Margo Watson and Ann Takasaki are joined by Kathie Horman, LaReita Berky, and Dennis Lifferth to discuss the Model of Powerful Impact and the power of charitable giving. “Charity, being charitable, is critical to our well being, our soul, who we are as people, and being part of the human race.” - Margo Watson “I have MS, and I struggle with it, but I'm doing great. And I thought I can give what I can while I still can. And so it's been a real joy to me… I just love doing it, is what it boils down to.” - Kathie Horman “When you meet these people who come in with different objectives, some are providing for others and some are picking them (computers) up, and you see the spark of hope and happiness in their lives, it just makes you want to do it again. … And so I'm grateful for this idea, that within each person is this spark of divinity. And if we can see that and help them feel better when they leave, with a little more confidence, it makes this effort well worthwhile.” - Dennis Lifferth “I know we have a duty. That's true. We all have a duty to help one another. But there's more to it than just a duty. There's the feeling that comes when we're of service to somebody else.” - Dennis Lifferth “It takes a lot of people to make a system work, and they all make a very important contribution.” - Dennis Lifferth “This is an actual part of our family mode. This is what we do. We help. We help where we can help, when we can help, with what we can help with.” - LaReita Berky “Some people are able to give large donations. Some give small, some just give monthly, and some just give frequent flier miles. I mean, there's all kinds of ways to donate.” - Margo Watson “I've given a lot of time. And when I developed MS, I could no longer play my violin … so I donated it to a student who didn't have one. And she's been so thrilled. … There are definitely ways you can help. Sometimes it's just a pat on the back or a hug.” - Kathie Horman “The main body of human beings on this earth are so grateful to be tied to each other through family.” - Ann Takasaki “When people think, “donation,” the immediate thought is cash, right? Card, cash, check. But there's so many other types of donations. There's the in-kind donations, which is what Dennis is doing with the laptops. There's, for our organization, we receive book donations because our focus is literacy, because we believe that when a woman is empowered and knows how to read, then that changes her life and her family's trajectory, of what's going to become of them. You know, reading opens up a world of possibilities.” - LaReita Berky “Receiving donations for what an organization is needing, not just cash, cash is always appreciated, but for what specifically an organization needs, not just what you think they need, but ask, “What do you need?” That's one of the greatest things.” - LaReita Berky “Other ways that people can donate besides the money … is time. Is there something that you can do to help the organization with donating an hour or two a week or more if you are able?” - LaReita Berky “I think one of the fears people have in donating their time is they don't feel like they're qualified, when in fact, the one on one is very simple, just to listen, just to help. Most people are grateful for any attention they may receive. … To volunteer doesn't take money, doesn't take thing, but sometimes it's just your time and your interest in that person.” - Dennis Lifferth “It combats depression when you see that you can help somebody else. It combats self absorption. It just makes you a better person when you can help somebody else realize their dreams.” - Margo Watson Margo Watson is the Director of Outreach Marketing and Fundraising for Big Ocean Women. Her background is quite diverse. She has a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communications and Music. Her dynamic talents led her first to critically acclaimed performances in countless Theater and Concert stages around the country as a soprano soloist and lead actress which included musicals, opera, operetta, orchestral works, comedies, movies, commercials and on-camera TV host. These experiences helped prepare her later as a young widow to work in the fields of in-house public relations and marketing for high tech, retail, medical industries and promotion for celebrities, so she could support her young family. Margo has had extensive experience as an on-camera talent, marketing, advertising, public relations-internal and external, public speaking, production, diverse writing for magazines, commercials, press releases, infomercials, books, press kits, speeches and such. She hopes her skills will be useful to help Big Ocean Women spread their mission of empowering women worldwide, through education, training and support, to recognize their divine worth, abilities and capabilities to change their homes, their communities and the world. Margo has six adult children and 9 grandchildren which are the most precious gifts to her. She also loves her dear husband Jay D Blades, her dog Toby and two horses, Noche and Goldie. This Japanese heritage is not the most important piece of Ann's identity, but it is valued and preserved. Ann also values faith, immediate and extended family relationships, and friendships. Big Ocean Women provides meaningful and important experiences for all of these. Ann strives to give her time to God's work, and sees Big Ocean Women as an important vehicle to do that work. EPISODE 148 SEASON 4 | Art is subjective, right? So how can you teach someone what art is? It's often a subject that as homeschoolers we may not think to teach or shy away from teaching because teaching art can be intimidating! But one way to look at teaching art is that yes it is subjective so everyone appreciates something different but it is also a chance for you to teach your child other skills as they are being creative. Being creative or artistic requires them to make decisions, what color here, what medium should I use? It also stretches their brain to come up with new ideas or view things in a different way. Join Janna and her guest Karen Barge as they discuss art, and how it can elevate your homeschool and also set a wonderful basis for your student as they grow with decision-making and more. ABOUT OUR GUEST | Karen Barge is a professional illustrator and artist who now teaches online art classes at Sunny Art Academy. Over 20 years, she taught various art classes for ages 5 to 85. We greatly value the unique and contributing role of families. Margo Watson is joined by Gloria Boberg and Dr. Tres Tanner. “Families are the unit in society which is especially comprised of a man and a woman who are husband and wife who are bonded so that they can meet each other's physical and emotional needs as well as to, among other things, have the opportunity to procreate and bring children into the world so they can then care for those children” - Dr. Tanner “The family is the stability of life. When you count on one another, and you form the foundation to build upon and to trust each other and learn from each other. If someone tries to take that apart, to me it's like they're trying to pull the power from the family unit.” - Gloria Boberg “When there is a family nucleus, there's always a strong foundation when we can support each other, love each other unconditionally. We, then have, love and respect for each other. Through communication, we learn how to make a healthy family.” - Gloria Boberg “When a woman goes through nine months of carrying that fetus in her uterus and then birthing that child, that involves a high level of sacrifice and pain and commitment, which leads to the kind of motivation that [other people] will never have the same level of commitment as has a mother.” - Dr. Tanner “One of the cool things about families is that we learn from one another. Parents learn from children as well as children from parents. So it's a really cool unit of society, where you live together, and you learn together, and you reinforce each other with that unconditional love.” - Dr. Tanner “You have to understand that a human being is not disposable. You don't throw anyone away.” - Gloria Boberg “One of the central reasons why there are so many problems is because of selfishness, and or, related to that is we live in a very much of an individually focused society and so it's not natural… for people to think in larger terms, and we need to do that.” - Dr. Tanner “People can and do change, are capable of turning things around… so you need to make sure you always stay focused on the hope that people are capable of learning how to be really strong and effective people, because what happens is once they start to do that, it becomes self reinforcing and they love it and they want to learn more and more and do more things to stay that way.” - Dr Tanner “For people that have no family, or they have dysfunctional families, that does not mean that you can't be healthy and build your own family, and that's really important to remember.” - Gloria Boberg “Part of building yourself up is to teach and guide other people to help them learn. We can share these experiences by what we know.” - Gloria Boberg “Going back again to the family unit, it is so critical in the development of individuals, but also in the development of the community around us” - Margo Watson “There are lots of people in this world that are quite alone, and they don't have these family networks that they can depend upon, nevertheless, even a person, or a single parent, trying to do their very best to work with a child, without any other family support, can learn to become a very effective family unit, just those two of them, and what happens is when they develop that, and the great feeling of relief and satisfaction that comes, because they're applying correct principles with one another, and they're getting tremendous satisfaction from that.” - Dr Tanner “Anyone out there can realize there are wonderful things that they can do to make their lives better and really find great satisfaction even if they haven't had the advantage of having had an initial exposure to that.” - Dr. Tanner “The husband-wife relationship is really the core relationship in life, because if that is going well, they're in a much better position, that couple, to do a much more effective job of parenting.” - Dr. Tanner Dr. Tanner's 6 basic practices for a thriving relationship: Share care Connect Confront Resolve Grow “Learn how to talk and have respect for each other.” - Gloria Boberg “Families have to understand there's give and take, and you have to learn, and you have to learn ways to communicate. I think having your own set of boundaries is important. You also have to understand the perspective of where other people are coming from.” - Gloria Boberg “There is nothing that can even compare with the kind of benefit to society that happens when you are committed to your children as a mother or your spouse and you can just set the tone of having happy relationships functional people, there's nothing quite like that and you can feel proud and grateful for the opportunity you have.” - Dr. Tanner “Look for the good, because there's a lot of it!” - Dr. Tanner Dr. Tres Tanner has dedicated his career to strengthening families. He has helped thousands of individuals, couples and families in over 25 years' experience as a Professional Relationships–Life Coach / Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. He also has over 25 years' experience teaching and training people in Seminars, Workshops, Professional Speaking Engagements, and in undergraduate and graduate University Classes, Marriage Retreats, etc. Margo Watson is the Director of Outreach Marketing and Fundraising for Big Ocean Women. She hopes her skills will be useful to help Big Ocean Women spread their mission of empowering women worldwide. She has six adult children and 9 grandchildren which are the most precious gifts to her.

What a blessing to be with our friend, Jolin Wilks McElroy for a holiday conversation on art and spirituality. Jolin and Armin first met in the 1990s while working together at the art materials and frame store of Good's of Evanston. During her time working at Good's led Jolin to rethink her calling as a artist and pursue another path to attend a theological seminary for a Masters in Divinity. Here is her bio in more detail: Jolin Wilks McElroy has been Pastor at First Christian Church in Charlotte since July of 2000. During her tenure there, she has watched the congregation grow into presence in the Charlotte and Dilworth communities–branching out into service through the Dilworth Soup Kitchen, supporting many missions and outreach groups, and providing a meeting place for classes and events. She has also rejoiced as this church has been transformed by other cultural groups joining the congregation. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Colorado State University in 1990, Jolin Wilks intended to paint for a living. The call to ministry challenged her to consider a new direction for her life. In 1995 she enrolled at Lexington Theological Seminary and received her Masters in Divinity in 1999. Rev. McElroy still finds some time to draw and paint while also serving the church in more traditional ways. In addition to gallery shows and auctions, First Christian Church has a display of her pastel portraits of church members lining the walls of the education building. Another exhibit, Holy Communion, a series of watercolor portraits of Disciples of Christ members and leaders, began traveling the denomination since the Fall of 2004. Because of her dual vocations of art and ministry, she has been a desired speaker on the topic of creativity and spirituality for retreats and workshops. One significant endeavor was sketching portraits of 33 children of two Head Start programs for the benefit of their families, sponsored by The Craddock Center in Cherry Log, Georgia. Prior to accepting the call to her current position, Rev. McElroy served as: Associate Minister to First Christian Church, Falls Church, VA (1998-2000); Chaplain Intern at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, DC (summer of 1998); and Pastor of First Christian Church, Carlisle KY (1995-1998). In addition to her work at First Christian, Rev. McElroy has been active in the life of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at the regional level, and was the recipient of a Clergy Renewal Grant from The Lilly Endowment in 2004. Other organizations in which Rev. McElroy has been active include: Charlotte Clergy Coalition for Justice (CCCJ) 2014 – present, Crisis Assistance Ministry (2002-present); United Family Services (2001-2006); General Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in North Carolina (2001-05); North Carolina Regional Commission on Faith and Understanding (2001-02). Born in Iowa City, IA, Jolin Wilks McElroy was raised in Mt. Prospect, IL, where her parents Alan and Irvana Wilks still reside. Rev. McElroy currently lives in Charlotte, NC, with her husband Tom and their young son. We are honored that Jolin joined us for episode 39 of our podcast. During the interview you will hear her quote Frederick Buechner: “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet.” Art and ministry fulfill that for her. Thank you very much, Jolin! Nothing brings people together more than music and performing; Michael Mott got the best of both worlds as he prepares for his second annual holiday show, "Michael Mott & Friends,” happening in December, along with the release of a brand new single performed by the incomparable Jessica Vosk. Michael was also a professional actor for seven years and while he was grateful for all the work, he realized he was never fully happy. This led him to apply to the prestigious BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, which subsequently changed his life.. Aside from acting, he's also a successful composer and has always been passionate about music. He talks about finding his own style, writing for another person, his issues with the current things on Broadway, the craft that goes into making a musical theatre song, and the indescribable feeling and comfort music brings him that he wants to give back to listeners. A decade later, amongst all his writing and composing success, he even finds himself accepting roles again. Michael Mott is an award-winning composer, lyricist, songwriter and vocal producer who's also recognized internationally for his talent. He graduated from Ithaca College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Musical Theatre Performance and is currently living and working in New York. Michael had a successful acting career in the late 2000s, performing in many Off-Broadway, regional and national touring shows, including "Milk and Honey", "I'd Rather Be Right", "Kiss Me, Kate", "Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?", "9 to 5", "A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline", and "Miracle on 34th Street". There she discovered graphic design and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Later, as an entrepreneur, she started Vegan Nepal in Lexington, Kentucky in 2017. In 2019, Babita put her full focus on her passion project, a beautifully photographed cookbook titled “Plant-Based Himalaya”. Episode 30 of Paranormal Stories. This week the books are 'A Walk in the Physical: Understanding the Human Experience Within the Larger Spiritual Context' by Christian Sundberg and 'Intersections: A True Story of Extraterrestrial Contact' by Lesley Mitchell-Clarke, & Wes Roberts.Christian SundbergYou existed before your human experience, and you will exist after.Drawing from his unique pre-birth memories, Christian Sundberg provides an encouraging framework for understanding the nature of the human experience within the larger spiritual context. A Walk in the Physical is a non-linear reality model that boils down the very vast into succinct accessible language. More than a set of ideas though, it is a tool meant to point you towards the portion of yourself that already exists right now beyond Earth. At the heart of the book is the theme of love, and it describes why authentic love – even in small matters – is so deeply important to our human journey.BioChristian has worked for over 15 years as a project manager for complex nuclear pump and valve manufacturing projects. Christian is also a public speaker, having presented at over 80 events. When Christian was a young child he remembered his existence before coming to Earth. While that memory left him completely for his early adult life, it spontaneously returned at the age of 30 as Christian took up a meditation practice and went through a personal awakening journey. He also began to have Out of Body Experiences (OBEs). Christian now seeks to remind others in at least a small part of who we really are beneath the human “play.” Christian is the author of the book A Walk in the Physical, which attempts to succinctly describe the larger spiritual context in which we exist and the importance of love in our human journey. https://awalkinthephysical.com/https://www.amazon.com/Walk-Physical-Understanding-Experience-Spiritual-ebook/dp/B097CHLN7C/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=Lesley Mitchell-Clarke, Wes RobertsI never thought it would be me. My name is Malory Christensen. I was born in Montana, but raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. I graduated from Westminster College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree: with an emphasis in Ceramics, and a Minor in Psychology. Upon my completion at Westminster, I moved to Seattle, Washington to pursue a graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, with a specialization in Art Therapy. Having earned my Master's Degree from Antioch University, I moved back home to Utah, and am working as an Art Therapist and Marriage and Family Therapist. In my free time I love exploring different art mediums and challenging myself to try new things. Art has always been a way for me to relax and de-stress and is one of the best coping tools I have found. While they are complex, the tedious process in which I apply my patterns has always been therapeutic for me. Musitations™: Exploring Music, Meditation, Creativity and Wisdom
Thrilled to have my good friend, colleague and fellow Multi-Grammy® nominee Will Clipman on Musitations™ for the kick off of season 2! I have admired Will and his profound work in world music and percussion for more than 3 decades! It is such an honor and treat to have him on the show. Little did I know we had so much in common; both being published poets, devoted world music multi-instrumentalists and most importantly survivors of a near death experience - which is how we connected while collaborating on a project for the IANDS (International Association of Near Death Experiences) conference last year. We immediately connected and began discussing doing an episode on Musitations™ together which is now live! We discuss the meaning of mythopoetic, conscious creativity and the importance of having "serious fun" when creating - as well as the importance of listening, stillness and silence. Here is a bit more about Will: Will Clipman is a poet, percussionist, performing and recording artist, maskmaker, storyteller and educator. He has been nominated for seven GRAMMY® Awards, including one for his solo world music album Pathfinder, and his pan-global instrumental palette is featured in his Planet of Percussion® workshop and performance. Will has recorded over seventy albums, including thirty-five for Canyon Records, the world's foremost producer of Native American music. Will's poetry is widely published, including his book Dog Light (Wesleyan University Press). His masks and mythopoetic storytelling are showcased in his workshop and performance Myths & Masks®, which is available as a DVD. Will has conducted over three hundred artist-in-residence programs for elementary, middle and high schools, colleges and universities, senior centers, adult and juvenile prisons, hospitals, libraries, resorts and retreat centers. His work as an educator has been recognized with an Arizona Commission on the Arts Decade of Distinguished Service Award and three Governor's Arts Awards nominations. Will has toured throughout the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as in Germany, Canada, Morocco and Russia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Syracuse University and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Arizona.
