Bangarang! Emilio, Madeline, and Julian fly, fight, and crow their way through this next "Unorthodox Holiday Movie" suggestion, and this is a special one, a movie suggested to them by multiple guests - "Hook", Steven Spielberg's take on the story of Peter Pan, released in 1991 starring Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts and more. The group welcomes back Tony-nominated performer, teacher, father, and "Hook" enthusiast and suggester Rob McClure to discuss this film from all angles. How do you square your experiences with the film as a kid versus revisiting it as an adult? Does Spielberg have good reason to dislike it? How much Peter Pan background is needed to fully enjoy 'Hook', or does it stand alone? The group discusses Spielberg's knack for getting great performances from children, Robin Williams' incredible range, Rufio's undeniable appeal, the elaborate sets, John Williams' underrated score, and its messages related to parenthood. Rob even brings a robust background in the J.M. Barrie's original text (and a collectible trading card) to the conversation, and even pulls out his highlighted copy to try to get to bottom of a pressing question. It's a great discussion about one of the 1990s most rewatched VHS tapes, and more beloved childhood favorites. Rob McClure has earned Tony nominations for his roles in the Broadway productions of Mrs. Doubtfire and Chaplin, and has also appeared in Something Rotten!, Mary Poppins, Hello Dolly, Beetlejuice, and many more productions On- and Off-Broadway. Pastor Greg Laurie sits down with rock icon Alice Cooper to trace his journey from shock-rock superstardom to a surrendered life in Christ. Cooper explains how the “Alice” persona was a theatrical villain—“Captain Hook” to everyone's Peter Pan—while real life offstage spiraled into alcohol and drugs. At his lowest, doctors warned he had about a month to live, and he recalls terrifying moments like seeing “blood coming out of my eyes.” Returning to the faith of his youth, he says Jesus is “everything,” the only answer fame and excess couldn't provide. Now long-sober, Cooper draws a clear line between the stage character and his Christian convictions, refuses to glamorize evil, and channels his influence into ministry work like Phoenix's The Rock Teen Center to give kids hope and purpose. He closes by urging listeners: if the Lord is knocking, answer. Jaggy and I thank you for tuning in and SHARING!

For our final episode in this summer's Drive-In series, we review the film, "Hook," a cinematic endeavor released in 1991, which features the esteemed talents of Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. We engage in a critical discourse regarding the film's unjust placement on the list of poorly rated movies, as evidenced by its subpar score on Rotten Tomatoes. Our examination delves into the narrative elements, character arcs, and thematic undercurrents that contribute to the film's enduring appeal, particularly in relation to the themes of nostalgia, familial bonds, and the importance of childlike wonder. As we explore our personal connections to the film, we articulate our perspectives on its merits and shortcomings, striving to ascertain whether its critical reception aligns with our own sentiments. Ultimately, we invite listeners to reflect on their interpretations of "Hook," as we navigate the complexities of nostalgia and cinematic critique in our discussion. The dialogue centers around the cinematic exploration of 'Hook,' a film that presents a reimagined narrative of Peter Pan, now portrayed as an adult grappling with the responsibilities of life. The hosts express their disbelief at the film's low Rotten Tomatoes rating, which they categorize as a profound injustice against a film that resonates deeply with themes of nostalgia and the complexities of adulthood. Their discussion unveils the intricate layers of the plot, which follows Peter's journey from a work-obsessed lawyer back to the world of Neverland, where he confronts the infamous Captain Hook, a character brought to life by the talented Dustin Hoffman.Throughout the podcast, the hosts engage in a reflective analysis of the film's thematic elements, particularly the dichotomy between childhood innocence and adult responsibilities. They underscore the importance of imagination and the loss of one's youthful spirit, positing that these concepts are pivotal to the film's narrative. The hosts also critique certain aspects of the film, such as its pacing and length, suggesting that a more concise structure could enhance its overall impact, yet they remain steadfast in their admiration for its emotional depth. In wrapping up their discourse, the hosts invite listeners to reassess 'Hook' not merely through the lens of critical reviews but as a profound exploration of the human experience. They emphasize the film's ability to evoke powerful emotions and provoke thought, ultimately urging audiences to embrace its messages about family, adventure, and the enduring power of imagination.Takeaways: The film 'Hook' explores the theme of rediscovering one's childhood and the importance of imagination, as Peter Pan learns to reconnect with his inner child. Critics have often dismissed 'Hook' as a failure, yet the film resonates deeply with audiences who appreciate its nostalgic value and emotional depth. The portrayal of Captain Hook in 'Hook' adds complexity to the character, showcasing his desire for revenge and reclamation of honor, rather than presenting him as a one-dimensional villain. Despite its low Rotten Tomatoes score, 'Hook' features strong performances, particularly by Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman, contributing to its enduring appeal and cultural significance. .We discuss all this and more in this one! Six scoundrels had gathered: Captain Hook was plotting his revenge, Jafar envisioned ruling unopposed, Maleficent smiled at the thought of thorns engulfing the kingdom, Prince John was devising new taxes to fill his coffers, the Queen of Hearts brooded over her next decree of decapitation, while Ursula lounged with a sly grin, imagining helpless souls entangled in her tentacles. Each was driven to prove their wickedness and become the evilest Disney Villainous: The Worst Takes it All by Aaron Donogh, Brian Kirk and Prospero Hall from Ravensburger.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/04/12/disney-villainous-the-worst-takes-it-all-saturday-review/Useful LinksDisney Villainous: The Worst Takes it All: https://www.ravensburger.co.uk/en-GB/products/games/strategy-games/disney-villainous-26295Rulebook: https://www.ravensburger.co.uk/gameinstructions/ecm/Spielanleitungen/26295%20anl%202050897.pdfRules Video: https://youtu.be/8wdvXKRfoPI?si=8wlIOKbdAh7zr0-KRavensburger: https://www.ravensburger.co.uk/BGG listing: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/256382/disney-villainous-the-worst-takes-it-allRoot review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2022/02/12/root-a-game-of-woodland-might-and-right-saturday-review/Oath review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2021/11/27/oath-chronicles-of-empire-and-exile-saturday-review/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: "Fortress" by AShamaluevMusic.Website: https://www.ashamaluevmusic.comMusic: Cinematic Suspense Series Episode 008 by Sascha EndeLink: https://filmmusic.io/en/song/7669-cinematic-suspense-series-episode-008SupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/
Everyone knows Captain Hook got swallowed by the crocodile at the end of Peter Pan. But what this movie presupposes is…maybe he didn't? Let us go back to a time when the coolest thing a kid could have was a clubhouse that looked like a skatepark…when the worst thing a dad could do was own a cell phone…and when the craziest thing a filmmaker could do was agree to make a movie that started off as a child's drawing. Lin-Manuel Miranda - most famous for starring as Captain Hook in his sixth grade production of Peter Pan - joins us on a trip to Neverland as we unpack Spielberg's 1991 fantasia Hook. We sprang forward last week and are celebrating our hour lost with three Three for Thursdays. We named our celebration, too. Threes for Thursday. If you, like Jay, are watching the “Primus Interstellar Drum Derby” series on YouTube, then the last episode you saw was Mike Stone's audition. Prior to the episode, Mr. Stone had recently recorded a song and an album with Secret Chiefs 3. Les Claypool was quite impressed by this fact. You may have wondered, who is Secret Chiefs 3? Jay did, too, and he looked into it and shares what he found.Songs:Secret Chiefs 3 - “The Four (Great Ashra Ki Sun)”Secret Chiefs 3/Traditionalists - “What's Wrong With Cytherea”Secret Chiefs 3 - “Chitzonuyut” (John Zorn)We lost the massively influential vibraphonist, composer, and producer, Roy Ayers, this past week. The “Godfather of Neo Soul” began in bebop and migrated to the jazz funk scene in the early 1970s. His music has been sample hundreds of times over the past 4 decades, most often by rappers. Nick presents some of his signature tracks.Songs:Roy Ayers - “Sound and Sense”Roy Ayers Ubiquity - “Everybody Loves the Sunshine”Roy Ayers Ubiquity - “We Live in Brooklyn, Baby”Kendrick Lamar - “Good Kid” (first 30 sec)As demonstrated thus far, we often have themes when presenting a Three For Thursday. This is often just to demonstrate that we've invested slightly more effort than the segment initially called for. Greg takes it to the next level this week by offering a sub-genre of the segment. “Captain Hook” is a Three For Thursday featuring songs with impeccable hooks. Greg closes us out this week with Part 1 of “Captain Hook.”.Songs:Bad Bad Not Good - “Last Laugh”Aphex Twin - “Flim”Fontaines DC - “Here's the Thing”

This was a fine Monday crossword by Jack Scherban, and we're not just saying that because it referenced our phonetically favorite pirate, 60A, Captain Hook's right-hand man, SMEE, nor our favorite dessert, 37D, Black-and-white dessert that's sliced, OREOPIE. Rather, it was the theme, which brought back nostalgic memories (as well as a short-lived and, come to think of it, largely imaginary coughing spell

There you are, listener! This week, we eat hot dogs and colorful cupcakes before discussing Hook (1991). Captain Hook and Smee steal the show and Peter's children. This would be a great movie about the gay power couple named after the fabulous captain. Alas, it's loosely about Peter's need to become a better father. The film has some moments of endearment mixed in with nonconsensual kisses and strange generational love. Watch this film as an adult and you start to see behind the creepy curtain but with a child's eyes, it's bangerang. RIP Rufio.

Alan and Rob return after five years in deep space a brief hiatus to talk all about the beloved (depending on what age you are!) holiday classic “Hook” about an older Peter Pan, played by the late great Robin Williams. J.M. Barrie, the fascinating Scottish writer, gave us Peter Pan - the boy who never grows up, and his notorious pirate nemesis: Captain Hook. But where did this iconic rivalry come from, and how did Barrie's fascination with both youth and pirates shape this timeless story? Barrie's life, marked by personal tragedy and complex relationships, set the stage for a world where innocence meets adventure on the high seas. The figure of Captain Hook looms large over Peter Pan. Modelled partly on the infamous privateer Christopher Newport, who ruled Caribbean waters with a missing arm, Hook embodies the darker side of Neverland. Inspired by his relationship with the Llewelyn Davies family, Barrie crafted Peter Pan as a tribute to these young boys who captured his heart. Yet, their lives would be marked by profound loss, shadowing the whimsy of the Lost Boys with tragedy. Join William and Anita as they dive into the origins of Barrie's Peter Pan and the history behind Neverland's fictional pirates.
