NHL Insider and host of Ray and Dregs, Darren Dreger joined Matt and Blake for his regular Wednesday appearance. Talked about the difficulty in chasing around rescheduling. Teams are eagerly waiting the release of the full schedule. As nice as it would be for all teams to have a 5-7 day break, the NHL needs that calendar real estate. PA hasn’t had that conversation with the league yet, where the season would be extended. They are going to have to use every day available to them. The concern is how many back to back games there will be, how the travel looks. Talked about Evander Kane and where he might go. Doesn’t understand why it’s the NHL looking into the cross-border transgretions. Thinks that Kane’s team was blindsided by this. The NHL doens’t know what the outcome will be. Talked about the potential of him going to the Oilers. Connor McDavid would involved in those conversations. Dregs understands that Connor isn’t shy about letting managment know what he thinks should be done. Talked about the Canucks GM chair that is still open. His sources are reluctant to say who is coming in for in-person interviews. Talked about the potential of Pat Verbeek. Dregs can’t distance that name. Talked about Verbeek as a player and the sandpaper that is there. Talked about Bobby Clarke throwing Ron Hextall under the bus. Says that Hextall wasn’t that great at sharing his vision around the rest of the organization. Just seems wierd taht Clarke would throw it out there. Jeff Paterson, our Canucks reporter and one half of Rink Wide, joined Matt and Blake. Talked about all he has learned in the last 24 hours with the “Kodak moment” last night. Talked about how good the Panthers are as a team. They are a deep team that can spread their goals around. Goals from defense has become a topic in this town because the Canucks just aren’t getting enough production from the backend. Talked about getting Rathbone in to boost those numbers. JPat has all the time for the conversation but how much longer are they going to get nothing from the right side. Talked about how this team needs to score more goals. Five of the games Bruce has coached, they have scored 1 or 2. You would take contributions from other parts of the lineup. Talked about EP40. Says he couldn’t even figure out how to get shots on. This simplest of tasks are difficult for this guy. One point in four games since Christmas break. Jeff is worried about Pettersson. Talked about Tanner Pearson. He must have gotten a membership to Fight Club for Christmas. Thinks that he has held his own in the last couple fights. Says that he has played to his strengths under Boudreau. Another special edition of Sekeres and Price today as we head to the holiday season. Gregg Bell joined Matt and Blake to talk about the Seahawks. Gregg doesn’t think the owner will want to clean house there. She is too occupied with the the Trail Blazers in Portland. There is no doubt RW3 isn’t the same player. He has the most 4th quarter comeback wins since 2012. If it’s not an issue of health, it’s an issue of quality. They could seriously consider making their OC a fall guy. Thinks that RW3 not wanting to get hit by these lineman anymore is affecting his performance. Likened it to crashing your call into a brick wall 15 times a day. After 10 plus years, you just won’t want to do that anymore. Talked about Covid and how it has affected the team. Talked about a number of plays vs the Rams. Darren Dreger, NHL Insider and Host of Ray and Dregs Podcast joined Matt and Blake. Started off about talking about his Quaker campaign and how it came to be. Talked about looking forward to the World Juniors. This is the one time he allows himself to be a fan and enjoy a few beers in the garage. It’s a good year for Canada but the US will have a good team as well. As long as they can pull off the event without any major Covid outbreak will be good. Talked about the Olympics and other major international championships. Thinks that any player available will embrace a chance at the World Championship tournament. Talked about what he knows about Canadian players in Europe filling in the Olympic void. Specifically brought up Landon Ferraro who Ray says would “fly the plane to China” in order to play. Talked about the path forward for all parties when it comes to the Olympics. This tournament matters. We might not get another chance to see the mega stars of previous tournaments and mega stars of today like McDavid. Talked about GM candidates for the Canucks. There are so many on the list and Rutherford isn’t ready to give names yet. Brought up Patrik. Allvin. He certainly has the history with Rutherford and the main background that fits into the whole piece of the pie. Talked about the level of depth inside an NHL franchise. Players are now getting packages with over 200 questions. Talked about Jennifer Botterill. Doesn’t know if it’s fair to call her the leader in the clubhouse. It’s very clear that she is increibly smart. Dregs brought up. Cheryl Pounder and names like Cami Granato. It’s all about making your organization as deep as possible. Talked about how long it’ll take to see ‘Trader Jim’ in action. Would say that chances are slim that we will see one in the immediate future. Five percent or less that we see a trade before the turn of the calendar. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Jonathan Dahlen of the San Jose Sharks joined Matt and Blake. Talked about his rookie year. Says he just came into camp to make the team. He has been given a great opportunity and lots of ice time. Wasn’t really that confident that he would make the team. Just took it day by day and worked hard everyday. Fortunately it worked and he is trying to do the same things. Doesn’t see his success in Europe as a comparable to EP40 because they are different players. Talked about how well he knows Elias. Goes back to Timra and playing on a line there with each other. Played a lot together and it was a lot of fun. Says they FaceTime here and there. Met a couple times in the summer. Says they are good friends. Didn’t talk a lot about playing together with the Canucks when he was in Utica. He wasn’t playing well enough there. Will be awesome to be on the same ice sheet tomorrow. Had some low confidence in Utica. Talked about his dad, who played 1000 games in the league. Says it is awesome to have that influence and to be playing in the same organization as he did for 3.5 years. Talked about playing with Couture. He is such a good player and a great Captain. Talked about his hometown in Sweden where Edler is from too. His dad is also a big deal there. Darren Dreger joined Matt and Blake. Doesn’t know much about the Canucks that have tested positive. Doesn’t want to dive in. Charters that don’t take off peaks his interest, though. Talked about any overarching rules by the NHL as a maximum amount of players testing positive before they postpone games. Thinks that conference vs conference are very hard to make up, especially with three week olympic break. Says that it is dependent on the spread within the room and what can be managed. The NHL pays closer attention when teams spread to other teams. Talked about what he knows about Derek Clancey. Says that Jim Rutherford is a guy that gets ahead of problems. Recognizes things then acts. He needs guys that can hit the ground running and Clancey is that guy. Our Canucks reporter, Jeff Paterson joined in his regular spot. Started off by talking about the surge in Covid cases amongst the Canucks. Wonders about the status of the next game, in San Jose. Talked about the game vs the Blue Jackets. Thinks the team has gotten the bounces with who has tested positive. As this goes deeper, it will affect more important players. Talked about the Canucks hiring an AGM before a GM. Talked about the potential of Boudreau winning the Jack Adams. Thinks the voters would take into account that he had three quarters of a season to work with.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Plenty of talk on potential GM candidates from Matt and Blake. The Welcome Matt on the Canucks franchise value according to Forbes. Host of the Ray and Dregs Podcast and NHL Insider, Darren Dreger joined Matt and Blake. Talked about how quickly the house cleaning materialized with the Canucks. Says that was surprising to see. Talked about what convinced Boudreau to come here. Would be surprised if there was a clause in BB’s contract that would see him not getting paid next season. You have to look at the big picture and who the next GM and POHO will be. If FA can convince Rutherford to do both jobs then he is the man for the job. Believes there is legit interest. Dregs says the fit needs to be right for JR. Talked about the potential return of Gillis and Gilman. Thinks that nobody should be surprised about that. Dregs thinks that Gilman will be a GM in the NHL. He has had good success in his 20 year management career. Thinks that the Blackhawks could have interest in him as well. Doesn’t believe that anyone has gotten permission to speak to him. Darren hopes that a blocker wouldn’t be put out by the Leafs. Hoping that the Aquilini family are looking outside the box. Talked about Stan Smyl. Wonders if he feels like this is the mountain he is willing to climb at this point in his life. If the answer is yes, how could he not be considered. Wonders how much the budget will be considered. Circled back to Rutherford because he can fill 2 roles. Talked about George McPhee. Jackie Redmond of the NHL Network joined Matt and Blake to talk about what makes Bruce Boudreau so great to work with. There is this jolly aspect to him. Doesn’t think she has ever seen Bruce in a bad mood. They worked together enough to know that he doesn’t let anything fester. Says it is hilarious to see him laying the ground work in press conferences. Claims she didn’t hear him swear a lot outside the set. Talked about their shared love of wrestling. Bruce is a massive fan of the WWE. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Sekeres & Price kicked off with a huge announcement as Matt and Blake welcome the Rink Wide - Post Game to the family. Hosted by Andrew Wadden and Jeff Paterson, they will have a podcast-only version for Canucks fans to consume. The guys roll through their thoughts on opening night, including a great game between Vegas and the debut of the Seattle Kraken. Matt was not impressed with Commissioner Gary Bettman and his dig at ESPN. TSN Insider, Darren Dreger joined the program. Started off with a bit of a dig at Ray Ferraro. Moved from that to the kicking motion in last nights game winning goal for Vegas. Says that if you are skilled enough to make that kind of play, it should count. Talked about what he is hearing with the Canucks and how they will do this year. DD says it’s all positive, speaking with brass around the league. GM’s around the league think they are a playoff worthy team, despite some questions on defence. There is a lot of faith in Demko and the tandem as a whole with Halak. Talked about Hamonic and Sutter and the latest on them. Jeff Paterson in his regular slot and started chatting about the big post game announcement today. Talked about the stars and how they make up the core and that is something to be excited about. Talked about the lack of experience on the d-line. JPat says this doesn’t look like the makings of a contending D-care. Talked about Kyle Burroughs. Talked about MacEwen being claimed on Waivers. Be sure to check out the first ever Rink Wide Post Game edition follow the game!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
