“We are now competing in conversation with someone's feed.”Connecting with others requires more than knowing what to say. The signals we send through our body language, the questions we ask, and even where we position ourselves can shape how others experience a conversation. In this Quick Thinks episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, behavioral researcher and author of Cues and Captivate, Vanessa Van Edwards joins Matt Abrahams to explore the subtle cues that make communication more engaging. She shares strategies for navigating networking events, sparking more meaningful conversations, and signaling the warmth and competence that shape charisma and connection.Takeaways:Connection starts before you speak. Visible palms, eye contact, positioning, and other nonverbal cues can signal warmth and openness, shaping how others experience an interaction from the start.Better conversations spark curiosity. Moving beyond routine small talk with engaging questions, surprising stories, and genuine enthusiasm can make interactions more memorable and meaningful.Activity:Create a conversational feed. Start a note on your phone and collect three things from your week—a surprising moment, an interesting observation, or a small win. Bring one into your next networking event or meeting as “conversational confetti” instead of defaulting to routine small talk.Printable Expanded Takeaways & ActivitiesEpisode Reference Links:Vanessa Van EdwardsVanessa's Books: Cues / CaptivateEp.301 Trust at First Sight: Create More Meaningful Connections Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedIn Chapters:(00:00) - Introduction (00:37) - Why Your Hands Matter (02:20) - Networking With Confidence (05:34) - Make Small Talk More Engaging (09:03) - The Science of Charisma (13:11) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors. Olivia Fox Cabane (The Charisma Myth, The Net and the Butterfly) is a bestselling author, speaker, and leading authority on the science of charisma. Olivia joins Armchair Expert to discuss growing up in Paris without television or movies, receiving an autism diagnosis in her 40s, and decoding the “secret manual” of human interaction. Olivia and Dax talk about translating charisma research into a teachable system, showing founders why body language can outweigh a flawless pitch, and updating her book with cutting-edge research on digital charisma. Olivia explains why focused listening gives introverts an advantage, why genuine warmth cannot be faked, and how too much charisma can leave powerful people dangerously unaccountable.Check Allstate first for a quote that could save you hundreds: https://www.allstate.com/Take printer ink off your back to school list with HP Smart Tank | https://hp.com/SmartTank See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Send us Fan MailOlivia Fox Cabane, author of the international bestseller The Charisma Myth, joins Joe to explore the science and practice of charisma—what it really is, why the biggest myths about it persist, and how anyone can deliberately develop it.This episode dismantles the idea that charisma is an innate, magical quality reserved for a lucky few. Olivia shows that charisma is a set of learned behaviors built on three core elements—presence, power, and warmth—that can be dialed up or down depending on personality, situation, and goals. She explains how these elements work together (much like sugar, fat, and salt) to create the powerful effect we label “charisma,” and why first impressions form in under two seconds largely through body language rather than status symbols or titles.Olivia also unpacks the internal work required: managing the inner critic, dismantling imposter syndrome, using visualization and gratitude to shift mindset, and practicing self-compassion so confidence (and therefore power) can show up externally. She shares practical tools for presence (from a two-second toe focus to short meditation), warmth, and power, while warning about the real downsides of leaving the “charisma switch” on too long—people oversharing, leaders persuading others of flawed ideas, and the emotional cost of constant high output.Joe and Olivia also discuss:Why presence, power, and warmth must all reach a minimum threshold, yet different “flavors” of charisma (authority, kindness, visionary, etc.) emerge from which element is strongest How body language consistently outweighs titles, cars, or clothing in conveying power Why distraction (especially phones) instantly kills charisma and how even a 17-millisecond delay in facial response registers as inauthentic The role of self-criticism as the biggest inhibitor of power—and why self-compassion and instant self-forgiveness are essential tools Practical ways to combat imposter syndrome: destigmatize it, detach from the feeling, and reframe it as useful fuel Visualization techniques (and gratitude practices) for generating genuine warmth before walking into a room How to accept compliments so the other person feels good for giving them Emotional contagion in leadership and why a leader's calm under stress can steady an entire team The surprising science of voice, online charisma (bandwidth, camera angle, gesturing even when unseen), and why lower pitch is not inherently more charismatic The darker sides of high charisma: over-persuasion of bad ideas, people getting “hooked,” and the need to sometimes dial it down Why self-regulation is the single most important underlying skillThis episode is for anyone who wants to become more influential, present, and effective—whether in leadership, sales, interviews, or everyday interactions—without relying on status or personality luck. It is also for those who already feel charismatic and want to use the skill more deliberately and responsibly, for founders and managers seeking healthier team dynamics, and for anyone ready to treat charisma as a trainable set of behaviors rather than a fixed trait.A special thanks to this week's sponsors!Veteran-founded Adyton. They trace his working-class upbringing in Armthorpe near Doncaster, his family's mining and Labour roots, and formative influences like Sister Mary Oliver, who encouraged his football. The episode follows Keegan's unlikely early path—rejected by Doncaster and Coventry, starting at Scunthorpe—through his move to Liverpool under Bill Shankly, where his fitness, motivation, and partnership with John Toshack helped drive major success, alongside growing fame via endorsements and Superstars. Olivia Fox Cabane: The Charisma Myth Olivia Fox Cabane is one of the world's leading authorities on the science of charisma and the bestselling author of The Charisma Myth, which has been translated into 27 languages. Previously Director of Innovative Leadership for Stanford StartX, Olivia has lectured on charisma, leadership, and innovation at Harvard, Yale, MIT, the Marine War College and the United Nations. She has been featured in The New York Times, The Economist, and The Wall Street Journal and has recently released the revised version of The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism (Amazon, Bookshop)*. Charisma. We all notice leaders who've got it. Many of us wish we had more of it. Good news though – like so many leadership skills we talk about on this podcast, you can get better at it. In this conversation, Olivia and I explore how almost anyone can improve their charisma. Key Points Charisma is a skill that you can learn and practice. While some people have natural strengths for charisma more so than others, people are not simply born charismatic. Many just start young. You don't have to be naturally outgoing. You can be a very charismatic introvert. Presence + Power + Warmth = Charisma Power is the “Can you move mountains for me?” question. Warmth is the “Would you want to move them for me?” question. Presence is the “Are you aware of which mountains I need moved?” question. A small amount of improvement can make a big difference on how you are perceived. Three quick tips to improve your charisma: Lower the intonation of your voice at the end of your sentences. Reduce how quickly and how often you nod. Pause for two full seconds before you speak. Jeff Mains sits down with Logan Yonavjak, a nearly two-decade veteran of impact investing and venture capital, who built the Founder Readiness Institute after watching a promising founding team unravel post-investment. Logan explains why "people risk" — not market or product risk — is the leading cause of startup failure, and how her Founder Readiness Level assessment uses AI-driven quantitative linguistics (rooted in adult developmental psychology) to measure a founder's capacity for complexity, resilience, and coachability. The conversation covers her pivot from selling to VCs to selling to mid-market companies (200–2,000 employees), why she favors partnerships over "owning the whole stack," what building the tool taught her about her own leadership blind spots, and where people analytics is headed as AI reshapes what's left for humans to do.Key Takeaways4:46 — The deal that started it all: a founder who "buckled" after investment closed, and the lesson about charisma bias.7:16 — Why investors spend more time on the pitch deck than on the person who has to execute it.9:18 — The data: ~65% of startup failures trace back to people problems (Noam Wasserman / Harvard Business Review, 10,000 founders studied).10:18 — How the Founder Readiness Level differs from personality tests: it measures developmental stage, not static self-reported traits.13:27 — Why AI made scoring open-ended, scenario-based responses possible at scale (versus hand-coded transcripts).17:30 — What "managing complexity" actually looks like in high-level leaders: holding multiple interdisciplinary frameworks at once.19:15 — The go-to-market mistake: mistaking "this is interesting" for a real, fundable pain point among VCs.21:50 — Repositioning the ICP: C-suite and L&D leaders at Series B/C+ startups in high-innovation industries.29:02 — The Steve Jobs thought experiment: high strategic complexity, likely lower relational intelligence early on.35:04 — Build vs. partner: why "ecosystem builder" is a higher-complexity strategic move than trying to dominate a category.38:32 — The question every founder should be asking themselves: "How coachable am I?"39:17 — Where to find Logan and the assessment (readinessengine.io, LinkedIn).Tweetable Quotes"Charisma is a remarkable camouflage. A great storyteller can make a structurally fragile leadership team look like a dynasty, right up until the growth pressure hits.""We bet on the horse, not the jockey... we say we're betting on the jockey, but we don't give them any tools.""It's not about being better or worse, it's just that it depends on where you would be best situated professionally.""AI has taken the bottom out of [junior-level work]. So what's left for humans to do is actually more complex tasks.""It's a higher level strategic complexity move to be more of an ecosystem builder than someone trying to dominate a market.""How coachable am I? ... that growth mindset to success — everyone should be asking themselves that on a regular basis.""Sixty-five percent of startups don't die because the product was bad. They die because the founder couldn't see themselves clearly when things got hard." — Jeff MainsSaaS Leadership LessonsPeople risk beats market risk. Roughly two-thirds of startup failures trace back to human/leadership breakdowns, not product or timing.Charisma is not a leadership metric. The most compelling storytellers in the room are often the hardest to accurately evaluate.Self-reported assessments have a ceiling. Static, forced-choice tests can be gamed and don't track development over time — open-ended, scenario-based signals are harder to fake.Position around infrastructure, not features. Framing the product as "developmental intelligence infrastructure" rather than another HR tech point-solution avoided category fatigue.Partner before you build or acquire. Complementary players (e.g., behavioral analytics firms) can expand value to shared clients faster than trying to own the entire stack.Coachability and flexible identity predict survival. The founders who pivot fastest under negative market feedback are the ones who don't over-identify with a single idea.Guest Resourceswww.founderready.iohttps://www.facebook.com/loganyonhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/loganyonavjak/https://www.instagram.com/loganyon/https://x.com/LoganyonEpisode SponsorThe Futureproof Series - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfkXKUPZ5xuOqMPR7_gzGybncTtavyR1NThe Captain's KeysSmall Fish, Big Pond – https://smallfishbigpond.com/ Use the promo code ‘SaaSFuel'Champion Leadership Group – https://championleadership.com/https://jeffmains.com/books/SaaS Fuel ResourcesWebsite - https://championleadership.com/Jeff Mains on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffkmains/Twitter - https://twitter.com/jeffkmainsFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/thesaasguy/Instagram - https://instagram.com/jeffkmains
Olivia Fox Cabane is the best-selling author of The Charisma Myth and a former director of innovative leadership at Stanford. She has coached leaders at companies including Apple, Google, JPMorgan, and Airbnb, and has spent years studying the science behind charisma. In this episode, Olivia explains why charisma isn't an innate personality trait but a learnable skill, how presence, power, and warmth work together, and why mastering charisma may become even more valuable as AI makes knowledge and information increasingly accessible. On this episode we talk about: Why charisma is a learned behavior rather than an innate personality trait The three core components of charisma: presence, power, and warmth How to practice charisma in low-stakes situations and make presence a daily habit The potential downsides of charisma, including manipulation, envy, and convincing people when you're actually wrong How vocal fluctuation, online communication, and AI are changing the way charisma is perceived Top 3 Takeaways Charisma can be learned. Like any other skill, charisma may feel unnatural at first, but consistent practice can make it feel effortless over time. Start with presence. In a distracted world, simply giving someone your full attention can dramatically increase your impact. Olivia recommends practicing in everyday, low-stakes interactions. Use charisma with the right intent. Charisma can be incredibly powerful, but it can also manipulate or mislead people. The goal should be to create a better experience for everyone involved, not simply to control an interaction. Notable Quotes “Charisma is a series of learned behaviors.” “The world becomes your lab and every person you meet is a chance to experiment.” “If your intent is good and your impact is good, use everything at your disposal.” Connect with Olivia Fox Cabane: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oliviafoxcabane/ Other: The Charisma Myth Website: https://www.oliviafoxcabane.com/ A Word from Our Sponsors: - Go to Leesa.com for 25% OFF select mattresses (through August 23, 2026) PLUS get an extra $50 off with promo code TMM, exclusive for my listeners Learn more about your ad choices. In Episode 383 of The Real Jason Duncan Podcast, you either have it or you don't. That's what the world believes about charisma. And the woman who literally wrote the book on it — she believed that too. Then the science came back and killed the myth entirely. Olivia Fox Cabane is the author of The Charisma Myth, translated into 36 languages and one of the top five books Jason recommends to everyone. She has taught the science of charisma at Harvard, MIT, and the United Nations, coached the leadership of Apple, Google, and TikTok, and built her entire career on a single truth: the thing everyone calls a gift is actually a skill. She joins Jason today to expose the lie she once believed herself — that charisma is innate, magical, and either yours at birth or not yours at all. Today, Olivia sits down with Jason to dismantle one of the most comfortable lies a person can believe. Because if charisma is a birthright, your awkwardness isn't failure. It's just the verdict about how you were made. Nothing to fix. Nothing to work on. You're simply not one of those people. Except the verdict was fake. In this episode, Jason and Olivia cover: Why charisma was a taboo research subject for 50 years — and what changed in 1989 The two turning points in the science of charisma — and what the 2011 study proved that changed everything The three components of charisma — presence, power, and warmth — and why introverts can be more charismatic than extroverts in certain contexts How Steve Jobs learned charisma step by step in public — and what you can see if you watch him from 1983 to 2011 Why the most charismatic people learned it so early it looks like they were born with it The guardrails of intent and impact — and why charisma is a tool like a knife in the hands of a surgeon The real downsides of charisma that nobody talks about — and why Olivia keeps it turned off most of the time What happens to leadership, medicine, parenting, and sales when charisma is added — and why it's a force multiplier in every area of life What online charisma looks like and why it's different — audio compression, camera placement, and why gesturing matters even when it can't be seen What Olivia now knows that she wishes someone had told her 20 years ago — and why nobody did The one thing Olivia wants every person still inside this lie to hear before the episode ends The lie costs everyone who never heard their voice. Every quiet person with a better idea who stayed quiet. Every founder who handed the pitch to the natural in the room. This episode is the beginning of getting that credit back.

Pre-Order Pete Scazzero's forthcoming book, Emotionally Healthy Success at www.emotionallyhealthy.org/successFor most of my early ministry, I led from my gifts. Teaching, vision-casting, faith, I had those in abundance, and little else. So I built my leadership on them, hid my weaknesses, and made sure no one saw me struggle. Then a painful church split exposed the whole thing. I spiraled into a two-year depression before I hit rock bottom, and found Jesus waiting for me there. In this episode, I walk through the second of four reversals from my new book: the move from charisma to weakness and limits. Jesus was born to a peasant girl, lived thirty ordinary years, and refused the power offered him in the desert. Paul, facing leaders with every credential he lacked, chose to boast in his weakness instead. "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness."If you've been measuring your ministry by the world's scorecard- gifts, platform, impact- this episode will show you a better one. Weakness isn't a hindrance to what God wants to do through you. In this episode with Scot McKnight, we ask whether the perception that the Pharisees were hypocrites, legalists with a religious spirit is the right way to view them. We move the conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees from one of theological debate to one in response to charisma, the crowds, and power. We talk about what charisma actually is, why economic justice sat at the center of Jesus' movement, the seven things the Pharisees really were, and what it means to stop weaponizing the word against anyone we disagree with.Scot McKnight (PhD, Nottingham) has been a Professor of New Testament for more than four decades. He is the author of more than ninety books, including the award-winning The Jesus Creed as well as The King Jesus Gospel, A Fellowship of Differents, One.Life, The Blue Parakeet, Revelation for the Rest of Us, and Kingdom Conspiracy.Scot's Book:Jesus, People, PhariseesScot's Recommendation:Furious MindsConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@shiftingculturepodcast.comGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. We are living in an age when the antichrists no longer hide in dark corners but they stand beneath spotlights, speak from television screens, wear expensive suits, carry government credentials and even walk into the pulpit holding a King James Bible. Jesus Christ warned that the defining characteristic of the last days would not merely be war, disease or political turmoil, but deception. The modern world is drowning in information while starving for truth, and the louder the machinery of propaganda becomes, the more difficult it is for the undiscerning person to separate fact from carefully manufactured perception. But what about the Christian, the Bible believer who should be looking for these things, even anticipating these things? All is not quiet on the western front, and the skies are rapidly darkening.“Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.” 1 John 2:18 (KJB)On this episode of the Prophecy News Podcast, The COVID era demonstrated how quickly fear could be converted into power. Emergency declarations became lockdowns, dissent was suppressed, institutional narratives repeatedly changed, and millions were pressured to accept medical decisions under threat of losing employment, education or access to ordinary life. Then there is the expanding alliance between government, media, military power, surveillance technology and private capital. Figures such as Peter Thiel represent a technological world capable of collecting, organizing and analyzing information on a scale previous generations could scarcely imagine, while Pete Hegseth represents the polished fusion of television personality, political messaging and military authority. Most disturbing of all is deception inside the professing Church. Political deception can corrupt a nation, but spiritual deception can destroy souls. Charisma, preaching ability, celebrity friendships and institutional reputation must never be permitted to shield abuse, silence victims or prevent serious allegations from receiving an honest investigation. Kenny Baldwin didn't fall, Jack Schaap didn't fall, they are literal antichrists targeting the Church, with hundreds more just like them waiting in the wings. This is THE AGE OF DECEPTION – an age in which governments manipulate fear, politicians manufacture loyalty, corporations monetize personal information, media personalities sell carefully constructed narratives and religious institutions protect reputations at the expense of truth. Christian, we are surrounded by antichrists who are with one voice preparing this world to receive the Antichrist. Today we lift all the end times rocks to show you what's crawling beneath them. Consider this your ‘golden age' antidote!

Watch the video and share your thoughts in the Zion Lab community Transcript available with the video in the Zion Lab community Highlights Scott discusses the intersection of organizational behavior and church leadership. He shares insights on effective leadership qualities, the importance of creating a positive environment, and the balance between achieving goals and fostering relationships within church communities. Key Insights Outward Focus: Effective leaders prioritize the needs and well-being of others, creating a connection that fosters trust and engagement. Positive Environment: Leaders should cultivate a supportive and uplifting atmosphere, which enhances motivation and collaboration among members. Relational Leadership: Leadership is fundamentally relational; outstanding leaders are not necessarily the most technically skilled but excel in building relationships and fostering a sense of belonging. Cognitive Dynamics: The brain’s analytical and empathetic networks are antagonistic; leaders must be aware of emotional climates to encourage creativity and openness rather than stress and defensiveness. Charisma vs. Competence: Charismatic leaders can inspire hope, but relying solely on charisma can lead to overlooking effective leadership qualities that are not immediately visible. Leadership Applications Storytelling: Latter-day Saint leaders can use personal stories to illustrate the impact of ministering, helping members connect emotionally and understand the importance of their roles in the community. Cultural Focus: By emphasizing a culture of belonging and support, leaders can motivate members to engage in ministering efforts naturally, rather than through pressure or performance metrics. Awareness of Bias: Leaders should recognize their biases when selecting individuals for leadership roles, ensuring that they look beyond charisma and traditional expectations to identify those who truly embody the principles of effective leadership. Most speakers assume their audience is persuadable by good evidence. Psychologist Owen Fitzpatrick, who trained under NLP co-creator Richard Bandler and has travelled to over a hundred countries, including North Korea, Afghanistan and Iran, studying how belief actually forms, argues that's backwards. People believe what feels right, fits their identity, and keeps them inside their tribe. Evidence comes after, as justification.Owen built his reputation on charisma work (his book The Charismatic Edge argued charisma is an impression you create, not something you're born with) before moving into belief and propaganda with his new book Inner Propaganda, out 4 August. In this conversation, he lays out his DELP model (an expansion of Aristotle's ethos, logos, pathos to include demos — understanding your specific audience), explains why intelligent, critical-thinking people are often the most convincing propagandists to themselves, and draws a sharp line between persuasion, manipulation and propaganda that every speaker standing on a stage should sit with.We also get into why spontaneous, unscripted delivery reads as more truthful than polished delivery (with Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" as the example), and why AI's tendency to flatter you is quietly making this problem worse, not better. In this episode:Why charisma is built, not innate, and why it matters more now than when Owen wrote The Charismatic Edge in 2013The DELP model: demos, ethos, logos, pathosWhy perceived authenticity beats actual authenticity, and why spontaneity reads as truthWhy critical thinking doesn't protect you from bad beliefs (argumentation vs investigation)Motivated reasoning, naive realism, and sacred values: why smart people hold ridiculous beliefsThe difference between persuasion, manipulation and propaganda, and why every speaker is, to a degree, a propagandistOwen's practical tools: the belief audit, the feels right/fits in/makes sense framework, and E-Prime languageConnect with Owen on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/owenfitzp/The book and the special workshop are available at https://innerpropaganda.com, and you can discover more about Owen and his work at https://owenfitzpatrick.comFAQWhat is Owen Fitzpatrick's DELP model? The DELP model is Owen Fitzpatrick's expansion of Aristotle's rhetorical triad of ethos, logos and pathos. Owen adds demos, the requirement to understand the specific audience being addressed, alongside ethos (credibility and positioning), logos (logical structure and evidence) and pathos (emotional impact). What is Owen Fitzpatrick's book Inner Propaganda about?Inner Propaganda is Owen Fitzpatrick's book, to be released on 4th of August 2026, about how individuals generate their own propaganda internally through feelings, self-narratives and motivated reasoning. It argues that people convince themselves of beliefs the same way state propaganda convinces populations, through internal versions of state media, indoctrination and truth engineering. What is the difference between persuasion, manipulation and propaganda, according to Owen Fitzpatrick?Persuasion is the ethical attempt to change beliefs, attitudes or behaviour while genuinely caring about what the other person wants. Manipulation uses deception and serves only the persuader's own interests. Propaganda combines both, using every available tool of persuasion and manipulation to construct an entire reality for the audience. Why doesn't critical thinking protect people from believing false things?According to Owen Fitzpatrick, critical thinking and intelligence make people better at constructing airtight arguments (argumentation) rather than at genuinely investigating what is true (investigation). Motivated reasoning, a concept from psychologist Ziva Kunda, refers to people reasoning toward conclusions they already want to be true. What is naive realism?Naive realism is the belief that one's own perception of reality is objectively accurate and shared by anyone reasonable. Owen Fitzpatrick argues this prevents people from applying the same critical scrutiny to their own beliefs that they readily apply to beliefs they disagree with. What is E-Prime language and why does Owen Fitzpatrick use it?E-Prime is a form of English that eliminates the verb "to be," originally developed by David Bourland based on Alfred Korzybski's work on language and semantics. Owen Fitzpatrick uses it as a belief-flexibility tool: replacing "this is true" with "this seems true to me" builds in the possibility of revision.Visit https://strategic-speaker.scoreapp.com to take the 2-minute Strategic Speaking Business Audit and find out what's blocking you from getting more bookings, re-bookings, referrals and bigger fees. Celebration as Christopher and Natalie hit a milestone most podcasts never reach: episode 150. In this unscripted, no-notes conversation, they pull back the curtain on what it's actually taken to keep Dating Intelligence going — the burnout, the format pivots, the moments they almost quit — and why the real work was never about dating advice, it was about doing the inner work themselves first. They talk candidly about authenticity versus performance, building community that actually sticks, and how personal transformation shows up in everything from relationships to money to how you show up on camera. Then they shift gears entirely: road trip stories, DJ Nani makes an appearance, and a reminder that even people who talk about relationships for a living are still figuring it out in real time. What if greatness isn't about the rank you achieve... but the lives you leave behind? In 2004, Brigadier General (Ret.) Dr. Sheila Baxter became the first African American woman in the history of the Army Medical Service Corps to achieve the rank of Brigadier General. But that's not the story that stayed with me. The story that stayed with me was the young basketball player from Franklin, Virginia who simply loved serving people. The lieutenant whose commander challenged her to write a 20-year career plan. The officer who almost left the Army... ...and didn't. The leader who discovered that the higher you rise, the more humble you should become. And the retired general who could have spent retirement anywhere but instead chose to serve unhoused veterans, build affordable housing, and continue changing lives. In this conversation, we talk about:▪️ Why passion matters more than titles▪️ The mentors who changed the course of her life▪️ How to stay humble while leading at the highest levels▪️ What it really feels like to carry the weight of being "the first"▪️ Why she believes Army leadership prepares you for anything in life▪️ The importance of listening before making life-changing decisions▪️ The transition from commanding thousands of Soldiers to serving veterans on the streets of AtlantaOne quote I haven't stopped thinking about:"The higher you go, the more humble you should become."This isn't just an episode for Army leaders. It's for anyone trying to become a better leader, mentor, parent, teammate, or human being.I left this conversation inspired and I think you will too. Sheila R. Baxter is a native of Franklin, Virginia. She was born on 4 April 1955 to the proud parents of (late) John and Mary Baxter. She is one of five children and credits her parents for providing a loving home and family. In 1973, she graduated from Franklin High School. She completed her undergraduate education at Virginia State (now University) in 1977, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. She was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1978 after completing the Reserve Officer Training Corps, and she earned recognition as a Distinguished Military Graduate from Virginia State University. She holds a master's degree in health services management from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, and a Master of Divinity from the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia. In May 2024, Baxter completed a Doctor of Ministry degree from the ITC.Her doctoral qualitative research focused on creating access to services for women and men experiencing homelessness in Forest Park, Georgia. Baxter's military experience began in 1978 as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corps. Throughout her 30 year career, she enjoyed a variety of command and staff assignments including Chief of Staff, Medical Research and Materiel Command, Fort Detrick, Maryland; Logistics Officer for 1st Medical Group, Fort Hood, Texas; Commander, 226th Medical Logistics Battalion in Pirmasens, Germany; Commander, United States Medical Materiel Center, Europe; Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics for the Army Surgeon General and Commanding General, Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, Washington. If your porch light seems to attract every moth and flying insect in the neighborhood, you're not imagining it. Scientists have finally figured out why artificial lights are so irresistible to many insects—and knowing what they've discovered can help you keep more bugs away this summer. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-44785-3 Some people seem to light up a room the moment they walk in. Others naturally draw people in, inspire confidence, and make lasting impressions. We call it charisma, and many assume you're either born with it or you're not. Olivia Fox Cabane says that's simply not true. In this conversation, she explains what charisma really is, why it's often misunderstood, and the surprisingly practical skills anyone can learn to become more influential and engaging. Olivia has advised leaders at Google, Deloitte, UBS, MGM, and TikTok, and is author of The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism (https://amzn.to/44kpuyI). For decades, we've talked about "the midlife crisis" as though it's inevitable. But what if we've gotten midlife completely wrong? Research suggests that your middle years can be one of the most productive, satisfying, and influential periods of your life. So why does this stage have such a negative reputation? And what are people in midlife uniquely positioned to do that younger and older adults often can't? Margie Lachman, Professor of Psychology at Brandeis University and director of the Lifespan Lab, shares a fresh, evidence-based perspective on why midlife deserves a lot more celebration than sympathy. She is author of Primetime: A New Vision for Midlife (https://amzn.to/4bpLbRJ). Have you ever searched everywhere for your keys or your glasses, only to discover they were sitting in plain sight the whole time? It's a surprisingly common experience, and it reveals something fascinating about how your brain decides what you do—and don't—see. https://dictionary.apa.org/inattentional-blindness PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS WAYFAIR: Ready to upgrade your home for way less? As part of The Lo Life's Level Up Series, Lo explores the skills that can help you thrive personally and professionally—and few are more misunderstood than charisma. This week, Lo sits down with internationally renowned charisma expert and New York Times bestselling author Olivia Fox Cabane, whose groundbreaking research has helped reshape the way leaders, entrepreneurs, and everyday people think about influence, connection, and presence. Drawing on decades of work at institutions including Stanford and MIT, and coaching leaders at Google, Apple, Airbnb, TikTok, Deloitte, and UBS, Olivia has become one of the world's leading voices on the science of charisma. Her own journey—from describing herself as introverted, socially awkward and autistic to becoming a globally recognized expert on human connection—makes her perspective all the more compelling. In this conversation, Lo and Olivia unpack why charisma isn't an innate gift but a learnable skill rooted in psychology and behavioral science. They explore how charisma influences leadership, careers, relationships, interviews, and everyday interactions, while examining how the rules have evolved in an era where our digital presence can be just as important as the person we are face-to-face. They also discuss why introverts can be deeply charismatic, the historical misconceptions surrounding charisma, and how these skills can be used to build trust, inspire others, and shape the next generation. Whether you're looking to become a stronger communicator, a more confident leader, or simply a more authentic version of yourself, this episode offers practical insights into a skill that can transform every area of life.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In Episode 378 of The Real Jason Duncan Podcast, years ago you decided you're just not a people person. Not a natural up front of people. And you've been paying for that one little sentence ever since. It doesn't feel like a lie. It feels like being honest and humble about your own limits. You're not bragging when you say you're just not wired that way. It actually sounds modest, self-aware even. Which is exactly why it's so easy to live inside it for decades. But a limit you've never actually tested isn't humility. It's a guess you've been treating like a hard fact. In this solo Wednesday episode drawn from his What's Real newsletter, Jason dismantles the born-with-it myth using one of the most famous women who ever lived, a researcher who spent her career studying what people believe about their own potential, and thirteen years of bombing in front of crowds before figuring out what actually works. Charisma isn't a gift. It's a skill. And if the one trait everyone is surest is hardwired from birth turns out to be learnable — so is everything else you've written off about yourself. In this episode, Jason covers: The lie that sounds like humility — and why that's exactly what makes it so expensive Marilyn Monroe on the New York City subway in 1955 — and what happened 15 seconds later on the sidewalk The charisma course built for UC Berkeley's business school — and why you don't build a curriculum for something people are born with The three learnable behaviors that make up what everyone calls charisma Why “I'm just not” is the cheapest cage to build — and what it actually costs you Carol Dweck's research on fixed vs. growth mindset — and the one word that changes everything What Jason's 13 years as a pastor and years teaching bored teenagers actually taught him about presence The one uncomfortable thing to do this week that contradicts the sentence you've been repeating for years What Proverb 9:9 says about wisdom — and why the fool's problem was never his raw material The door was never locked. This episode will show you where the key has been sitting all along.

Evolutionary psychologist Steve Stewart-Williams joins me this episode for a wide-ranging discussion on what makes humans tick — biological sex differences, the mechanics of attraction, how relationships and personality take shape, and the contested science that tries to explain all of it. Steve teaches psychology at the University of Nottingham Malaysia and has written Darwin, God and the Meaning of Life, The Ape That Understood the Universe, and most recently A Billion Years of Sex Differences. Together we get into why his field draws so much political heat and misreading from every direction. Steve breaks down how traditionalists and progressives each manage to distort what the research actually shows, why acknowledging biology's role isn't a backdoor argument for old-fashioned gender roles, and why explaining how human nature works says nothing about how a society ought to be organized. 00:00 Intro 07:55 Are Sex Differences Biological or Cultural? 14:23 How Steve Discovered Evolutionary Psychology 17:48 Why Male and Female Mating Strategies Differ 21:18 Mate-Choice Copying and the Wedding Ring Effect 29:35 The Gender-Equality Paradox 36:11 Male and Female Personality Differences 38:15 Parenthood, Depression and Modern Life 45:06 Male Suicide, Therapy and Mental Health 50:05 Psychology's Replication Crisis 56:29 Will Sex Differences Ever Disappear? 1:01:54 The Largest Psychological Sex Differences 1:06:14 Patriarchy and Social-Media Narratives About Men 1:16:25 Prenatal Testosterone and Twin Studies 1:25:27 Sexual Orientation, Crime and Gender Differences 1:27:52 Casual Sex and Sexual Overperception 1:36:22 Rival Derogation and Mate Selection 1:41:06 Dating Apps, Hypergamy and Attraction 1:46:06 Why Humor, Charisma and Competence Are Attractive 1:52:25 Evolutionary Theories That Were Proven Wrong 1:53:49 Wokeness and Conformity in Academia 2:03:01 The Argument Against Innate Sex Differences 2:05:32 A Billion Years of Sex Differences 2:06:46 Using AI for Research and Debate Preparation 2:14:14 Final Dating Insights and Closing Thoughts ————————————————————

Most people think charisma is a mystical gift you're either born with or not. It isn't. In this episode of DarrenDaily On-Demand, Darren Hardy draws on research from Princeton's Dr. Susan Fiske to reveal that charisma comes down to two qualities working at the same time: warmth and competence. Most of us lead with one and starve the other. The competent come across as cold and suspicious; the warm trade credibility for likability. Darren breaks down how to tell which camp you're in and how to balance the scales so people both trust you and rely on you. Get more personal mentoring from Darren each day.
