Scott married Ashley Anne Boyter and they are the parents of four children and reside in Franklin, Massachusetts. Watch the video and share your thoughts in the Zion Lab community Transcript available with the video in the Zion Lab community Highlights Scott discusses the intersection of organizational behavior and church leadership. He shares insights on effective leadership qualities, the importance of creating a positive environment, and the balance between achieving goals and fostering relationships within church communities. Key Insights Outward Focus: Effective leaders prioritize the needs and well-being of others, creating a connection that fosters trust and engagement. Positive Environment: Leaders should cultivate a supportive and uplifting atmosphere, which enhances motivation and collaboration among members. Relational Leadership: Leadership is fundamentally relational; outstanding leaders are not necessarily the most technically skilled but excel in building relationships and fostering a sense of belonging. Cognitive Dynamics: The brain’s analytical and empathetic networks are antagonistic; leaders must be aware of emotional climates to encourage creativity and openness rather than stress and defensiveness. Charisma vs. Competence: Charismatic leaders can inspire hope, but relying solely on charisma can lead to overlooking effective leadership qualities that are not immediately visible. Leadership Applications Storytelling: Latter-day Saint leaders can use personal stories to illustrate the impact of ministering, helping members connect emotionally and understand the importance of their roles in the community. Cultural Focus: By emphasizing a culture of belonging and support, leaders can motivate members to engage in ministering efforts naturally, rather than through pressure or performance metrics. Awareness of Bias: Leaders should recognize their biases when selecting individuals for leadership roles, ensuring that they look beyond charisma and traditional expectations to identify those who truly embody the principles of effective leadership.

Charisma Isn't Innate, It's Built: Owen Fitzpatrick on the Psychology of Influence

Most speakers assume their audience is persuadable by good evidence. Psychologist Owen Fitzpatrick, who trained under NLP co-creator Richard Bandler and has travelled to over a hundred countries, including North Korea, Afghanistan and Iran, studying how belief actually forms, argues that's backwards. People believe what feels right, fits their identity, and keeps them inside their tribe. Evidence comes after, as justification.Owen built his reputation on charisma work (his book The Charismatic Edge argued charisma is an impression you create, not something you're born with) before moving into belief and propaganda with his new book Inner Propaganda, out 4 August. In this conversation, he lays out his DELP model (an expansion of Aristotle's ethos, logos, pathos to include demos — understanding your specific audience), explains why intelligent, critical-thinking people are often the most convincing propagandists to themselves, and draws a sharp line between persuasion, manipulation and propaganda that every speaker standing on a stage should sit with.We also get into why spontaneous, unscripted delivery reads as more truthful than polished delivery (with Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" as the example), and why AI's tendency to flatter you is quietly making this problem worse, not better. In this episode:Why charisma is built, not innate, and why it matters more now than when Owen wrote The Charismatic Edge in 2013The DELP model: demos, ethos, logos, pathosWhy perceived authenticity beats actual authenticity, and why spontaneity reads as truthWhy critical thinking doesn't protect you from bad beliefs (argumentation vs investigation)Motivated reasoning, naive realism, and sacred values: why smart people hold ridiculous beliefsThe difference between persuasion, manipulation and propaganda, and why every speaker is, to a degree, a propagandistOwen's practical tools: the belief audit, the feels right/fits in/makes sense framework, and E-Prime languageConnect with Owen on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/owenfitzp/The book and the special workshop are available at https://innerpropaganda.com, and you can discover more about Owen and his work at https://owenfitzpatrick.comFAQWhat is Owen Fitzpatrick's DELP model? The DELP model is Owen Fitzpatrick's expansion of Aristotle's rhetorical triad of ethos, logos and pathos. Owen adds demos, the requirement to understand the specific audience being addressed, alongside ethos (credibility and positioning), logos (logical structure and evidence) and pathos (emotional impact). What is Owen Fitzpatrick's book Inner Propaganda about?Inner Propaganda is Owen Fitzpatrick's book, to be released on 4th of August 2026, about how individuals generate their own propaganda internally through feelings, self-narratives and motivated reasoning. It argues that people convince themselves of beliefs the same way state propaganda convinces populations, through internal versions of state media, indoctrination and truth engineering. What is the difference between persuasion, manipulation and propaganda, according to Owen Fitzpatrick?Persuasion is the ethical attempt to change beliefs, attitudes or behaviour while genuinely caring about what the other person wants. Manipulation uses deception and serves only the persuader's own interests. Propaganda combines both, using every available tool of persuasion and manipulation to construct an entire reality for the audience. Why doesn't critical thinking protect people from believing false things?According to Owen Fitzpatrick, critical thinking and intelligence make people better at constructing airtight arguments (argumentation) rather than at genuinely investigating what is true (investigation). Motivated reasoning, a concept from psychologist Ziva Kunda, refers to people reasoning toward conclusions they already want to be true. What is naive realism?Naive realism is the belief that one's own perception of reality is objectively accurate and shared by anyone reasonable. Owen Fitzpatrick argues this prevents people from applying the same critical scrutiny to their own beliefs that they readily apply to beliefs they disagree with. What is E-Prime language and why does Owen Fitzpatrick use it?E-Prime is a form of English that eliminates the verb "to be," originally developed by David Bourland based on Alfred Korzybski's work on language and semantics. Owen Fitzpatrick uses it as a belief-flexibility tool: replacing "this is true" with "this seems true to me" builds in the possibility of revision.Visit https://strategic-speaker.scoreapp.com to take the 2-minute Strategic Speaking Business Audit and find out what's blocking you from getting more bookings, re-bookings, referrals and bigger fees. “Unglaublich, was du leistest.”

Celebration as Christopher and Natalie hit a milestone most podcasts never reach: episode 150. In this unscripted, no-notes conversation, they pull back the curtain on what it's actually taken to keep Dating Intelligence going — the burnout, the format pivots, the moments they almost quit — and why the real work was never about dating advice, it was about doing the inner work themselves first. They talk candidly about authenticity versus performance, building community that actually sticks, and how personal transformation shows up in everything from relationships to money to how you show up on camera. Then they shift gears entirely: road trip stories, DJ Nani makes an appearance, and a reminder that even people who talk about relationships for a living are still figuring it out in real time.  Key  topics Milestone celebration and behind-the-scenes stories The importance of authenticity and inner work in personal growth Strategies for building community and meaningful connections Insights on podcasting evolution and content format changes The role of humor, energy, and authenticity in hosting and relationships Celebration of 150 episodes Personal growth and transformation Road trip stories and snacks Music and self-expression Vulnerability and evolution in life and podcasting Chapters: 00:00 Introduction and Milestone Celebration 00:30 Host Appreciation and Show Evolution 01:49 Overcoming Burnout and Staying Motivated 02:47 The Power of Authenticity and Charisma 04:00 How Social Media Sparks Led to Collaboration 07:55 Podcast Format Changes and Video Integration 08:50 The Importance of Perspective in Relationships 12:01 Handling Toxic Environments and Energy Management 15:02 Personal Stories of Overcoming Challenges 19:54 Event Highlights and Community Building 24:00 The Intersection of Romance and Finance 26:59 Unblocking Mindsets for Better Opportunities 30:01 Road Trip Adventures and Personal Growth 31:06 Closing Remarks and Future Plans 32:29 Wedding in Utah and Celebrating Love 34:15 Yin and Yang in Relationships 36:03 Road Trip Snacks and Music Rituals 48:01 Memorable Road Trip Moments 54:38 Favorite Music and Playlist Tips 01:00:33 Reflections on Growth and Future Goals Links: Alyssa Jenkins - Genesis Wealth Partners - https://www.linkedin.com/in/alyssajenkins Natalie Stavola - Coach and Podcast Host - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nataliestavola Christopher Louis - Podcast Host - https://www.instagram.com/christopherlouisdate Natalie Stavola Coaching - https://nataliestavolacoach.com DatingMentality.com - https://datingmentality.com LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/natalie-stavola Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nataliestavola Dating Intelligence - https://www.dating-intelligence.com

What if greatness isn't about the rank you achieve... but the lives you leave behind? In 2004, Brigadier General (Ret.) Dr. Sheila Baxter became the first African American woman in the history of the Army Medical Service Corps to achieve the rank of Brigadier General. But that's not the story that stayed with me. The story that stayed with me was the young basketball player from Franklin, Virginia who simply loved serving people. The lieutenant whose commander challenged her to write a 20-year career plan. The officer who almost left the Army... ...and didn't. The leader who discovered that the higher you rise, the more humble you should become. And the retired general who could have spent retirement anywhere but instead chose to serve unhoused veterans, build affordable housing, and continue changing lives. In this conversation, we talk about:▪️ Why passion matters more than titles▪️ The mentors who changed the course of her life▪️ How to stay humble while leading at the highest levels▪️ What it really feels like to carry the weight of being "the first"▪️ Why she believes Army leadership prepares you for anything in life▪️ The importance of listening before making life-changing decisions▪️ The transition from commanding thousands of Soldiers to serving veterans on the streets of AtlantaOne quote I haven't stopped thinking about:"The higher you go, the more humble you should become."This isn't just an episode for Army leaders. It's for anyone trying to become a better leader, mentor, parent, teammate, or human being.I left this conversation inspired and I think you will too. Sheila R. Baxter is a native of Franklin, Virginia. She was born on 4 April 1955 to the proud parents of (late) John and Mary Baxter. She is one of five children and credits her parents for providing a loving home and family. In 1973, she graduated from Franklin High School. She completed her undergraduate education at Virginia State (now University) in 1977, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. She was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1978 after completing the Reserve Officer Training Corps, and she earned recognition as a Distinguished Military Graduate from Virginia State University. She holds a master's degree in health services management from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, and a Master of Divinity from the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia. In May 2024, Baxter completed a Doctor of Ministry degree from the ITC.Her doctoral qualitative research focused on creating access to services for women and men experiencing homelessness in Forest Park, Georgia.     Baxter's military experience began in 1978 as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corps. Throughout her 30 year career, she enjoyed a variety of command and staff assignments including Chief of Staff, Medical Research and Materiel Command, Fort Detrick, Maryland; Logistics Officer for 1st Medical Group, Fort Hood, Texas; Commander, 226th Medical Logistics Battalion in Pirmasens, Germany; Commander, United States Medical Materiel Center, Europe; Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics for the Army Surgeon General and Commanding General, Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, Washington.  In 2004, Baxter became the first African American woman to achieve the rank of Brigadier General in the Army Medical Service Corps. From 2004-2008, she served as Chief of the Medical Service Corps for approximately 9,000 active and Reserve Medical Corps officers. From 2005 to 2008, as Commanding General of Madigan Army Medical Center, she oversaw medical care for more than 40,000 Soldiers and 100,000 beneficiaries across Alaska, California, and Washington. She oversaw a $300 million budget. A screening and health assessment program for returning deployed Soldiers implemented at Madigan during her tenure became a model for the Army.      Brigadier General (Retired) Baxter is a Veteran of the first Gulf War (1990-1991) and has led thousands of Soldiers throughout her 30-year career.      Among her awards, decorations, and badges are the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with 4 (OLC), the Army Commendation Medal with 2 (OLC), the Army Achievement Medal with 2 (OLC), the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Army Staff Badge, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, and the Expert Field Medical Badge.  She is a member of the Military Medical Merit. In July 2002, she received the Honorary Silver Award for excellence in community service from the Lord Mayor of Pirmasens, Germany. In the October 2005 issue of Newsweek magazine, she was recognized as one of the 20 Most Powerful Women in America. In 2009, she became a lifetime member of the National Scholars Honor Society, recognized for her outstanding academic achievements and personal excellence. Baxter's accomplishments as a leader have been highlighted in magazines such as Jet, Ebony, and Charisma. In 2015, she was chosen as one of Virginia's Strong Women in History by the Library of Virginia. From 2011 to 2021, Baxter served as a staff chaplain for unhoused Veterans at the Atlanta VA Healthcare System in Decatur, Georgia. In 2025, Baxter was honored with the Presidential Award for Community Service by President Joe Biden.     She actively serves as a committee member for the Trustee Board of the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta, Georgia. She is an Executive Board member for the National Board for Occupational Therapists. She serves in ministry as a District Missionary, Living Word District COGIC, Forest Park, Georgia under the leadership of Superintendent, Dr. Kenneth Paden. Her hobbies include spending time with family, reading, traveling, watching sports, especially college basketball (March Madness) and Professional Bull Riding. Currently, Baxter continues to assist homeless Veterans and civilians through a non-profit organization called Veterans Haven House. If your porch light seems to attract every moth and flying insect in the neighborhood, you're not imagining it. Scientists have finally figured out why artificial lights are so irresistible to many insects—and knowing what they've discovered can help you keep more bugs away this summer. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-44785-3 Some people seem to light up a room the moment they walk in. Others naturally draw people in, inspire confidence, and make lasting impressions. We call it charisma, and many assume you're either born with it or you're not. Olivia Fox Cabane says that's simply not true. In this conversation, she explains what charisma really is, why it's often misunderstood, and the surprisingly practical skills anyone can learn to become more influential and engaging. Olivia has advised leaders at Google, Deloitte, UBS, MGM, and TikTok, and is author of The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism (https://amzn.to/44kpuyI). For decades, we've talked about "the midlife crisis" as though it's inevitable. But what if we've gotten midlife completely wrong? Research suggests that your middle years can be one of the most productive, satisfying, and influential periods of your life. So why does this stage have such a negative reputation? And what are people in midlife uniquely positioned to do that younger and older adults often can't? Margie Lachman, Professor of Psychology at Brandeis University and director of the Lifespan Lab, shares a fresh, evidence-based perspective on why midlife deserves a lot more celebration than sympathy. She is author of Primetime: A New Vision for Midlife (https://amzn.to/4bpLbRJ). Have you ever searched everywhere for your keys or your glasses, only to discover they were sitting in plain sight the whole time? It's a surprisingly common experience, and it reveals something fascinating about how your brain decides what you do—and don't—see. https://dictionary.apa.org/inattentional-blindness PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS WAYFAIR: Ready to upgrade your home for way less? As part of The Lo Life's Level Up Series, Lo explores the skills that can help you thrive personally and professionally—and few are more misunderstood than charisma. This week, Lo sits down with internationally renowned charisma expert and New York Times bestselling author Olivia Fox Cabane, whose groundbreaking research has helped reshape the way leaders, entrepreneurs, and everyday people think about influence, connection, and presence. Drawing on decades of work at institutions including Stanford and MIT, and coaching leaders at Google, Apple, Airbnb, TikTok, Deloitte, and UBS, Olivia has become one of the world's leading voices on the science of charisma. Her own journey—from describing herself as introverted, socially awkward and autistic to becoming a globally recognized expert on human connection—makes her perspective all the more compelling. In this conversation, Lo and Olivia unpack why charisma isn't an innate gift but a learnable skill rooted in psychology and behavioral science. They explore how charisma influences leadership, careers, relationships, interviews, and everyday interactions, while examining how the rules have evolved in an era where our digital presence can be just as important as the person we are face-to-face. They also discuss why introverts can be deeply charismatic, the historical misconceptions surrounding charisma, and how these skills can be used to build trust, inspire others, and shape the next generation. And you've been paying for that one little sentence ever since. It doesn't feel like a lie. It feels like being honest and humble about your own limits. You're not bragging when you say you're just not wired that way. It actually sounds modest, self-aware even. Which is exactly why it's so easy to live inside it for decades. But a limit you've never actually tested isn't humility. It's a guess you've been treating like a hard fact. In this solo Wednesday episode drawn from his What's Real newsletter, Jason dismantles the born-with-it myth using one of the most famous women who ever lived, a researcher who spent her career studying what people believe about their own potential, and thirteen years of bombing in front of crowds before figuring out what actually works. Charisma isn't a gift. It's a skill. And if the one trait everyone is surest is hardwired from birth turns out to be learnable — so is everything else you've written off about yourself. In this episode, Jason covers: The lie that sounds like humility — and why that's exactly what makes it so expensive Marilyn Monroe on the New York City subway in 1955 — and what happened 15 seconds later on the sidewalk The charisma course built for UC Berkeley's business school — and why you don't build a curriculum for something people are born with The three learnable behaviors that make up what everyone calls charisma Why “I'm just not” is the cheapest cage to build — and what it actually costs you Carol Dweck's research on fixed vs. growth mindset — and the one word that changes everything What Jason's 13 years as a pastor and years teaching bored teenagers actually taught him about presence The one uncomfortable thing to do this week that contradicts the sentence you've been repeating for years What Proverb 9:9 says about wisdom — and why the fool's problem was never his raw material The door was never locked. This episode will show you where the key has been sitting all along.

Evolutionary psychologist Steve Stewart-Williams joins me this episode for a wide-ranging discussion on what makes humans tick — biological sex differences, the mechanics of attraction, how relationships and personality take shape, and the contested science that tries to explain all of it. Steve teaches psychology at the University of Nottingham Malaysia and has written Darwin, God and the Meaning of Life, The Ape That Understood the Universe, and most recently A Billion Years of Sex Differences. Together we get into why his field draws so much political heat and misreading from every direction. Steve breaks down how traditionalists and progressives each manage to distort what the research actually shows, why acknowledging biology's role isn't a backdoor argument for old-fashioned gender roles, and why explaining how human nature works says nothing about how a society ought to be organized. 00:00 Intro 07:55 Are Sex Differences Biological or Cultural? 14:23 How Steve Discovered Evolutionary Psychology 17:48 Why Male and Female Mating Strategies Differ 21:18 Mate-Choice Copying and the Wedding Ring Effect 29:35 The Gender-Equality Paradox 36:11 Male and Female Personality Differences 38:15 Parenthood, Depression and Modern Life 45:06 Male Suicide, Therapy and Mental Health 50:05 Psychology's Replication Crisis 56:29 Will Sex Differences Ever Disappear? 1:01:54 The Largest Psychological Sex Differences 1:06:14 Patriarchy and Social-Media Narratives About Men 1:16:25 Prenatal Testosterone and Twin Studies 1:25:27 Sexual Orientation, Crime and Gender Differences 1:27:52 Casual Sex and Sexual Overperception 1:36:22 Rival Derogation and Mate Selection 1:41:06 Dating Apps, Hypergamy and Attraction 1:46:06 Why Humor, Charisma and Competence Are Attractive 1:52:25 Evolutionary Theories That Were Proven Wrong 1:53:49 Wokeness and Conformity in Academia 2:03:01 The Argument Against Innate Sex Differences 2:05:32 A Billion Years of Sex Differences 2:06:46 Using AI for Research and Debate Preparation 2:14:14 Final Dating Insights and Closing Thoughts ————————————————————

In this solo episode, Mark argues that leaders are the missing link between disciples and churches, and real leaders are formed through responsibility, not just information. The episode presses into why charisma creates false starts, why faithfulness has to be proven locally, and why disciple-making DNA and church stewardship both matter. Main ideas: - Likability is the residue of an interaction: did someone make you feel good, and would you look forward to seeing them again? - It is subjective but not completely arbitrary. Smiling, warmth, tone, body language, humour, listening and word choice are recurring ingredients. - Likability is learnable and effectively free. The speakers reject the idea that people are simply born likable or unlikable. - Messaging can matter as much as the message. A strong idea presented by a disliked person may fail; a weak idea presented by a likable person may spread. - It is a multiplier for competence. Workplaces may reject brilliant performers whom colleagues actively avoid. - Conversation is “social tennis.” Likable people return the conversational ball rather than trying to ace the other person. - Life is a multiplayer game. A useful shift is from “What do I want to do?” to “How can I make this game or interaction better for everyone?” - Being good energy matters. The speakers suggest intentionally creating periods—perhaps once a week—when friends or partners set their problems aside and have fun. - Context changes the recipe. Humour may dominate in public or parasocial settings, while empathy and feeling understood matter more one-to-one. - There is a golden mean. Too little likability becomes abrasive; too much becomes approval-seeking. If it is merely a tool for getting what you want, it becomes manipulation. - Authenticity and mission can compensate for abrasiveness. Musk, Jobs and Trump are presented as examples of people liked by some precisely because they appear uncompromising. - Political likability can be dangerous. Charisma can acquire power, override policy evaluation and attach people to ideas or leaders. - Disagreement need not be disagreeable. Likability includes hearing opposing views, separating people from their ideas, and allowing disagreement without personal rejection. - Ideas themselves can be likable. An emotionally appealing idea can propagate even if its practical outcomes are poor—the speakers use socialism and Marxism as their contentious example. - Growth encourages positive-sum thinking. One speaker argues that low economic growth intensifies tribal and zero-sum conflict, while renewed growth—potentially driven by AI—could encourage openness and cooperation. - Dale Carnegie's practical recipe receives the clearest endorsement: show genuine interest, smile and be warm, remember names, listen more than you speak, discuss the other person's interests, and make people feel sincerely valued.

Once the table finally escapes the opening chaos and cat crimes, Tyler, Randall, and Ash dive into Pathfinder 2e rogues, proving that the class is not just a sneaky knife gremlin. It is also a walking toolbox, a social menace, a battlefield problem, and so much more Show Notes This episode begins the RPGBOT.Podcast breakdown of Pathfinder 2e rogues, covering levels 1 through 10 and exploring how the class develops from nimble opportunist into a precision-damage nightmare with more skills than common sense. Tyler, Randall, and Ash each bring a different rogue racket to the table, with Tyler building a Mastermind, Ash building a Scoundrel, and Randall building a Ruffian. The conversation starts with the rogue's core identity: Sneak Attack, off-guard targets, excellent skills, strong Reflex saves, and the sheer absurdity of getting skill increases and skill feats constantly. The hosts explain how Pathfinder rogues differ from their 5e cousins, especially around precision damage, surprise attack, and how off-guard creates the opening rogues need to ruin someone's day. From there, the builds split into very different flavors of criminal excellence. Ash's Catfolk Scoundrel leans into Feint, Deception, diversions, social trickery, and making enemies easier to stab, hide from, or fireball. Tyler's Fetchling Mastermind turns Recall Knowledge into a combat engine, using information as a weapon and building toward automatic knowledge checks, scroll utility, and ranged support. Randall's Human Ruffian takes the direct approach with medium armor, intimidation, two-weapon tricks, gang-up tactics, and eventually debilitation options that make the whole party better at hurting things. Along the way, the hosts cover important rogue build choices including ancestry feats, racket features, armor considerations, weapon selection, class feats, general feats, and the sometimes painful reality that not every tempting rogue feat is worth taking. Twist the Knife gets called out as a trap compared to easier bleed options, while Gang Up, Analyze Weakness, Clever Gambit, Distracting Feint, Dazzling Diversion, Predictive Purchase, and racket-specific debilitations all get time in the spotlight. The episode closes by emphasizing that while these builds are combat-focused, rogues are not limited to combat. With their enormous number of skill feats and skill increases, rogues can be investigators, con artists, diplomats, criminals, spies, consultants, bullies, burglars, or social wrecking balls. In true RPGBOT fashion, the takeaway is clear: you can optimize the stabbing, but you still have plenty of room left to optimize the nonsense. Key Takeaways Pathfinder 2e rogues are skill monsters. They gain more skill increases and skill feats than almost anyone else, making them great in combat, exploration, social encounters, and weird niche problem-solving. Sneak Attack is the rogue's core damage feature, but it depends on the target being off-guard and on using the right kinds of weapons or attacks. Surprise Attack helps rogues get Sneak Attack early in combat by making creatures off-guard if the rogue rolls Deception or Stealth for initiative and acts before them. Rogue rackets dramatically change how the class plays. Scoundrels manipulate enemies with Feint and Deception, Masterminds weaponize Recall Knowledge, and Ruffians use intimidation, armor, and heavier weapons to bully the battlefield. Ash's Scoundrel build focuses on Charisma, Feint, Deception, and making enemies vulnerable through off-guard, dazzled, Reflex penalties, and tactical debilitations. Tyler's Mastermind build turns Recall Knowledge into a combat strategy, using it to make enemies off-guard, trigger extra movement, support allies, and set up extra damage through Analyze Weakness. Randall's Ruffian build leans into durability, melee pressure, medium armor, intimidation, Gang Up, and debilitation options that add weaknesses or penalties to enemies. Medium armor can work for a rogue, especially a Ruffian, but noisy armor is a bad idea if you still want to sneak. Weapon choice matters. Kukris, shortbows, agile and finesse weapons, and qualifying Ruffian weapons all interact differently with Sneak Attack and critical specialization. Analyze Weakness is a strong rogue feat for builds that can reliably identify enemies, adding extra precision-style damage when the rogue wants one hit to matter more. Gang Up is excellent for melee rogues because it makes off-guard easier to trigger without needing perfect flanking positions. Twist the Knife sounds fun, but the hosts flag it as a trap because weapon runes can often provide better bleed damage with less action cost. Debilitating Strike at level 9 is a major rogue power bump, letting Sneak Attack also impose conditions like speed penalties or enfeebled. Level 10 racket-specific debilitations make rogues even nastier. Masterminds gain support-focused options, Ruffians can add damage weaknesses or clumsy, and Scoundrels can shut down reactions or flanking. The builds in this episode are combat-focused, but rogues can easily become outstanding social and exploration characters because they have so many skill feats to spend. Rogues are not just sneaky stabbers. They can be detectives, con artists, crime lords, rich bullies, diplomats, vault testers, information brokers, and every other flavor of charming disaster. Most people think charisma is a mystical gift you're either born with or not. It isn't. In this episode of DarrenDaily On-Demand, Darren Hardy draws on research from Princeton's Dr. Susan Fiske to reveal that charisma comes down to two qualities working at the same time: warmth and competence. Most of us lead with one and starve the other. The competent come across as cold and suspicious; the warm trade credibility for likability. Darren breaks down how to tell which camp you're in and how to balance the scales so people both trust you and rely on you. Get more personal mentoring from Darren each day. “Communication is the number one way to remove friction.”If communication is the key to connection, then removing friction is what makes every interaction work. According to Vanessa Van Edwards, the most effective communicators aren't just skilled with words—they know how to align their gestures, body language, and presence to make others feel at ease. A behavioral researcher and bestselling author of Captivate and Cues, Van Edwards studies the subtle signals that shape how we are perceived. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, she joins Matt Abrahams to explore the hidden factors that influence communication, from purposeful gestures and expressive body language to the words, images, and visual cues that build trust and credibility.Takeaways:Great communication goes beyond words. Gestures, facial expressions, visual cues, and even the language we use in emails and meetings can either create friction or build trust, clarity, and connection.Focus on the other person, not yourself. By applying the Platinum Rule—treating others as they want to be treated—and intentionally putting people at ease, communicators can foster stronger relationships, deeper conversations, and greater influence.Activity:Practice the Platinum Rule. Before your next important conversation, meeting, or email, take one minute to answer: “What does this person need from me right now?” Then tailor your communication to their priorities, concerns, and preferred style—not your own. Afterward, reflect on how that shift changed the quality of the interaction.Printable PDF of Takeaways & ActivityEpisode Reference Links:Vanessa Van EdwardsVanessa's Books: Cues / CaptivateEp.137 When Words Aren't Enough: How to Excel at Nonverbal Communication Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (01:01) - The Importance of Strategic Communication (01:45) - The Power of Gestures (04:10) - A Readiness Check for Speakers (05:56) - Over-Signaling vs. Under-Signaling (08:18) - Dangerous Words in Communication (12:27) - Imagery Cues & First Impressions (15:03) - Virtual Backgrounds Matter (17:33) - The Platinum Rule (19:01) - The Final Three Questions (23:59) - Conclusion
