Send us Fan MailWhat if the biggest moments in your life come down to one simple decision?Show up.This week on Here's What We Know, we sit down with rising country artist and songwriter Kyle Clark for a conversation about faith, songwriting, Nashville, and the unpredictable moments that can change everything.Kyle shares the story behind how one late-night decision to “just show up” led to a song eventually recorded by Blake Shelton after first being held by HARDY and Morgan Wallen. The episode explores creativity, resilience, purpose, and the small moments that shape our lives forever. If you've ever wondered whether the little decisions in life really matter, this episode is a reminder that sometimes the moments that change everything begin with simply walking through the door.In This Episode:How hit country songs are really writtenMoving from Georgia to NashvilleLeaving college to pursue music full-timeLearning to trust timing instead of forcing outcomesWhy great songs sometimes sit for years before finding the right artistThe role faith plays in creativity and songwritingThe emotional reality of chasing a dream in NashvilleWhy vulnerability matters in both music and lifeHow persistence and consistency open unexpected doorsWhy “showing up” became the defining lesson of his careerThis episode is sponsored by: Mike Counsil Plumbing & Rooter (Use code “Gary” to get $89 off any service!) License #: 679261Bison Junk Removal (Be sure to tell them Gary sent you!)Bio:Kyle Clark is a songwriter, artist, and producer born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and raised in the small town of Jefferson, Georgia. His love for country music, paired with a diverse range of influences and a strong work ethic, has shaped his unique sound. After winning the 101.5 Kicks Radio competition in Atlanta two years in a row, Clark's music caught the attention of hit songwriter and producer Jordan Schmidt (Kane Brown, Tyler Hubbard, Jason Aldean). In 2019, Schmidt offered Clark a joint venture publishing deal with Sony Music Publishing. Within a year, Clark co-wrote his first RIAA-certified Platinum single, “Villain” by Lily Rose. When the global pandemic hit, Clark focused his energy on producing his own music, learning from his mentor Jordan Schmidt and his roommate Jacob Durrett (Morgan Wallen, ERNEST). His dedication paid off in early 2022 when a video of his song went viral on TikTok, driving over 21,000 pre-saves for “Hope It's Hot Out,” which was released on May 27, 2022. The track crossed 1 million streams in its first week and has since amassed over 40 million streams independently across all platforms. In 2024, Clark signed a new publishing deal with Relative Music Group, and has since landed cuts with major country acts including HARDY, Blake Shelton, Dylan Scott, Jon Pardi, Mitchell Tenpenny, Restless Road, Mackenzie Carpenter, Erin Kinsey, and Chayce Beckham.Website: https://www.kyleclarkmusic.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@KyleClarkMusicInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/kyleclarkmusic/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@kyleclarkmusicFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/KyleClarkMusicTags: Kyle Clark, Gary Scott Thomas podcast, Nashville songwriter interview, country music podcast, Blake Shelton Let Him In Anyway, HARDY songwriter story, Morgan Wallen songwriting, country songwriting process, how hit songs are written, Nashville music industry, faith and creativity, storytelling podcast, songwriter interview, Kyle Clark Nashville, creative persistence, showing up changes everything, music industry inspiration, country artist interviewConnect with Gary:Gary's WebsiteFollow Gary on InstagramGary's TiktokGary's FacebookWatch the episodes on YouTubeAdvertise on the PodcastThank you for listening. Everything's Better With Ice Cream According To STEVE HARRIS From HILLBILLY VEGAS

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersHillbilly Vegas' dynamic sound caught the ears of an independent label in Nashville in 2011, and their first album Ringo Manor was released and sold more than 10,000 copies – driven by the hit single Little Miss Rough and Tumble. The band has gone onto chart five songs on Billboard's Rock charts, including Let It Ride – which remained on the chart for 13 weeks and reached #10, Feels Good, High Time For A Good Time, Hell To Pay, Two GunTown, and fan favorite Shake It Like A Hillbilly. The band has earned a reputation for rousing live shows-bringing a loud, party-like atmosphere that is all-inclusive.They've shown they have a broad appeal across different genres, pleasing crowds while performing shows with rockers Blackberry Smoke, The Kentucky Headhunters, Wolfsbane and Ted Nugent; along with country icons Alabama, Travis Tritt, Blake Shelton, and Wynonna Judd. Hillbilly Vegas has played before huge crowds at NASCA Revents, as well as many major bike rallies, including the legendary annual Sturgis Motorcycle rally. They have a strong UK following, and have played the Maid of Stone and Steelhouse festivals. Now, Hillbilly Vegas are set to raise the stakes even higher with the release of their new album A La Mode, slated for release this Friday, May 8. With everything you love about Hillbilly Vegas and fresh characteristics that expand their sound even further, A La Mode epitomises the rock and roll spirit unlike anything you have heard in recent memory.HEAVY sat down with vocalist and original member Steve Harris to find out more, starting by asking how he is feeling about the release."We feel good about it," he enthused. "We like what we've done. The name A La Mode is a silly name, but it's a fun name. We hope that everybody enjoys it as much as we enjoyed doing it."We ask Steve to dive deeper into the musical side of the album."Well, I wish I could say there's a bunch of deep meaning in it," he smiled, "but we just write songs and when I hear the music that the guys start writing, I just... Sometimes it tells a story, sometimes it paints a picture, and then I start writing from there. I do a lot of observational stuff, and people I know are just things I've seen, and there's a lot of things on there. There's a good story in every song, even the silly ones, and we hope everybody finds their story in our story."In the full interview we covered Hillbilly Vegas' new album A La Mode, its musical character, notable collaborations, and upcoming touring plans. Steve introduced the band lineup and described the record as a mix of ballads, heavy rockers, country, and boogie-woogie, explaining the title reflects the idea that “everything's better with ice cream” rather than any title track. He also highlighted the single Mr. Midnight, noting Paul Rodgers contributed vocals, appears in the song and video, and was praised as a defining rock voice and a generous collaborator. The conversation then reviewed the band's origins and early Nashville experience, with Steve saying the Nashville songwriting-factory environment conflicted with their broader rock-and-roll approach. He recounted how their first radio play led to a Nashville record deal. Steve also announced a U.S. summer tour planned for June–August, the band's first U.S. tour in three years, and noted several of their top streaming cities are in Australia and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Smoke and lights are pumped into the darkened sanctuary as a camera circles, filming the video for his latest single, “Let Him In Anyway.” It's a ballad about a recently deceased best friend whose eternal salvation is in doubt, but the director has an idea to inject some optimism into the song that is not suggested by the lyrics. He instructs two crew members to open the church doors as the song concludes, letting in streams of California sunshine that hint at an answered prayer.  “I try to make all my decisions by listening to what everyone else has to say,” Shelton tells Forbes. “We'll go edit it—and if it works it works, and if it doesn't, nobody besides you ever knows it happened.” The 49-year-old country music superstar describes all his ventures with similar aw-shucks humility. But those he works closest with say not to underestimate the business savvy of a man who has recorded 31 No. 1 country radio hits, opened a national chain of restaurants, launched a Hollywood production company and amassed a personal fortune that Forbes estimates at more than $200 million. Think the Grammys always reward the biggest voices? We put that idea on trial. From Luke Combs and Blake Shelton to Eric Church and Martina McBride, we map the stunning list of country heavyweights with multiple nominations and zero wins—and ask what those numbers really say about merit, timing, and taste. Then we widen the lens: Jelly Roll's breakout sweep, Zac Top's historic Traditional Country win, and how a single new category can rewrite a career's story overnight. We keep the momentum with a packed news slate: Lainey Wilson's cryptic “Can't Sit Still” teasers and possible Netflix tie‑in, Hardy's cinematic multi‑generational collab featuring Tim McGraw, Eric Church, and Morgan Wallen, Tim McGraw's Pawn Shop Guitar tour routing through Fenway Park, and The Voice's two‑hour season launch after the Winter Games. Along the way, we talk performance versus polish, the role of auto‑tune in modern crossovers, and why some artists soar on stage even if the trophies never land. Our community brings the heat with the Question of the Day: name an artist who left a famous band and built a real solo legacy. From Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Stevie Nicks, and Peter Gabriel to Darius Rucker and Peter Cetera, your picks fuel a rapid-fire tour through rock, country, pop, and beyond. We balance it with a transparent look at the business: do labels still help, or are they just advances with branding? Is touring truly profitable for rising acts in vans and trailers? And how do indie artists build durability when playlist spikes fade?We round it out with a sharp chart rundown—main and indie—plus a 2006 flashback to Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, and George Strait, showing how yesterday's storytelling still shapes today's sound. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Pat Bergeson joins me on the show this week. Pat is one of those musicians who makes you stop and rethink what's actually possible on a guitar. And on a harmonica.Pat Bergeson is a true master of touch, tone, and taste, and one of the most deeply musical players you'll ever hear.Pat's guitar playing is rooted in the blues, jazz, and country traditions, but it's always personal, always expressive, and always unmistakably his own. He's been here in Nashville for a number of decades now, and has amassed an impressive list of credits, playing on records for artists like Dolly Parton, John Paul White, Suzy Bogguss, Blake Shelton, Alison Krauss and Lyle Lovett. But Pat has never been one to devote himself to session work, so he's led a much more rounded life, with tons of live playing and touring, including his current touring gig in Peter Frampton's band. When I first saw him, it was with the band Les Brers, which was Butch Trucks' band playing mostly Allman Brothers music, and seeing Pat teamed up with the band's other guitarist Jack Pearson, was a one-two punch of two of my absolute favorite guitarists in music city! One of the most meaningful chapters in Pat's career was his close association with the legendary Chet Atkins. Chet didn't just admire Pat's playing - he brought him to Nashville. Pat recorded and performed with Chet, and you can really hear that shared philosophy: musical elegance, deep respect for melody, and an understanding that less can truly be more. Pat played with Chet for years, both on records but also as part of his band that used to have a weekly gig here in Nashville at a little Italian joint downtown. And then there's the harmonica.Pat isn't just a great guitarist — he's one of the finest diatonic harmonica players you'll ever hear. So whether you know him from his work with Chet Atkins, his collaborations with Peter Frampton, his session work, his solo recordings, or his unforgettable harmonica playing, you're in for a great conversation today.Enjoy my conversation with Pat Bergeson! This season is brought to you by our main sponsors Larivée Guitars, Audeze, Izotope, FabFilter, and Chase Bliss. Her very first show was at the legendary Bluebird Cafe, and through songwriting she met her husband, Grammy nominated producer Dave Brainard. After Dave was brutally assaulted in a crosswalk attack, Jenny knew without question that he was her person and that she wanted to be with him forever. Shortly after having her son Bear, Jenny was cast on The Road, starring Keith Urban, Blake Shelton, and Gretchen Wilson, becoming one of 12 finalists while balancing new motherhood and full time touring. It was the hardest and most life changing year of her life and proof that sometimes the bravest thing you can do is keep going.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
