. After Dave was brutally assaulted in a crosswalk attack, Jenny knew without question that he was her person and that she wanted to be with him forever. Shortly after having her son Bear, Jenny was cast on The Road, starring Keith Urban, Blake Shelton, and Gretchen Wilson, becoming one of 12 finalists while balancing new motherhood and full time touring. It was the hardest and most life changing year of her life and proof that sometimes the bravest thing you can do is keep going.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Interview Date: August 3rd, 2025Episode Summary: Choreographer/director Lindsey Blaufarb (half of LNC Collective) maps the leap from touring dancer to Emmy-nominated creative. She breaks down real creative direction—styling, staging, lighting, content, team-building—and shares lessons from The Voice, Blue's Big City Adventure, and directing Pentatonix's tours. For dancers, she gives today's playbook: build a brand look, study an artist's world, post smart on Instagram, DM thoughtfully, be a great hang, and let your originality—and energy—do the talking.
