Sabbath March 7, 2020 Pastor Don Lee 1 Samuel 1:1 Narrative: Hearing God's Voice Why do we come to Church? To praise God with fellow believers; to worship him. Important, God wants to hear from us, but ultimately we come to church to hear a word from the Lord, to hear God's voice. Had thought to use the story of Samuel to discuss how we hear God's voice, but Samuel himself may not be the very best example for us. His experience “speak for thy servant heareth” isn't all that common. Does happen + It is something people crave and other fear Martin Luther---Parishioners “If God was speaking we'd run to hear him, we'd be there” “He is in the preaching of his word” 1Thes 1:4,5 For we know, brothers and sisters[a] loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. 1 Thes 2:13 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. power is in the word not the messenger 1 Peter 4:10-11 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. Not just an apostolic prerogative or privilege, not just the preacher Text like these led the Swiss reformers to say in what now called the 2nd Helvetic confession (1564) Our text Big changes coming pivotal point in Israel's history End of Judges- Everyman did what was right in his own eyes Ramah—High place “watch tower” Hill country idol worship Next to Gibeah—Levite concubine cut up 2 wives Hannah barren- not just physical problem, spiritual too. Deut 7:14 You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your livestock be without young. (SS God can bring life out of death) Hears God's voice- no longer sad.
“Christian life is not a life divided between times for action and times for contemplation. No. Real social action is a way of contemplation, and real contemplation is the core of social action.” Henri Nouwen Continuing our series on Action & Contemplation, Phileena Heuertz talks about contemplation. How do contemplation and action work together? Why are practices of reflection and contemplative prayer essential to meaningful impact in the world? Phileena Heuertz spent 20 years working as an activist in some of the worlds toughest places. And then she had a crisis of faith. "I really needed a practice that could hold me. Before, it was me holding my faith. But I needed my faith to hold me. I needed to let go. I needed to be held by God." Today, Phileena is a spiritual director and teacher of contemplative prayer. She helps other activists and ministry leaders deepen their relationships with God, discern their unconscious motivations for service and cultivate practices of stillness, silence and solitude. “Solitude teaches us to be present. Silence teaches us to listen. Stillness teaches us what appropriate engagement looks like.” - Phileena Heuertz Phileena’s new book Mindful Silence examines these three contemplative themes. She asks how we can offer a different kind of presence in the world that activates redemptive impact? Phileena Heuertz is the author of Pilgrimage of the Soul and her new book Mindful Silence: The Heart of Christian Contemplation. She is a spiritual director and founding partner of Gravity, a center for contemplative activism in Omaha Nebraska where she lives with her husband Chris. "There are unconscious motivations that drive us into service that may appear to be selfless and altruistic but upon deeper introspective may be self-serving. And it’s that self-serving aspect of activism that perpetuates exploitation of others." - Phileena Heuertz Listen to Part 1 with Kathy Khang. Action or contemplation–which is better? This pitting of one against the other has been a long standing debate throughout history. Theologians have often used allegorical depictions of biblical women to illustrate this divide. Augustine famously used the two wives of Jacob to articulate his preference. He held up Leah as the model of the fruitful activist life. But Rachael was a model of the harder to attain contemplative life. Others set the Biblical sisters Mary against Martha: Mary, who sits as a disciple at the feet of Jesus, is identified with contemplation whilst her sister Martha, who is distracted by her many tasks, represents action. Philosopher Hannah Arendt believed that prior to the Modern Age, contemplation was preferred. But with the technological boom, the Protestant Reformation and the rise of Marxism, action become dominant. Yet, there have always been streams within the contemplative tradition that seek to unite the two for healthy Christian formation. “We need both action and contemplation to have a whole spiritual journey. It doesn’t matter which comes first; action may lead you to contemplation and contemplation may lead you to action.” Fr. Richard Rohr And so, in the next two episodes, I want to elevate two women (without pitting them against one another!) as they illustrate how action and contemplation work together for holistic Christian formation. In today’s episode, activist Kathy Khang talks about action and her latest book Raise your Voice: Why we Stay Silent and How to speak up! Kathy and I talk about why our voices matters, the costs of raising our voices, and the dangers of assimilation. Kathy Khang is a writer, speaker and yoga instructor who has worked in campus ministry for more than twenty years. She is a coauthor of More Than Serving Tea: Asian American Women on Expectations, Relationships, Leadership and Faith. and the author of a new book: Raise Your Voice, which we talk about in this episode. Lead Singer from Canadian Rock band Helix, Brian Vollmer is joining the conversation on Cue To Cue today! Brian is opening up about his artist’s journey and relaying his experience of 40 plus years in the music business! So much to be gained from Brian’s, wisdom, knowledge! Do not miss this one! In this Episode: The importance of strong vocal technique and the key to maintaining vocal health Why he doesn’t recommend taking the route of vocal competition shows like American Idol or The Voice Why he believes the desire to be an artist wins over talent The outlook every artist needs to have in order to have longevity in their career The importance of playing live as a performer A little about Brian: Brian Vollmer began his singing career in the Listowel Choir, a consistent winner each year under at the annual Kiwanas Festival in Toronto under famous London, Ontario conductor Gerry Fagan. After graduating from Listowel High School, he auditioned for and was accepted by The Ontario Youth Choir. Those chosen (50 approx) were from the 500 of the best high school and university students across the province of Ontario. The choir performed classical music plus opening up the famous Hamilton Place, singing an original piece of music by Galt McDermott, the same person who had written HAIR. Also in the show were Salome Baie, Al Nickleson, and Nel Carter. Although his career in music started in the choir, Vollmer’s passion became rock and roll. The next year Vollmer moved to Kitchener, Ontario to work at Schneider’s Meats. It was there where he and 4 other long-haired guys got together in a little practice hall on Margaret Avenue and formed the “Helix Field Band”, which was later shortened to “Helix”. The year was 1974. Over his 40 years plus years as the singer of Helix, Vollmer has toured the world, played with over 200 of the world’s biggest recording acts (everyone from KISS to MOTORHEAD), earned himself 2 platinum & 4 gold albums, a #1 album in the country of Sweden, sold over a million albums, and the list goes on. On his own, Vollmer has released several solo albums, the last being “Get Yer Hands Dirty”, released in 2017. The album was produced by Juno/Grammy-winning Gavin Brown, who also played drums on the album. Vollmer has also released his own videos and been involved in several other projects outside his normal “Helix duties.” For instance, this year he was the voice behind the new video game CONCERT KINGS. He also had a part in voicing the new Trailer Park Boy’s adult cartoon show (he’s a cartwheeling caricature on the show) and a couple of years ago was a judge on the CBC show “Cover Me Canada” where he was a mentor for runner-up Melanie Morgan. In between Helix gigs, Vollmer teaches the old Italian method of singing called, “Bel Canto.” In fact, he is one of the last people in the world to teach it, and his students include Canadian country superstar TIM HICKS (7 Top 10 country singles) Mercedes & Morgan Lander from the platinum-selling heavy metal girl band KITTIE, and local London sensation Sarah Smith, who has several albums to her credit, and who tours frequently in the U.S. & Europe.
