Adam Schefter reported that the Chicago Bears called the Steelers to ask about trading for Mike Tomlin. The Steelers did not even entertain the call and Donny says that is malpractice on the Steelers part. With everything that is happening, to not even entertain the idea is not smart at all. Donny then admits no matter what Tomlin will be the coach until he no longer wants to be here. Phone callers chime in on the reported Bears interest in trading for Mike Tomlin. Hockey Talk! On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to news that the Penguins have waived goalie Tristan Jarry with the intent of sending him to their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton affiliate in the AHL. Why was it the right move for GM Kyle Dubas, despite Jarry's lucrative contract? Will the NHL goaltending group be better moving forward with Joel Blomqvist and Alex Nedeljkovic? Was former GM Jim Rutherford picking Matt Murray over Marc-Andre Fleury still the right move in hindsight, given what it led to with Jarry? How much does the Jarry contract taint Dubas moving forward? And what can the Penguins expect from star Evgeni Malkin amid his return?
Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown as they went around the league and talked about some of the big stories that have developed over the last week. They started things off by talking about the Pittsburgh Penguins' decision to place veteran goalie Tristan Jarry on waivers. He's just a few years removed from signing a long-term extension with the club and while he hasn't performed up to that contract this season, both Frank and Jason took issue with the Penguins using him as a scapegoat. That led to a bigger-picture conversation about what Dubas has done since taking over as General Manager. From one of the worst stories in the league to one of the best, the guys then looked at the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are currently in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Kirill Marchenko and Zach Werenski have both been spectacular and the team is playing unreal hockey. Can they hold onto this playoff spot?Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about where John Klingberg could potentially sign, the Chicago Blackhawks deadline plans, and whether or not Kyle Dubas will be around when the Penguins finally get back to the playoffs, whenever that might be.To wrap things up, they talked about Connor Hellebuyck running away with the Vezina Trophy and how much pressure the Winnipeg Jets are facing this year to go on a deep playoff run.1:10 - Penguins waive Jarry15:30 - Blue Jackets keep rolling24:00 - Buy or Sell (Klingberg, Hawks deadline plans, Dubas' future)42:10 - Hellebuyck & the Jets47:00 - Frustration in TorontoWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? PG columnist Jason Mackey joined the show. Jason thinks the Erik Karlsson contract is worse than Tristan Jarry, but it's hard to defend a guy that got put on waivers and sent to the minors. Jason said he can't see how there isn't some question into the job that has been done by Kyle Dubas so far. Jason doesn't think they are anywhere close to a playoff team, despite what the standings may say. What kind of expectations should there be for Joel Blomqvist in net? Jason thinks the Penguins are in a worse situation than the Steelers, citing that the Steelers are a few aggressive moves away – the Penguins are several. Are the Penguins willing to commit to a rebuild?
It has been 24 hours and no team has claimed Tristan Jarry. How bad of a contract is it? It might not even be the worst on the team. Bob thinks Kyle Dubas is getting impatient and will likely make a trade to shake the roster. Mark isn't sure who the starting quarterback is going to be next season, but is leaning towards Justin Fields. Mark thinks the Steelers will approach TJ Watt about a contract extension.
On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to the Penguins' recent surge into Stanley Cup playoff positioning. Is the power play's recent success real? Or just a short burst of production? Can Michael Bunting and Philip Tomasino maintain their recent success? And how should GM Kyle Dubas react to these promising trends? Should he add to the roster before the NHL trade deadline with an eye toward a playoff berth? Or should he still plan to sell assets like Rickard Rakell, Marcus Pettersson and Erik Karlsson with the goal of helping Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang while they're still on the roster in 2025-26? Jason tackles those questions and more, then talks a little about the Pirates first base situation. Should GM Ben Cherington have considered bringing Josh Bell back before he signed an affordable deal with the Washington Nationals over the weekend? And how much pressure is Cherington under for the Spencer Horwitz trade to work out, given other 1B options that have been available?
