Your Leadership Potential: The Truth About Charisma and Influence

In this episode, we tackle a critical leadership gap — the missing interpersonal skills no one teaches but everyone needs. We explore why great leadership isn't reserved for titles or positions — it's something every person deserves at home, work, and in the community. Our conversation dives into Richard Reid's book, Charisma Unlocked, which breaks the myth that charisma is something you're born with. Instead, charisma is a learnable skill built on four key pillars: Presence — the ability to be fully engaged in the moment Power — projecting confidence without dominance Warmth — connecting with genuine care Competence — earning trust through your skills We unpack how these pillars amplify your impact in leadership, business, negotiations, and personal relationships. As Reid shares, charisma isn't just an advantage — it's a leadership “force multiplier” that helps you connect, influence, and inspire authentically. You'll hear practical steps on mastering first impressions, nonverbal communication, and building emotional connections that people won't forget — echoing Maya Angelou's wisdom that people remember how you made them feel. Whether you're leading a team, making your next pitch, or stepping into a tough conversation, this episode gives you actionable insights from Charisma Unlocked to help you unlock your influence and grow your authentic leadership style. Rav Hirsch, Horeb, Mitzvah 78 – Rabbinic Authority As we explore in this episode, Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch understood ancient legal authority not as personal influence, but as the outgrowth of a divinely mandated structure  a system rooted in Sinai that gives form to our mission in life. Drawing on his analysis, we reflect on the nature of our own rabbinic influences. I examine its relevance to the idea of a personal rabbi not merely someone wise or kind, but someone embedded in a structure, someone who submits to a higher halachic authority. As Rav Hirsch points out, the Sanhedrin held legitimate power only when seated in the Chamber of Hewn Stone, and the Kohen could serve only while wearing his sacred garments. True Torah leadership is not about charisma, but continuity. Without submission to something beyond the self, we risk mistaking personality for Torah.

Go to www.InsightGlobal.com/LearningLeader Anthony Scaramucci served as the White House Director of Communications for President Donald Trump from July 21 to July 31, 2017. He was at Harvard Law School with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. He's the founder and managing partner of SkyBridge Capital. And he's the founder and Chairman of the SALT conference.  Leadership through service: True leadership isn't about personal glory but about making others better and helping them succeed in their roles. Derek Jeter exemplified this by never caring about personal statistics, only team success. "If you're on the team, it's not about me, right? It's about you. How am I gonna make you better? Or how am I gonna make you feel good about your role? How am I gonna get you to think that I'm here to help you?" Flexibility and decision-making under pressure: Football taught Scaramucci the importance of reading situations quickly and making audibles at the line of scrimmage - skills that translate directly to business and life leadership. "You can't just say, okay, here's the game plan, right? Because that's what Mike Tyson says, right? You have the plan until you get punched in the face, or all battle plans go by the wayside with contact with the enemy." Resilience through adversity: Getting "your ass kicked" early in life builds the resilience needed for future challenges in business and politics. Early defeats teach you how to bounce back from failure. "That's called resilience, right? You gotta get over that... That's how you gotta get your ass kicked. Here I was... and I just remember feeling so puny... So how you gotta get over that." The confidence battle starts within: The first fight in life is with yourself - believing you're good enough and worthy to compete. Henry Ford's principle applies: "If you think you can or you can't, you are right." "The first fight is with yourself. Am I good enough? Am I worthy? Can I get to the game? Can I believe in myself enough so that I'm standing next to someone else who believes in themselves that I compete?" Accountability in relationships: When Scaramucci's marriage was in crisis, taking full accountability for his mistakes rather than deflecting blame was crucial to rebuilding the relationship. "I owe my wife Deirdre, a debt of gratitude for actually really loving me because I was off the rails on a few things... she's like, Hey, I'm not having this, so if you love me, get your shit together." Life coaching vs. therapy approach: Life coaching focuses on progression and future action ("What are we doing today to be better?") rather than regression into past issues. "I feel that therapy is a regression. Life coaching is a progression... forget about the past. What the hell are you gonna do? What are we doing today to make yourself a better person?" Forgiveness as liberation: Choosing to forgive both others and yourself removes the "millstone of regret" that weighs you down and prevents forward progress. "I can take that millstone of regret and leave it behind me, take it off of my neck and leave it behind me... human frailty and not judging it is not just you judging others, but also yourself." The comfortable outsider advantage: Being comfortable with your outsider status while still being able to operate in elite circles provides authentic confidence and relatability across all social levels. "I am a comfortable outsider. I'm not an insider... but I'm comfortable with it. You know, like guys like Trump or Rudy, they're uncomfortable. Outsiders... But I'm a comfortable outsider. I don't need to do that." Intellectual curiosity + neuroplasticity: Combining genuine curiosity about others with the ability to adapt and change allows you to move successfully between different social and professional circles. "Find your superpower... I think your superpower is very similar to my superpower... intellectual curiosity. And so if you can blend intellectual curiosity with neuroplasticity, meaning you can adopt and change... then you can move in various circles." Pivot for survival: Successful businesses and careers require constant reinvention. SkyBridge's conference business and pivot to Bitcoin were survival strategies that became major successes. "We were going outta business... This was an accidental survivor strategy. This was a pivot that we were making in order to stay in business. This was not some mastermind plan."

In this episode, we explore the idea that leadership isn't about a title—it's about how you show up, the influence you have, and the impact you leave behind. Richard and I break down the difference between charisma and charm. Charm might win a room for a moment, but charisma leaves a lasting impression—it's about creating real, authentic connections that make people feel seen, heard, and better about themselves. Charisma isn't about spotlighting yourself. It's about understanding others—their emotions, their motivations—and helping them see their own potential. That's the kind of leadership people remember. We also talk about how the speed of life and our dependence on technology can dull our human edge. Remote work, packed calendars, and back-to-back Zooms leave little room for reflection or meaningful connection. Richard points out that when every interaction feels transactional, we lose the emotional depth that real leadership requires. The antidote? Be intentional. Create small pauses. Give yourself even a minute between meetings to reset, refocus, and reconnect—not just with others, but with yourself. Charisma isn't just something you're born with—it's something you can build. Richard shares practical steps: Start by setting an intention before every interaction. Ask yourself, What kind of energy do I want to bring into this room? Tune into your emotional state. If you're stressed or scattered, slow your breathing. Ground yourself. Pay attention to how you show up—not just what you say, but how you make people feel. Leadership lives in those quiet transitions—between meetings, before calls, in the spaces where you choose how to respond. We also dig into authenticity and that quiet voice of doubt so many of us wrestle with—imposter syndrome. Richard shares a simple but powerful idea: run small experiments. Share a little more of who you are in low-risk spaces. Let people see the human behind the role. You'll be surprised by how it builds connection—and confidence. We talk about how authenticity isn't weakness. It's your strength. Especially for women in leadership who often navigate the tension between being assertive and being seen as “too much” or “not enough,” authenticity can be a powerful anchor. Practice vulnerability in safe circles. Then bring it into the bigger arenas where it matters most. Leadership also means taking the time to reflect. Richard encourages building a daily rhythm of looking back—not just on what you did, but how it made you feel. What energized you? What drained you? These patterns reveal your values. And once you know what drives you, you can lead with more clarity and purpose. We close the conversation by talking about psychological safety. It's more than a buzzword—it's the foundation for real leadership. If people don't feel safe to speak up, you'll never get their best thinking. As a leader, your job is to create space where people feel they can take risks, share honestly, and show up as themselves. If leadership is about impact, then charisma, authenticity, and reflection are the tools that help you leave a mark that lasts. This episode is about learning how to lead not just with your head, but with your heart.   Connect With Richard:  website: www.richard-reid.com email: richard@pinnaclewellbeingservice.com   Connect with Tim: Website: timstatingtheobvious.com Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/timstatingtheobvious Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHfDcITKUdniO8R3RP0lvdw  Instagram: @TimStating Tiktok: @timstatingtheobvious   #LeadershipDevelopment #Charisma #EmotionalIntelligence #AuthenticLeadership #PsychologicalSafety #CommunicationSkills #RichardBranson #OprahWinfrey #BusinessCoaching #LeadershipPodcast

How to Create Psychological Safety in Your Team From Ego to Empathy: Reframing Executive Presence Episode 264 (Richard is based in South Africa) In this conversation with Richard Reid we explore: the true meaning of charisma and why it's more about how others feel than how you appear the role of psychological safety in building trust, influence, and innovation why self-awareness is the foundation of authentic leadership how emotional leakage can sabotage your message and your team culture strategies to reset your internal state between meetings for greater presence how leaders can communicate calm during crises through deliberate body language and speech the power of micro-habits to improve energy, confidence, and communication how reflection and journaling enhance resilience and leadership effectiveness practical routines to prevent burnout and show up as your best self how leaders can foster a growth mindset and create space for others to shine ----- About our guest, Richard Reid: Richard is the author of "Charisma Unlocked: The Science and Strategy to Captivate, Influence and Succeed in Business". Learn more about his Masterclasses and coaching at https://richard-reid.com/live-events/charisma-workshops/ ----- Key lessons from this conversation: Charisma is about how others feel, not how impressive you appear. Psychological safety is central to charisma and effective leadership. Charisma starts with self-awareness and managing your internal world. Reflective routines enhance emotional regulation and presence. Effective communication means seeing others as individuals, not objects. In a crisis, calm leadership is conveyed through body language and vocal control. Leaders need to be intentional with their energy and meeting schedules. Small micro-habits, like breathing or posture resets, have a big impact. True charisma is sustainable and rooted in authenticity, not performance. Teams thrive when members feel safe to express themselves and fail forward. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by honing your communication skills. Here at MinistryWatch, we have become all too familiar with the allure and the dangers of celebrity preachers. One of the things you will here me say often is that we humans are not meant to be celebrities. We're not wired for it. Celebrityhood is a condition that wars against the health of our soul. And yet…we Americans, and American evangelicals in particular, have an addiction to celebrities. To use the words from the Joni Mitchell song, our star-making machinery keeps spitting them out. And when these celebrities burn out, or meltdown, we brush them aside and make more. Jim Bakker, Ted Haggard, Ravi Zacharias, Mark Driscoll, Jimmy Swaggart, Bill Hybels. How much time do you have, because this list could go on and on. All of this is why Molly Worthen's new book caught my attention. It's called Spellbound: How Charisma Shaped American History from the Puritans to Donald Trump. Molly is one of those rare academics – she's a professor at the University of North Carolina – who writes in readable, compelling ways. And her discussion of what she calls charisma, which she says differs from celebrity or charm, is fascinating and has opened up my eyes to new ways of seeing some of the characteristics of the modern evangelical church. If Molly Worthen's name sounds familiar to you, it could be because I've cited her often in my own work. Her book Apostles of Reason: The Crisis of Authority in American Evangelicalism, was helpful to me when it was published ten years ago. I should also add that since the publication of that first book, Molly Worthen herself has had a conversion experience and now counts herself as a born-again Christian. I ask her about that near the end of this conversation, and I would invite you to stick around to the end to hear her interesting and – to my way of thinking – encouraging personal story. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Until next time, may God bless you.

For today's episode in the history of bad ideas David talks to cultural historian Tom Wright about charisma, a term that often feels essential for understanding modern politics but which ends up obscuring far more than it explains. How did an old idea from Christian theology get used to explain the hold that political leaders have over crowds? Why is it so important not to confuse charm with charisma? What has made a word from early twentieth-century social science ubiquitous on twenty-first-century dating sites? And if Trump hasn't got charisma, then what has he got? Send us a textWelcomeThanks for pressing play! In today's journey through Judges we meet Samson—the gifted judge who could tear lions to shreds, yet couldn't rein in his own appetite. His life is a walking paradox: Spirit-empowered, vow-bound … and willfully compromised.  The big question we're chasing: How can a holy God work through people who are anything but holy? If you've ever felt the tension between your calling and your failures, Samson's story is your mirror—and your hope.Episode Notes1. Three Snapshot Scenes1. **The Woman (vv. 1-4)**     “She is right in my eyes.” – Samson     • Impulse over covenant     • Echo of the book's theme: *“Everyone did what was right in his own eyes”* (Judg 21:25).2. **The Lion (vv. 5-9)**     • Spirit-given strength vs. self-given silence     • Touches a carcass twice, quietly breaking his Nazirite vow.3. **The Riddle (vv. 10-12)**     • A seven-day drinking feast among Philistines     • “Out of the eater came something to eat…”—turning sin's secrecy into gambling capital.2. Big Truths to Chew On| Truth | Why It Matters || God's sovereignty bends even sinful choices into redemptive purposes (v. 4). | Your failures don't write the final chapter. || Charisma without character caves in. | Spiritual gifting ≠ spiritual maturity. || “Right in my eyes” is the default of a leaderless heart. | We all need a better King than ourselves. |3. Reflection Questions1. Where do you rely on gifting while neglecting character?  2. Which appetites currently drive your “sight-based” decisions?  3. How have you seen God redeem a bad choice you made?  4. In what area do you need to swap *“right in my eyes”* for *“right in God's eyes”* this week?### 4. Practice This Week• 30-Minute Audit:** List recent decisions. Mark each *S* (sight) or *F* (faith). Pray over the *S's.*  • Honey Fast:** Skip your go-to comfort snack/beverage for three days. Each craving = a cue to pray, “Lord, master my appetites.”  • Accountability Text:** Ask a trusted friend, “What blind-spot do you see in me that I justify as ‘right in my eyes'?”6. Send us a textJames Rojas Taylor explains how acting techniques and tools can provide all of us with mental and emotional literacy, giving us skills to navigate life more effectively in any situation. He argues that these powerful methods have been overlooked outside the acting profession despite their life-changing potential to help us understand ourselves better.• The Stanislavski System features seven questions that help ground us in the moment: who am I, where am I, when is it, what do I want, why do I want it, how do I get it, what do I need to overcome• Our educational system programs us to think and act the same way rather than teaching us how to be authentic individuals• Acting tools can help create "multiple versions of yourself" that allow you to adapt to different situations with different authentic responses• Children should be taught emotional literacy before adolescence to better navigate that challenging period• The "It factor" consists of five learnable skills: active listening, charm, intensity, generosity, and poise• Politics often functions as a distraction from class struggles, keeping people fighting among themselves rather than addressing systemic issues• Taylor's book "All Your Best Selves" offers practical exercises for developing mental and emotional literacyCheck out James Rojas Taylor's book "All Your Best Selves" on Amazon, available in both digital and paperback formats.Follow James Rojas Taylor atWebsitehttps://www.tbcenterprises.com/YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/@SOICANDIEInstagramhttps://www.instagram.com/soicandie/TikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@soicandie1?lang=enSupport the showFollow your host atYouTube and Rumble for video contenthttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUxk1oJBVw-IAZTqChH70aghttps://rumble.com/c/c-4236474Facebook to receive updateshttps://www.facebook.com/EliasEllusion/Twitter (yes, I refuse to call it X)https://x.com/politicallyht LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/eliasmarty/

BIO: Mike Koenigs is a serial entrepreneur with five successful exits, a 19-time bestselling author, and a top strategist for founders post-exit.STORY: Mike invested big in a SaaS startup set up for success, but infighting brought it to its knees.LEARNING: Character is bigger than charisma. “If you're a shareholder, your best exit is for a big company to come and buy what they believe is money at a discount.”Mike Koenigs Guest profileMike Koenigs is a serial entrepreneur with five successful exits, a 19-time bestselling author, and a top strategist for founders post-exit. He helps build powerful personal brands in just one week and pioneers Generative AI for executives, speaking at elite events like Abundance 360, MIT, and Tony Robbins' gatherings.Worst investment everMike learned about a SaaS startup from a client with whom he had spent time and had gotten to know, like, and trust him. So, when the client introduced Mike to this deal, he got interested. The startup looked great, so he invested a substantial amount of money and then doubled down because it got even better.Off to a promising startThe basic premise was that it was a pool. The founders would find SaaS companies with customers, momentum, technology, and a bit of a moat. They had much experience and success, such as a 10x dividend to investors in three years.Infighting paralyzes everythingUnfortunately, the two founders started fighting. One of them locked the other one out of everything. They had the majority and equal shareholding, making infighting even worse. The remaining partner started emptying the coffers.Someone doing the books became a whistleblower and revealed the shenanigans going on. The partner was siphoning off money, building a house, going on big trips, using private jets everywhere, etc. It got uglier and uglier, causing the shareholders to file lawsuits, and the FTC got involved. Years have gone by, and things are still shut down.Lessons learnedTime kills deals.Character is bigger than charisma. Crooked founders will gut you faster than any market downturn.Put all that money into index funds and let it compound.Andrew's takeawaysThe only way to invest as an angel investor is to invest in 10 startups. Don't do it if you are not prepared with the money and time to do that.Actionable adviceUnless you're a full-time VC with deal flow, customer channels, or an exit mapped out, keep your money in things you can control. If you're a shareholder, your best exit is for a big company to come and buy what they believe is money at a discount.Mike's recommendationsMike recommends learning to build a brand that will elevate everything you touch for the rest of your life. He suggests reading his book, Your Next Act: The Six Growth Accelerators for Creating a Business You'll Love for the Rest of Your Life, to help you build your brand. He also recommends immersing yourself in AI and learning how to use it effectively.No.1 goal for the next 12 monthsMike's number one goal for the next 12 months is to become an international citizen. He wants to continue living his beautiful life in multiple locations and working with more entrepreneurs worldwide.Parting words “Go out and build your brand. You will get access to better deals faster at a discounted price.”
