This week on It Was a Thing on TV it's our third annual Lost in Translation week. First, the concept of home videos shows originated in Japan in the late 1980s and branched out all around the world. In 1992 in Australia, a show aired which used footage deemed too racy or of questionable taste, titled Australia's Naughtiest Home Videos. It didn't make it through one airing. Fast forward to 2019, where a similar version was tried in America, titled Videos After Dark. At least that ran for the full airing. Due to language and questionable content, listener discretion is advised. Then, we continue with Lost in Translation week with a small show whose promotion was equally small and, not surprisingly, whose audiences and ratings were just as small. Small Fortune didn't last long in the UK, yet it was still imported to the States where its run was equally short. Mark and Nicole welcomed famed ventriloquist April Brucker and her cast of puppets...excuse me...Textile Americans to the lighter side of the dark side April has been featured on MTV, VIdeos After Dark with Bob Saget (showing how to fold a towel oh so suggestively) ABC's What Would You Do? where she was so convincing that a man threatened to call the police and Judge Jerry Springer where her puppet May flirted unabashedly with Jerry while trying to get equal pay for textile americans. May flirted with Mark too and answered some salacious questions such as if April has ever had a threesome with her textile friends. April also brought out Donald J. Tramp and Mortimer who flirted shamelessly with Nicole. April is now headlining at the new English Hotel in the Arts District of Las Vegas and has a YouTube show April Live! which Mark was a part of. April also taught Nicole and Mark how to talk without moving their lips which may come in handy someday. The fangirling is high on Whine Down this week, first with Danny Tanner himself, Bob Saget. He tells us some legendary stories from his comedy career, the early days of Full House, and his new show Videos After Dark. We talk about using comedy as a way to cope with grief, and he opens up about the death of his sister, and his work in raising awareness for scleroderma, the disease that took her life. And then we challenge Mike’s skepticism when Hollywood Medium Tyler Henry stops by. He explains his process for interpreting the supernatural, and tells us about something he saw in Jana that nobody else could have predicted. Do you believe that men get colds “worse” than women do? Mike and Jana definitely disagree on this. And we hear the results of their tantric therapy session. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

"Videos After Dark" won't be a competition like "America's Funniest Home Videos". Instead, the show will have a "nightclub-style feel" . . . and Bob will perform material throughout the show. The show will air late, at 10:00 P.M. in most markets . . . as opposed to 7:00 P.M. Sunday evenings. The new show will also air on ABC and it features the clips that "America's Funniest Home Videos" chose NOT to air over the years, because they were, quote, "too risqué.". There's no premiere date yet, but it'll debut sometime next year.
