What happens when you pit the neon-soaked, high-energy pop of the mid-80s against the smooth R&B and heavy hip-hop beats of the mid-90s? In this episode, Dave and Rob go head-to-head in the ultimate musical time-travel debate: 1985 vs. 1995. By pulling up the data and looking at the official top 5 year-end hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 for each year, the guys break down how a single decade completely transformed the landscape of popular music. We're matching up the smooth saxophone of Wham!'s "Careless Whisper" and Madonna's untouchable "Like a Virgin" against the genre-defining power of Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" and TLC's legendary double-feature of "Waterfalls" and "Creep." Dave and Rob unpack the cultural impact, the production styles, and how these tracks have aged over the years. From the TLC classic "Waterfalls" to the Green Day anthem "Good Riddance," we explored the real stories behind some of our favorite songs.Lucas's story is one for the books. As a background actor, he landed a spot in the wedding scene of Euphoria, sitting right behind Zendaya and Jacob Elordi. We talked to him about his experience and what it was like to be a part of such a popular show. But that's not all - we also had a great conversation about the importance of networking and following your passion in the entertainment industry. We also had a fun segment where we discussed some popular songs that have double meanings. From "Waterfalls" to "Good Riddance," we explored the real stories behind some of our favorite songs. It turns out that some of these songs are not what we thought they were about, and it's a great reminder to really listen to the lyrics. If you want to hear more of Lucas's story and learn about the surprising meanings behind some of your favorite songs, tune in to this episode of the show. CORRECTION: The Loyalsock Trail and the Old Loggers Path is maintained by the Alpine Club of Williamsport. When people find out that I've visited every state park, I often get asked the same question. What's my favorite? And consistently I give the same answer, Worlds End State Park. It's an easy answer for me since I fell in love with the park the first time I walked into the s-shaped gorge to see it surrounded by tree-covered mountains and boulders. But when it comes to state forests, I haven't always had an answer. And that's because I just haven't spent enough time in them to give an educated answer. That was until 2024. In September of that year, I went on a Slack Pack with the Keystone Trails Association. Slack Packs allow you to get dropped off and picked up at the trial every day while leaving the majority of your gear and meals back at the campsite. Hence, having a slack pack.Over the course of few days, we hiked about 20 miles on the Loyalsock Trail through Loyalsock State Forest. The state forest – which surrounds Worlds End – provided me with everything I wanted. Mountains. Views. Waterfalls. Big beautiful tress. It was the most time I'd ever spent in a Pennsylvania state forest. And, still, the best time. I contend that if you can't find something unique or special or breathtaking over Loyalsock State Forest's nearly 115,000 acres, then buddy, you ain't trying. Loyalsock simply has it all. And all of it is splendid. From the cool rushing waters of Loyalsock Creek, to the beautiful nightsky at High Knob Astronomy Area, there is a lot to take in on the forest. And since it covers three counties in northcentral Pennsylvania, you will have plenty of opportunities to explore new places and find new things to fall in love with. On this episode, I speak with Eric Probert to the podcast. Scaling UP! H2O
481 From Waterfalls to SOPs: Building Better Utilities with Kalpna Solanki

Scaling UP! H2O

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2026 68:11

Water utility work depends on more than technical knowledge. It depends on clear procedures, current documents, practical training, and performance conversations that reflect what operators actually do in the field.  In Episode 481, Trace Blackmore, CWT, welcomes back Kalpna Solanki, President and CEO at GAMECHANGERS Inc., for a practical conversation on building stronger utilities through standard operating procedures, competencies, and performance evaluations. Kalpna shares how outdated SOPs, disconnected training tools, and top-down documentation can create risk, confusion, and missed learning opportunities.    SOPs That Match the Work  Kalpna defines an SOP as a documented process that provides clear instructions for specific tasks or activities. Her current work with water utilities includes procedures for water main installation, flushing, customer complaints, meter installation, meter readings, and other distribution team responsibilities.  The key issue is not whether an organization has SOPs. Many do. The bigger question is whether those documents still match the field reality. Kalpna describes reviewing SOPs that reference retired staff, outdated contact information, and procedures written by people who may no longer be close to the work.  Her approach starts with the operators. The people doing the work help revise the documents, confirm what is accurate, and identify what needs to change. Revision dates, organized SOP libraries, and clear naming structures help teams avoid using the wrong version.    From Procedures to Competencies  Kalpna explains that SOPs should not sit alone in a file system. They should inform competency frameworks that define the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors needed for the job.  For example, an SOP may explain how to perform a fire hydrant teardown. A related competency tool can help confirm whether an operator knows how to do that work safely and correctly. The results can then guide mentoring, training, and performance evaluation.  This turns performance evaluation into a two-way process. Rather than simply telling employees what they did or did not do, supervisors can use competency checklists to identify gaps, determine needed resources, and support development.    Field Access, Video, and Ownership  Kalpna also shares how the Capital Regional District project extends SOPs beyond written documents. Once an SOP is revised and approved, her team creates a field video using operators as the subjects. The video is tied back to the written SOP, giving employees the option to read, watch, or use both formats depending on how they learn best.  QR codes make the system even more useful. Operators can scan a code in the field and access the relevant SOP or video without leaving the work location, searching a large document library, or relying on memory.  That access matters. As Kalpna puts it, when processes are too complicated, people are more likely to wing it. In water utility work, that can affect safety, consistency, compliance, and service quality.    Water Stories and Water Reuse  Kalpna also shares her personal water story, from growing up near the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls to living near the Thames River in London and later near protected watersheds in Vancouver. Her experiences shape how she thinks about water availability, source protection, and the responsibility of the industry.  The conversation closes with a look at the Vancouver Convention Centre West, where a full-scale wastewater treatment facility operates beneath the building. Treated effluent is reused for toilet flushing and rooftop garden irrigation, reducing freshwater demand and municipal sewer load.  For Kalpna, this points to a larger shift in language and mindset. Wastewater is not simply waste. It is a resource with future value for reuse, reclamation, and water-stressed industries.  Listen to the full conversation above. Explore related episodes below. Shawna is back from West Virginia after joining her mom's senior citizen bus tour, and let's just say she's learned one very important lesson: tours are definitely not for her. From accessibility challenges and a train ride that mostly featured endless trees to getting sick from the food (again), the trip provided plenty of stories and laughs.Shawna also shares why she wishes she had packed Lauren's PuroAir air purifier for the train ride after dealing with all the soot and smoke along the way.Plus, Shawna sits down with rising country artist and former The Voice contestant Makenzie Phipps, who competed on Snoop Dogg's team. They discuss her experience on the show, her music career, and what's next.Hosted by Shawna and LaLa, Life Beyond The Mic brings real conversations that go beyond the mic, lights, cameras, and stage.  Follow the show so you never miss an episode, and if this resonated with you, share it with someone who needs to hear it.  We feature real conversations, product experiences, and brands we genuinely love.  For interviews, product features, and media opportunities, visit www.shawnaandlala.com.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I took small snippets of the Imlil waterfall in Atlas Mountains recording to make digital noise and then composed a digital waterfall around them as they fire off at random. Waterfalls are natural wonders and they are beautiful to witness. They make an incredible noise which out of context (without the wonderful visual) can feel rather unnatural and undesirable. We are heading to - if not already in - very digital times. I wanted to create a digital cascade that surrounds and almost traps the listener. The only way out is to follow the melody of the guitar."Waterfall in Imlil, Morocco reimagined by Wanted Sound.

Jake lives in Michigan's western U.P. and has spent years exploring, documenting, and photographing waterfalls across the region. We talk about what makes spring such an exciting season for waterfalls, how snowmelt and rainfall affect flow, what to expect with road access and trail conditions, and how to think about timing your trip for the best experience. We also get into the photography side of things: what Jake looks for when he photographs a waterfall, how geology shapes the look and personality of waterfalls in the Upper Peninsula, and why places like the Black River, Presque Isle River, Bond Falls, and the Porcupine Mountains continue to inspire photographers and adventurers alike. Along the way, Jake shares practical safety advice for spring waterfall trips, tips for scouting in changing conditions, and insight from his new book, The Lost and Forgotten Waterfalls of Michigan's Western Upper Peninsula. If you are planning a spring trip to the U.P., love waterfall photography, or want to better understand the landscapes that shape the Great Lakes region, this is a fun and useful conversation. This week’s guest is Martina Castro, creator of podcast Two Faced: John of God, Exactly Right’s new podcast series about John of God, the Brazilian self-proclaimed healer and “psychic surgeon.” In part one, Martina explains John of God’s history and mythology, how he became internationally famous for his alleged healings (amplified by celebrities like Oprah), and the carefully primed environment he created called “the Casa.” Everyone dressed in white! Crystals! Waterfalls! And of course, lines of pilgrims watching him channel “doctor spirits” to supposedly heal the town's many visitors. They discuss how his “free healings” weren’t as free as promised, his so-called “invisible surgeries” that supposedly worked from across the globe, and the in-person healings he did that involved putting objects up uncomfortably far up people’s nasal cavities. And next week, we’ll get into the explosive allegations that came out during the #MeToo movement. Hemlocks to Hellbenders
Trough Creek State Park – Where rugged cliffs, creeks and waterfalls shape a wild landscape

When I was on my journey of running one mile in all-then 121 Pennsylvania state parks in 2021, I took notes after every run. It was an effort to make sure I would remember my experiences. I'd take notes like, I spotted a fox here. Or I fell there. Or I want to hike the full trail here. But one of the most important pieces of information I recorded was my overall feeling of the park. It's difficult to get a sense of a natural landscape in just one mile, often running half a mile one way and then running half a mile back the same way. But some places just stand out and beg to be explored some more. Here's what I wrote about Trough Creek State Park on March 13, 2021. “Well, this place is incredible. I have to come back.” It only takes a few seconds at Trough Creek to realize it's special. And that it deserves more time to be explored. You even get that sense by just driving through the park. Traveling through the scenic gorge along the Great Trough Creek you see signs for Balanced Rock, Rainbow Falls, Ice Mine, Copperas Rocks, Paradise Furnace Cemetery and the suspension bridge.Your mind can't help but get excited by the idea of what the heck all these things are and how you can go see them. For outdoors people it feels like entering a theme park. What ride do I go on first? And with so many of these wonderful features, you'd expect it to be huge. Some place you'd need a week to explore. But that isn't the case. At less than 600 acres with only 12 miles of hiking trails, you can see most if not all of it in a weekend. But this isn't a one and done sort of park. Once you visit Trough Creek, it sinks its hooks into you. Its trails, its views, it's features beckon you for many more visits. Despite the fact that Trough Creek is more than two hours from me, I've been there multiple times while passing other great state parks along the way. It is just that damn cool. And no matter how many times I've been there, I want to keep going back. And that's about the biggest complement I can give to a state park. On this episode, I speak with Michael Garbinsky. Michael is the environmental education specialist at Trough Creek State Park. Be sure to support our 2025 sponsors:Keystone Trails AssociationPurple Lizard MapsPennsylvania Parks and Forests FoundationSisters' SunflowersDiscover Clarion CountyGo Laurel Highlands Support the showSupport the showVisit our website to learn more about the podcast, to purchase merch and to find out about our incredible sponsors. Most investors stop reading after the "8% Pref," assuming their incentives are aligned. But the Preferred Return is just one piece of a larger system. In this episode of Mechanics of Money, Sam Silverman breaks down the single most important component of any private deal: The Distribution Waterfall. We move beyond the headline numbers to the "plumbing" of the deal, explaining how the Catch-Up Provision can funnel 100% of cash flow to the sponsor during critical periods. Sam runs a side-by-side math comparison showing how two deals with identical returns can result in a $48,000 difference in your pocket based solely on structure. We also explore the reality of Clawbacks, explaining why these protective provisions are often impossible to enforce and what you should ask for instead. In this episode, we cover:The Skeleton: Understanding the standard flow: Pref → Capital Back → Catch-Up → Split.Asset Nuance: How waterfalls differ between Real Estate (current pay) and Private Equity (exit heavy). The Catch-Up Trap: The math behind Full Catch-Ups vs. 50% Catch-Ups and why it matters.Clawback Reality: Why "Net of Taxes" clauses can render your protection useless. The Checklist: 5 questions to determine if a sponsor is truly aligned with your capital.Links & Resources:Newsletter: Join the Mechanics of Money weekly deep dive: https://www.mechanicsofmoney.coInvest: Invest with Silverman Capital: https://silvermancapital.coAbout the Host: Sam Silverman is the Founder of Silverman Capital, a private equity and real estate investment firm. Monique Tepe left her first husband after just seven months of marriage. She moved back to Ohio. She rebuilt her life. She married a dentist named Spencer, had two children, and said in her wedding vows: "I had quite a journey to get to you. Countless bad Bumble dates, wrong relationships, and waterfalls of tears."Eight years later, according to police, that first husband — Dr. Michael McKee, a vascular surgeon — allegedly drove from Illinois to Columbus and shot both Monique and Spencer dead in their home at 3:52 in the morning. Their children, ages 4 and 1, were found alive in the house. The family wasn't shocked. They told reporters they'd suspected McKee all along. Spencer's brother-in-law called McKee "emotionally abusive." Sources say Monique's parents helped her escape Virginia where she'd been living with him.New court records reveal activity on their 2017 divorce case in June 2025 — six months before the murders. What brought them back to court after eight years of silence? We don't know yet. But investigators and experts are building a profile of a man who never let go.McKee maintains his innocence and will plead not guilty. He faces two counts of aggravated murder — death penalty eligible in Ohio. This is the full breakdown: the relationship, the divorce, the eight-year gap that wasn't really a gap, and the night everything ended.#HiddenKillers #TeepeMurders #MichaelMcKee #SpencerTepe #MoniqueTepe #TrueCrimePodcast #ColumbusOhio #DomesticAbuse #GrievanceCollector #DeathPenaltyJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISDOES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
