Emily Ann Roberts grew up in Karns, Tennessee, just outside of Knoxville, with hardworking parents who had deep roots in both faith and music. She went to the church her great-grandfather founded more than a century ago— the same place where she sang in public for the very first time. Her dad introduced her to the rougher side of music, too, playing a lot of Johnny Cash and David Allan Coe as they drove around backroads in a pickup truck. After performing for years in a Mexican restaurant and then being discovered on YouTube, she went on to become a finalist on The Voice, but she soon discovered there was plenty more work to do. These days, she's making her mark as a fresh new voice in country music, releasing gritty new songs like “Scratching Out a Living,” and touring with Megan Moroney. Sid talks to Emily about her love of Southern cooking, her alter ego Yeehaw Memaw, and the advice from Blake Shelton that's guided her every step of the way. Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textEver wondered what connects Journey concerts, floating in salt pods, and country music birthdays? This episode takes you on a journey through music history and personal stories that will have you nodding along and laughing out loud.We kick things off with a nostalgic dive into our first concert experiences – Jay's being Journey with Billy Squire opening (complete with the unexpected secondhand marijuana experience at Boston Garden), while Tiffany attended a Michael W. Smith show before graduating to Aerosmith. Our listeners chimed in with everything from Backstreet Boys to Ozzy Osbourne, sparking conversations about how these formative shows shaped our musical tastes. The musical birthday calendar for June reveals fascinating stories about country and rock stars celebrating this month. Did you know Lee Bryce was a songwriter for Garth Brooks before launching his solo career? Or that two members of Korn share June birthdays just days apart? We unpack these fun facts while discussing Ronnie Dunn, Blake Shelton, Gretchen Wilson, Joey Kramer of Aerosmith, and many more June-born musicians. Our music news segment covers Billy Joel's heartbreaking tour cancellation due to his brain disorder diagnosis, the alleged discovery of Freddie Mercury's secret daughter, and Miranda Lambert's refreshingly humble take on her Country Music Hall of Fame prospects. We also spotlight two incredible song recommendations – the genre-bending "Six Feet Deep" by Royale Lynn that perfectly blends country lyrics with metal edge, and the hauntingly beautiful "Ghost of Us" by indie artist Jolie from St. Augustine. The episode wraps with Tiffany's hilarious and anxiety-filled account of experiencing a sensory deprivation float tank for the first time – a rollercoaster of emotions packed into a foot of salt water that perfectly captures the authentic, unfiltered conversation style we're known for.Ready to join our crew? In this episode of "Normal World," Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela react to viral headlines about OnlyFans creator Anna Knight, who was hospitalized after reportedly being with 583 men in six hours. They dive into internet extremes, niche subcultures, behind-the-scenes logistics, and union jokes before torching lazy AMA performances from Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. Crispin returns with chaotic red-carpet commentary, followed by a brutal breakdown of Jennifer Lopez's declining career, Netflix misfire, and Ben Affleck drama. They riff on Chicago baseball brawls and Delta's diversity-driven ads featuring a one-armed hiker. A conversation about Emmanuel Macron's marriage leads to a broader discussion on inappropriate teacher-student relationships and media double standards. Things escalate fast with Aaron Hernandez locker-room stories, including rumors of boundary-crossing behavior, gang affiliations, tragic violence, and college football cover-ups. They debate the scandals around Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K., and Aziz Ansari, exploring how blurred lines between consent, pressure, and regret have shaped public opinion. This week we’ll hear from singer, songwriter, and producer Mark Miller. For over four decades, Mark has been a driving force in music as the lead singer of the legendary country band Sawyer Brown. Beyond the stage, he’s been the guiding hand behind Casting Crowns, producing their music for over twenty years. Now, as Sawyer Brown celebrates its fortieth anniversary with a brand new album and a documentary directed by his daughter, Mark reflects on how his life and career have prayerfully unfolded. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Hope Reagan Harris. Hope never set out to start a global movement. She was simply a wife, a mother, and a former corporate professional searching for her next steps. But when she leaned into where God was leading her, she discovered that purpose doesn’t pause—it multiplies. Well, I don’t have to worry about that when I think of who I am as a man. Because I know who I am in the eyes of Jesus.” - Mark Miller “God sees me right now. I’m not missing out. This week, we welcome Nashville singer/songwriter Dave Barnes. Growing up in a small Mississippi town before moving to Music City, Dave discovered his love for music through a series of seemingly small but pivotal moments. His breakout hit, “God Gave Me You,” became a life-changing milestone, coming to life after Dave had prayed a simple prayer for encouragement, and ultimately catching the attention of country superstar Blake Shelton, who went on to record it as well. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Justin Gambino, a singer/songwriter from Houston, Texas. Justin’s story takes him from a troubled youth where he had a brush with the law to finding his place in this world through music and serving his country. It shows intimacy.” - Dave Barnes “I felt so clearly that God was like, ‘Dave, when you pray for answers, you don't get to qualify the answers I give you. That's not how this works.’ And I was like, ‘Touché Lord. Well played.’” - Dave Barnes “God has really impressed on me this idea that His intention for me and for His children is to not be alone.” - Dave Barnes “I think ninety-nine percent of the time when I have a problem with someone, the more I go toward them, the better and easier that problem gets. The further I get from them, almost 100 percent of the time, it gets worse.” - Dave Barnes “I was completely hopeless, but God stepped in and opened up a door for a different path.” - Justin Gambino “I get choked up every time I share this part of the story because I look back now and wonder about the feelings and the emotions of my earthly father—what he was feeling when he heard the voice of his prodigal son call home.” - Justin Gambino “I just remember falling on my knees. I said, ‘Lord, I can't quit this on my own, but I also know that I've never asked You to take it from me. So I'm asking You to take it from me. Take this hurt, this pain, this guilt.’” - Justin Gambino ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel!
