What was it like to grow up American in 1968 Bangkok, living in the shadow of the Vietnam War? In this episode, I sit down with author Daria Sommers to discuss her debut historical fiction novel, Sawadika American Girl — a coming-of-age story set against one of history's most turbulent eras. Daria shares the little known story of the vast American expat community in Thailand during the Vietnam War, the experience of being a "third culture kid," and how storytelling and art can heal even the deepest historical wounds. Taboo to Truth: Unapologetic Conversations About Sexuality in Midlife
In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on something that is already inside your world whether you're ready for it or not — artificial intelligence and sex. I'm breaking down four categories of AI-powered intimacy technology: smart sex toys and biofeedback devices, AI companion apps and chatbots, virtual reality experiences, and AI in sexual health and therapy. I talk about what these tools actually do, why they matter specifically for people navigating desire and relationships after 50, and the questions we're not asking loudly enough — about data privacy, about who this technology was built for, and about what happens to our capacity for real human connection when frictionless digital intimacy becomes the easier option. This is not a scare episode. This is a get-informed episode. Because you deserve to be an empowered participant in the world you're already living in.In this episode:00:00 — Introduction: AI Is Already in Your Bedroom01:15 — The Four Categories of AI Intimacy Tech02:30 — Smart Sex Toys and Biofeedback Devices04:10 — Lioness, FirmTech, WeVibe and What They Actually Do05:30 — Haptics and Teledildonics: Physical Intimacy Across Distance06:45 — AI Companion Apps: Loneliness, Grief, and the Limits of Digital Connection08:30 — Virtual Reality and Intimacy: VR Therapy, Body Shame, and Immersive Content10:15 — The Three Questions We're Not Asking About AI and Sex12:00 — Is Technology a Bridge or a Destination?13:15 — Closing: How to Be an Empowered Participant Want a deeper look? After a long break, Chris and Brittany return to catch everyone up on the wild last two years working in the film industry. From working on Taylor Sheridan shows like Lioness and Landman, to coordinating practical explosions, filming massive action sequences, and surviving 100-hour work weeks, this episode is a deep dive into the reality of modern filmmaking. Brittany shares stories from working with Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson on Unholy Trinity, creating large-scale practical effects for Netflix films, and transitioning fully into the world of special effects. Chris talks about bouncing between indie films and larger productions across Oklahoma and beyond, stepping behind the camera unexpectedly, and rediscovering the passion to direct his own projects again. This is a raw, funny, and honest conversation about: Working on major productions Practical effects vs CGI * Indie filmmaking survival * Hollywood actors on set * Building a career in film * Burnout, creativity, and staying motivated If you love filmmaking, behind-the-scenes stories, practical effects, or indie cinema, this episode is packed with insight and real industry experiences. - Check out our film INBETWEENING (I wrote/directed, they produced), available on streaming right now! #Filmmaking #BehindTheScenes #TaylorSheridan #Lioness #Landman #IndieFilm #MoviePodcast #PracticalEffects #Hollywood #SamuelLJackson #PierceBrosnan #NetflixMovies
A few years back, novels classed as “romantasy”—a portmanteau of “romance” and “fantasy”—might have seemed destined to attract only niche appeal. But since the pandemic, the genre has proved nothing short of a phenomenon. Sarah J. Maas's “A Court of Thorns and Roses” series has repeatedly topped best-seller lists, and Rebecca Yarros's 2025 title “Onyx Storm” became the fastest-selling adult novel in decades. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz are joined by their fellow New Yorker staff writer Katy Waldman as they delve into the realm of romantasy themselves. Together, they consider some of the most popular entries in the genre, and discuss how monitoring readers' reactions on BookTok, a literary corner of TikTok, allows writers to tailor their work to fans' hyperspecific preferences. Often, these books are conceived and marketed with particular tropes in mind—but the key ingredient in nearly all of them is a sense of wish fulfillment. “The reason that I think they're so powerful and they provide such solace to us is because they tell us, ‘You're perfect. You're always right. You have the hottest mate. You have the sickest powers,' ” Waldman says. “I totally get it. I fall into those reveries, too. I think we all do.”This episode originally aired on February 13, 2025.Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Did a Best-Selling Romantasy Novelist Steal Another Writer's Story?,” by Katy Waldman (The New Yorker)“The Song of the Lioness,” by Tamora Pierce“A Court of Thorns and Roses,” by Sarah J. In this episode of Ask and Answered by Soul, Jennifer Urezzio sits down with Tiffany Cano, CEO of Highly Perceptive People Academy, to explore the powerful concept of blind spots—the subconscious patterns that quietly block our success in areas like money, relationships, health, and visibility. Tiffany shares how even highly intuitive, conscious individuals can struggle to see their own blocks, often due to unhealed wounds, inner critics, or protective mechanisms like emotional numbness. These blind spots can keep us stuck in fear, resistance, or self-doubt—especially when it comes to being seen and stepping into our next level. The conversation highlights the importance of developing discernment between the voice of the ego and the voice of the soul, and why courage and self-awareness are essential on this path. Listeners are given simple but powerful tools to begin identifying and shifting their blind spots, including asking questions like “What would love say?” and “If I knew I was enough, what would I do?” This episode is a reminder that your soul already holds the answers—you just have to be willing to listen, trust, and take aligned action. You can learn more about Tiffany at https://highlyperceptivepeopleacademy.com/ About Tiffany Tiffany Cano is the CEO of Highly Perceptive People Academy. In this week's episode, we're joined by critical mastermind Caroline Cai (aka Clairolime) to unpack what we're calling Catalan Chicslop, the downtempo, sophisticated, quietly freaky aesthetic championed by brands like Paloma Wool and Gimaguas. We discuss how this look evolved from avant-basic dopamine dressing, its influences from ‘90s minimalism to early 20th century experimental couture, Barcelona's history as a modernist aura farm, post-Phoebe Philo feminist-lite brand mythos, and strategies to transcend the tyranny of chicness. We also analyze the aesthetic's appeal to women across successive life stages, from 13-year-old Penelope Dissick to microinfluencer gallerinas to mysterious pregnant brunettes. Welcome to Heart of the Matter Radio/Podcast. This week we remember a Lioness, Paula Bonhoeffer. She loved her children well and educated them at home rather than entrust them to the Prussian government schools. She gave Dietrich the grit to stand up to a dictator. This week, I sat down with a modern-day Paula, Mavian Arocha-Rowe, who also homeschools. We are bridging the gap between Paula's 1917 kitchen and our living rooms today. How do we raise kids who aren't afraid to stand alone? Listen in for a conversation on faith, homeshool, and grit.

Get ready for an electrifying conversation with LaMonica Garrett, whose unconventional road to stardom took him from the trampoline-fueled chaos of SlamBall to a breakout role on One Tree Hill. In this episode, LaMonica unpacks the "athletic mentality" that fuels his craft, tracing his evolution from a self-described "green" actor relying on raw charisma to discovering the quiet power of stillness under the guidance of veteran coaches and legends like Billy Bob Thornton. He recounts the "worst audition in history" and shares behind-the-scenes stories from the grueling, documentary-style shoots of Taylor Sheridan's 1883, where he learned how to "fly the plane while it's in the air." Whether you know him as the Monitor in the DC Universe or the steely Tucker in Lioness, LaMonica delivers hard-earned insights on surviving failure, the wisdom he picked up from Morgan Freeman, and why he keeps his foot on the gas by returning to acting class year-round. Step into a conversation that reimagines everything you thought you knew about astrology. In this episode of The Mystical Underground, Rob and Trish MacGregor talk with British author and “real‑life Indiana Jones” Graham Phillips about his new book, *The Original Zodiac: What Ancient Astrology Reveals About You*—a reconstruction of an 18‑sign zodiac that predates the familiar 12‑sign system by thousands of years. Phillips explains how clues from ancient Mesopotamia and the carved animals of Göbekli Tepe led him to this lost zodiac, why its animal signs—like the Spider, Swan, Vulture, Mouflon, and Lioness—may describe personality traits with surprising accuracy, and how he used a blend of historical research and modern AI to test the patterns he found. The discussion ranges from personal readings for the hosts based on their “original” signs to Phillips's wider adventures tracking down relics behind the legends of the Holy Grail, King Arthur, Merlin's possible voyage to North America, and the hidden purpose of Stonehenge as a prehistoric observatory and healing center. If you're fascinated by ancient mysteries, synchronicity, or new ways to look at your own birth chart, this episode offers a rich mix of speculative history, investigative storytelling, and cosmic what‑ifs. https://www.grahamphillips.net/

In this episode of Sync Music Matters I'm joined by editor and producer Chad Galster who is best known for his long-standing collaboration with filmmaker Taylor Sheridan. Chad has worked on every season of Yellowstone along with its prequels 1883 and 1923, and the 2023 series Lioness, starring Zoë Saldaña. Chad shares his unconventional journey into the entertainment industry including the bold decision to turn his back on a career in medicine and start over in film and television. We talk about his early days editing reality TV and the audition that led him to Yellowstone, and how that opportunity became career-defining. A central theme of the conversation is creative freedom and the trust required between director, editor, and composer to facilitate the taking of creative risks. Chad offers insight into how that trust enables experimentation, irreverence and originality in storytelling, especially in an industry often hesitant to break from established formulas. We also dive into his collaborations with composers Brian Tyler (Yellowstone) and Andrew Lockington (Landman and Lioness), and explore how the edit and the music shapes tone, pacing and emotional impact. The episode wraps with a look at the Yellowstone soundtrack and its role in elevating artists like Ryan Bingham, helping define the show's unmistakable sonic identity. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of editing, music and fearless creative decision-making in modern television. Chad Galster on Instagram

Zoe Saldaña first stepped into the role of Avatar's Neytiri when she was 24 years-old. Now, the 47 year-old is back for the third film of the James Cameron franchise Avatar: Fire and Ash. "This installment of Avatar [is about] how a family can be resilient and learn to smile and love again after experiencing great loss," Saldaña told Vogue's Deputy Editor Taylor Antrim and Global Director of Social Sam Sussman ahead of the film's release in US theatres on December 19. "I get really lost into the world of Pandora," says Saldaña about reprising her role. “I really care for the characters that I play. I create a solid backstory for them, so I live more in that reality.” It's been a big year for Saldaña. On top of Avatar, she is currently Vogue Mexico's December cover star, she won an Oscar for her role in Emilia Pérez, is currently in production for season 3 of Lioness and also met Pope Leo while in Italy with her three sons. "They were so hyper," reflects Saldaña. "They're like typical 10 and eight year olds and can't focus... And the moment comes and we're right in front of him – you can see that picture, they're gleaming."Zoe Saldaña has the distinction for being the first actor to star in four films that grossed over $2 billion at the box office. She's taken part in some of the largest franchises such as the Avengers, Avatar, Star Trek and the Pirates of the Caribbean. But now more than ever, Saldaña told Vogue that immersing herself in her personal life is the biggest priority."For a long time, I was afraid to stop," she confessed to Ramón Barreto in her cover story . "I feared that if I did, something wouldn't be right. But now, I understand that pausing is also part of the movement."The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. This episode pulls together the long wars and the quiet missions that followed. It starts in Anbar and along the Syrian border, with Lioness teams at checkpoints, battalions fighting through al Qaim and Ramadi, and tribes turning against Al Qaeda. From there it tracks how Iraq shifted from brutal street fighting to fragile calm, only to see ISIS rise out of the same ground a few years later. The story widens to Afghanistan's hidden record in the Afghanistan Papers, then follows Marines into humanitarian work in Liberia, Haiti, the Indian Ocean, the Philippines, and Nepal, where ships become lifelines instead of launchpads. Libya, Benghazi, and the ISIS war show how quickly combat can return. The chapter closes on the future of the Corps, from Force Design debates to the simple ideas that have outlasted every reorganization. Jim and Matt kick off the show with British bantamweight Davey Grant, who joins live from the UFC Performance Institute as a brand-new Las Vegas resident. Fresh off rehabbing a torn bicep and injured nose, Davey talks about settling into life stateside, training his kids at Syndicate MMA, and why moving to America has changed the way he studies the sport — including watching fights live with a pen and paper to stay sharp on evolving MMA trends. The guys then unpack all the biggest storylines from UFC Qatar, where Matt takes a well-earned victory lap after going 2–0 in his picks — correctly calling Arman Tsarukyan's arm-triangle finish and Volkan Oezdemir's stoppage win.Later, women's flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko joins the show to discuss balancing her pursuit of all-time greatness with her creative “side quests,” from acting roles to drawing on her degree in film direction. With several options in front of her, Valentina reveals she's keeping a close eye on a potential trilogy with Amanda Nunes — especially now that the Lioness has expressed interest in meeting her again, this time at 125 pounds. Finally, in the wake of Ian Machado Garry's statement decision win, which capped off two straight weeks of top-flight welterweight action, Jim and Matt close the show by debating which 170-pound contender has earned the next shot at Islam Makhachev's welterweight title.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
