The words High and Late Middle Ages conjures up images of fog rising up over a field where knights in shining armor are trading blows with double handed swords, mighty bishops overseeing the construction of monumental cathedrals and peasants toiling on the land as serfs. The reason we see it that way goes back to the chivalric literature that celebrated the aristocratic lifestyle where tournaments and poetry mattered more than the humdrum world of business. But let's just take a look back at the High Middle Ages, the time of Richard the Lionheart, Saint Louis and Frederick Barbarossa. Who controlled access to the great endeavor of the time, the conquest of the Holy Land? Who re-opened up the connections to the wider world, from Novgorod to India and China? Who were the most ferocious fighters who neither expected norgranted any quarter? Who had all the money? These were the great cities of Italy, of Flanders, of Picardie and Provence and of the Holy Roman Empire. Verona under the Della Scala in the 14th century generated tax revenues twice as high as those of England, Venice capacity was sixty percent of what France could generate. And these cities fielded armies that, as we know, defeated the Holy Roman Emperors, even the most capable ones like Barbarossa and Frederick II time and time again. Their absolute dedication to fight to the end was evidenced by their extremely heavy and slow war carts, the Carroccios and by the bravery of the Flemish Militia at the Battle of the Golden Spurs. And the first European since Roman times to make to India and China wasn't a Knight errant, but a Venetian merchant, nor were the vast lands on the Eastern side of the continent linked up by military force. The crusades, the grand project of the age was as much a venetian mercantile adventure as a religious pilgrimage, culminating in the sack of Constantinople in 1204. What happened? Where did all these city states go? And why? That is what we are going to discuss today, when we look at the showdown between Maximilian of Habsburg, widower of the last duchess of Burgundy and father of Philip, the universally recognised heir of the Low Countries and the Flemish cities, and specifically its largest, the city of Ghent. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts....

Love him or hate him, it's hard to take one step into the medieval world without running into the larger-than-life figure of Richard the Lionheart. Rebel, crusader, prisoner, castle-builder Richard is one of the most colourful and quotable kings of the Middle Ages. This week, Danièle speaks with Heather Blurton about how Richard's contemporaries saw him, the wild stories told about him in the later Middle Ages, and why we still just can't get enough of this controversial king. You can support this podcast at https://www.patreon.com/medievalists

Today we hear from Dr. Maria Rutmann, founder of Lionheart Direct Primary Care in northern Maine. She discusses the transformative power of the Direct Primary Care (DPC) clinic model as physician burnout and healthcare system challenges escalate nationwide. Dr. Rutmann shares her journey from working in a traditional fee-for-service hospital group - where mounting administrative demands and loss of autonomy led to emotional exhaustion - to reclaiming her purpose and joy in medicine through DPC.Listeners learn how Lionheart DPC empowers physicians to practice value-based care by fostering lasting patient-physician relationships, personalizing health experiences, and eliminating the barriers of insurance-driven healthcare. Dr. Rutmann emphasizes that DPC not only improves healthcare access in rural areas, but also allows doctors the time and freedom to provide comprehensive, preventative, and patient-centered care. Families in her community have experienced the convenience and rapid responsiveness of the DPC model, sometimes avoiding costly and time-consuming ER visits and walk-ins thanks to direct communication and same-day appointments. This episode also highlights how DPC serves as a solution to physician burnout, supporting practitioners to reconnect with their sense of purpose, maximize patient outcomes, and enjoy professional autonomy. Listeners considering DPC - from those facing moral injury in fee-for-service settings, to those interested in community-driven, flexible healthcare - will find practical advice, heartfelt encouragement, and proof that a better way in healthcare is not only possible, but thriving. Keywords: physician burnout, healthcare access, direct primary care, DPC, value-based care, physician autonomy, patient-centered care, rural healthcare, medical practice models, Lionheart Direct Primary Care.Learn about healthcare for your own family and about health shares today! With decades of experience at companies such as Snap-on, NAPA, Goodyear, and Pirelli, Phillip blends a lifetime in the automotive industry with a genuine passion for cars and tires. Today, he leads Turbo Wholesale Tires with a focus on helping independent dealers succeed through innovative tire industry growth strategies and strong distributor partnerships. In this episode…Growing a tire brand from Tier 4 to Tier 2 has historically taken 20–25 years. But what if that journey could be accelerated? At Turbo Wholesale Tires, he emphasizes building semi-exclusive distributor partnerships that create value on both sides while keeping brand share, not distribution share, at the center of the company's growth.Beyond business, Phillip also shares his leadership philosophy. He talks about why “life is a choice,” why kindness should be part of every decision, and how personal values guide long-term success in the tire industry. It's refreshing to see how character and strategy intersect in the journey to scale a tire brand. On this episode of Gain Traction, Mike Edge welcomes Phillip Kane for a conversation about the fastest path from Tier 4 to Tier 2. Dan and leading medieval historians explain everything you need to know about Magna Carta...and the story is more dramatic than you might think. Magna Carta sprang from an England on the brink of civil war; the feeble king John left grappling for control after a disastrous defeat in France in the early 13th century and a baron's rebellion in England. It was forged at a standoff on the banks of the Thames in 1215 and still provides the basis of law for most of the English-speaking world today. With thanks to Dr Michael Livingston, Dan Jones and Dr Jess Nelson. This episode was produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal Patmore with additional production from Mark Edger.Click here to listen to Dan's explainer on William the MarshalClick here to listen to Dan's explainer on Richard the LionheartYou can sign up to watch Dan and Dr Michael Livingston's documentary series on Magna Carta on https://www.historyhit.com/subscribe.We'd love to hear your feedback - you can take part in our podcast survey here: https://insights.historyhit.com/history-hit-podcast-always-on.You can also email the podcast directly at ds.hh@historyhit.com.
¿O, no?
Eleanor of Aquitaine is best known as the wife of England's Henry II, the mother of his numerous children—including two kings, Richard the Lionheart and his infamous brother John, of Magna Carta fame—and perhaps for her long incarceration at Henry's insistence after their burning romance turned to ashes. What is often forgotten is that Eleanor, before she ever met Henry, ruled as queen of France for fifteen years. About a decade into her marriage, Eleanor accompanied her husband, King Louis VII, on the Second Crusade to re-establish Christian control over Jerusalem. In The Queen's Companion (Cuidono Press, 2025), this is where her story intersects with that of Lucy Pick's narrator, Lady Aude, who has her own reasons for traveling from Europe to the Holy Land. Interspersed with the events of the Second Crusade, told from the point of view of the crusaders and witnessed by Aude as Eleanor's lady-in-waiting, is Aude's own history, which she presents in the form of stories to Eleanor and her women. Aude is ruthlessly honest in revealing her own flaws and errors as well as her triumphs, and through her voice Lucy Pick creates a character—at times unlikable, but always indomitable and even admirable, much like Eleanor herself—who shines a spotlight onto medieval life in all its complexity. Lucy Pick, a historian of the thought and culture of medieval Spain, taught for over twenty years at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. The Queen's Companion is her second novel. C. P. Lesley is the author of two historical fiction series set during the childhood of Ivan the Terrible and four other novels. Her latest book, Song of the Steadfast, appeared in 2025. Break 1: Kia MOG STORY 1: Stone Mountain Park's Pumpkin Festival returns with all-new glow-in-the-dark attractions Stone Mountain Park is about to feel like a storybook come to life. Starting Sept. 13, the Pumpkin Festival: Play by Day, Glow by Night is back—and it’s bigger, brighter, and, honestly, a little more magical this year. At night, the park transforms. Picture this: Cinderella floating through the air in a sparkling gown, lighting up a massive pumpkin tree. Then there’s the glow-in-the-dark pumpkin parade—floats, fairy tale characters, and a dance party you can’t help but join. Oh, and the grand finale? The World’s Largest Pumpkin Drone & Light Show, complete with fireworks. By day, it’s all about family fun—rides, glowing pumpkins, and even mini-golf. This runs through Nov. 2. STORY 2: Gwinnett Democrats blast federal, state leaders over raid at Hyundai-LG plant Gwinnett County leaders didn’t hold back Friday, slamming federal and state officials over a massive immigration raid at the Hyundai-LG plant in Bryan County. Nearly 475 workers—many South Korean nationals—were arrested, sparking outrage in Georgia’s largest Korean-American community. Federal agents called it a criminal investigation, not an immigration raid, but the fallout is undeniable. STORY 3: Buford Dam Road temporarily closing near Lake Lanier on Sept. 11 Heads up, drivers—Buford Dam Road near Lake Lanier’s southern end is shutting down for a day. On Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close the road to patch potholes, fix guardrails, and handle some tree work. If you’re in the area, plan to detour via State Route 20. Oh, and heads up—parks along the road, like Buford Dam Park and West Bank Park, will also be closed. It’s just one day, but still, maybe pack a little extra patience. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: GWINNET FAIR STORY 4: Many Georgia teachers say they are overworked, underpaid and exposed to violence Georgia’s teachers are burned out. Overworked, underpaid, and dealing with everything from disruptive classrooms to outright violence, many are questioning how much longer they can stay. A new survey from the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) paints a grim picture: two-thirds of educators feel exhausted, and a quarter report severe teacher shortages at their schools. Even worse? 8% say they’ve been physically assaulted by students—double that for special education staff. Low pay, second jobs, and unpaid college debt only add to the stress. Something’s gotta give. STORY 5: Buford Corn Maze opens Saturday Fall’s not officially here yet, but the Buford Corn Maze is already gearing up for its 17th season of autumn fun—and honestly, who’s complaining? The Maze started Saturday, the 32-acre farm on Bennett Road is bringing back all the classics: the corn maze (of course), pumpkin patch, hayrides, pony rides, and the Kid’s Corner. Oh, and don’t forget the Haunted Forest—it opens Sept. 26 with this year’s theme, “Into the Twisted Hollow.” Spooky, right? New this year? Expanded animal encounters, carnival games, and a bigger kids’ play area. Tickets? Online or at the gate. STORY 6: ART BEAT: Lionheart Theatre returns all-female cast production of 'Radio T.B.S. Trailer Park Broadcasting Scandals' “Radio T.B.S.” is a fan favorite, so of course it’s part of Lionheart’s 25th Anniversary Season. Running Sept. 12–28, this all-female comedy stars longtime anchors Debbie McLaughlin and Tanya Gilmer, who’ve been with the show since its first run. Set in the Luna Del Mar Manufactured Home Oasis (aka “The Penicillin Capital of Central Florida”), the play follows radio hosts Vesta Poteet and Dixie Mandrell as they dish on everything from the Miss Manatee Contest to a “Jesus and Elvis” tribute. Oh, and those “Gone with the Wind” collector plates? Scarlett O’Hara looks suspiciously like Ernest Borgnine. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., with matinees on Sundays and Sept. 27. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors, students, and military. Complimentary desserts at intermission—yes, really. Get tickets at lionhearttheatre.org or call 404-919-4022. But hurry—this one sells out fast. STORY 7: Suwanee wants tax rate to stay the same as past 13 years Suwanee residents, get ready to possibly see a familiar number on your property tax bill this fall. The City Council just voted to tentatively keep the millage rate at 4.93 mills—the same rate it’s been for 13 years. But here’s the catch: it’s slightly above the rollback rate, meaning a 3.88% tax increase is coming your way. Why? The city’s $20.8 million budget for FY 2026, which kicked off July 1, needs funding. It’s 7.8% bigger than last year’s and includes five new full-time positions, $650,000 for landscaping, and $606,000 for capital projects. Public hearings? Sept. 11 and Sept. 23. We’ll have closing comments after this. Break 4: Ingles Markets Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast.
