In part two of Richard Maude’s return to the podcast, the conversation begins with China. Was Richard “surprised” by Beijing’s promulgation of the Hong Kong National Security Law? Should the Australian government be updating its priors regarding the level of risk China is willing to take, and would such an updating have any policy consequences? What then about Taiwan? A serious Taiwan contingency would not be a surprise—does it pose the greatest challenge for the new strategic objectives outlined by Prime Minister Morrison in his speech launching Australia’s 2020 Defence Strategic Update? And on the topic of technological decoupling, Darren tries to separate the technical dimensions of the policy challenge from the politics. To what extent are Western concerns simply a matter of a lack of trust, given the tight relationship between Chinese companies and the state? Can anything be done to alleviate these concerns, or is the larger structural force of major power rivalry depriving individual governments of any agency to arrest this trend? The structural forces potentially driving the decoupling phenomenon link up with the next major theme—the future of international cooperation. The term “Five Eyes” has been appearing in the media a lot lately in multiple different contexts—what should we make of this trend? Does the future of international cooperation lie through the filter of trusted security partnerships, and isn’t that a problem for truly global problems like climate change? Finally, the conversation concludes with a focus on Australian foreign policy. How well suited are the traditional instruments of Australia’s power and influence to the present moment? Does our path forward involve simply being the best version of ourselves, or is genuinely creative thinking needed to reform Australian diplomacy? And would there be merit in having a foreign affairs version of the recent Defence Strategic Update? When a skeleton was unearthed in 2012 from under the tarmac of a car park in Leicester in the English East Midlands, Turi King needed to gather irrefutable evidence to prove that this really was the body of Richard III, England's infamous medieval monarch. Under the microscope was not only the king's genetic identity, but his entire reputation. Was Richard a ruthless villain, as depicted by Shakespeare? Or did the incoming Tudors spread 'fake news' to besmirch his name? As presenter Jim al-Khalili discovers, clues in his skeletal remains have helped to solve some of these mysteries, and reveal the real Richard III. When she was young, Turi King wanted to be the next Indiana Jones. Her love of archaeology led her to study genetics so she could use ancient DNA to solve historic mysteries. She tells Jim how genetic testing, of both the dead skeleton and his living relatives, provided the vital evidence they needed to identify Richard III. But first, she had to extract his DNA, by pulling out one of his teeth. Main Image: Turi King Credit: Jonathan Sisson
Richard III is supposed to have been a conniving and megalomaniacal ruler. Henry Tudor believed he was a usurper, having wrested control of the crown and throne of England from his brother, Edward IV's, line of succession, which he later claimed was actually illegitimate. And he has stood accused of orchestrating the murders of his other elder brother George, Duke of Clarence, several advisors to his late brother King Edward IV, his own wife Anne Neville, and—most famously—his nephews, Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury, the young Princes in the Tower. Was Richard the evil usurping murderer that the Tudors and William Shakespeare himself would have us believe? Or was he, as Richardians insist, a victim of smear campaigns and propaganda at the hands of the victors of England's bloodiest dynastic battle? Richard III: Tyrannical Murderer or Misunderstood King? That's the question we want to discuss in today's episode of The Bicks Do Shakespeare. King Richard III was King of England and Lord of Ireland from 1483 until his defeat and death at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, to the forces of Henry Tudor (who became King Henry VII until his death in 1509). Richard III was the last king of the House of York and also the last of the Plantagenet dynasty. His defeat at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, was the decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses, which ended the Middle Ages and started the Tudor dynasty, which would reign until 1603. King Richard III was a controversial character and historical interpretations of him have not all been favourable. However, his body was discovered in the English City of Leicester in 2012, buried underneath a local authority car park, some 527 years after his defeat at Bosworth, precipitating a renewed interest and fascination in the ‘Car Park King’. In this episode, Rachel Aryton from the King Richard III Visitor Centre in Leicester joins us for an interview on all things King Richard. Was Richard really a terrible King? Did Richard murder his nephews? What caused the Wars of the Roses? Why did the Battle of Bosworth happen? Why did Richard lose? Why should you visit the Richard III Museum in Leicester? Find out the answers to all of these key questions in this Podcast! Please visit www.versushistory.com for terms of use.

In Episode 24, we unpack the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report. Why is it important? What does it tell us about the future? Were the fathers of confederation reeeaaally that racist? (yes) We're also super pleased to welcome third-time guest Hunter Cardinal alongside his brilliant sister Jacqui! We're also still recording over skype and working out some audio kinks so here's a brief FAQ for this episode: Q: Why do the voices go all robot-y sometimes? A: Hunter and Jacqui didn't record with headphones so when they're talking and we interject something you hear it out of their speakers! It's just a few "um"s and "yeah"s. Q: There are people talking sometimes in the background. Was Richard recording in the side room of a party? Was he in a sort-of quiet room talking about the Truth and Reconciliation commission report when there was a literal party happening? A: Yes.
Episode 37 takes us to deep jungle of Mexico to explore “the Ruins” (2008). Wait, doesn’t that look a little bit like Australia? Well, that’s because it is! There are other secrets to this production, like the fact that big rocks aren’t necessarily the best medical instrument for amputating limbs. And that real Mayan temples have solid steps, not the tread and riser type, duh! Additionally, there are some pesky plants imitating cell phones, young people making bad decisions, bad guys making rash decisions, plants causing rashes, faulty rope hoists and a few other things you might find on Gilligan’s Island. Then we talk about the Santo and Blue Demon movies! This is crazier than a bird trying to steal your tacos! What Hillbilly movie wrestled Will to the ground, forcing his submission? How did Richard end up with foofy blended drink fatigue? What did Jolyon watch that had some mad scientist swapping brains around? Was Richard’s imaginary Mayan movie better than this “real” one? The answers are in this episode, which is coming at you like Sean Connery driving a truckload of gravel Check us out on Instagram, where we are @chewingthescenery or easily find us on Facebook. Also, please rate, review and subscribe- it really does help us.
