Why Did Elijah Vue's Mother Photograph Her Blindfolded Son at 3AM and Then Erase It?

Elijah Vue's biological father was in prison. The man his mother chose to care for him had a felony for harming a child, trafficking charges, and a federal drug conviction. His mother had once told police that the same man had trafficked her — and then, years later, placed her three-year-old in his apartment for “disciplinary reasons.” There was nowhere safe for this child to land. And no one intervened. The criminal complaint in this case lays out a relationship between Katrina Baur and Jesse Vang that goes back years — through trafficking allegations, federal prison, and a power dynamic Baur herself described to investigators as a “structure” with Elijah's father as “the alpha.” By February 2024, that dynamic had put a toddler inside a Two Rivers apartment where he was being subjected to what Vang called “boot camp.” Standing timeouts lasting hours. Cold water. His one toy confiscated. One diaper change per day. Text messages between Baur and Vang show them coordinating: Vang promised to make the boy hate him, and Baur replied with a correction — not hate, fear.A deleted photograph showed Elijah blindfolded and bruised at 3:13 in the morning. His mother took it, erased it, and drove home. Both Baur and Vang now face felony charges in connection with Elijah's death. Both have pleaded not guilty. Vang faces life in prison. Tony Brueski goes deep on who these people were, how they were connected, and the question that defines this first segment: how did a three-year-old end up surrounded by adults who were either locked up, accused, or complicit — with nobody standing between him and what happened next?Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? On September 7, 2024, a man preparing his private property for hunting season found skeletal remains in a wooded area with heavy underbrush near a quarry and the entrance to Camp Manitou — a Girl Scout camp roughly three miles from Jesse Vang's apartment in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. The area had been searched before. Multiple times. DNA testing confirmed the remains belonged to three-year-old Elijah Vue, who had been reported missing seven months earlier. How remains end up in a location that was previously searched is one of the questions that hangs over this investigation. But it's not the only one. The criminal complaint lays out a timeline that dismantles everything Vang and Baur told police. Vang said he was home watching Netflix the night before the 911 call — but surveillance footage shows him driving a borrowed car around town while his phone sat at the apartment. He was captured dropping a suitcase at a donation center. That suitcase tested positive for Elijah's DNA. Within sixty seconds of Vang's 911 call, Baur messaged him with instructions on what to say. She deleted the message. Investigators recovered it.Forensic examination of Elijah's remains showed healed fractures on his skull and face — injuries sustained weeks before he died. His blanket was found 3.7 miles from the apartment in a separate location. The manner of death was ruled homicide. Both Vang and Baur face felony charges and have pleaded not guilty. Tony Brueski breaks down the investigative timeline with a reporter who covered every phase — from the first search to the DNA confirmation — and what the evidence tells us about the case heading to trial.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Jesse Vang faces life in prison. Katrina Baur faces sixty years. Both are charged in the death of Baur's three-year-old son Elijah Vue. Both have pleaded not guilty. And both are heading toward separate trials in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. The question hovering over every pretrial hearing: will one of them cooperate against the other? The evidence already creates pressure. Text messages between Baur and Vang document what the criminal complaint describes as coordinated cruelty against a toddler. A deleted photograph from Baur's phone. A suitcase with Elijah's DNA that Vang dropped at a donation center while his phone was at home building a false alibi. And a Facebook message Baur sent within sixty seconds of Vang's 911 call, coaching him on what to say to police — a message she deleted and investigators recovered. The evidence ties both of them to what happened. But their charges are structured differently. Vang carries the direct harm charge. Baur carries neglect. That gap could become leverage. The pretrial fight has gone against the defense so far — venue change denied, outside jurors denied, sequestration denied. A forensic evidence challenge over sand and gravel is still pending. Vang was on federal supervised release when all of this happened, and nobody in the system flagged that a three-year-old had been placed in his home. Tony Brueski breaks down the legal positioning, the evidence each defendant faces, and whether the separate trial structure creates an opening for one to flip — with a reporter who has been covering every court appearance.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Elijah Vue was three years old. His father was in prison. The criminal complaint describes what happened inside that Two Rivers apartment as a coordinated campaign: standing punishments, cold water, text messages between Baur and Vang about making a toddler afraid. A deleted photograph of the boy blindfolded and bruised. And when Elijah was reported missing, a cover story coached within sixty seconds of the 911 call. The investigation recovered almost everything they allegedly tried to erase. Surveillance footage dismantled Vang's alibi. A suitcase at a thrift store tested positive for the child's DNA. Deleted messages were pulled from both phones. Seven months of community searching ended when a hunter found Elijah's remains three miles from the apartment. Forensic findings: healed fractures, prolonged harm, homicide. Now both face trials in Manitowoc County. Vang faces life. Baur faces sixty years. A judge denied every motion to move the case. A forensic evidence fight is still pending. And the question that no trial can fully answer: who failed this child? A federal system that didn't flag a toddler in a felon's home? Jesse Vang had a felony conviction for harming a child when he was seventeen. He'd been charged with human trafficking. He'd done federal time for a drug conspiracy. And when he was released in 2022, he was placed on supervised release through 2025. By February 2024, Katrina Baur was dropping off her three-year-old son at Vang's apartment in Two Rivers, Wisconsin for what she described as “disciplinary reasons.” The question that hangs over this case: did anyone around Jesse Vang know what his record looked like before Elijah Vue disappeared? The criminal complaint paints a picture of coordinated cruelty between Baur and Vang. Text messages show two people discussing how to make a toddler “fear” them. A deleted photograph recovered from Baur's phone shows Elijah blindfolded and bruised at 3:13 in the morning. Standing punishments lasting hours. Cold water. One diaper change a day. Vang called it “boot camp.” Baur called it teaching her son “how to be a man.” Elijah was three years old, still in diapers, still bottle-fed.And the history between these two adults goes deeper than anyone initially realized. In 2015, Baur herself told police that Vang had trafficked her — that she was his “property.” Those charges were eventually dropped. Years later, she put her child in his care. Both now face felony charges in connection with Elijah's death. Both have pleaded not guilty. Tony Brueski breaks down who Jesse Vang and Katrina Baur are, the “structure” Baur described between Vang and Elijah's biological father, and what Two Rivers knew — and didn't know — about the man living in that apartment on Mishicot Road.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Surveillance cameras in Two Rivers, Wisconsin captured Jesse Vang pulling up to the donation door of a St. Vincent de Paul store on February 19, 2024 and dropping off a dark-colored suitcase. He'd borrowed a neighbor's Nissan Altima. He'd left his phone at home playing a Netflix movie. When investigators tracked down and tested that suitcase, the Wisconsin State Crime Lab found one DNA profile inside. It was Elijah Vue's.The next morning, Vang reported the three-year-old missing. He told police the boy walked off during a nap. That story was already being coordinated — Elijah's mother Katrina Baur sent Vang a message within sixty seconds of the 911 call telling him what to say. She deleted it. Investigators found it anyway. What unfolded over the next seven months was one of the largest searches in recent Wisconsin history. FBI agents, state investigators, community volunteers numbering in the hundreds. They searched landfills, rivers, storm drains, and private property. A $40,000 reward went unclaimed for months.A hunter found Elijah's remains in September 2024, three miles from Vang's apartment, in a wooded area that had been searched before. Jesse Vang faces harm to a child through repeated acts causing death — a charge that carries life in prison, filed with repeater enhancers because of his extensive criminal history. Katrina Baur faces chronic neglect of a child with consequence of death — up to sixty years, but structured around a fundamentally different theory of responsibility. Vang is charged as the direct actor. Baur is charged as the one who placed her child in harm's way and failed to protect him. Both have pleaded not guilty. That charging distinction tells a story on its own. Prosecutors in Manitowoc County are drawing a line between what Vang allegedly did to Elijah Vue inside that Two Rivers apartment and what Baur allegedly allowed to happen by putting her three-year-old there in the first place — with a man she had once told police had trafficked her. The text messages suggest collaboration. The deleted photograph suggests awareness. The sixty-second coaching message after the 911 call suggests active participation in the cover-up. But the charges say the state sees Vang and Baur in different lanes.Meanwhile, the pretrial fight continues. Vang lost motions for venue change, outside jurors, and jury sequestration. A hearing on challenged forensic evidence — sand and gravel linking the area where Elijah's remains were found to Vang's home — is pending. Vang was on federal supervised release when Elijah was placed in his care, raising questions about who was monitoring him and why nobody flagged a child in his home. Tony Brueski breaks down the legal landscape with a reporter covering both cases — the charges, the pretrial rulings, the evidence fights, and the systemic question of how this happened under the federal government's watch.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The evidence in the Elijah Vue case tells one story. The two people charged in his death allegedly tried to tell another. Three-year-old Elijah was reported missing from a Two Rivers, Wisconsin apartment in February 2024. His mother's boyfriend Jesse Vang said the boy wandered off during a nap. His mother Katrina Baur, 150 miles away, sent Vang a message within sixty seconds telling him what to say. She deleted it. The relationship between Baur and Vang — a trafficking allegation, a federal drug conviction, a power dynamic Baur described as a “structure” with Elijah's incarcerated father at the top. The week inside the apartment — text messages, deleted photographs, a coordinated system of punishment inflicted on a three-year-old who was still in diapers. The cover-up — a staged Netflix alibi, a suitcase with the child's DNA dropped at a donation center, and coaching messages sent within a minute of the 911 call. The seven-month search — FBI, state investigators, hundreds of community volunteers. When investigators interviewed Katrina Baur about the adults in her son's life, she used a word that stopped them: “structure.” She described Elijah's biological father, Jimmy Vue, as “the alpha” over Jesse Vang. Jimmy Vue was incarcerated at the time. Vang was the man Baur placed her three-year-old with — a convicted felon still on federal supervised release. And Baur had once told police that Vang had trafficked her.The dynamic between these adults is central to understanding how Elijah Vue ended up where he did. In a Two Rivers apartment, subjected to what the criminal complaint describes as standing punishments lasting hours, cold water, forced prayer, and isolation. Vang texted Baur that he would make the boy hate him. She replied: “Don't want him to *hate* YOU. Just fear you.” A photograph recovered from Baur's phone showed Elijah blindfolded with bruises on his face and neck at 3:13 in the morning. She deleted it within the hour.Who held power in this arrangement? What was the hierarchy Baur described, and how did it shape what happened to her son? Every adult connected to this child was either behind bars, had a violent criminal record, or was a documented participant in one. Elijah had no safe landing. For seven months, the city of Two Rivers, Wisconsin searched for a three-year-old boy named Elijah Vue. The FBI came. The Wisconsin Department of Justice came. Hundreds of community volunteers showed up with flashlights and search dogs. They combed through landfills, dove into storm drains and the West Twin River, and searched private property across Manitowoc County. Volunteers even searched the Avery family salvage yard. A $40,000 reward was posted. Elijah's grandmother wept at a press conference and said, “Every day without him feels like a piece of our hearts is missing.”All of that was happening while the two people who allegedly knew the truth — Jesse Vang and Katrina Baur — sat in the Manitowoc County Jail. Vang had called 911 on February 20 and said the boy walked away during a nap. Within sixty seconds, Baur had messaged him telling him what to say. She deleted it. Investigators recovered it. When three-year-old Elijah Vue's remains were found in a wooded area three miles from Jesse Vang's Two Rivers, Wisconsin apartment, investigators noted something about the material found near the remains. Sand and gravel recovered at the site reportedly matched sand and gravel found in buckets near Vang's home. The defense is now challenging that evidence — and a hearing is pending that could determine whether the jury ever hears about it.If the sand and gravel evidence is excluded, it removes a physical link between Vang and the location where Elijah was found. The prosecution still has the suitcase with Elijah's DNA, the surveillance footage, the deleted messages, and the forensic findings of healed fractures on the child's skull and face. But every piece of evidence that connects Vang to that wooded area matters — and losing one changes the shape of the case. This is one piece of a broader pretrial battle that has already gone badly for the defense. A judge denied Vang's change of venue motion, denied outside jurors, denied sequestration. Vang faces life in prison on the lead charge, filed with repeater enhancers. Baur faces a different set of charges — neglect rather than direct harm — and up to sixty years. Both have pleaded not guilty. Federal supervision questions loom over the whole case: Vang was on supervised release through 2025 when Elijah was placed in his care. It belonged to Elijah Vue.That suitcase is one piece of a case built on evidence Vang and Katrina Baur — Elijah's mother — allegedly tried to destroy. Deleted photographs. Erased Facebook messages. A story about a sleeping toddler who wandered away that collapsed the moment investigators pulled the surveillance footage. Baur had sent her three-year-old to stay with Vang, her boyfriend, for what she described as “disciplinary reasons.” She wanted him to teach Elijah “how to be a man.” Vang called it “boot camp.” What the criminal complaint describes is a week of forced standing, cold water, isolation, and escalating cruelty — documented in their own texts and photographs. Baur's phone held a deleted image of Elijah blindfolded with bruising on his face, taken at 3:13 in the morning. She erased it an hour after she took it.For seven months after Elijah was reported missing, the Two Rivers community searched. Landfills, rivers, forests, private property. A hunter found skeletal remains in a wooded area three miles from Vang's apartment. DNA confirmed they were Elijah's. Doctors found healed fractures on his skull and face and concluded he had suffered prolonged harm. His manner of death: homicide by unspecified means. Vang faces a life sentence on the lead charge. Baur faces up to sixty years. Both have pleaded not guilty — and both are heading toward trial in Manitowoc County, where a judge has denied every defense motion to move the case or sequester the jury.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Jesse Vang had a felony conviction for harming a child when he was seventeen. He'd been charged with conspiracy to commit human trafficking — with the alleged victim being the same woman who later placed her three-year-old son in his care. He had a federal drug conviction. He was still on supervised release when Katrina Baur drove her son Elijah Vue two and a half hours across Wisconsin and left him in Vang's apartment for what she called “disciplinary reasons.” She told investigators she wanted Vang to teach Elijah “how to be a man.” The child was three years old.According to the criminal complaint, Vang described the arrangement as “boot camp.” He forced Elijah to stand for up to three hours at a time as punishment. He subjected the boy to cold water. He took away the child's only toy. He changed his diaper once a day. Their text messages show two adults coordinating what was happening to this child — and Baur's deleted photograph, recovered by investigators, showed Elijah blindfolded with bruising on his face and neck at 3:13 in the morning. She erased it within the hour. Eight days after Baur dropped Elijah off, Vang reported him missing. He told police the boy walked away while he slept. Within one minute, Baur messaged Vang telling him what to say. She deleted that message too. Investigators found it anyway. The community searched for seven months. Elijah's remains were found in a wooded area three miles from the apartment — discovered by a hunter on private property. Doctors found healed fractures on his skull and face. His death was ruled a homicide. Vang now faces life in prison. Baur faces up to sixty years. Both have pleaded not guilty. The evidence in this case raises a question that goes beyond the courtroom: how does a three-year-old end up in the hands of someone like Jesse Vang — and who is supposed to stop it?Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? We are proud to present a very special episode of In This Family as a bonus for Depresh Mode with John Moe listeners. In This Family is produced by John Moe in conjunction with Nexus Family Healing and it's about the connection between family and mental health. It's a fascinating and moving look at the Hmong culture, their relocation to the United States, and the generational trauma that has been activated by recent events involving ICE. It's a story you haven't heard told by a member of community you might not have heard much about. Newspaper columnist and community business leader Ka Vang was born on a CIA base in Thailand 50 years ago. She remembers eating from the garbage when there was no food to be had, witnessing rape and murder, and fleeing with her family to the United States after the Vietnam War and the Secret War. Ka is Hmong-American, part of a large community of people who aided the American effort and were relocated, largely to Minnesota. The trauma of the war and displacement had severe mental health effects on Ka's family, including depression, anxiety, and hyper-vigilance. Today, the Twin Cities region is seeing tremendous upheaval due to the ICE surge, which has seen thousands of people arrested, sent to detention facilities, and deported, even people who have a legal right to be in the United States. Ka says Hmong people who lived through the war in Asia are terrified and having flashbacks. Their children, having had trauma handed down, are rehearsing best practices for staying safe. And as for Ka, she doesn't feel like an American amid the ICE presence and feels more a matter of when rather than if she'll get taken.

What can animals teach us about ourselves? That’s part of what poets Reginald Dwayne Betts and Mai Der Vang are both exploring in their new collections. “Doggerel” is Bett’s collection about the relationship between dogs and their humans. “Primordial” by Der Vang tells of a nearly extinct deer-like creature that lives in the jungles of Laos. They spoke to OPB’s Jenn Chavez at the 2025 Portland Book Festival.
