I sat down live in Napa Valley with Shannon Rowbury and Jessica Dorrington, co-authors of the new book Strong as a Mother. We recorded this conversation at the Napa Valley Marathon expo, and it centers on what it looks like to return to running after pregnancy, rebuild after injury, and support athletes through every stage of motherhood and performance. Shannon is a three-time Olympian and Olympic bronze medalist in the 1500 meters. Her medal came years after the 2012 Olympic final, when multiple athletes ahead of her were later disqualified for doping. In this conversation, she reflects on that experience and the complicated reality of receiving an Olympic medal long after the race is over. Jessica Dorrington is a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist and pelvic health physical therapist who works with many elite runners. She shares practical, grounded insight on postpartum recovery, pelvic health, and how athletes can safely return to running after pregnancy or injury. Together, Shannon and Jess talk about the inspiration behind Strong as a Mother, why better education around postpartum recovery is so needed in sport, and how runners can approach their comeback with patience, perspective, and the right support. We also talk about Shannon's career, the emotional complexity of elite competition, and the importance of understanding the body through every phase of life. This episode is part of my weekend at the Napa Valley Marathon, where I had the chance to serve as race emcee and host conversations with athletes and leaders in the running community. Topics covered: Longevity in running and what helps you keep running for decades Why consistency matters more than any one perfect week of training Recovery as a key part of performance How training needs change as you age Strength training, calf strength, plyometrics, and core work for runners Injury setbacks and using them as opportunities to learn more about your body Shannon Rowbury's femoral neck stress fracture in college and comeback to make her first Olympic team The role of biomechanics, leg length differences, orthotics, and maintenance work in staying healthy Postpartum return to running and why timelines are highly individual What happens to the abdominal wall and pelvic floor during pregnancy and postpartum Why more women are returning to elite running after having babies The lack of pregnancy and postpartum resources for athletes and why Strong as a Mother was written Pelvic floor health for runners and why it matters for both women and men Shannon Rowbury's delayed Olympic bronze medal from the 2012 1500m Doping in sport and the emotional impact of delayed justice The importance of clean sport, reform, and fighting for integrity in athletics Mental preparation for racing, including visualization, positive cue words, breathing, and smiling Race-day strategies for handling hills, fueling, and staying mentally engaged late in the race Why menstruation is an important indicator of athlete health Low energy availability, RED-S, sleep, and early warning signs for high school and young female runners Sign up for the Marathon Project! Megan Sailor joins the show fresh off a huge breakthrough at CIM, where she placed third in the national championship marathon and ran 2:25:17 in her debut. Megan runs for the B.A.A. High Performance Team and she walks through what it looked like to finally step up to the marathon after spending years focused on the track and shorter road races. Megan shares how pro running was not always the plan, why she considers herself more of a realist than a dreamer, and how the marathon move came at the right time after a stretch where training fitness was not translating to race results. We talk about learning to stop racing workouts, what changed when she began moving up in distance, and how a strong half marathon helped confirm she was heading the right direction. We also get into life outside racing, including the unique dynamic of being a twin and having a built-in training partner, the fact that Megan and her husband live with her twin sister and her husband in Boston, and what they actually do to unwind when they are not training. Megan wraps with a message that sticks: you do not always get to choose the timing or even the event, but patience and trust can lead to the breakthrough you were hoping for. Enjoy this episode with Megan! Topics Discussed: Megan's 2:25:17 marathon debut and 3rd at CIM (national championship) Joining and training with the B.A.A. High Performance Team Why the track was not clicking, and the shift away from racing workouts Building from half marathon success to marathon readiness Marathon training changes: mileage bump, longer workout volume, solo long runs CIM race strategy, pack decisions, and the late-race leg shutdown Fueling and bottle-grab chaos, plus her gel preferences Boston Marathon build: hills, strength on tired legs, and racing a stacked field Twin sister training dynamic, competitiveness, and support Boston winter stories and “space savers” street parking culture Life outside running: TV binges, baking, books, and future goals (dogs, international racing) Closing takeaway: patience, timing, and letting the right event find you Media Mentioned: Books Throne of Glass (series) Shield of Sparrows Harry Potter (series) Divergent (series) The Hunger Games (series) Twilight (series) ACOTAR TV shows Survivor Grey's Anatomy Schitt's Creek Love Is Blind Sponsors: Lagoon Sleep — If you're ready to upgrade your sleep, Lagoon pillows are truly a game changer. After the usual life updates, they dig into the new 800m, indoor world record, set by Keely Hodgkinson from Great Britain. She faced some injuries last summer which meant only a bronze medal at the World Champs in Tokyo. Now, she is healthy, already blazing the indoor oval, and her splits indicate that there might be even more in the tank. Des and Kara break it all down. Then, they introduce you to the 6th fastest US marathoner ever, who no one had ever heard of him until this past weekend. Meet Ethan Shuley, a 27-year-old American from Kentucky who lives and trains in Tokyo. He just threw down a 2:07 in Japan with no sponsor after steady gains over the last 18 months. Who is Ethan? We then skip lightly over its first sequel and focus on its under-rated third entry, The Creature Walks Among Us (1956). Fair warning: we go into the plots of both films in some detail, including the endings, but these films are over 70 years old and the storylines don't have much in the way of twists in any case, so we won't be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for either of them. In 1996, Square released Bahamut Lagoon at a moment when the studio was split between mastery of the 16 bit era and uncertainty about the future. In this episode, we explore how a younger team inside Square was given room to experiment on hardware the company fully understood, creating a strategy role playing game that did not behave like one. We trace how the idea of dragons that could not be fully controlled shaped every system in the game, from unpredictable battles to long term character growth. Our conversation follows the people behind the project, the timing that kept it in Japan, and how fan translations later revealed it as a missing chapter in Square's history. Join us as we study the battlefield, trust our dragons, and revisit Bahamut Lagoon on today's trip down Memory Card Lane.Read transcript

In this conversation, Roisin talks about racing at New Balance Indoor Grand Prix (she ran and won the 800m), at Boston University (she ran 1:57.97, becoming the first American woman to break 1:58 indoors, and breaking the American record in the event), and at the Millrose Games (she won the 600m). She also talks about her struggles with mental health during her time at Stanford, and about the tools that helped her through the hardest days. Plus, a peek at what's next. (First: midterms!) In Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos, authorities have demolished Makoko - the country's biggest informal waterfront settlement. The Lagos state government says some structures built beneath high-tension power lines pose a serious safety risk. But the scale of demolitions has left thousands of residents displaced and families say they were given little warning and no clear relocation plan. And in Sierra Leone, President Julius Maada Bio has announced January 18th as Remembrance Day for victims of the civil war. Between 1991 and 2002 the west African country's military alongside UN peacekeeping troops fought against rebel groups, resulting in the killing of thousands of people and displacement of more than half of Sierra Leone's population at the time.Presenter: Nkechi Ogbonna Producers: Bella Twine, Keikantse Shumba, Chiamaka Dike and Ayuba Iliya Technical Producer: David Nzau Senior Producer: Charles Gitonga Editors: Samuel Murunga and Maryam Abdalla

di pioggia cadevano dolcemente attorno a loro.En: The winter air was crisp, and small raindrops gently fell around them. It: Le maschere colorate si affacciavano dalle vetrine dei negozi, promesse silenziose del prossimo Carnevale.En: Colorful masks peeked from store windows, silent promises of the upcoming Carnevale. It: "Luca, guarda!En: "Luca, look! It: È qui che papà ci portava a prendere il gelato," disse Martina con un sorriso nostalgico.En: This is where dad used to take us to get ice cream," said Martina with a nostalgic smile. It: I suoi occhi brillavano mentre indicava un piccolo caffè accanto alla piazza.En: Her eyes shone as she pointed to a small café next to the square. It: "Ricordo," rispose Luca, il tono calmo, quasi distaccato.En: "I remember," replied Luca, his tone calm, almost detached. It: "Papà adorava quel gelato al pistacchio."En: "Dad loved that pistachio ice cream."It: Giulia, la loro madre, camminava un passo dietro di loro, osservando i figli con occhi pieni di amore e comprensione.En: Giulia, their mother, walked a step behind them, watching her children with eyes full of love and understanding. It: Per un momento, il dolore della perdita sembrava sentiva il peso della responsabilità.En: Holding the paper in his hands, he felt the weight of responsibility. It: Tuttavia, vedendo Martina così immersa nei ricordi, decise di mettere da parte i documenti.En: However, seeing Martina so immersed in memories, he decided to set the documents aside. It: "Martina, facciamo come facevamo una volta: esploriamo la città," propose, cercando di allentare la tensione tra loro.En: "Martina, let's do as we used to: explore the city," he proposed, trying to ease the tension between them. It: Martina annuì, riconoscente per il gesto del fratello.En: Martina nodded, grateful for her brother's gesture. It: "Mi piacerebbe."En: "I would like that."It: Dopo aver vagato per le strette calli, la famiglia trovò un gondoliere disponibile.En: After wandering through the narrow calli, the family found an available gondolier. It: Saliti sulla gondola, la maestosa serenità della Laguna di Venezia li avvolse.En: Once on the gondola, the majestic serenity of the Lagoon of Venice enveloped them. It: L'acqua tranquilla rifletteva il cielo grigio, mentre il gondoliere navigava silenziosamente tra i canali.En: The calm water reflected the gray sky as the gondolier silently navigated through the canals. It: "Davvero mi manca," Martina confessò all'improvviso, la voce tremante.En: "I really miss him," Martina suddenly confessed, her voice trembling. It: Luca, per una volta, depose la facciata riservata.En: Luca, for once, dropped his reserved facade. It: "Anche a me, sorella," ammise, permettendosi di mostrare il dolore che aveva trattenuto.En: "Me too, sister," he admitted, allowing himself to show the sorrow he had been holding back. It: Giulia ascoltava in silenzio, lasciando che i suoi figli condividessero il peso che avevano portato in modi così diversi.En: Giulia listened in silence, letting her children share the burden they carried in such different ways. It: "Vostro padre sarebbe così fiero di voi," disse infine, cercando di offrire conforto.En: "Your father would be so proud of you," she finally said, trying to offer comfort. It: Dopo la gondola, si ritrovarono seduti in un piccolo caffè tranquillo.En: After the gondola ride, they found themselves seated in a small, quiet café.It: L'atmosfera era accogliente, e il profumo del caffè riempiva l'aria.En: The atmosphere was cozy, and the aroma of coffee filled the air.It: Giulia aprì una piccola scatola di legno che aveva portato con sé.En: Giulia opened a small wooden box she had brought with her.It: Dentro, c'erano due piccoli ciondoli.En: Inside were two small pendants. It: "Questi sono per voi," disse dolcemente.En: "These are for you," she said softly. It: "Suo modo di dirvi che vi sarà sempre vicino."En: "His way of telling you he will always be close."It: Luca prese il suo e lo strinse forte, sentendo per la prima volta un sollievo.En: Luca took his and held it tightly, feeling relief for the first time. It: Martina, guardando il ciondolo, lasciò scendere una lacrima, ma con un sorriso dolce.En: Martina, looking at the pendant, let a tear fall, but with a sweet smile. It: "Sai," disse Luca a Martina, "forse il migliore ricordo è proprio qui, ora."En: "You know," Luca said to Martina, "perhaps the best memory is right here, right now."It: Martina annuì, trovando un nuovo senso di pace.En: Martina nodded, finding a new sense of peace. It: I tre, seduti insieme, sentirono che il legame familiare era più forte che mai, mentre il tempo scorreva dolcemente in una Venezia che continuava la sua vita, testimone di momenti We had a simple plan, get a little lifted, fire up Gran Turismo, and pretend we're professional drivers with absolutely zero professional consequences. Right out the gate I'm rocking the Bomb Magloud with some “cheetah piss,” and we immediately get into that classic pre-race chaos where the lobby fills up, names pop in, and you realize you're about to share a track with complete strangers who either drive like surgeons or like they're playing bumper cars at Lagoon. There's also a quick shoutout to JD Lauridsen, We start at Nurburgring because we like suffering. The corners are ridiculous, you can't see into half of them, and the track punishes every ounce of ego you brought with you. Then the real racing talk kicks in, fuel strategy, gas maps, and the depressing realization that one lap can eat a stupid amount of gas if you're not paying attention.Naturally, the conversation swerves into real-life car fantasies. I talk about almost driving a Ferrari 458 in Italy, then I see the price, $350 for 15 minutes in a town where you can't even go over 30 mph. Hard pass. That turns into the Utah legend of the guy who won a Lamborghini from Maverick, took it up the canyon, and totaled it. Power is fun until physics clocks you in the jaw. Then we hit a surprisingly wholesome moment. I share a Christmas dinner story where grandma is openly talking about gummies helping her sleep, feel calmer, and just handle life better after losing her husband. That's the kind of cannabis story that sneaks up on you, not hype, just relief.Back to the race, we're dialing in wheel settings like stoned pit crew engineers, and the game literally warns that force feedback can cause shocks. Nothing says “relaxing evening” like your steering wheel threatening violence. And then the rain shows up. Slipstream battles get spicy, “dirty air” becomes the enemy, and Jesse starts giving me “sweet kisses from behind,” which immediately turns into, “do I pay extra, how does this work?” It's competitive, it's messy, it's hilarious, and somehow we keep it together long enough to feel like we actually learned something. If you want an episode that feels like hanging with your friends while they talk trash, overshare, and accidentally land on a real human moment in the middle of the chaos, this is that one.Save on Dr Dabber with Code: Cannabisschool10Save on Storz & Bickel with Code : CannabisschoolSave on Santa Cruz Shredder with Code: CSP10Save on Bomb Erigs with Code: CSPScore 100 on your test

Today on the show, Sinclaire Johnson is back, and she just had herself a day at the Merrie Mile in Honolulu. She won the race, ran a 4:21 road mile, and set a new American record. This is not new territory for her either. She has set American records before, made the World Champs team this past year, and after a few tough years battling major bone injuries, she's finally feeling strong, healthy, and ready to keep building. We talk about racing a road mile without clocks or splits, being coached by her fiance Craig, what she learned from finishing fourth at the Olympic Trials in 3:56, how cross training has helped keep her healthy, and what she is targeting in 2026 with a full indoor season and an outdoor year that looks a little different. Episode 659: Wrapping Up the Wellness Series with Brad Stulberg on Excellence, Care, and Meaningful Goals

We're closing out our 10-part Wellness Series with a conversation that couldn't feel more fitting. Today's guest is my friend Brad Stulberg, who returns to the podcast to talk about his new book, The Way of Excellence: A Guide to True Greatness and Deep Satisfaction in a Chaotic World. I read this book over the past couple of months and finished it on the plane heading to a busy week of interviews at the running event, and I genuinely felt more grounded and prepared because of it. Brad has been on the show many times, and I always leave our conversations with tangible takeaways for how to live and lead better. He's the author of The Practice of Groundedness, Master of Change, Peak Performance, and The Passion Paradox, and he brings such a thoughtful, practical lens to ambition, growth, and fulfillment. In this episode, we talk about caring deeply, the inevitability of failure, and why caring, even when it opens us up to heartbreak, is still worth it. We also touch on goal setting as we head into a new year and how to think about excellence in a way that's sustainable and meaningful. I hope you love this conversation as much as I did and that it leaves you feeling encouraged as we wrap up this series. Check out Brad’s work and pre order his newest book at BradStulberg.com What we talked about: December as a natural season for reflection, and the tension of “ramping down” while launching something big The Way of Excellence and how excellence can be a mindset you practice, not just an outcome you achieve “Brave New World” as a fear-to-curiosity reframe for big moments (races, interviews, parenting, hard lifts) Curiosity vs fear, and why curiosity helps you perform better (and feel better) under pressure Caring deeply as the cost of stepping into the arena, and why “too cool to care” is actually insecurity Excellence as heartfelt (not robotic) and a critique of “pseudo excellence” culture and optimization obsession Cold plunges and “hacks”: what's legit, what's hype, and when hard things are useful vs unnecessary Identity and the “house with rooms” metaphor (runner, parent, creative, partner) so one setback doesn't collapse your whole sense of self Reading vs short-form video for attention, cognition, and emotional health, plus habits that support focus New Year goals: why resolutions fail, and how values-based goal setting helps you climb the right mountain Sponsors: Eternal This entire Wellness Series has been made possible by Eternal, a science-backed preventative health company for people who take their health and training seriously.
