“Cold Case” Clay Bryant unravels a 20-year old cold-case murder. After a daring escape from certain death in a North Vietnamese prison, followed by years in a refugee camp in Thailand, Savang Phovixay and his family sought safety and a better life in the United States. That dream was shattered when their daughter Vieng disappeared in October 1987. In spite of substantial leads, she remained missing until 1989 when her skeletonized remains were found bound to a tree in rural West Georgia. The crime remained an unsolved tragedy for nearly two decades until Bryant took on the case in search of justice for Vieng and her family. Lewis Clayton (Clay) Bryant was born and raised in Troup County, Georgia. In 1976, at the age of twenty-one, he became the youngest trooper on the Georgia State Patrol. In 1980, he became police chief of Hogansville and stayed in that position for twelve years until he resigned in 1992 and went into the private sector. He has been recognized as the most prolific cold case investigator in the United States for single-event homicides. His cases have been chronicled on 48 Hours Investigates, Bill Curtis's Cold Case Files and Discovery ID Murder Book and featured in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, as well as articles in many local and regional newspapers. Bryant resides in LaGrange. This is his second book. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Back discussing his latest book, the “most prolific cold case investigator in the United State for single-event homicides,” Chief Clay Bryant is here, chatting w. Jill about his newest book, on the murder of Vieng Phovixay. A young woman, with a harrowing family history, Vieng is poised on the brink of truly living the American Dream, when she suddenly went missing, her family stricken with fear and deep foreboding. Two years later, their beloved daughter and sister's decomposing body was found. Inexplicably, her case went cold, a bureaucracy ground slowly ahead, justice crushed under its weight—Until Clay Bryant learned of the case and set the matter right once again. We loved Clay Bryant's two previous books, covered in Episodes 66-69: Solving the West Georgia Murder of Gwendolyn Moore- A Cry from the Well, and The Cold Case Murder of Fred Wilkerson- Untangling the Black Widow's Web in West Georgia. Laos' Adventure Capital-Vang Vieng-Exploring It's BackRoads/Blue Lagoon Vang Vieng has come a long way since it's days as party central in Southeast Asia. Once the home of major tube parties, cheap booze and readily available drugs it has started to transform into an adventure capital. After a few unfortunate deaths/drownings in the Nam Song River the police dropped in and shut down alot of the river bars. You can still find some parties and tubing here but it's not like the old days. It's a pretty chill place and you are definitely exposed to more of the everyday simple life of Laos. There's much to appreciate here from kayaking the river, exploring the caves, and grabbing a motorbike to head for the backroads. Motorbike rental places are easy to find in Vang Vieng and most will help you with directions and even give you a map so you can explore the caves and lagoons of the region. Most caves have a small admission fee, and will most often loan you a lantern. Some will have guides you can hire as well. The Blue Lagoon is a place most hear about and want to visit when they arrive in Vang Vieng. You can catch a tuk tuk out to the Blue Lagoon, or rent mountain bikes, but it will be a hot a sweaty ride out there, forget about walking-the heat is too much for most. Two or three days in Vang Vieng should be enough to capture the essence of rural life and get in an adventure activity or two-some great rock climbing here to check out. Everything here from cheap guesthouses to lux settings on the river. Vang Vieng is an easy 3-3.5 hour bus ride from Vientienne. It's a great way to split up a much longer ride from the capital to Luang Prabang as well!Hope you enjoy the video! I also have an audio podcast in the iTunes Store where I chat about travel in Asia and invite followers and guests on the show with advice and to share travel experiences. In the 6th episode of the podcast series about my trip to Thailand and mostly Laos for all of April is described my last day in the astonishingly beautiful Luang Prabang where at the same day I visited the impressive Pak Ou caves with many Buddha statues and the magnificent Kuang Si waterfalls, a place of outstanding natural beauty where I also swam in its crystal clear turquoise waters. The latter is definitely one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The next day I left for Vang Vieng, a town built in Nam Song river in a flat surface but surrounded by a lot of amazing limestone cliffs. It has so many natural wonders very close that offer plenty of opportunities for exploration. Hundreds of caves, cliffs, blue Lagoons with splendid waters all of them very approachable, a fact that made me think that maybe this is the most suitable town to what I like as a traveller from every one I visited in Laos. I am sure that even a year there wouldn't be enough for me to visit all these tremendously beautiful places. However, I spent there 2 and a half days before going to Vientiane in order to catch a flight to Bangkok from where I will return back to London.
