Since I invented the 6:00 p.m. show at the Comedy Cellar, it was only natural to tell Sarah Silverman she should practice her Netflix special there in front of a live audience. So, the Super Secret Pop Up Show was on the board but none of the audience knew who it was and since I was opening for her, they may as well have said, "before we bring up Bruce Springsteen, the comedy stylings of. . ." oy. But, classic and you can hear all about that and my nutty friend who wanted to cruise around Newark, NJ in the middle of the night and a night performing at the classic NYC Cabaret Club, Don't Tell Mama's in Times Square. What a show this week! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Similar to Season 2, Episode 1 when I sat down with Doug “Pops” Smith, who I like to refer to as a “Wise Old Owl”, in this episode I have the pleasure of connecting with a friend that I consider in the same first-class league, Mr. Tom White.  Tom and I met when I first called on the five-generation Italian food products company, Pastene & Co, soliciting their label business back in the early 2000's, and although he was a client for the next 15+ years, first and foremost Tom remains a friend and confidante.  We share common bonds that include our love of our wives and daughters, our mutual love-hate relationship with the game of golf, and shared interest in food & cold craft beer, and our appreciation for what really matters in life… family.Tom enlightens me with tales of his love of Traffic's classic album, John Barley Corn Must Die and 70's classic rock band, Savoy Brown's hit Tell Mama.  We debate a bit over whether Tell Mama is in fact an Etta James song or a Savoy Brown song.  And Tom shares the story how he serenades his 6-month old granddaughter, Bailey (who arrived on his 71st birthday) to the likes of James Taylor and the Beatles' lullaby, I Will.  Clearly, grandparenting agrees with Tom, and I am lucky to consider this Wise Old Owl a friend.  In fact, we BOTH consider ourselves to be two of the luckiest men on the face of the earth.Join us, and let's see where the energy takes us!Isn't She Lovely / Stevie Wonderhttps://music.apple.com/us/album/isnt-she-lovely/1625371876?i=1625372484I Will / Beatleshttps://music.apple.com/us/album/i-will/1441133180?i=1441133910Midnight Flier / The Eagleshttps://music.apple.com/us/album/midnight-flyer-remastered/1440199153?i=1440199974Tell Mama / Savoy Brownhttps://music.apple.com/us/album/tell-mama/1443639908?i=1443640153Tell Mama / Grateful Dead w/ Etta James https://youtu.be/G_zKuqHzYks?si=VqqoV_ENBl0Q6aWZ

It focuses on a Philly friend group stuck at a Waffle House pre-pandemic, and each of their journeys through the year, only to arrive back where they started - but with a slightly new outlook on life. In this episode of the podcast Josh Asker the editor of 'The Socialist,' explains the tactics and strategies needed to build a mass movement against the far right. Socialism 2024 Get your tickets for socialism here: www.socialism.org.uk Do you want to be part of building the socialist opposition that we need to end austerity, poverty, climate crisis, racism and discrimination, and war? Taking place on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 November, the Socialism 2024 weekend will arm you with the ideas to fight back under the Starmer government against the capitalist system it defends. Socialism 2024 will be taking place only days after Rachel Reeves' autumn budget which will show Labour's plans to make the working class pay for the crisis of the capitalist system while the rich get richer. Join hundreds of trade unionists, students, community campaigners, and those who just want to find out about socialist ideas to discuss and debate ideas to change the world. The centrepiece of the event will be the main rally on the Saturday evening where you will hear from leading socialists. There will be over 40 workshops running throughout Saturday and Sunday on all sorts of topics. And there will be closing rallies on the Sunday afternoon. Smash racism The large counter-protests on 7 August pointed to the potential to build an anti-racist movement. We must challenge attempts by racists and the populist and far right to take advantage of the anger at Starmer's attacks on living standards. The workshops in this theme at Socialism 2024 are an opportunity to look at the ideas needed to do that and include: You can't have capitalism without racism: The origins of racism and the struggle to end it today Capitalism and Islamophobia After the riots: the role of the trade unions in a Community Defence Stewards organisation Further Reading: Lessons from the Fight against the Far Right: The working class has a long history of mobilising to resist attempts by far-right forces to attack and intimidate our communities. The Socialist Party and its predecessor Militant has a long history of taking part in those struggles, including at times playing a leading role. In all these struggles, the fight to stop the far right is completely bound with the fight for a socialist alternative, and mobilising the working class to fight for decent jobs and homes, fully funded services, and all our communities need. https://www.socialistparty.org.uk/articles/130801/02-10-2024/lessons-from-the-fight-against-the-far-right/ The first lightning flashes – and what to do One month after Sir Keir Starmer's Labour party was ‘swept to power' by a paltry 20% of the electorate – the lowest support base of any government since the introduction of universal male suffrage in 1918 – violent protests and riots, instigated by far-right groups, broke out across the country. For those trapped in asylum-seekers' hostels or mosques under brutal attack from gangs of rioters, the experience was terrifying. More generally, many Black, Asian and Muslim people feel that their safety is increasingly under threat. Tell Mama, a monitoring group tracking Islamophobic hate crimes, reported a five-fold increase in threats to Muslims compared to the same time last year. https://socialismtoday.org/the-first-lightning-flashes-and-what-to-do

What would you do? What will you do? In the election run-up, Peter & Nathan are talking about musicals that deal with political unrest and social change (don't worry, it's still fun!). We begin with the 1966 Broadway classic Cabaret, one of the darkest, kinkiest, and most-enduring musicals of all time.   We talk about: – Willkommen / Two Ladies / The Money Song: The "decadence" depicted by the emcee and the performers of the Kit Kat Klub (KKK, anyone?) in 1930s Berlin on the eve of Nazism. Does Cabaret hold this very queer decadence as responsible for the rise of fascism, or is there something deeper at work? – Married / So What / What Would You Do?   Bob Fosse's 1972 film version of Cabaret eliminates most of the traditional musical theatre story exemplified in the romance between Fraulein Schneider & Herr Schultz. But these two characters—and the songs that Kander & Ebb wrote for them—carry much of the show's political weight – and its emotional heart. Is Fraulein Schneider secretly Cabaret's protagonist? – Don't Tell Mama & Cabaret:  We talk about one of Cabaret's most well-known characters, Sally Bowles. What does she mean when she sings that "life is a cabaret?" – Tomorrow Belongs to Me:  The incredible music of Cabaret – hymns, patriotic anthems, folk songs and music hall ditties – raises provocative questions about entertainment, pleasure, emotional release, and the rise of demonic ideologies. Religion traffics in some of the same territory. Is good music morally neutral... or not?   You'll hear Joel Grey, Jill Haworth, Lotte Lenya, Jack Gilford and the cast of the 1966 Original Broadway Cast – as well as Mark Lambert on the 1972 film soundtrack singing “Tomorrow Belongs to Me”.

We unravel the spiritual consequences our words can invoke, echoing biblical wisdom about the strength of the tongue. “Her voice is the voice of the fountain of youth and her musical spirit lets you drink -- from her voice, from her dance, from her spirit. And Jenny Burton becomes Isis incarnate.” ~Laurence Holder, Routes Magazine Jenny Burton had a long and varied career as a superb vocalist working successfully in Dance Music, R&B, Gospel and Inspirational Music. In the late 80s and early 90s Burton had four national number one R&B/Dance hits -- "One More Shot," rose to Billboard's number five slot and led to Burton's first major-label solo deal. Atlantic Records released her first LP, "In Black & White," which included the hit single, “I Remember What You Like". “Bad Habits,” off her second album was a #1 dance hit in America and rose to #12 on the R&B charts. She has to her credits as well two gold records from films -- Harry Belafonte's Beat Street and White Nights starring Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Moving more into an Inspirational direction, she created with producer/composer Peter Link, The Jenny Burton Experience, an award winning Inspirational group ran for seven years to sold out standing room only audiences at New York City's "Don't Tell Mama". The Jenny Burton Experience also opened at Trump Marina for Al Green, performed with The Gap Band and Morris Day and The Times at The Indianapolis Black Expo for 80,000 people, opened for Stevie Wonder at Lincoln Center in NYC, and completed a one month run headlining at Resorts International in Atlantic City, the first Gospel group to ever headline in Atlantic City. Best known for creating original musicals, his work has been seen on Broadway, throughout the United States, and across four continents internationally. Gabriel directed the Broadway production of Amazing Grace, which also toured the country and was a sit-down production at the new Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC in 2019. In New York City, he is known for his off-Broadway work: he directed the original production of Andrew Lippa's, The Wild Party at the Manhattan Theatre Club starring Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs, Brian Darcy James and Julia Murney. He was awarded the Calloway Award for Best Direction, and was nominated for five Outer Critics Circle Awards and thirteen Drama Desk Awards, both including Best Direction of a Musical. He directed the original production of John Cariani's Almost, Maine at the Daryl Roth Theatre, which has become one of the most frequently produced plays in the United States with over 4000 productions to date. It has been translated into a dozen languages and recently unseated Shakespeare as the most produced play in North American high schools. Other Off-Broadway productions include a new adaptation of Cyrano De Bergerac at the St. Clement's Theatre, using the Anthony Burgess translation, brought to life by a cast of only eight actors and featuring direction by Barre (who also appeared in the leading role), action direction by Rick Sordelet and an original musical score by Alexander Sovronsky, performed live, by the actor/musician cast.  He also directed the original productions of Summer of '42 at the Variety Arts Theatre, Honky Tonk Highway at Don't Tell Mama (winner of a MAC Award and Bistro Award for Best Review), Stars in Your Eyes at the Cherry Lane Theatre, Andrew Lippa's, john & jen at the Lamb's Theatre and Son Of A Gun at the Samuel Beckett Theater. Tricia Paoluccio is a multi talented actor, unique visual artist, and creator. Growing up on an almond farm in Modesto, CA, with an inventor as a father and school teacher mother, Tricia moved to NYC and sold her art on the street before she could make a living as an actor. Since making her Broadway debut in Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge, she has worked consistently in NY theatre on Broadway and off, in television and film. As a visual artist, Tricia has been commissioned to create botanical designs for luminaries in the fashion, publishing, and music industries. As a creator she has created and produced an optioned web-series, and, during the pandemic, cowrote a show in which she will star, premiering this Fall of 2022, where she gets to play her lifelong idol: Dolly Parton. This show, entitled Here You Come Again, was approved by Dolly, who has given Tricia permission to play her and given the creative team the world wide grand rights to all of her music. She divides her time between her California farm and NYC, where she lives with her two sons and husband, director Gabriel Barre. She is passionate about prison reform, having spent a dozen years serving as a volunteer chaplain at Manhattan Detention Center. Bruce Vilanch is an American comedy writer, songwriter and actor. He is a two-time Emmy Award-winner. Vilanch is best known to the public for his four-year stint on Hollywood Squares, as a celebrity participant; behind the scenes he was head writer for the show. In the heart of the ‘Swinging Sixties', a British rock band called Savoy Brown was born and almost immediately began to make a profound impact with their pioneering blues-rock sound. Energetic Blues has always been Savoy Brown's calling card.   In fact, Blues Rock became the catch-all phrase in the late 1960s to describe the band's music along with that of contemporaries including Cream, Fleetwood Mac, and Jimi Hendrix.   Even though the band was plagued with a constantly changing line-up, the group's guiding hand from the outset in 1966 was held by its founder, the late Kim Simmonds.  Unfortunately, Savoy Brown never reached the same level of commercial success as their contemporaries but despite this, they were a huge influence on the blues-rock genre, which led to their long-standing legacy in the industry.  The band's discography is a testament to their enduring influence. Albums like "Shake Down," "Blue Matter," and "Street Corner Talking" showcased the band's exceptional song writing and instrumentals. Through the 60s, 70s and 80's songs such as “I'm Tired”, “Train to Nowhere”, “Tell Mama” and “Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone” became Hot 100 entries.  Savoy Brown has always toured relentlessly, making it one of the longest running blues rock bands in existence. They also provided other groups opportunity. Kiss opened the bill on a Savoy Brown national tour as did ZZ Top, The Doobie Brothers and many, many more acts. Former members, having cut their teeth under Simmonds' leadership, have gone on to complete their careers with other bands. Among others, these include singer Dave Walker with Fleetwood Mac and Black Sabbath, Bill Bruford with King Crimson and Andy Pyle with the Kinks. Savoy Brown helped spawn the 1968 UK Blues Rock boom and later opened the eyes of many 1970s American teenagers to their own home territory blues artists. Today, more than 50 years later, Savoy Brown remains a formidable, progressive Blues Rock force.  As the band continues today without its leader, Kim Simmonds, who passed away late last year, it is led by my special guests – bassist PAT DESALVO and drummer GARNET GRIMM. Both have been in the line-up for more than 10 years.  I hope you enjoy the amazing story that is SAVOY BROWN's musical journey. Cabarets have been an integral part of New York City's cultural fabric for over a century, offering a unique blend of entertainment, social commentary, and artistic expression. From the early 1900s to the present day, cabarets have served as a hub for artistic experimentation and innovation. They have also served as a launching pad for many Broadway stars, including Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, Audra McDonald, and others who got their start honing skills and building a loyal fan base before transitioning to the Broadway stage. The intimacy and informality of cabaret performances have allowed performers to develop their craft and connect with audiences in a way that is impossible in larger, more formal venues. And here in New York there's been one man in particular helping artists find their voice onstage.  Sidney Myer has been a cabaret booking manager for four decades at venues like Don't Tell Mama, Rose's Turn, and Panache. He's also a performer himself, having won MAC and Bistro Awards (MAC stands for Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs). As Sidney can attest to, cabarets offer performers a chance to showcase their vocal talents and connect with audiences on a personal level. They have given voice to marginalized communities, including African Americans, LGBTQ+ individuals, and immigrants. Through this cabarets have played a significant role in shaping New York's cultural identity as well as giving a home to many artists like Sidney. STORY #1 - The struggles he faced at an all male prep school, especially when he happened to say he liked Judy Garland instead of the TV show Bonanza. STORY #2 - The random set of events that led up to his first acting experience in summer stock theater. STORY #3 - A very special act that he recruited to open up a new nightclub. "You know, Zyan, something Aunt Sarah said to Charlie today reminded me of Jesus.""What was that?" asked Zyan."Well, Charlie needed his mom, so he cried out for her. Aunt Sarah came right over and was with him through his tears. Do you remember what Aunt Sarah said when she picked Charlie up?""Yeah," said Zyan. "She said, 'Tell Mama about it.'""Exactly," said Mom. "And Jesus does something similar with us. He promises to be with us--even in our most tearful moments. He tells us to tell Him how we're feeling and what we need. He is the One who will meet our needs, and His presence is what we need most.""So Jesus is with me even when I don't remember He's there?" asked Zyan."Absolutely!" said Mom. "Just like Aunt Sarah was there for Charlie and comforted him by holding him close, Jesus is always with us. No emotion we experience is too big for Him. In fact, in the Bible we find all kinds of people who loved God and talked with Him about their deepest hurts, questions, and feelings. I'm really glad that God shows us in His Word that we can find comfort with Him, even in our hardest moments.""Me too," said Zyan."And there's more good news to remember," Mom said. "Because Jesus died on the cross and rose from the grave, He promises He will one day make all things free from sin and free from tears! As Christians, we can know that He is with us now and forever, no matter what we face." -Kandi ZellerHow About You?Did you know that you can talk with Jesus, no matter what's going on in your life or how big your feelings are? God loves His children, so we can talk with Him about anything we're facing. As Christians, we can know that God is always with us and cares about what we're going through. Talk with Jesus about what you're feeling today!Today's Key Verse:[Cast] all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. (NKJV) (1 Peter 5:7)Today's Key Thought:Share your feelings with Jesus
